As a physician, Sandeep Jauhar had a certain understanding of Alzheimer's. Then, when the disease was impacting his own father, more and more questions, confusion, and frustrations arose. In his new memoir, My Father's Brain, Jauhar describes how his immigrant family grappled with his father's new reality. He tells Here & Now's Deepa Fernandes how difficult and exhausting it can be to allocate the resources that it takes to care for an aging loved one, and how cultural context can play a huge role in their safety.

Before open heart surgeries became an everyday thing, the heart was totally and completely off-limits. Operating on a beating heart was just about the most taboo thing you could do. But in 1893, Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, a surgeon in Chicago, got a patient with a stab wound to the heart. And it was clear that without surgery, he was going to die. Dr. Williams had never heard of anyone doing heart surgery, but he decided he would be the first to try. And he was going to do it in his own hospital. The first Black-owned and operated hospital in the United States. We talked with Dr. Alisha Jefferson and Dr. Sandeep Jauhar, author of Heart: A History. Dr. Jauhar has a new book, “My Father's Brain: Life in the Shadow of Alzheimer's,” which you can pre-order on Amazon. A Sony Music Entertainment and Somethin' Else production. After considering several paths — including running Domino's franchises — he found multifamily real estate. Today, Rohun is the founding partner of JT Capital, which focuses on 120- to 400-unit apartment complexes that have below-market rents in Florida. He is a GP of 5,000 units as well as an LP in a few multifamily, self-storage, industrial, and short-term rental deals. In this episode, Rohun tells us how he got started in multifamily by underwriting 100 deals in 30 days, his thoughts on rising interest rates, and how systems have helped him to scale his business. META PERFORMANCE SHOW | The term "heartbreak" isn't just a figure of speech, it can actually be quite literal. Dr. Sandeep Jauhar takes us through his fascinating research on Broken Heart Syndrome AKA Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy--a phenomenon in which grief or other emotional upset can cause dramatic physical changes to the size and shape of one's heart and potentially lead to heart failure. Dr. Jauhar and host Jason Jaggard also discuss the journalistic element of being a doctor, self-limitation and the importance of taking risks, having to work harder as an immigrant in America and the parallels between the doctor-patient and coach-coachee relationships. Jauhar was a Rajput practice of mass self-immolation by women, or otherwise execution by their husbands, fathers or brothers, in India, to avoid capture, enslavement and rape by an invading Islamic army, when facing certain defeat during a war. Some reports of jauhar mention women committing self-immolation along with their children. This practice was historically observed in northwest regions of India, with most famous jauhars in recorded history occurring during wars between Hindu Rajput kingdoms in Rajasthan and the opposing Muslim armies. #Jauhar, #Necrophilia, #Rajasthan, #Chittor, #India, #RajputKingdoms, #Bhogdasis, #Shaka, #Afghanistan, #Egypt, #Morocco, #RaniPadmini, #RawalRatanSingh, #AlauddinKhilji, #RaniKarnavati, #BahadurShah, #Akbar. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/venus-jain3/message
