Broadway’s Ariel, Sierra Boggess (“The Little Mermaid,” “School of Rock,” “The Phantom of the Opera,” “It Shoulda Been You”), is the guest on this episode of “E-Ticket to Broadway” and shares just how much she’s always loved Disney, especially the sidekicks. As a kid Sierra never wanted to be Cinderella—she wanted to be Gus Gus, and has always loved “The Sword in the Stone” and Madam Mim and is ready to bring her to Broadway. Listen as she recalls going to Walt Disney World for the first time when she was six years old and loving the Haunted Mansion and taking a photo with Goofy—to then going to Toyko Disney Sea and Disneyland Paris as an adult. Sierra beautifully explains what makes a Disney Park so magical and “how they do everything they can to keep you invested in the magic," and shares a really wonderful observation that the Parks may be more deeply appreciated by the "young at heart." Sierra has a lot of love--from her must-do attractions including the Haunted Mansion, Indiana Jones, The Matterhorn and/or Expedition Everest; to her memories of her Broadway debut in "The Little Mermaid"; to "Brave" and learning about never giving up from watching Disney movies." She recounts stories with Jodi Benson, Jonathan Freeman, and Sherie Rene Scott, and shares her dream of performing in "Disney on Ice." This episode features a very intense conversation on Mouse Ears, and a very strong opinion of "It's a Small World," and the sounds of Britney Spears singing classic Disney tunes as only Sierra Boggess can do. Betsy Wolfe has established herself as one of the most versatile and keenly intelligent Broadway performers of her generation. She recently starred as Jenna Hunterson, the title role in the Tony nominated musical Waitress. Prior to that, she played Cordelia, one of the one of the lovable “lesbians from next door,” in the Broadway revival of Falsettos directed by James Lapine, which recently aired on PBS. She is perhaps best known for her critically acclaimed performance as Cathy in the off-Broadway revival of The Last Five Years.  In TV, she was most recently seen in a guest star role on season 2 of the CBS series INSTINCT. She also just wrapped the indie feature FIRST ONE IN with Georgia King.   Originally from California, Betsy received her BFA in musical theatre from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. At age twenty—prior to graduation and prior being able to legally drink or get a British pilot’s license—she made her Carnegie Hall debut with the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra under Maestro Erich Kunzel. After receiving her BFA, Betsy quickly starred in the San Francisco and Boston companies of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Soon after, she made her Broadway debut in the revival of 110 in the Shade. Betsy started to gain attention for her next role in both the off-Broadway and Broadway productions of Sherie Rene Scott’s Everyday Rapture, where she played one of the two Mennonettes.   Only a few years later, Betsy would be Scott’s successor in one of contemporary musical theatre’s most challenging and well-known roles: Cathy in Second Stage Theatre’s revival of Jason Robert Brown’s The Last Five Years.  Her complex performance as Cathy was lauded by critics and audiences alike.   Betsy’s other Broadway credits include Ellen in the 2014 production of Bullets Over Broadwaydirected by Susan Stroman and Rosa Bud in The Mystery of Edwin Drood. She also appeared as Beth in the Encores! production of Merrily We Roll Along. She starred in the La Jolla Playhouse world premiere production of Bobby Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez’s new musical Up Here, and created the role of Mary Ann Singleton in ACT's world premiere of Tales of the City, a musical based on the Armistead Maupin novels.  Betsy made her Metropolitan Opera debut in Douglas Carter Beane’s adaptation of Die Fledermaus. She has been a guest artist for over 50 symphony, pops, and philharmonic orchestras across the U.S. and internationally including the New York Philharmonic and Chicago Symphony Orchestra. She collaborated with The New York Pops and played to sold-out crowds at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center with their Broadway Today and Women of Notesconcerts. Her recent collaboration with the BBC Orchestra and Jason Robert Brown ended up being recorded for Friday Music Nights for the BBC and can be heard on their channel.   She can be heard on the recordings of Falsettos, Bullets over Broadway, The Last Five Years,The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Everyday Rapture, Stage Door Canteen, 35MM, and Merrily We Roll Along. She can also be seen in the film adaptation of The Last Five Years. Betsy is currently mini- touring with her one woman show ALL BETS ARE OFF and primarily lives in New York with her husband.  She is so very proud to have created and co-founded the program Broadway Evolved, which has revolutionized the summer camp for both theatre students and educators alike.

We also compare everything to The Producers, confess how much we like (Norbert Leo) Butz and we CANNOT lie, and wish Spamalot would spam a little less. Did we just hear an alarm start ringing? No, it’s just our first episode, you guys! And it’s a doozy of a show that we Broadway Babies decided to talk about: the original off-Broadway 2002 production of Jason Robert Brown’s “The Last Five Years.” We'll go down the track list rabbit hole of this cast recording, song by song, talk about its insightful score, how much Alex adores Sherie Rene Scott, Daisha definitely not being Team Jamie, and then give our totally unqualified critiques of the show. Grab your corned beef sandwich, put on your Daisy Mae sweater, and take your time! Podcast cover art: David Taylor Twitter: @bwaybabies Facebook: Facebook.com/broadwaybabiespodcast iTunes / Spotify / Amazon Songs: “I’m Still Hurting” by Sherie Rene Scott “The Next Ten Minutes” by Norbert Leo Butz and Sherie Rene Scott “Climbing Uphill” by Sherie Rene Scott Show Notes: This Google Plus blog has an amazing musical/lyrical/dramatic analysis of almost every song in the show’s original cast recording. Like, he goes into such detail about one word or lyric line and it’s just fantastic to give a read. There’s a Last Five Years medley; it’s kind of weird mostly because it was too short and not enough Cathy songs. Miscast Raul Esparza and guest star NLB do Next Ten Minutes omg. Someone also proposed to his wife with Next Ten Minutes, which is sweet, until you remember what happens in the show.

YOU GUYS!! The day has finally arrived! We are SO thrilled to share this hilarious and heart warming interview with Betsy Wolfe with all of you!Betsy made her Broadway debut in the 2007 production of "110 In The Shade" (which she got through an OPEN CALL! Open calls really work sometimes, you guys!). Her next Broadway gig was alongside our pal Lindsay Mendez backing up Sherie Rene Scott in one of my all time favorite shows, "Everyday Rapture" in 2010. In 2012 she starred as Rosa Bud in Roundabout Theater Company production of "The Mystery of Edwin Drood" before going on to win the coveted role of Cathy in the Second Stage production of Jason Robert Brown's "The Last Five" Years in 2013. She was last seen on Broadway in the 2014 production of "Bullets Over Broadway." Of course, she recently starred as Elsa in the lab production of the Broadway bound "Frozen." That all happened after this interview was recorded, so we don't get into that here....it just means that she'll hopefully come back to talk about it!She was such a great interview. Enjoy!

Co-Directors Michael Mayer and Dick Scanlan tell all about their new hit play "Whorl Inside A Loop." Co-written by Scanlan and Sheire Rene Scott, the play is loosely based on Scanlan and Scott's experience working with prison inmates on writing and performing monologues about the circumstances that landed the inmates in jail. Currently playing at Second Stage Theater, the new work is a New York Times Critic's pick.

A new Off Broadway play by Sherie Rene Scott and Dick Scanlan tells the semi-autobiographical account of their experiences working with prison inmates. The play's unusual title — "Whorl Inside a Loop" — refers to a particular fingerprint pattern. Scott also stars in the play as a well-regarded actress who agrees to teach six inmates how to tell their stories behind the bars of a men's maximum security prison. Sharing intimate and sometimes hilarious details of their former lives, this unlikely group forms a bond. New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood offers his review.

The Producer's Perspective Podcast with Ken Davenport

Kurt Deutsch is an actor, director, record producer, and film producer. He is the Senior Vice President for Theatrical & Catalog Development for Warner/Chappell Music, and President of Sh-K-Boom Records, a division of Warner Arts Music. The past 20 years have wreaked havoc on the music industry, and cast albums have become an endangered species as a result. Luckily, one guy saw this change coming. And back in the early part of the millennium, Kurt struck out on his own, and with Broadway actress Sherie Rene Scott he founded the independent label Sh-K-Boom Records. Its mission? Save Broadway music, one cast album at a time. Since then, Sh-K-Boom and its upstart sister label Ghostlight Records have grabbed the lion’s share of the cast album biz away from the big “studio” companies, recording big hits like The Book of Mormon, In the Heights, Next to Normal and many more. And Kurt sat down with me for this week’s episode to talk about . . . The state of the cast album and why every show needs one. Why albums should be part of a show’s capitalization, not an afterthought (he changed my mind on this one). What we will sell at the merch stands when CDs are no longer made. How to get an album for sale by opening night. Why if you’re writing a show, you have to have a demo.
