On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by frenemy and recurring guest Joe From Queens to discuss several Buffalo Bills topics, including what players could be in line to potentially receive big paydays. Training camp and the preseason are over for the Bills and we'll be getting a good idea of what their final roster looks like over the next 24 hours. There's also a chance that a player or two may end getting an extension before the regular season starts. The guys discuss a few of those candidates as well as a few others who haven't shown enough to warrant a huge pay day quite yet but could quickly find themselves near the front of the line if they play well this year. They also debut a couple of new segments for when Joe is on, including the "Mt. Flushmore" where Joe lists the four worst or something---this time Buffalo Bills head coaches in addition to a "start, sit and cut" exercise, this week featuring supporting characters from The Sopranos. Patrick also has a few stories from his family reunion in New Jersey last weekend that was long overdue plus a little Yankees talk, traffic is insane in NYC/NJ and more. ♦♦♦♦♦ Follow Patrick Moran/Talking Buffalo Podcast Substack: Patrick Moran's Substack Twitter: @PatrickMoranTB Facebook: Talking Buffalo Podcast YouTube: Talking Buffalo Podcast YouTube Channel Learn more about your ad choices. Rundown - Trisha Calvarese - 15:43 Troubadour Dave Gunders - 01:13:30 "Sugar Don't Call" by Dave Gunders - 01:32:49 Meet Trish Calvarese, the dynamic Democratic candidate who intends to defeat Greg Lopez on June 25, 2024, in a Special Election caused by Representative Ken Buck's resignation. Learn how Calvarese gained the nomination, spurred to run by the wish of her dying father, a lifelong Republican. Colorado CD3 Rep. Lauren Boebert wants to switch to a more MAGA-friendly area and she's targeting CD4. In the meantime, Boebert needs to find a MAGA-approved GOP placeholder and that Republican nominee will be former Parker, Colorado Mayor Greg Lopez. On June 25, 2024, expect the nation to be riveted to the open seat contest between Calvarese and Lopez. Trish Calvarese is a Colorado native who grew up in various cities within Colorado's vast CD4. Her beloved late Dad, Joe Calvarese, was the City Prosecutor for Sterling and went on to serve in the US Civil Service as an SEC Compliance attorney. Trisha went to Highlands Ranch High School, where she was an academic standout and earned a scholarship to Johns Hopkins University. After college and during 2008-09, this millennial decided she wanted to work in the US Senate. She found herself a communications gig in the Capitol with Senator Bernie Sanders. Look forward to hearing her Bernie impression. Or is it an imitation of Larry David doing Bernie? Either way, Trisha Calvarese is entertaining. https://www.trisha4colorado.com/ Trish Calvarese went on to work for the AFL-CIO in Washington, D.C., including as a speechwriter for the late great Richard Trumka. Fate brought her back to Colorado after her parents passed away and she and her husband took on new responsibilities regarding this country we love. Lauren Boebert keeps getting overserved at Beetlejuice shows in Denver and Trump dinners in NYC and Mar-A-Lago. Trisha Calvarese can get the votes of regular Republicans and Unaffiliated voters with her common sense policies and lack of a criminal record. Greg Lopez is a known commodity. Clips are played from @9News (Kyle Clark), Channel 7 and KNUS when Lopez stood in the way of Colorado's Red Flag Law. Lauren Boebert and her placeholder Greg Lopez do the bidding of the gun industry and MAGA. Lopez/Boebert extremism extends to restricting all abortions, including in cases of rape and incest. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1nbrwBLYMM Size up the intelligence of Calvarese who discusses the multitude of challenges posed by artificial intelligence. She's worried about democracy if MAGA prevails, and she's determined to defeat Lopez/Boebert. Colorado voters generally disfavor carpetbaggers and grifters. Calvarese strongly supports IVF procedures. As a millennial married woman, she may need those reproductive rights options now threatened by MAGA judges and lawmakers. As for Russia v. Ukraine, Calvarese is resolute in supporting Ukraine, in sharp contrast to what Putin/Trump/Boebert and MAGA-GOQP want. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XoI_LFqsNqw Trisha Calvarese wants America to outcompete China. She's got big ideas for Colorado's fourth CD. Show Troubadour Dave Gunders proves once again why he's a musical genius and a great conversationalist. His opening lines of "Sugar Don't Call" work for the coming Eclipse, the NYC/NJ earthquake and the 400 calls in one day Lauren Boebert claims to make to an unquestioning Dan Caplis. One-half of the old Caplis and Silverman show, Dan Caplis, is now taking credit for the Caplis Plan to ensure the MAGA-approved Lauren Boebert prevails in a GOP primary while a placeholder (Greg Lopez) keeps the reliably Republican seat warm. Caplis keeps Boebert warm in another gushing interview and we have sound highlights. John Charles Eastman is a soon-to-be-disbarred lawyer with Colorado ties through CU, Colorado Republican Party State Committeeman and attorney/radio host, Randy Corporon. There was a Big Lie spat involving Eastman, Corporon and Denver radio host, Peter Boyles. Boyles now blames Eastman and Corporon for Big Lie and big threats. Corporon and Eastman dismiss all charges. We've got the sound and smart analysis. Hat tip to Allison Gill and Pete Strzok from Cleanup on Aisle 45. https://statesuniteddemocracy.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Eastman-Decision.pdf

Social Justice, catholic school uniforms, horror films, and a scrappy midwestern je ne sais quoi all inform the style and approach of Elijah Justice. He's a rhythm skater and designer residing in Brooklyn, but his home state of Ohio has his heart. His foray into skating like many of us began in family-fun style rinks, but when he found himself at United Skates in Wyckliffe, Ohio he caught sight of the real deal and there was no turning back, he was hooked. In this conversation he opens up about what drives him as a skater, creator, and most importantly a member of the wider rink skating community. Elijah's skating is without a doubt a love letter to the swagger-fueled Cleveland style, and in gratitude for all that the OGs and new school skaters of the region have given him, he finds himself driven to give back especially to the youth. He's also found his place in the NYC/NJ skate scene, making friends galore all while unapologetically challenging the status quo with his emphatic skate style. In this conversation he reveals himself as someone who makes moves of purpose, and while he may be known for shaking things up, he doesn't shy away from having difficult conversations that are led by love and commonality. In our exchange he brings into focus how his design work and skate life intersect. A unifying theme is his punk sensibility, which shows up in the messaging of his eponymous apparel line, and similarly in the way he challenges inequity and discrimination in community. Whether signifying through clothing and graphics or his words he gets the message across! We also get into all the fun opportunities roller skating has brought into his life, the importance of keeping ALL regional skate styles alive, and the specific ways he's giving back to young people in the realms of design and skating. This conversation is equal parts vulnerability and unwavering confidence, and you really shouldn't miss it!Check out Elijah's apparel line : https://www.elijahjustice.com/Follow Elijah on IG: https://www.instagram.com/elijahjusticeDive deep with Elijah's playlist featuring Cleveland rink essentials: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2xlJMpSd0t6G49sVpdfJgRKeep up with the Cleveland skate crews Elijah shouts out in the interview: @sk8life_crew@topflightclass@elitesquad09@team.homicide_ @dipgirlzcrew@stormch8sers@freaksquadcrew@f5skatecrew@style.bendersSupport Skaterade! From Coma To Catharsis is the second full exploratory mission in the current five-piece incarnation of NYC/NJ-based instrumental ensemble, The Royal Arctic Institute. It's the sequel to last year's From Catnap To Coma, and like its predecessor, the new mini-album was recorded and produced by James McNew (Yo La Tengo) in the historic Neumann Leather Factory in Hoboken, New Jersey. From Coma To Catharsis is being released February 4th, 2023 by Already Dead Tapes and Records and will be available on cassette (duh!), as a paid download, and on streaming platforms. Later in the year, the band hopes to release both titles on vinyl. At present, The Royal Arctic Institute comprises five musicians who have played extensively with other groups and/or as backing/session musicians: drummer Lyle Hysen (Das Damen, Arthur Lee, The Misguided), guitarists John Leon (Roky Erickson, Summer Wardrobe, Abra Moore) and Lynn Wright (And The Wiremen, Bee And Flower, Shilpa Ray), bassist David Motamed (Das Damen, Two Dollar Guitar, Arthur Lee, Townes Van Zandt), and keyboardist Carl Baggaley (Headbrain, Gramercy Arms). What are the first things you would feel coming out of a coma? Would it be cathartic, a full release of all your emotions? What would that sound like? From Coma To Catharsis tries to capture that auditory experience replacing the steadfast emotions expressed on From Catnap to Coma with the sounds of dreaming, then awakenings. All the pieces were created communally, deconstructing then reconstructing material mainly composed by guitarist John Leon with a couple written by other band members. McNew recorded the band in a live setting with no digital magic and minimal overdubs except for pedal steel work by John. This record also highlights the band's musical development after a further year of playing together. This includes songwriting contributions by Dave (“Angleman's Lament”), and Lynn (“The Elated World”) as well as more input from Carl. “This is the third record I've played on,” explains Baggaley, “and on this one we really broke the songs down to the bones. I was able to bring in new influences like King Crimson-style mellotron and electric piano inspired by the late Billy Preston performances during the recording of the Beatles' Let It Be album.” Besotted by 2021's Beatles documentary series stemming from those sessions, Lyle draped his drums in tea- towels ala Ringo for the song “Passover Bucket.” Regarding that same title, John says, “During the COVID lockdown, everyone's kids were home and parents were scrambling and grasping at straws to entertain them. A Jewish friend of mine decided to celebrate Easter with her children to give them something to do. They were fascinated by the concept of Easter baskets. The following year, instead of Easter baskets, the children were given Passover Buckets to keep them quiet.” From Coma To Catharsis is, sadly, guitarist Lynn Wright's last work with the band as a full member as he's recently relocated to Berlin to further his career in music and fine dining. The band will continue to play shows and record with Lynn when possible, but perhaps as the past two years have shown us, who knows if everything will be cathartic, or just a return to a coma. We have a great show. We are meeting with Adenah Bayoh, co-founder of Cornbread Farm to Soul? Founded in 2017 by Co-Founders Adenah Bayoh and Elzadie “Zadie” Smith, Cornbread specializes in mouthwatering, soul food creations such as baked mac & cheese, collard greens, yams, chicken, signature cornbread, and other specialty menu items. Cornbread is based in New Jersey and has three open locations in the NYC/NJ area. As Bayo and Smith set out to open their fast-casual restaurant business, they set their hearts on soul food. Soul food is a category of food that has the power to bring people together and lacks representation in most communities and within the franchise industry. The duo now aims to distinguish and establish its franchise system through Cornbread's unique company goals, values, and promise to continually service residents in communities where they operate and help more women and minorities become successful franchisees. We play a clip from our popular Great Quotes in Franchising podcast in Part Two.
If you're struggling with thyroid issues, I advise you to listen to this podcast. Anytime we experience stress, our HPA and the sympathetic nervous system turn on. As a result, we release cortisol, adrenaline, and glucocorticoids. Following exposure to stress, elevated levels of circulating glucocorticoids inhibit HPA activity at the level of the hypothalamus and pituitary. The effect of glucocorticoids on TSH secretion is likely through inhibition of TRH in the hypothalamus. This means that the more stressed you are, the more you will have issues with both adrenals and thyroid. In this podcast, I share How stress creates issues with the adrenals and thyroid. I also share steps you can take today to control stress which will help you with adrenal and thyroid issues! In this Nomad Futurist podcast, Bill Skinner, Operations Services Manager at Bloomberg LP, shares a dynamic journey highlighted by a commitment to constant learning in the critical infrastructure space — a path that has led him to operationalize training programs at Bloomberg and serve as a data center evangelist within the tech community through his position as President of the NYC/NJ metro chapter of AFCOM. Skinner had a natural proclivity for tech from an early age. His first computer was a Tandy 500 which he tinkered with, broke, reassembled and improved. In high school he excelled at computers, studying programming languages and software development as well as electronics. “My dad said, ‘you're going into computers.'” After graduating college with an IT degree and despite the dot-com crash, he managed to get hired by Sun Microsystems supporting Bloomberg financial. He hit the ground running. At Sun he received intensive training in data center engineering, learning about hardware, and working on what at the time were supercomputers. “Where I really learned was on the job. I've always been able to jump in and learn new things.” Skinner talks about his career evolution, how he gradually became aware of the myriad elements that make up the data center environment: the servers, the racks, the power, the batteries, the cooling. He moved into middle management in Bloomberg's New York City data center and was tasked with transforming the siloed work culture. He asked workers to expand their remit and found that those that met the challenge excelled. “My passion is leadership at this point…really growing people and helping them succeed, growing the department.” Skinner talks about the importance of having ongoing conversations with technology vendors to stay ahead of the curve, ensuring that the right questions are being considered and the right issues addressed. “You go out there and ask what's coming? What should we be learning? What should we be addressing? Never hire for what you need today, hire for what you need tomorrow.” He also highlights the importance of continuous training and how that has been incorporated as an ongoing process at his company where they have instituted weekly internal seminars to challenge their employees and help teams grow. Skinner also talks about his leadership involvement with AFCOM where he was instrumental in revitalizing the NYC/NJ metro chapter after superstorm Sandy flooded and disrupted much of lower Manhattan. As a strong believer in the power of collaboration and community, Skinner's focus for the organization stressed and continues to encourage education, networking, and the pooling of information. “Let's see how you're doing it. Are we doing it differently? Are you doing it better? Let's compare notes so this will help everyone!” Bill Skinner has twenty years of experience in the Data Center and Technology Infrastructure environment and is currently Operations Services Manager for Bloomberg LP, managing a range of teams responsible for automating infrastructure services for the company's extensive engineering/developer community. During his 17-year tenure at Bloomberg, Skinner has managed data center facilities, developed new standards, processes, and technologies, and built and enabled highly successful IT teams. Bill Skinner is a frequent speaker at industry events and is the President of the NY/NJ Chapter of AFCOM. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology from Plymouth State University.
