Her Broadway debut, was in the very iconic, Les Miserables where she starred as Cosette along side Brennyn Lark (featured in earlier this season). Prior to this engagement, she also toured the country in the ensemble for the 25th anniversary national tour. Next stop in the world of Benko's career was sharing her Jewish heritage in the Broadway revival of Fiddler on the Roof. In this show, she was in the ensemble and understudied Hodel and Chava. This production included Broadway legend, Danny Burstein, rising superstar, Jessica Vosk and Season 1 podcast guest, Dee Roscioli. Over the last few years, one of the most exciting companies on the musical theatre scene has been QuickFantastic. Behind the company is acclaimed musical director Alex Parker who has worked on sell-out shows like Barnum at the Menier Chocolate Factory, Mame at Hope Mill Theatre and Les Miserables in London's West End. Today, Alex Parker is known for putting on luscious musical theatre concerts; assembling top West End talent with glorious orchestras for special evenings celebrating the art of musical theatre. Some recent highlights have included A Little Night Music in Holland Park starring Joanna Riding and Janie Dee and Sunset Boulevard at Royal Albert Hall with Mazz Murray and Ramin Karimloo. Later in February, Quickfantastic will also be staging a special concert production of legendary musical Gypsy with 7 actresses starring as Mama Rose. As well as this, Alex is also currently in hometown Guildford getting ready to stage a production of The Bridges of Madison County. As well as conducting musicals, Alex is also a composer and has created several musicals with lyricist Katie Lam. Last year saw the first workshop of The Danish Girl and he hopes to share the full show with an audience soon. He tells us about his collaboration process with Katie Lam and reveals to us they are still continuing to work together and find new subjects to develop shows on. In this exclusive interview, Alex Parker also tells us about his earliest experiences of seeing live musical productions at the National Theatre as well as discovering musicals like The Light in the Piazza and finding his love for musical directors. We get a real glimpse at the man behind the baton as he maintains that he is a fan first and foremost. It's truly incredible that despite lockdowns and a pandemic, Alex Parker has been busier than ever, providing work for some of the brightest in the business and showcasing the magic of musical theatre to audiences. The Bridges of Madison County runs from 2nd-5th February at Electric Theatre, Guildford and Gypsy at Alexandra Palace Theatre will play for one night only on 21st February. Tickets for both shows are available now!
Alex Parker is a musical director, composer, conductor...you name it, if it has anything to do with music or musicals, Alex is all over it..and now he has his own orchestra, to boot! Alex is the musical director on a massive concert presentation of Andrew Lloyd Weber's musical Sunset Boulevard in the iconic Royal Albert Hall. Sunset Boulevard is perhaps on of ALW's most beloved scores, and in my opinion the most complete musical in his canon. And this concert version promises to be a BLAST with Mazz Murray as Norma Desmond, Ramin Karimloo playing Joe Gillis. And a musical wouldn't be complete without a Strallen sister, so Zizi steps in to play Betty Shaefer. AND, get this, with a 40...that is right, 40-piece orchestra. From Iran to Italy to Canada and finally to London, this performer forged a path uniquely his own, knowing the only failure is not trying. “When someone puts a seed in my head, I'll dive in not knowing how deep it is, but I'll just go for it and just see what happens.” Ramin Karimloo is an Olivier and Tony Award nominee who made his name in the early 2000’s starring in some of the West End's most enduring productions, notably Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables, after becoming the youngest actor ever to play the Phantom in 2007. Ramin later originated the role of Phantom in the 2010 sequel Love Never Dies, and made his Broadway debut in the 2014 revival of Les Misérables as Valjean (earning a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical). Throughout his career he has released two EP’s and two albums as an independent recording artist, including his 2019 album From Now On which landed on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. Ramin now hosts his own podcast called “The Hang” on the Broadway Podcast Network, and in addition to playing the dreamy Dr. Kian Madani in Holby City on the BBC, he can be heard playing the dreamy Stavros in “As The Curtain Rises”, Broadway’s first original podcast soap opera. Shortly after his birth in Iran during the Iranian Revolution, Ramin’s family escaped the country and found themselves in Italy. After several years in Italy, and relocating to a small town in Ontario, it was a 7th grade field trip to see Phantom of the Opera when things changed for Ramin. He left the theater that day thinking, “I want to make people feel like this…”. During our conversation, Ramin chronicles his journey from high school, to cruise ships, to London - a journey fueled by his endless pursuit of the goals he set for himself as a teenager. Ramin emphasizes the impact encouragement from others can have on your life, and speaks fondly of the bar owner/father figure who championed his dream of one day playing the Phantom. He also revisits the initial impact of COVID-19 on his creative pursuits, and shares details about his most recent creations - a clothing line, a production company, a podcast, and more. Stephen Lobo's filmography is populated by characters who, despite being wildly different from each other, are nearly identical in how hard they fight for what they want: earnest Dev on Arctic Air; take-no-prisoners Kellog on Continuum; womanizing head chef Ramir on Godiva's. It's something that Stephen himself has exemplified since his very first time on stage in a community theatre production of Grease (that also featured future podcast host Sabrina Furminger and future Broadway star Ramin Karimloo) – and in his case, it's all about craft and characters. In this freewheeling and contemplative conversation, Stephen reflects on his journey from Kenickie to Ramir to Kellog and beyond, and the remarkable artists he's worked with along the way. Episode 156: Double Les Miz Double Valjean Host Lindsay Price and Theatrefolk co-owner Craig Mason had a unique theatrical experience. They saw Les Miserables twice in three days. The first show had the closing night performance of Ramin Karimloo as Jean Valjean and the second saw Alfie Boe in his opening night performance. Two actors. Two Valjean's. How did each performer interpret the role? In a long running piece like Les Miserables is there room for actor interpretation? What were the similarities and the differences? Tune in to find out! Show Notes Les Miserables Ramin Karimloo Alfie Boe Episode Transcript Welcome to TFP – The Theatrefolk Podcast – the place to be for Drama teachers, Drama students, and theatre educators everywhere. Woohoo! I had to get excited there! I'm Lindsay Price, resident playwright for Theatrefolk. Hello! I hope you're well. Thanks for listening! This is Episode 156. You can find any links to this episode in the show notes which are at theatrefolk.com/episode156. Today, today is a Lindsay and Craig talk – Lindsay and Craig, Lindsay and Craig. That's Lindsay Price – me – and Craig Mason – co-owner of Theatrefolk and my co-cohort – co-cohort? Is that a word? Cohort! Cohort in crime. We had a unique theatrical experience a while back. We saw the same show twice, a couple of days after each other. We saw Les Miz with two different actors in the lead role – two different Jean Valjeans. One on his closing night and one on his opening night. So, what were the similarities? What were the differences? Did we like one more than the other? Is there room for actor interpretation in a long-running show like Les Miz? So many questions! I bet we have answers! I hope we have answers! We better have something, you know – otherwise, it'd be a pretty short podcast. So, let's find out. LINDSAY: All right, let me set the scene. This is Lindsay. Hello everybody. I am also here with Craig Mason. CRAIG: Hello everybody. LINDSAY: Hello everybody. It is quarter to 11 p.m. on a Tuesday night and we are in New York City. We have just come back to the hotel after seeing Les Miz – Les Misérables – for the second time in two days. Now, there is a very specific reason why we have seen them twice and I'm going to turn this over to Craig. Craig, why did we decide to come to New York specifically to see Les Miz basically two times in a row? We saw it Sunday afternoon and then we saw it Tuesday night. CRAIG: A few months ago, I was looking at the theatre area in Reddit and there was a mention that Alfie Boe was coming in to play Jean Valjean in Les Miz. One of the comments on it was Ramin Karimloo was the existing Jean Valjean and he was leaving the show and Alfie Boe was coming in and one of the comments on the post was, “Wouldn't it be amazing to be able to go see closing night for Ramin Karimloo and then come back two days later to see Alfie Boe do it?” LINDSAY: And you said, “Hey, Lindsay!” CRAIG: This little lightbulb went over my head and I thought, “Wow! That would be kind of cool to see!” And so, we checked our calendar. The trip is very tight against some other plans we have but we were able to squeeze it all in and here we are. LINDSAY: Yeah, and we were like, “Well, you know, we won't be able to do this because the tickets will be extraordinary.” No, the tickets were pretty much normal. Okay, is the time going to fit? Yeah, the time fits. And here we are! Craig, what was the first time you were exposed to Alfie Boe? CRAIG: Well, I first knew of Alfie Boe from watching the 25th anniversary production of Les Misérables which was showing on PBS. I was actually never really a fan of the show but, when it was around, I was in theatre school and I was in that phase where anything that had more than five lights in it was like a mega-musical and was not cool because we were doing these shows with chairs and flashlights and that was cool.
