Traditional psychology is not without its limits, and on this week's episode of The Unbeatable Mind, holistic psychologist Dr. Nicole LePera is here to discuss those limits and the importance of integrating mind, body, and spirit for true healing. Nicole opens up about her own struggles with achievements and the emptiness that followed—-even at the peak of her professional success. She delves into the evolution of therapy, and how moving beyond traditional models can bring about more transformative and resilient ways of living. Tackling issues of codependency, often shaped by one's childhood environment(s), Nicole dissects how these patterns impact one's adult life and relationships. Her perceptive way of dissecting past trauma can be transformative for anyone who finds themselves on the path towards healing. Dr. Nicole found herself frustrated with her work as a therapist. She knew that she wanted better for herself and her clients. At the same time, she began to face some hard truths about her own family dynamics, core beliefs, and dysfunctional patterns that led to an emotional breakdown. This led to her own healing journey, and after 2 years of deep transformation she began teaching this work on social media, creating a community of #selfhealers. Dr. Nicole created the SelfHealers Circle to allow people to go on their own journey and create who they want to become. Dr. Nicole lives in Los Angeles, California and loves anywhere that involves the stillness (and quiet) of nature. Key Takeaways: Holistic Approaches to Healing: Learn about the necessity of multidimensional approaches to healing and how essential it is to integrate emotional, physical and spiritual aspects. External Validation vs. Internal Fulfillment: Discover how even those who appear to be performing at their peak are often the ones seeking external validation—no achievement can take the place of genuine personal connection. The Limitations of Traditional Psychology: Recognize the limitations in modern day methods of therapy—they lack the integration of body and mind. Origins of Codependency: Learn how childhood environments and dysfunctional family dynamics play a role in forming codependent tendencies and what safety mechanisms, if applied early, can help prevent them. What are your emotional needs? How do you communicate them clearly? Today, Jay welcomes back Dr. Nicole LePera, a holistic psychologist, best-selling author, and founder of the SelfHealers Circle, a global community for self-healing. She is the author of the New York Times bestseller "How to Do the Work," and her latest book, "How to Be the Love You Seek," guides readers on breaking cycles, finding peace, and healing relationships. Dr. LePera is known for her approachable, transformative approach to mental wellness, empowering individuals to heal themselves and live authentically. Nicole talks about how our earliest experiences shape our adult relationships. She explains the concept of trauma bonds—dysfunctional patterns that often stem from childhood but persist into adulthood, affecting how we connect with others. These bonds can feel familiar and even comforting, but they often prevent us from forming healthy, fulfilling relationships. Jay and Nicole explore how awareness is the first step toward breaking these patterns. They emphasize the importance of understanding our subconscious beliefs and the roles we play in relationships, often unknowingly repeating cycles of pain and misunderstanding. She talks about the importance of staying present, learning to regulate our emotions, and building healthier habits that align with our true selves, and offers practical advice on how to navigate the complexities of love, whether it's setting boundaries with toxic family members or letting go of unrealistic expectations in romantic relationships. In this interview, you'll learn: How to recognize trauma bonds How to break the cycle of reactivity How to set healthy boundaries How to cultivate self-awareness How to develop emotional resilience How to foster a growth mindset in relationships Remember, every moment is an opportunity to choose differently, to show up for ourselves with kindness, and to build the relationships we truly deserve. On this episode of 'The Dude Therapist', host Eli Weinstein interviews Dr. Nicole Lepera as she shares her journey from traditional clinical training to a more holistic approach. Dr. Lepera discusses the importance of concepts like polyvagal theory and the brain-gut connection in mental health. She also explores the struggles of modern relationships and the impact of societal messaging on unrealistic expectations. Tune in to gain practical tools for navigating conflict, addressing past traumas, and practicing self-care for personal growth and healthier relationships. [00:00:06] Summary: Dr. Nicole Lepera, a holistic psychologist and author, is featured on the Dude Therapist podcast. They discuss various topics related to love, relationships, and personal growth. [00:03:29] Feeling disconnected, unfulfilled, and seeking change. [00:08:04] Increased awareness of relationship struggles. [00:12:33] Humans evolved in group-based living in villages with emotional connection and physical support. However, modern society has shifted towards relying on one primary partner for all needs, leading to frustration and disappointment. This pattern stems from early developmental experiences and the belief that the right person can fulfill all emotional needs. Society and culture also reinforce this idea. [00:16:09] Summary: The damaging beliefs and patterns in relationships need to be challenged and reframed. [00:20:11] Love requires intentional choices, and conflict is natural in relationships. Learning how to navigate and resolve conflicts is important to create a safe and secure environment for self-expression and growth. [00:24:15] Issues arise from conflicting beliefs. [00:27:46] Summary: Awareness of our nervous system's role in relationships and the ability to tolerate differences can lead to compassion and acceptance. [00:31:26] Value-driven differences can impact relationships. It's important to have open conversations about values early on to determine compatibility. Sometimes, a break or ending is necessary for personal growth. [00:35:16] Moving on from deep relationships requires grieving. [00:37:39] Summary: Consciousness and mindfulness are key to authentic relationships and personal growth. [00:42:17] Mindfulness is about being present and aware. It involves paying attention to our thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations. We can make new choices and change by becoming conscious of our patterns and narratives. The conditioned self is a byproduct of these patterns, such as overachieving or people-pleasing. Breaking these patterns is challenging because they are deeply ingrained in our holistic model of being. [00:46:09] Beliefs shape our actions and identity. [00:50:12] Struggle with self-care and emotional support. [00:54:20] Summary: The speaker discusses the importance of love and support from others, expresses gratitude for the opportunity to connect, and encourages feedback from listeners. Dr. Nicole LePera along with her partner and co-creator Jenna Weakland are on the podcast today reflecting the courage to look, share and heal. Together they lead + co-create the SelfHealers Circle, SelfHealers Soundboard Podcast and the many offerings from The Holistic Psychologist. As a clinical psychologist in private practice, Dr. Nicole often found herself frustrated by the limitations of traditional psychotherapy. Wanting more for her patients— and self— she began a journey developing a united philosophy of mental, physical, and spiritual health that equips people with the tools necessary to heal themselves. She's the author of the #1 New York Times Bestselling Book "How To Do The Work" and her latest workbook "How To Meet Your Self" was released on December 6th. Jenna's healing journey began after experiencing the trauma of poverty and addiction throughout her childhood years. This led her to tumultuous teenage years and a breaking point that came in her mid 20s. After her own deep transformation, she began owning her gift for inspiring others and made a conscious choice to use her life as her greatest teaching; leading and empowering others to embark on the journey of becoming themselves. Jenna's own vision of creating a new, holistic approach to healing divinely led her to Dr. Nicole (via Instagram). Prior to coming across this work, I had a consciousness practice for years, meditating and journaling. What I didn't have were the simple steps and tools to create safety in my nervous system to change the behaviors I was conscious of. Participating in the work, building internal trust by focusing on making and keeping one small promise a day has been transformational in my life. We can create safety in our nervous systems by slowing down which in a beautifully twisted way really speeds up the process. I am grateful for Jenna and Nicole's sustained courage to look, share and heal. Some Highlights from this conversation with Nicole + Jenna: Depersonalize shame + connect internally to create safety. The importance of attuning + giving language to children with regards to feelings. NOT saying it's okay when the child is clearly NOT okay. Create a foundation of consciousness to create change. It takes so much energy to stay detached from the reality of what is happening, accept reality to expand. Moments of authentic divine presence allows others their own cathartic release all around the world. The human desire for emotional attunement, to feel seen and known. Simplify to connect, deepen intimacy, and heal. Pure presence connects to the chanel – divine intelligence. Small steps you can take today to meet yourself. Create internal trust to allow, create and receive the “impossible” I'm Possible. I am excited to share that thanks to The Holistic Psychologist team, I have 5 copies of How to Meet Yourself to giveaway. My guest this week is Dr. Nicole LePera. In this episode, I've got my dear friend, Dr. Nicole LePera, The Holistic Psychologist, to do a dive into our personal and professional experiences in the world of mental health, kids, and parenting. We talk about how we've come to understand mental health diagnoses and treatment differently over time, what we need to do to improve mental health for ourselves and children, how we can be better parents to our kids and ourselves, and much more! When the two of us get together, there's never a shortage of topics so we go into other favorites as well, like what it means to be a conscious participant, dealing with information overload vs. the implementation gap, the concept of reparenting, and of course, her new workbook (which is amazing!), How to Meet Your Self. Dr. Nicole LePera is trained in clinical psychology at Cornell University, the New School for Social Research and the Philadelphia School of Psychoanalysis. When you begin to heal and change, your relationships tend to follow, including with yourself. This was Dr. Nicole LePera’s experience as she found herself frustrated with her work as a therapist. Coming from a background of battling anxiety herself, she knew that she wanted better for herself and her clients, and after going on her own healing journey with the help of research and informed psychology, she began teaching these secrets on social media, creating a community of #selfhealers. She is also the author of the e-book, How to do the Work and the creator of the SelfHealers Circle. Dive right into this episode as we hear more about Dr. Nicole’s story and learn how to heal yourself from a trained psychologist. In this episode Barry shares her story of self-healing. Barry was a Licensed Clinical Social Worker for 17 years where she worked with Children, adolescents and adults in an acute care psychiatric hospital, facilitating therapy and substance abuse groups. Later, she worked in the DC foster care system and finally settled into a private practice. She retired her licensure last June because she feels that she can no longer label people as" disordered." She believes that all disorders are a result of trauma. Last November, Barry joined the first ever Selfhealers Circle with the Holistic Psychologist, Dr. Nicole LePera, where she feels that her healing abilities for herself and others are aligned towards the Self-Healing philosophy of empowerment, awakening, ending ancestral cycles, + healing to create a new world. Barry recently created a safe, healing space for those who want help in their personal self healing journeys.
