You surely know Florence Henderson best as Carol Brady, but did you know she’s actually a ghost made of butterflies? That’s one of our theories, anyway. This week we’re joined by our own very special guest star, novelist Amy Spalding, who is extremely lovely but in ways quite different from Rowlf. We’re baffled by one song, delighted by another, digress into butts in white satin (who hasn’t?), and have some strong feelings as things really get started on Kermit and Piggy’s backstage romance/HR violation. https://www.muppeturgy.com/episodes/florence-henderson

At the start of their senior year in high school, James (a girl with a boy’s name) and Kat are inseparable, but by graduation, they’re no longer friends. James prepares to head off to college as she reflects on the dissolution of her friendship with Kat while, in alternating chapters, Kat thinks about being newly in love with her first girlfriend and having a future that feels wide open. Over the course of senior year, Kat wants nothing more than James to continue to be her steady rock, as James worries that everything she believes about love and her future is a lie when her high-school sweetheart parents announce they’re getting a divorce. Amy Spalding delicately explores the breakup of childhood best friends. Told in dual timelines—half of the chapters moving forward in time and half moving backward—We Used to Be Friends is funny, honest and full of heart.

Returning guest, author and all around awesome person Amy Spalding shares her love of the epic TV drama, Grey's Anatomy! Thanks as always to Molly Lewis for our theme music and Bryan Ward for our artwork!
Writer Amy Spalding sits down with Cameron to discuss her day job in marketing, not feeling accepted, and bi identity.
This week, Steve and Nadia talk with YA author Amy Spalding (@theames) about the specific topic of TV's long-running medical drama Grey's Anatomy, and its 24th episode, Season 8 finale, "Flight." We get into the doctors, Seattle Grace, the plane crash, and why Amy loves Grey's so much still. What else is filmed in Big Bear? What about the bureaucracy of hospital ownership? And exactly how many secret sisters does Dr. Meredith Grey have?! Let's do this again some time!
We're back! Join Caroline, Jenna, and special guest Amy Spalding (@theames) for a discussion of the season two premiere, "In the Game," in which a group of B movie actors struggle to pay for a funeral, all the Fishers bring their significant others together for an ill-fated dinner, and Nate discovers what happened to that stray tab of ecstasy from season one, causing the "meaning of life" to be revealed to him in a (racist and problematic) dream sequence.

In this episode we discuss the Adam Silvera/Becky Albertali collaboration, What If It's Us. We discuss whether we're team Arthur or Ben, and have a long discussion about punctuality. I'm super embarrassed to have realized that our discussion of punctuality does not include a discussion of class. Arthur comes from money; Ben does not, and I somehow managed to miss that when talking about the fact that Ben has to rely on modes of more affordable transportation. I wish we'd had this conversation, and I may ask us to get back together to record an amendment to this episode in the future. But feel free to take us to task for missing it here. We'd love to hear your take. Additionally, Lindsey suggests More Nate Than Ever by Tim Federle. Molly suggests The Sun Is Also A Star by Nicola Yoon. Amy suggests The Art of Being Normal by Lisa Williamson, every book by David Levithan, and Becky Albertali's books. Cash Money suggests The Summer of Jordi Perez (and the Best Burger in Los Angeles) by Amy Spalding and From Twinkle With Love by Sandhya Menon.
We each give a rundown of the things we enjoyed most in 2018 and it's a ridiculously long list. Lindsey: The 57 Bus by Dashka Slater, I am the Messenger by Markus Zusak, Cardboard Kingdom (various authors), Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell, Runaways by Brian K. Vaughn and Adrian Alphana, Saga vol. 8 by Brian K. Vaughn and Fiona Staples, As the Crow Flies (by Melanie Gillman?), The First Rule of Punk by Celia C. Pérez, The Hazelwood by Melissa Albert, Saints and Misfits by S.K. Ali, Ladycastle by Delilah S. Dawson, The Summer of Jordi Perez (and the best burger in Los Angeles) by Amy Spalding, Leah on the Offbeat AND Simon vs. the Homosapiens Agenda by Becky Albertali, The Lady's Guide to Piracy and Petticoats by Mackenzi Lee, Everything Leads to You by Nina LaCour, Drum Roll, Please by Lisa Jenn Bigelow, Her Name in the Sky by Kelly Quindlen, Blanca and Roja by Anna-Marie McLemore, and Archenemies by Marissa Meyer. Nate: Parker Inheritance by Varian Johnson, Check, Please by Ngozi Ukazi, and the film Captain Ron (really?) Kim: Silver Spoon by Hiromu Arakawa, Monstress Vol. 3 by Marjorie Liu, My Brother's Husband by Gengorah Tagame, #NotYourPrincess (edited) by Charleyboy, The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy by Mackenzi Lee, Laid-back Camp by Afro, and Crush by Svetlana Chmakova Molly: The Photogrpaher by Didier Lefèvre, Emmanuel Guibert, and Frédéric Lemercier, The Damkeeper by Robert Kondo and Dice Tsutsumi, Witchboy by Molly Ostertag, My Brother's Husband by Gengorah Tagame, The 57 Bus by Dashka Slater, My Hearbeat by Garret Freyman-Weyr, Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma, What if it's Us by Becky Albertali and Adam Silvera, His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman. Cash Money: Dopesick by Beth Macy. Television shows: Curious Creations of Christine McConnell, American Gods, Killing Eve, Brooklyn 99, Superstore, The Good Place, Big Mouth, Billions, Adam Ruins Everything, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Sharp Objects, Nanette by Hannah Gadsby, CNN's 70s, 80s, and 90s documentaries, To All The Boys I've Loved Before, Brainchild. Podcasts: Binge Mode, Ologies. YouTube Channels: New Rock Stars. Instagram Celebrities: Celeste Barber and Donte Colley. Bands: Blood Orange and The Wiggles. Nathan: Less by Andrew Sean Greer, Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse, the podcast Shelf-Involved.
In what turned out to be a surprisingly contentious discussion (our panel is passionately divided), we discuss Amy Spalding's The Summer of Jordi Perez (and the Best Burger in Los Angeles). Molly suggests Boy Meets Boy by David Levithan. Kim suggests To All The Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han and The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner. Amy mentions When Dimple Met Rishi as a potential readalike (before we talk readalikes). Lindsey suggests Strangers in Paradise by Terry Moore. Cash Money suggests the movie Sarah Burgess is a Big Loser. Nathan mentions Pink by Lili Wikerson but vacillates on whether it is a good readalike or not.
This one is pretty loose, gang(complete with a spaced out Nathan and some cool interruptions from children—mostly relegated to easter egg status). We do manage something resembling a discussion Becky Albertali's Leah on the Offbeat. Nate suggests To All the Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han and Noggin by John Corey Whaley. Lindsey suggests The Summer of Jordi Perez (and the Best Burger in Los Angeles) by Amy Spalding. Cash Money and Amy suggest The Apocalypse of Elena Mendoza by Shaun David Hutchinson.

Episode 12 opens with a lot of joy and happiness because The Summer of Jordi Perez (and the best burger in LA) by Amy Spalding is a joy from beginning to end. My YA reading group read it for May, and I loved being able to spend some quiet time with it before I spent chatting time with my friends. This is a lovely book about a girl who is a plus size fashion blogger and apt to crushes on inaccessible girls, until she starts her summer internship and meets the girl of her dreams, who is also her competition. Oops! And then the next book just flummoxed me. Just flummoxed. It's brilliant. Check out www. twitter.com/potentcastpod for more information and links to the books!

The New Guy and Other Senior Year Distractions (Poppy Books) Senior-class competitions and hunky heartthrobs meet in this hilarious high school story, narrated by a hilariously relatable girl, who exemplifies what it’s like to be a high schooler today. Neurotic over-achiever Jules McCallister Morgan has her senior year all planned out: get into Brown, keep up her community service hours and become the editor of her prestigious high school’s newspaper. But on only her second day, the new guy at school and boy band sensation, Alex Powell, puts a damper on her plan for perfection by asking her out. Just as Jules comes around to the idea of having a boyfriend, Alex commits the ultimate betrayal when he joins the school’s TV news show that’s putting her paper out of business. Amid cutthroat competition and schedule overload, Jules must decide what’s more important – college applications or first love. The New Guy (And Other Senior Year Distractions) encapsulates what it’s like to be a teenage girl today, from first loves to final exams and everything in between. Ink Is Thicker Than Water (Entangled Publishing) One of Skylight Books' favorite YA authors returns with a novel about the lengths we go to find out who we are. For Kellie Brooks, family has always been a tough word to define. Combine her hippie mom and tattooist stepdad, her adopted overachieving sister, her younger half brother, and her tough-love dad, and average Kellie's the one stuck in the middle, overlooked and impermanent. When Kellie's sister finally meets her birth mother and her best friend starts hanging with a cooler crowd, the feeling only grows stronger. But then she reconnects with Oliver, the sweet and sensitive college guy she had a near hookup with last year. Oliver is intense and attractive, and she's sure he's totally out of her league. But as she discovers that maybe intensity isn't always a good thing, it's yet another relationship she feels is spiraling out of her control. It'll take a new role on the school newspaper and a new job at her mom's tattoo shop for Kellie to realize that defining herself both outside and within her family is what can finally allow her to feel permanent, just like a tattoo. Amy Spalding grew up outside of St. Louis. She now lives in Los Angeles with two cats and a dog. She works in marketing and does a lot of improv. She has more tattoos than she can count. Amy would love for you to visit her online at www.theamyspalding.com or on Twitter @theames.
