The Day of Pentecost is a highlight within the Church Year, as Christians rejoice that Jesus has kept His promise to send His Holy Spirit. All the signs that accompanied the outpouring of the Spirit in Acts 2 drew the attention of those gathered in Jerusalem for the festival. Many wondered what was happening, and some mocked the disciples. Peter stood up and spoke for the whole group to proclaim the good news in Jesus. Because of Good Friday and Easter, the last days had come, so that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ will be saved. Rev. Dr. David Schultz, pastor at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wood River, IL, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to discuss the Day of Pentecost and to study Acts 2:1-21. Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Timothy Appel, looks at the text of Holy Scripture both in its broad context and its narrow detail, all for the sake of proclaiming Christ crucified and risen for sinners. Two pastors engage with God's Word to sharpen not only their own faith and knowledge, but the faith and knowledge of all who listen.

It was the summer of 1978 in America. The minimum wage was 2.65 an hour, the Bee Gees ruled the pop music airwaves, and Star Wars enjoyed a rerelease in select theaters nationwide. On the east side of the Mississippi River, just thirty minutes from St. Louis was the small residential town of Wood River, Illinois, where summer activities like fishing, swimming, and backyard barbecues were in full swing. Most of the residents of Wood River had lived in the town their whole lives and considered it the best of both worlds.Karla Lou Brown, aged 22, felt the same way. When she and Mark, her boyfriend of five years, decided to move in together, there was no place that they'd rather live. They bought a home right in the center of Wood River.Karla adored her boyfriend Mark, who was a few years older, but so far, he had been reluctant to make a long-term commitment regarding their relationship. When Mark finally suggested they buy a house together, she immediately said yes. Karla was the happiest she had ever been in her life. That happiness lasted for one day.Join Cam and Jen as they discuss "Picture Perfect: Karla Lou Brown"Promo by our friend Javier from Pretend Podcast. This podcast is a replay of the live show Travis Justice and Dr. Rob Zatechka did the night Scott Frost was fired as Nebraska's Head Coach. Mickey Joseph will serve as Interim Head Coach for the remainder of the 2022 season. Nebraska lost to Georgia Southern last night 45-42 in Frost's last game as Head Coach. The Huskers are 1-2 on the season. Frost ends his Nebraska coaching career with a 16-31 record, 0-13 against ranked teams, and 5-19 in games decided by 7 points or less. Frost failed to produce a winning season at Nebraska and never qualified for a bowl game. Frost, a National Championship-winning quarterback for the Huskers, came to Nebraska following an undefeated season at Central Florida. He was considered a "Home Run" hire who could unite the fan base. The Wood River native is scheduled to receive a $15-million buyout of his contract. Betfred Sports presents the Doc Talk Podcast. Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail…well Illinois is just one of many of the states the traveled through…The Trail is approximately 4,900 miles long, extending from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to the mouth of the Columbia River, near present day Astoria, Oregon. It follows the historic outbound and inbound routes of the Lewis and Clark Expedition as well as the preparatory section from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Wood River, Illinois. I know I was on it in South Dakota. Just knowing that back in the day they traveled this journey…it's amazing. Did you go to this park Jay….???Lincoln Home National Historic Site…our 16th PresidentThis site offers guided tours of the Lincoln Home, giving visitors a look into the Lincoln family during the seventeen years they lived in the house on the corner of Eighth and Jackson Streets. Visitors will get a glimpse into Lincoln's life as a family man, as well as explore his rise as a successful lawyer and politician through the context of the Lincoln Home….Mormon Pioneer National Historic Trail… Explore the Mormon Pioneer National Historic Trail across five states to see the 1,300-mile route traveled by Mormons who fled Nauvoo, Illinois, to the Great Salt Lake Valley in 1846-1847. Some brief history… Mormons settled along a bend of the Mississippi River in Illinois. There they established a community they called Nauvoo, a Hebrew word meaning “beautiful place.” It was at Nauvoo that Smith cautiously began introducing the Old Testament practice of “plural marriage,” or polygamy, among select church leaders.Thousands of converts flocked to Nauvoo, soon making it the largest town in Illinois. Neighbors initially welcomed the orderly, industrious settlers despite their religious differences. But relations gradually soured, with complaints centering on Mormons' Pullman National Monument Pullman National Monument was designated by President Barack Obama on February 19, 2015, making it the first National Park Service unit in Chicago. The park tells the story of one of the first planned industrial communities in the United States, the sleeping car magnate who helped create it, and the workers who lived there. The district is significant for its influence on urban planning and design, as well as its role in American labor history, including the 1894 Pullman Strike and Boycott. Located in what is now the Pullman neighborhood of Chicago, the historic district includes the site of the former Pullman Palace Car Works shops and administration building, the Hotel Florence (named after George Pullman's eldest child), Arcade Park. and the Greenstone Church (currently the Greenstone United Methodist Church). Also within the district is the A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum, named for the prominent leader A. Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded April 9th, 2022. The Trudeau administration has again demonstrated the elasticity of its commitment to the "international rules-based order" extends too to domestic jurisprudence. This time, the federal Liberals are turning a blind eye to the blatant recruitment of Canadians to fight in Ukraine. This flies in the face of the Foreign Enlistment Act, which clearly specifies those engaging in such activities are breaking the law, but as of this writing no arrests have been made or charges filed. Ken Stone is a long-time antiwar activist whose served as an executive member of both the Syria Solidarity Movement and Hamilton Coalition to Stop the War. Ken and the Coalition have released the statement on the government's latest failure to uphold the law, ‘Illegal Recruitment of Canadians for War in Ukraine'. Ken Stone in the first half. And; as British Columbia's helicopter-assisted wolf culling season picks up, questions again are being raised about both the efficacy of the program and veracity of its claim to be necessary for saving the endangered Northern Caribou. Eddie Petrashyn is an East Kootenay conservationist with Wildsight, an organization working to quote, "protect biodiversity and encourage sustainable communities in Canada's Columbia and Rocky Mountain regions". Eddie's investigation into BC government-approved forestry practices in the Wood River basin, north of Revelstoke challenge the logic behind the BC NDP's conservation practices. Eddie Petrashyn and saving northern caribou habitat in the second half. But first, Ken Stone and Canada's would-be foreign legionnaires. It's Pi Day, and whether you're celebrating math or dessert, it's going to be a hap-pie day either way! For goodness bakes, we kicked off the show with our Associate Caller of the Day, Angela from Store 3842 in Macedon, New York, who gave a shoutout to the pharmacy team. Today's 'Spy the Lie' filled us with confusion, but it didn't stump customer Brad, who called in from St. Charles, Missouri. George from Store 5641 called and gave a shoutout to all the associates working with him in La Habra, California. In Milestone Minute, we celebrated Janet from Store 846 in La Grange, Texas, for 35 years, Gregory from Store 3223 in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, for 30 years, and topping off the celebrations was Timothy from Wood River, Illinois, on 25 years with the company. Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil. (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14) 74 You know, that's the way to get God close to you, is think about Him, talk about Him. Just keep Jesus… Don't talk about the things of the world; talk about Jesus. That's the way to do it. People may think you're a little funny, but that's all right. Just keep on, let your conversation be about Him. Here… I want to stop here a minute. My son, Billy… He's around here somewhere. Here about three or four years ago, we were in a meeting. And he… They was playing some kind of music or something. We went in after service at Wood River, Illinois. And we went in to get some—some food. And they was playing some kind of a song. I don't know what it was. And he said, “Daddy, ain't that a pretty song?” I said, “What song?” And I despise them little old jukeboxes, ever what you call it. I've went into a many restaurant and said, “Lady, I'll lay two dollars down here; I got my family, if you'll pull the plug out of that filthy thing there, 'till I can let my family eat. You just pull the plug out.” 75 Them old rock and rolls, and boogly-woogly, and every that kind of stuff, it's a disgrace. It makes me so nervous, you can't eat. I—I—I don't mind it myself, 'cause I got a little gear I can pull myself in and just keep thinking about God, and I don't hear it at all. So after awhile (He was single then, before he was married.), some little lady would tip by, and he said, “Daddy, hasn't she got pretty hair?” I said, “Who?” He said, “Daddy, all you think about is the Bible and God.” I said, “Thank you, honey. That's a very nice compliment. That's all I want to think about.” That's right. Think… If I can just keep my mind settled on Him all the time, that's all that's necessary. 60-0713 - "Blind Bartimaeus" Rev. This week my guest is the President of StorCo Storage, James Reid. StorCo not only provides storage solutions to the communities it's three facilities are in but is also a part of the community itself. About today's guest: James Reid At age 8, James started to work for his father's company, Reid's Tree Service. Among many things, his father taught him how to work hard and to provide customer satisfaction, one client at a time. He dreamed of owning a company like his dad, and at age 13, he started a lawn service. While going through high school, he hired a crew to focus on school and grow his business at the same time. College offered him the opportunity to learn more about the industry and business. While attending college, he opened a Garden Center to provide his clients the best quality plants and materials. In 2008, James saw another opportunity to provide safe, clean affordable housing to residents in the vicinity of Moscow Mills, Missouri. By purchasing 10 mobile home units in a nice mobile home park, Rental Solutions was born. Rental Solutions provides homes to 10 families on an ongoing basis. With continuous maintenance and repair, he protects his investment which has continued to provide nice homes for families for more than 10 years. Always focused on opportunities, James began studying the self-storage market in 2010. After searching for the perfect property for more than 3 years, he successfully purchased, financed, designed, and transformed a former car dealership into the latest addition to his holdings, StorCo Self Storage. StorCo offers more than 500 secure, indoor, climate-controlled units for the residents in the Wood River, Illinois area. StorCo has convenient entry and exit points and offers outdoor parking for RVs, campers, boats and more. Julian Tyo has lived in the Wood River valley for over a decade where he started the Ketchum bike park and managed the development of gravity trails on Bald Mountain and at Sun Valley Resort. Today he's on the board of the Wood River Trails Coalition and also serves as the Community Recreation Supervisor & Events Manager for the city of Ketchum. In this episode, we ask Julian: How did you end up in Sun Valley? What makes Sun Valley stand out among mountain bike destinations? Who builds and maintains the trails in your area? What are some of the challenges the Wood River Valley faces as a popular recreation destination? For someone visiting for the first time, what are 2 or 3 must ride trails or trail systems? What are the family-friendly rides, and which ones are the most challenging? What are some lesser-known trails where riders can get away from the crowds? Who are the tour operators or clubs visitors can connect with if they want to ride with locals? Where do people hang out after the ride? Are there any bars or breweries that tend to attract mountain bikers? Is there camping available in the area? Are there bike-friendly hotels in town? What is the best time of year to visit? Are there any festivals or races visitors can plan to attend? Are there plans to expand or improve trails in the area? Is there anything else mountain bikers need to know before visiting Sun Valley? Spring Football - Week 1 Wood River at Nokomis ...
Glenda-Lee Allan Vossler talks with David Marit, Saskatchewan's Agriculture Minister prior to the provincial election call, after he won another term as MLA for Wood River on Monday night.
It's Friday: that means it's panel time!"Former Vice President Joe Biden got a jolt of momentum on Tuesday after securing an endorsement from former President [Barack] Obama, who plans to go to work right away as a fundraiser and top surrogate for the campaign," The Hill reported Tuesday. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) has also endorsed Biden, as has Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA). The Democrats are falling in line at the leadership level. What does this mean for Biden going forward?Earlier this month in Wood River, Illinois, two black men recorded video footage of them being followed by a police officer at a local Walmart and said they were told to leave the store because they were wearing medical masks. Wood River Police Chief Brad Wells said in a statement that the officer approached the men before they entered the Walmart because he "believed the two individuals to be acting suspiciously." In another incident, Dr. Armen Henderson, an African-American doctor who works in Miami, Florida, was handcuffed and detained in front of his home by a police officer on the evening of April 10. Henderson was wearing a medical mask and loading supplies into his vehicle, as he was getting ready to work a shift for a volunteer group providing assistance and testing to homeless people amid the COVID-19 pandemic. How concerned should African Americans, be and how disgusted should all Americans be?So, US President Donald Trump told us earlier in the week that he was going to announce the guidelines for the May 1 reopening of the economy. "The White House released new guidance Thursday afternoon for states to reopen amid the coronavirus pandemic. The guidance doesn't lay out a specific timeline for relaxing social distancing restrictions. It lists a set of criteria — such as testing and hospital capacity — for local leaders to use in making decisions," the Washington Post reported Thursday. As I look at the instructions, it appears to me that once again Trump backed down, as his “guidelines” are less detailed than those from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. We've got all these stories and more!GUESTS: Caleb Maupin — Journalist and political analyst who focuses his coverage on US foreign policy.John Burris — Lead attorney and founder of the Law Office of John L. Americans are finally receiving stimulus checks from the federal government's COVID-19 pandemic relief package. "About 80 million people will receive a check by Wednesday, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said. Those who do not can check on IRS.gov later this week for the status of their payment," the Washington Post reported Tuesday. What are we to make of this now that checks are actually hitting peoples accounts? "The checks are the centerpiece of the US government's economic relief package, and many Americans have taken to social media to celebrate the arrival of the money by posting photos of the money hitting their bank account. Singles earning up to $75,000 a year receive a payment of $1,200. Married couples earning up to $150,000 a year receive a payment of $2,400. Parents receive an additional $500 for each child under 17," the Post explained. If this is the centerpiece, it's a mighty small center."President Trump on Tuesday said his administration will halt funding to the World Health Organization (WHO) pending a review of the global body for what he described as its mismanagement of the coronavirus outbreak," The Hill reported Tuesday. How big of an issue is this, and how concerned should we as Americans be that our president is trying to use the WHO as a political pawn?"Former Vice President Joe Biden got a jolt of momentum on Tuesday after securing an endorsement from former President [Barack] Obama, who plans to go to work right away as a fundraiser and top surrogate for the campaign," The Hill reported Tuesday. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) has also endorsed Biden, as has Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA). The Dems are falling in line at the leadership level. What does this mean for Biden going forward? In Georgia, there's a 1951 law that "makes it a misdemeanor to wear a 'mask, hood or device by which any portion of the face is so hidden, concealed or covered so as to conceal the identity of the wearer' either on public property or without permission on private property," according to a Monday report from The Hill. Earlier this month in Wood River, Illinois, two black men recorded video footage of them being followed by a police officer at a local Walmart and said they were told to leave the store because they were wearing medical masks. Others worry it will happen to them.GUESTS:Teresa M. Two Black men claim they were kicked out of an Illinois Walmart after they entered the store wearing surgical masks.
