I always keep a copy in my pocket, and I share it with people who are curious about our standards. It has been updated and refreshed to better cope with the challenges and temptations of our day. The new version of For the Strength of Youth is available online in 50 different languages and will also be available in print. It will be a significant help for making choices in your life. Please embrace it as your own and share it with your friends. This new version of For the Strength of Youth is subtitled A Guide for Making Choices. To be very clear, the best guide you can possibly have for making choices is Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the strength of youth. So the purpose of For the Strength of Youth is to point you to Him. It teaches you eternal truths of His restored gospel—truths about who you are, who He is, and what you can accomplish with His strength. It teaches you how to make righteous choices based on those eternal truths.13 It's also important to know what For the Strength of Youth does not do. It doesn't make decisions for you. It doesn't give you a “yes” or “no” about every choice you might ever face. For the Strength of Youth focuses on the foundation for your choices. It focuses on values, principles, and doctrine instead of every specific behavior. The Lord, through His prophets, has always been guiding us in that direction. He is pleading with us to “increase [our] spiritual capacity to receive revelation.”14 He is inviting us to “hear Him.”15 He is calling us to follow Him in higher and holier ways.16 And we are learning in a similar way every week in Come, Follow Me.       ACU Endorsed Charities -------------------------------------------------------- Pre-Born! Robert Millet: How the Constant Companionship of the Spirit Works

All In

After nearly 40 years of teaching religion, Robert Millet still had some questions regarding the Holy Ghost. For example, how does our doctrine regarding the Holy Ghost differentiate The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from other religions? Or what does the right to constant companionship of the Spirit really look like? It was this curiosity that led him to begin researching and eventually writing his latest book, “The Holy Spirit.” On today's episode, he shares the unique insights he found along the way. “Something as fundamental as God and Christ and the Holy Ghost really just cannot remain a mystery. ‘This is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent' (John 17:3). If it's life eternal to know God, heaven help us if we don't even have the means of coming to know God because God is in some ways pushed off the stage, because Jesus takes center stage.” Show Notes 2:15- "Like fish who discover water last" 9:20- The Holy Ghost or the Light of Christ 11:24- Avenues of the Spirit 16:29- My own voice or the voice of the Spirit? 23:27- Still learning, more than 40 years later 29:37- Inextricably linked to every facet of the gospel 33:36- How is His influence felt everywhere? 36:11- Baptism of fire 38:08- The differentiator  39:47- Why three separate and distinct Beings matters 45:32- Inability to feel the Spirit amidst depression 46:16- How understanding the Spirit can change our lives 48:51- What does it mean to be "all in" the gospel of Jesus Christ? For over 50 years, For the Strength of Youth has been a guide for generations of Latter-day Saint youth. For a list of 100+ episodes of ACU Sunday Series visit- https://www.podbean.com/site/search/index?kdsowie31j4k1jlf913=85cb8104bdb182c048b714ad4385f9e82a3aeb49&v=ACU+Sunday+Series+ Note- Click on “100 Episodes Found” in upper right corner.   Endorsed Charities -------------------------------------------------------- Pre-Born! Robert Millet is joined today by Craig Blomberg, Emeritus Distinguished Professor of New Testament at Denver Seminary. The pair discussed several of Jesus' parables, as found in Matthew 13; Luke 12:13-21; and Luke 16:19-31, which are covered in the New Testament Come, Follow Me curriculum on 3/20-26, as well as 4/10-16. Millet and Blomberg spoke about many of Jesus' most well-known parables, including the parable of the Sower, the Wheat and the Tares, The Laborers in the Vineyard, the Good Samaritan, the Rich Fool, the Lost Coin, the Prodigal Son, and the Lost Sheep. A key point for each of these mini-discussions, was recognizing the context in which each parable was given- where Jesus was, who he was speaking to, and what was happening in his ministry at that moment. They also discussed how these parables relate to each other, how each of their respective faith traditions would interpret the parable, and the details that are personally meaningful for each of them. Robert Millet is joined today by Mark Maddix, Dean of Theology and Christian Ministries at Point Loma University. The pair discussed the definition of a "gospel" and why we refer to Matthew, Mark, Luke and John as "Synoptic Gospels" in the New Testament, as well as the differences between the four works. They also jumped into two passages from two upcoming weeks of the 2023 New Testament Come, Follow Me curriculum in January: John 1: 1-19 (In the beginning was the WORD, corresponding with CFM 1/16-22). They pondered together whether Protestants believe Jesus was the creator of other worlds, the way John contrasts light and darkness, and why it is so crucial that Christ "lived among us." Matthew 3 (John the Baptist and the baptism of Jesus, corresponding with CFM 1/23-29). They discussed the separation of the wheat from the chaff; the baptism of fire; justification vs sanctification; and differences in the importance of baptism between Latter-day Saints and Protestants. This is a rebroadcast. The episode originally ran in November 2019. Robert Millet, Ph.D., is an author, speaker, and professor of Ancient Scripture and emeritus dean of Religious Education at Brigham Young University. Author of more than 75 published works, he has been involved in BYU Education Week for many years and is well-known as a commentator on the BYUTV Scripture Discussions program. He is also manager of Outreach and Interfaith Relations for the Church's Public Affairs department. Brother Millet chose to write his book The Holy Spirit: His Identity, Mission, and Ministry because the Spirit is so frequently referred to and discussed, but we might not appreciate all that it is. Highlights 03:00 Strategy for covering topics: he makes a list and works on it daily, narrowing it down over a period of weeks/months to develop the book. Work on prophetic statements that relate and continue narrowing the information. Also asking “what experiences have I had with this”. He wanted to cover the topics of sons of perdition, the light of Christ, and God's power. 13:00 How, as leaders, can we have a better understanding of the Holy Spirit: having it, losing it, etc. 13:47 What does it mean to “lose the Holy Ghost”? We lose feeling, we withdraw ourselves. You can't take a vacation from the Spirit – you can't sit still; you either fall back or move forward 19:45 The Holy Ghost “strives with us”. It “battles with us”. There will always be an element of the Spirit to help you; you can't “lose it”. All people can have the Spirit. They may not have the gift of the Holy Ghost that comes from baptism, but they certainly can have the Spirit and inspiration. 25:40 How do you know when a sin is forgiven? Study Mosiah 4:1-3 (joy, peace of conscience, larger measure of the Spirit). “Just don't do things that are offending to the Spirit.” 28:40 Where is “grace” in the doctrine? The Holy Ghost is an act of God's grace to us. We can put ourselves in a position to receive that gift by our actions. “The sun doesn't stop shining just because I put a bag over my head, it continues to shine”. It is the same with God; He loves us through everything. 32:30 Justification and Sanctification 44:10 Be cautious about “I feel impressed that…” It is good to teach what you feel, but if you announce that it came from the Spirit, it can come across as boastful. 45:35 How about church callings and the Spirit? If you pray to start a meeting and pray for the Spirit to guide decisions, you don't need to kneel individually about all decisions. As we strive to live our lives to keep the Spirit with us, we will see that the Holy Ghost has been guiding us in all decisions and shaped our lives. Those decisions were inspired, and hopefully good judgement. We don't need to pray over every decision. “The Spirit prepares us today for decisions we have to make in the future.” 53:00 Joseph McConkie story about calling Stake Presidents: The Lord fits us to our assignments. “God honors the servant”. Difference of being called “by God” or “of God”. 55:00 Final story related again to his friend Joseph McConkie, prior to him leaving to Scotland as a Mission President. Asked him if he had read everything and felt prepared. “What do you think?” He said, “What could cause us not to worry about 63 rules? I will teach my missionaries this: never do anything that would cost you the influence of the Holy Spirit.” That is a great standard to live by. Callings in the Church are not to be superheroes but to live in the way to be directed by the Holy Spirit. It is a solemn responsibility. Mosiah 26: Alma “feared that he would not do right”. As leaders we need to strive to do that. As we strive to live our lives to keep the Spirit with us, we will see that the Holy Ghost has been guiding us in all decisions and shaped our lives. Those decisions were inspired, and hopefully good judgement. We don’t need to pray over every decision. Robert Millet: How the Constant Companionship of the Spirit Works

It was this curiosity that led him to begin researching and eventually writing his latest book, “The Holy Spirit." On today’s episode, he shares the unique insights he found along the way.  "Something as fundamental as God and Christ and the Holy Ghost really just cannot remain a mystery. 'This is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent' (John 17:3). If it's life eternal to know God, heaven help us if we don't even have the means of coming to know God because God is in some ways pushed off the stage, because Jesus takes center stage." Show Notes: 2:15- "Like fish who discover water last" 9:20- The Holy Ghost or the Light of Christ 11:24- Avenues of the Spirit 16:29- My own voice or the voice of the Spirit? 23:27- Still learning, more than 40 years later 29:37- Inextricably linked to every facet of the gospel 33:36- How is His influence felt everywhere? 36:11- Baptism of fire 38:08- The differentiator  39:47- Why three separate and distinct Beings matters 45:32- Inability to feel the Spirit amidst depression 46:16- How understanding the Spirit can change our lives 48:51- What does it mean to be "all in" the gospel of Jesus Christ?

Fundamental to sharing the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ is a solid knowledge of the Doctrine of The Godhead; namely the true nature of God, The Son, The Holy Spirit, and their relationship to humankind. In part 1 of our Basic Doctrines series, we interview Robert Millet, who was a professor of many religion courses at the University level include at BYU. We discuss the true, revealed and enduring teachings about The Godhead. Each episode in this Basic Doctrines series will come with source material to official teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on the various doctrines, as well as resources to support it as a "doctrine" of the church. For an introduction on what is meant by a Doctrine or what is a Policy or Practice of the church, please listen to our introductory episode with Mike Goodman by clicking here. Here is the official teaching on The Godhead from the Church's official website: There are three separate personages in the Godhead: God, the Eternal Father; His Son, Jesus Christ; and the Holy Ghost (see Joseph Smith—History 1:15–20). The Father and the Son have tangible bodies of flesh and bone, and the Holy Ghost is a personage of spirit (see D&C 130:22–23). They are one in purpose and doctrine. They are perfectly united in bringing to pass Heavenly Father’s divine plan of salvation. The Godhead - God the Father God the Father is the Supreme Ruler of the universe. He is the Father of our spirits (see Hebrews 12:9). He is perfect, has all power, and knows all things. He is also a God of perfect mercy, kindness, and charity. The Godhead - Jesus Christ Jesus Christ is the Firstborn of the Father in the spirit and is the Only Begotten of the Father in the flesh. He is Jehovah of the Old Testament and the Messiah of the New Testament. Jesus Christ lived a sinless life and made a perfect Atonement for the sins of all mankind (see Alma 7:11–13). His life is the perfect example of how all mankind should live (see John 14:6; 3 Nephi 12:48). He was the first person on this earth to be resurrected (see 1 Corinthians 15:20–22). He will come again in power and glory and will reign on the earth during the Millennium. All prayers, blessings, and priesthood ordinances should be done in the name of Jesus Christ (see 3 Nephi 18:15, 20–21). Related references: Helaman 5:12; D&C 19:23; D&C 76:22–24 The Godhead - The Holy Ghost The Holy Ghost is the third member of the Godhead. He is a personage of spirit without a body of flesh and bones. He is often referred to as the Spirit, the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of God, the Spirit of the Lord, and the Comforter. The Holy Ghost bears witness of the Father and the Son, reveals the truth of all things, and sanctifies those who repent and are baptized (see Moroni 10:4–5). Related references: Galatians 5:22–23; D&C 8:2–3 Additional References or Sources on The Godhead include: The Father and the Son - A Doctrinal Exposition by the First PresidencyThe Living Christ - THE TESTIMONY OF THE APOSTLES Future episodes will continue to feature one of the 9 basic doctrines as outlined on the Church's official website. Robert L. Millet was the Abraham O. Smoot Professor of Ancient Scripture at Brigham Young University and has spent years engaging in interfaith dialogue with scholars of many religious traditions. He has often been asked the core question: “Are Mormon’s Christian?” His answer is echoed in a recent Gospel Topics essay on LDS.org resolutely declaring, “Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints unequivocally affirm themselves to be Christians.” The early members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints may have been considered peculiar, but they were rarely accused of not being Christian. The current argument against Mormonism's Christianity is based on three observations: 1) Latter-day Saints do not accept the creeds, confessions, and formulations of post-New Testament Christianity. 2) The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints does not descend through the historical line of traditional Christianity. That is, the LDS Church did not break off of the Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, or Protestant traditions. 3) Latter-day Saints do not believe in a closed canon. In this LDS Perspectives Podcast, host Nick Galieti asks Robert Millet to clarify distinctions of doctrine, to suggest how members of the LDS Church can use the “Are Mormon’s Christian?” Gospel Topics essay, and to comment on why members of the LDS Church should embrace what is both unique about LDS theology and what they share with other Christian faiths.
