Malkie Schwartz - From Fundy to Freedom FighterDivorced: Ultra-orthodox JudaismIn her early 20s, Malkie Schwartz chose to leave her ultra-orthodox Jewish community. Within 3 years, she founded Footsteps, the first organization in North America to help people who wish to leave the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community and live in mainstream society. Footsteps gained notoriety in 2017, with the release of the Netflix documentary “One of Us.” To date, Footsteps has served over 1300 individuals. Malkie is also co-founder and board member of the Rights and Religions Forum. In 2023, the Rights and Religions Forum (RARF) launched the Borgenicht Fellowship Program for Community Leaders. This first-of-its-kind program connects a diverse cohort of leaders who are challenging religious oppression and supporting the ability of individuals raised in insular religious groups to make personal choices and lead lives that reflect their personal values and beliefs. I met Malkie when a Footsteps representative reached out to me in 2021 interested in sending a Footsteps contingent to the inaugural Conference on Religious Trauma (CORT), and today I am proud to be a Borgenicht Fellow. Jason Pollick - Confessions of a Former PriestDivorced: ChristianityJason was an atheist as a teenager, so he was as surprised as anyone when he had a spiritual experience that told him to become a priest. He tried to avoid this call, but eventually became an Anglican priest, a vocation he lived for 12 years. After being diagnosed with PTSD in 2019 because of his experiences in the church, he spent 2 years on disability for mental health reasons. During that time, he began to question his faith and discovered he could no longer support the idea of a loving god who guided the course of history. Jason regained his freedom of thought, embraced his atheism and relinquished his clerical orders. Jason is now a registered social worker in Ontario. He works in private practice as a therapist, offering virtual sessions throughout Ontario, and in-person session in downtown Ottawa. Bottom of the 9th Breakdown: Detroit Tigers pitcher Spencer Turnbull (second round, 63rd overall, 2014) recorded the 8th no-hitter in Tigers history, and the first since Justin Verlander's feat on May 7, 2011 in Toronto. In his 5-0 win over the Mariners in Seattle (May 18, 2021), Turnbull gave up 2 walks, and threw 117 pitches, 77 for strikes. In the Bottom of the 9th he faced Mitch Haniger, the Seattle Mariners most consistent hitter, and struck him out on three straight pitches. The last pitch was a 95 mph four-seam fastball up in the zone. It was the first time in his career that he pitched into the 8th inning. John Ellis and Joel Underwood will play two arms negotiators in InD theatre's production of Lee Blessing's A Walk in the Woods. 7 pm at BIMA on Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays, April 18 - 28. Set during the Cold War, the show examines the growing relationship of two patriots on opposing sides. This lighthearted drama tackles the question that still troubles us today: can we develop understanding despite our differing opinions? Net neutrality is a hot topic at the moment, in light of changes proposed by US Federal Communication Commission (FCC) Chairman Tom Wheeler that would allow Internet Service Providers to charge a premium for those who can afford to pay to deliver their content better and faster to their online audiences. This issue has many in the museum sector concerned, with a post by Nancy Proctor on the Museums and the Web site noting that “It’s not hard to imagine a scenario in which the only way museum content gets seen online is if the museum has done a deal with a major online publisher.” Similarly, the Museum Computer Group (UK) have written that “every audience member and institution we work with would be affected if net neutrality was lost and non-discriminatory access to information was put at risk in the United States of America.” In this episode, the Punks are joined by Titus Bicknell from Museums and the Web, and Chief Digital Officer for RLJ Entertainment, to unpack the concept of net neutrality, and find out what the proposed changes might mean for museums Also in the show: Suse shares some big news, and Jeff previews his session at the AAM Conference, on in Seattle May 18-21.
