Companion - a horror film "from the producers of The Notebook and Barbarian" (one of the greatest taglines I've ever heard) - has released in theaters worldwide. This was a movie I had very little interest in until seeing that very mysterious first trailer and seeing the reviews that have been coming out from critics over the past 2 months, which have been GLOWING. I had the chance to see the film just recently but the question is: will this movie start a glorious revival of the all too dead horror-comedy? Is it as amazing and as shocking as Barbarian? Find out in this review! Companion: Written and Directed by: Drew Hancock Produced by: Zach Cregger, Roy Lee, J.D. Is it a horror movie or an action movie? It doesn't matter, Nic Cage turns in one of the best performances of his career. Synopsis Renfield tells the story of Count Dracula's titular servant struggling to become self actualized in modern times after discovering his codependency in a 12-step self help group. Dracula, who has been convalescing for an indeterminate amount of time is finally gaining enough power to continue his plans for world domination, and Renfield's self empowerment is really throwing a wrench into his plans. To make matters worse, a local wolf themed gang is trying to kill Renfield, and he must combat them using his bug diet fueled superpowers. Review of Renfield The headline on this one, is that Dracula is the role that Nic Cage was born to play, and he appropriately chews up the scenery whenever he is on screen. This movie is a lot of fun thematically and visually. Renfield and Dracula's relationship interpreted through modern codependency and narcissism pop-psychology is just a great funny premise. Nicholas Hoult plays Renfield by channeling by channeling his former About a Boy costar Hugh Grant and is a great straight man to Dracula's antics. The filmmakers don't go with a straight ahead comedy, but surprisingly fold in the superhero action genre as well. It ends up being a hard-R action comedy ala Deadpool. I can't say it completely works for me, since the action and superpowered violence feels like an arbitrary add-on, but that's not to say it's not good. Some of the funnest parts are the absurdly violent fight sequences that produce more gore than most horror movies. Looking at the writers and directors, the motley film starts to make more sense. The story is by Robert Kirkman, who's famous for his comic and TV successes with The Walking Dead and Invincible. It's written by Ryan Ridley, a writer for Rick and Morty, and directed by Chris McKay, who directed the Lego Batman Movie. All of whom are great at mixing genres to great effect. Score 9/10

It sucks to be Renfield... Directed and produced by Chris McKay, Renfield is the comedy horror film written by Ryan Ridley from a story by Robert Kirkman, and inspired by characters from the 1897 novel Dracula by Bram Stoker. Renfield (Nicholas Hoult), the tortured yet loyal servant to history's most narcissistic boss, Dracula (Nicolas Cage), is forced to procure his master's prey and do his every bidding, no matter how debased. But now, after centuries of servitude, Renfield is ready to see if there's a life outside the shadow of The Prince of Darkness. If only he can figure out how to end his co-dependency.

Back in 2014, Universal Pictures wanted to reboot its Universal Monster properties as part of a shared universe they would call “The Dark Universe”. The venture began with 2014s Dracula Untold, which flopped, and then they tried again with 2017s The Mummy, which despite being profitable, earning $410 million dollars against a $125 million dollar budget, wasn't well received by critics and prompted the studio to scrap the Dark Universe.Flash forward to 2019, Robert Kirkman pitched a 20 page script for a comedic horror Dracula story in the theme of 2014s What We Do In The Shadows. 2020s The Invisible Man was a commercial and critical hit that gave new hope for the Universal Monsters franchise. Kirkman got the green light, signing up director Chris McKay and writer Ryan Ridley to develop a final vision that led to a quasi sequel to the first Universal Monster hit, Todd Browning's 1931 Dracula starring Bela Lugosi. If you want to know if Universal's latest Monster offering is going to sink or float the franchise, hangout with us as we discuss and review the latest homage to the Dracula franchise in Chris McKay's RENFIELD on The Brothers in Armchairs Podcast. Thanks for listening, and feel free to hit us up on any of our social media platforms! In which the Mister and Monsters join me in reviewing RENFIELD (2023) which is still playing at theaters or available on Prime Video for buy/rent. From director Chris McKay, from a script by Ryan Ridley with a screen story from Robert Kirkman and additional materials from Ava Tramer. The film follows Renfield (Nicholas Hoult) who's had enough of being his boss' familiar after decades of abuse and mayhem because of the Count (a deliciously wicked Nic Cage). Throw in a cop (Awkwafina) who's looking to avenge the murder of her father at the hands of the town thugs (Ben Schwartz and Shohreh Aghdashloo) and you have a symphony of gloriously over the top violence and chaotic fun. A solid script, great performances, great comedy and gratuitous violence make this a fun watch and not to be missed. The film clocks in at 1 h 33 m and is rated R. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. This episode of the podcast is dedicated to the lovely Sara B - happy belated birthday!
