Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar is more than a revered classic; it's an enduring influence on a wide array of role-playing games and moral-choice systems. The game launched many sequels, adding further depth and dimension to Richard Garriott's (also known as Lord British) mythic universe, and its virtues system was a precursor to the nuanced morality meters seen in modern games such as Mass Effect or The Witcher. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ongamecast/support

(0:00) - The boys open the show as boys do, talkin' balls - (4:06) - Daryl's got a bunion problem and Sammy is very unserious about it, “It's shaking hands with me from across the f**king room” (7:59) - The boys discuss the Alabama river boat brawl - (10:19) - Daryl has some strongly worded thoughts on why he agrees with the form of people's justice used in the river boat brawl, “Crimes that show and illustrate that you don't care for the time, energy, and lives of other people, should be met with maximum force” - (13:04) - Sammy points out how common public incidents with inconsiderate people are becoming and this leads the boys into a tangent about small towns, “They tried that s***t in a small town and got hit with a chair” - (19:17) - The boys give their opinions on who did, and didn't deserve the beats in the river boat brawl, “In this race based brawl … my feminism left my body” - (26:26) - Daryl discusses how this situation shows the level of privilege these white people felt when they started the brawl, “That's not heart! That's pure ignorance!” - (30:45) - The boys give some final, light hearted commentary on the river boat brawl, “Every single scene in that entire video is a Renaissance painting” (38:33) - The boys react to Donald Trump and two of his employees getting hit with additional charges for attempting to destroy video evidence - (40:21) - Sammy takes a short moment to discuss some of the more interesting text messages mentioned in the superseding indictment, “You know my homies Espi and Onage!” - (44:09) - Daryl breaks down what the Mar-a-Lago IT Director could and couldn't do with the security footage, “If I'm in IT, I don't need to be loyal to you. TCW Podcast Episode 163 - California Pacific We look at the company California Pacific. Founded by Al Remmers the company played a large role in launching the careers of Bill Budge and Richard Garriott. Al Remmers was in a unique position as a publisher. He had contacts with retailers spanning the entire country. In a way California Pacific was both one of the first distributors and used the EA model of programmers as rock stars. Promoting the games made by talented people, and promoting the individuals themselves. Unfortunately California Pacific had a too high royalty to those same programmers, and once dedicated distribution companies started to take over business declined. Al Remmers struggled with delegation, and unfortunately he developed a drug addiction. Though not well known today California Pacific did play a vital role during a crucial stage of the computer video game industry. Hosts on Deck: Al, Nick, RICHARD FREAKING GARRIOTT, LORD BRITISH, GAME DESIGNER, ENTREPRENEUR, ASTRONAUT, WORLD EXPLORER, MODERN DA VINCI! That's right folks! The moment you all know that I've been planning, hoping, waiting for since we started this podcast over four years ago! For any who many not know (though nearly all of you will) Richard is the creator of the Ultima series of video games. His company, Origin (and he as well) created the world's first officially titled MMORPG (Richard actually coined the phrase!) Ultima Online! We take a ride through Richard's history in the Game industry, do a bit of a deep dive on UO as well. We also talked about many of Richard's incredible adventures as an Explorer and Astronaut. We talk about the recently discovered Endurance Shipwreck, and Shackleton being one of Richard's heroes. Seriously. This episode is just GOLD for me and Nick, and we hope you all enjoy it as much as we did talking to Richard! Richard, thank you again for spending time with us, and as always, for sharing the worlds that you and Origin created. Links to peruse while you listen: Richard's Wiki Page! Broderbund was one of the most important publishers of the 80s and 90s, releasing seminal titles such as Choplifter, Prince of Persia, Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego, Print Shop, and Myst. But behind the scenes was a family, a true band of siblings, that proved that business didn't have to be a cutthroat winner-take-all affair. Gary Carlston, together with his brother Doug and sister Cathy, helped create a legendary company with a legacy like few others. Gary tells his story from humble beginnings peddling TRS-80 games to local shops to becoming a global powerhouse and, finally, having to call it quits to preserve the family. Blog link: http://videogamegrooves.com/2021/07/18/video-game-grooves-gaiden-1-gaiden-gits-arise-countach-for-giorgio-welcome-to-brght-falls/ No, you haven't fallen into an interdimensional facsimile of your favorite video-game-music-on-vinyl podcast, this is just the side story. In our first "gaiden" episode, we are joined by Ryan Huff from One Run Records to investigate the video games "adjacent" world of vinyl, and do we have a weird lineup for our inaugural outing. Anthony bring us the soundtrack to Ghost in the Shell: Arise, by Japanese alternative musician Cornelius. We flow with (yet remain pleasantly unsettled by) the surprisingly chill vibe of Arise, and ponder the lyrical technique and philosophical questions posed by the unique tracks. Jeremy then takes us into the mind of Shooter Jennings and Richard Garriott with Countach (for Giorgio), a tribute album dedicated to the prolific (and still kicking) music producer Giorgio Moroder... adjacent to video games by association with Lord British and with a launch party that took place inside Shroud of the Avatar, we take the opportunity to appreciate both the music of Moroder and Jennings doing whatever he darn well pleases. Finally, Ryan takes us on a guided tour of one of the most enigmatic releases we've ever heard of with Welcome to Bright Falls, the soundtrack to the prequel webisodes to the well-loved (but not THAT well-loved) Alan Wake from Remedy Entertainment. In a great example of life imitating art, this inexplicable album seems to have come from nobody nowhere who is willing to shed any light on it... but it's also filled with a variety of little original gems. Even though we head down some bunny-trails in this episode, we still make sure to keep up on the new releases and a couple of non-release tidbits (such as Rockstar Games starting their own music label with vinyl releases) and just have a generally good time. Hang out with us and get weird! In this new spin-off podcast Jeff Rud, Chris "ZombiePie" -REDACTED, and Braden "ArbitraryWater" -REDACTED- will be discussing obscure RPGs with the depth you've come to expect from Deep Listens! This week they discuss Ultima 4! They explain the roots of Ultima, the insufferable moral code of Lord British, and how all you need to escape an island in Ultima is patience. The audio quality in this episode is a little different thanks to some recording software quirks that should be ironed out by the next show. Be sure to write in to deeplistenspodcast@gmail.com to let us know what you think of the new show! I got the GoXLR Mixer, a Windows-based audio mixer geared towards streamers, which does change the audio sound of the podcast slightly and provides more "toys" that I will try to stay away from. We take some viewer comments about the recent death of Adobe Flash as well as a list of anticipated games for 2021. Lucasfilm Games has re-emerged and is now the caretaker of Lucas properties - and also signaled the end of EA's exclusive license over Star Wars, with Ubisoft announcing a new Star Wars game. Also announced was a new Indiana Jones game being made by MachineGames and Bethesda. A common sentiment over this from consumers was "nobody asked for this" which is never something that should be asked in regards of creative media. The Consumer Electronics Show was virtual this year, and even though there usually aren't software announcements there, Sony did accidentally leak third party release dates in their eventually pulled trailer. Then we talk to OLR about some of the great joys we've had meeting certain gaming luminaries during our years on the air.
I'm very excited to welcome Richard Garriott to the show. Sometimes known as Lord British, Richard is a video game trailblazer. As the creator of Ultima he helped forge a new genre in games, and with Ultima Online invented a whole new one. His latest, Shroud of the Avatar, was released just a few weeks ago and continues this storied tradition. As one of the only second generation astronauts in the world, he's also travelled into space. We talk about luck and timing, how his interests and passions coalesced with the rise of technology, and how he has been able to ride the crest of that wave. We talk about magic tricks and his collection of automatons. We hit on how he plays more games now than he ever has, the importance of Command & Conquer, how he had to learn to program before he could learn to play, how important the crest of a hill is in a video game world. We also talk about his life long journey to travel into space, what it felt like to finally achieve it, and whether or not a game can ever recreate that sensation."Don't tell me what I can't do."PATREON - patreon.com/checkpointsiTunes HERE - SUBSCRIBE / RATE / REVIEWTheme song by Samuel BakerArt work by Craig StevensonGames discussed: Hunt the Wumpus, Pong, Ultima, Escape, Dungeons & Dragons, Myst, Warcraft, Command & Conquer, Medal of Honor, Monument Valley, World of Warcraft, The Creeps, King's Quest, Wing Commander,
Here is the final part of my talk with Lord British. This is one of the most fascinating interviews I believe I will ever do. We go into Red Alert, StarCraft, VR and current EA/Broadsword leadership. I ask the question if Garriott ever thinks about taking back UO and the answer is a bit surprising to me. We also talk about virtual and real world economies which directly applies to the current free shards. The passion in the answers really took me for a ride as some of these basic principles such as gold are really much more complex then I originally thought. Probably the best story we will hear is how a thief evaded a ban while robbing a poor lady blind in front of Lord British! In this epic episode I get to sit one on one with Lord British himself. I get to know him I think like no one else I have heard and we explore the depths of not only his gaming career but what really inspires him to create these iconic games. I have really never had such a gracious guest give his time like this and really answer the hard ball questions. As a actual avid UO player both back then and currently on UO Outlands I believe I asked some questions that haven't ever been asked. As one of the most creative and influential figures in the MMO and RPG community Lord British tells his tale like only he can! His background involves creating video games, space travel, global exploration, and collecting unusual things. Known online as Lord British of the Ultima Series, Richard Garriott has seen and experienced a lot in his extraordinary career. “Gaming over the last few decades has gone from non-existent to larger in the economic and social impact of all movies combined, all tv combined, and all print combined... It really is a dominant big business.” Richard stopped by the podcast and chatted with us about his long and historied gaming career and his love for space with Fred Schmidt, Capital Factory’s Director of International Affairs.

Jerod and Jeremy are on a hunt for vengeance! And by "vengeance" we mean "video games", but also "talking to you about the games they played"... Words are so complex sometimes! This week, Jeremy has been playing the new Forsaken DLC for Destiny 2, and talks about the campaign and the new "gambit" multiplayer mode. He's also playing Another World (aka Out of This World) on the PS Vita and PS4, and talks about the idea of learning-by-failing and the game's historical context. Jerod seeks virtue in Richard Garriott's fully-released Shroud of the Avatar, but also finds himself returning to the loving arms of his usual fare. On Richard Garriott, Austin’s legendary creator of online virtual worlds and real-life adventurer joins us; he’s been to space, he’s been to the Titanic, and he even hit the North Pole recently with his kids. But he's best known for designing role-playing video games such as "Ultima: Online" and his latest, "Shroud of the Avatar," which launched out of Austin in March. He tells us what real-life adventures make it into his games and what it's been like for Lord British to embrace fatherhood. PLUS: Texan Melissa Radke has amassed millions of YouTube fans for her tell-all videos on parenting fails, marriage, and upside-down French braiding. Now, she has a book! "Eat Cake. Be Brave" just released, and details how, at age 41, she made a decision to live a radically braver life. In a Webb Report, American-Statesman social media editor Eric Webb tackles a pesky problem: skeeters! In a callout to readers, we asked for home remedies to repel mosquitos and to deal with ‘squito bites. He tells us what some of those homeopathic ideas were and whether we think they’re very effective. And in our recommendations segment, “A Toast": Instant Pot, a Twitter meme about “on-brand childhood stories” and the sex-positive book “Come As You Are” by Emily Nagoski. Richard Garriott (AKA "Lord British:"), the video game pioneer behind the Ultima series reflects on the industry he helped create and his many non-game adventures including his time as a private space tourist who spent two weeks orbiting the Earth. We delved into how drugs were an important part of the early technology industry; how online games help keep society from disintegrating; and why space is gross (but still worth it).

As Fortengard best puts it in the episode, Richard Garriott is one of the first (if not the first) writers as video game creators. It's for that reason that the Ultima series stands out, not to mention the drastic direction change of the middle three "avatar" games. Jam can't make it so Fred joins guest Fortengard to discuss the legacy of "Lord British" and the unique franchise he created. PLEASE NOTE: We are aware of the echo effect that is added to Fred in this episode. The problem was identified and will be corrected on future episodes. Sorry.
