It's all about taking your beauty into your hands “because you're worth it”.  Sounds familiar? You might have by now guessed who we're speaking to for today's discussion  – yes, it is indeed personal care and cosmetics giant L'Oreal.  On that note – did you know that the tagline was coined in 1971 by a 23-year-old female copywriter at a Manhattan ad agency McCann.  But taglines and branding aside, L'Oreal positions itself as a leader of the beauty tech world, with the century-old firm boasting a workforce of 86,000 employees across 150 countries,  The company has a portfolio of 36 international brands split into four divisions, namely (1) Luxe, (2) Consumer Products, (3) Dermatological Beauty and (4) Professional Products.  Some of the brands include Kiehl's Lancome, Ralph Lauren, Biotherm, Shu Uemura, Urban Decay, L'Oreal Paris, Prada Beauty, Garnier and Maybelline New York.  At a global level, L'Oreal had in April this year reported a 9.4 per cent increase in Q1 sales on a like-for-like basis, exceeding analysts' expectations.  Sales for the quarter came in at 11.24 billion euros or US$11.98 billion for the three months to March, easing concerns over an economic slowdown in the world's two largest economies of the US and China. But how far did Singapore contribute to the numbers? The latest showing also comes as the firm's mass market range and dermatological products compensated for weakness in the luxury segment. But how far is this the case in Singapore, and what does the current economic uncertainty mean for the firm's push into the luxury sector? Meanwhile, L'Oreal had announced a number of agreements with institutions in Singapore to develop youth-led innovation. But what can we expect on this front? On Under the Radar, The Evening Runway's finance presenter Chua Tian Tian posed these questions to Tomas Hruska, Managing Director of L'Oréal Singapore and Malaysia.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

With over thirty years' experience working in the beauty sector – no one quite understands the industry like Millie Kendall MBE. From sales assistant to brand owner, junior to CEO, Millie has seen it all. When she founded the British Beauty Council in 2018, which aimed to represent the voices, opinions and needs of the industry, she has no idea just how important it would become during the pandemic. Today she reveals how her tenacity and passion has taken her to number 10 and how she already has the next fight on her hands… Brought to you by Timely Business Management Software KEY TAKEAWAYS Empowering people is crucial. We need to give underrepresented people a voice and encourage them to speak out. Only by doing this can we change the world for the better. The beauty sector is one in which you get out what you put in. You can earn what you like, work with who you like, and build the career of your dreams, so long as you have vision and tenacity. There is an overabundance of new launches that seem to be perpetual these days. The over-saturation of launches now has led to a dulling of the excitement VALUABLE RESOURCES This episode of the Power of Makeup podcast was brought to you by Timely Business Management Software. Timely - https://bit.ly/3l3IFpW   ABOUT THE GUEST Millie Kendall CEO of the British Beauty Council, retail maven and brand creator, Millie Kendall has been instrumental in the success of cult brands including Shu Uemura, Aveda, Tweezerman, L'Occitane and Ruby & Millie. Having worked with the UK's leading retailers, Millie has been creating and marketing beauty brands for the past 30 year's. Millie was awarded an MBE in 2007 for her services to the cosmetic industry, and an OBE in 2022 for services to the hair and beauty industry. In 1990, Millie met Ruby Hammer and launched Ruby & Millie in 1998. This was the first mid priced make-up brand to cut across existing price and brand perception barriers, launching first in Harvey Nichols then Selfridges and simultaneously going on to retail successfully in Boots. Today, this remains a modern retail growth strategy but for the 90's it was a completely unique concept. Millie has also collaborated with beauty journalists and Vogue beauty editor Anna-Marie Solowj to launch concepts like BeautyMART. A ground breaking approach to beauty retail that was born from the realisation that retail methods hadn't changed in decades, despite consumers shopping very differently with increasing globalisation and the advent of online, BeautyMART became a disruptive and ground-breaking approach to beauty retail - the first beauty boutique in store and online, curated by an editor, featuring a mix of multi priced, globally- sourced products that offered a more democratic choice for the customer. BeautyMART paved the way for this new retail approach now emulated across the globe. In 2015 alongside Solowij, Millie Kendall launched the PR company Brandstand Communications bringing in partner Andrew Perera, former VP of communications for M.A.C. and PZ Cussons, a couple of years later to run the business. The PR business offers a selective array of services – from business planning and strategy to retail launch, PR and marketing. Then in 2018 Millie Kendall, Anna-Marie Solowij and Kate Shapland (former Telegraph beauty director) founded the British Beauty Council, a non-profit organisation that aims to support a successful, innovative, and inclusive British beauty industry. “THE BRITISH BEAUTY COUNCIL REPRESENTS THE VOICES, OPINIONS AND NEEDS OF THE BRITISH BEAUTY INDUSTRY” The British Beauty Council was founded to represent the voices, opinions and needs of the British beauty industry – from hairdressing to cosmetics, cosmetic surgery, therapy and spa; in education and training; and from formulation to manufacture, supply, logistics packaging, design, retail and media. "We are a not-for-profit, inclusive organisation that works to engage politicians and business leaders about the value of British beauty to the national economy, and its key role in the UK's creative and cultural character. Our ambition is to ensure that the beauty industry is recognised and valued at all levels of government, throughout the wider economy and by consumers." milliekendall.com  britishbeautycouncil.com  brandstandcomms.com ABOUT THE HOST Born in Ireland from a Vietnamese origin Lan has become an established name in the fashion and beauty industry. Gina Brooke is an American beauty expert/makeup artist who is recognized as one of the leading talents in the world of beauty. She is known as the creative force behind some of the most memorable beauty trends and the development of numerous award-winning beauty products. Her vision and beauty philosophy is evident in the groundbreaking products she has developed as Artistic Director and Global Beauty Consultant for leading cosmetic companies.  Brooke’s dynamic approach to beauty and emphasis on “individuality” quickly attracted the attention of pop icon Madonna in 2003 – lead to over a decade of creative collaboration from countless editorials, album covers, red carpets, to video/film, media events, and five world tours. In 2004, L’Oreal commissioned Brooke as the Artist Director to the renowned makeup and skincare brand, Shu Uemura where she hand created lashes that revitalized the false eyelash industry that included the now-iconic diamond lashes which set a record-breaking $10,000 per pair that sold out. It was that kind of bold, ingenuity that led Gina to continuously re-invent her talents and artistry that in return, reinvent the looks of her clients. Additionally, Gina has always been a long time advocate for healthy skincare. Gina’s philosophy: “The foundation to beautiful makeup begins with the skin,” led her to years of researching innovative skincare products and becoming an expert at crafting gorgeous, natural, radiant skin on her clients by paring her skincare techniques with her makeup skills. This would eventually lead Gina to the Australian skincare brand ‘Intraceuticals’ where she has served as Global Brand Ambassador from 2010 to the present— putting their famous oxygen skin treatments on the map in Hollywood. In addition to that snapshot of Gina’s incredible career accolades, I want t to add some personal thoughts here on WHO Gina is to me, and HOW she has played a major role in my life. I met Gina when I moved back to LA after living in NYC for years and Hawaii before that. We met while working on a makeup event in San Fransico that Shu Umera was hosting—I was so excited to meet her, as the Artistic Director of the brand and the creator of all the beautiful, iconic makeup looks Madonna was seen in those days—the most perfect cat eyeliner and skin hands down. I’ll leave the details of this for you in this EP but what’s important for me to express in this intro that will live here forever, is that meeting Gina, becoming dear friends and having the opportunity to learn from her not just in how to perform on the highest level in this career of makeup artistry—but how to operate from a deep sense of integrity as an artist and an entrepreneur. She is one of the most generous humans know. Where most would hold back in supporting up and comers like I was at the time of meeting; Gina did not. She opened doors for me, shared timeless and valuable insights that have stuck with me throughout my makeup career as well and in my life. I love this woman dearly, I know you will LOVE her too once you take in this incredible episode that is filled with resilience fortitude courage passion perseverance empowerment inspiration and the beautiful, classic, sexy essence that is my girl Gina Brooke. First up, some housekeeping notes! Don’t forget to weigh in for our listener survey. By completing the survey, you'll automatically be entered to win a huge skincare prize from our friends @theinkeylist, valued at more than $200 - one lucky person will win 19 products! We’re accepting entries until May 22.   To kick off the episode, we share some recent conversations we’ve had with some amazing women. We appeared on Clean Beauty Insiders podcast, based in the UK where we chat about entrepreneurship and our favourite behind-the-scenes moments with founders. Plus, we got local love from fellow Torontonian podcaster Siffat Haider on the Dream Bigger Podcast - where we dish *tons* of product faves. Speaking of shopping, Carlene couldn’t leave Japan without a beauty haul so in today’s episode, we have your ultimate guide to J-Beauty shopping, aka Japanese Beauty!! What is J-Beauty, you ask? While K-Beauty trends may get all of the sexy headlines, the truth is that beauty insiders have long known that the most high-quality, smartly designed and effective products are born and bred in Japan (think backstage at fashion week with artists putting Shu Uemura lash curlers on the map).  So what really sets J-Beauty products apart? Carlene links up with her new beauty pal and Tokyo native Shiho Kobayashi to find out just that, and Shiho takes her on a field trip to Don Quijote where Carlene fills her cart with weird and wonderful essentials. Check out our our Amazon Storefront to snag them for yourself (and please note those are affiliate links). Stay tuned to the very end of the episode to hear Jill and Carlene reviews - is it a J-Beauty must or J-Beauty bust?   *Disclaimer: Unless otherwise stated, all products reviewed are gratis media samples submitted for editorial consideration.*   Hosts: Carlene Higgins and Jill Dunn Theme song, used with permission: Cherry Bomb by Saya

Shout, Sleep and Share! What a weird combination of ways to fight stress from our guest, Millie Kendall. In today’s episode of Serial Stress Killer Podcast, Chris Hatchett chats with Millie about how she copes with stress inside her business and her personal life. Millie Kendall is the Co-Founder and Marketing Director of BeautyMART, and the CEO of The British Beauty Council. Ever since she has been changing the public’s negative perception of the beauty industry. She says stress can happen in building and growing a business. But, instead of just waiting for stress to happen and finding solutions to unload yourself of it, Millie advises that you do everything to avoid stress beforehand by sticking to your visions and maintaining healthy habits. Find out also how important is sleep and morning routines are for Millie. KEY TAKEAWAYS Millie says that she copes with stress by her own stress cocktail of 3 S’s - shouting a lot, sleeping a lot, and sharing (talking) a lot. Sleep is the most important thing for her. The different kinds of stress Millie encounter in her business: “There’s a stress of losing control and not being able to be in charge of my own destiny, of my own business, of my own brand, of my own company, and the people that work with me. And there’s the stress of starting something new – laying the bricks and not knowing what’s gonna happen next.” You can start a business without being stressful. Millie advises to be clear about the vision but you have to be flexible with the path you’re going. Stick to your routines. When you’re out of sync or small changes happen, you get stressed. Millie values her morning routine so much. The beauty industry is still yet to be respected and recognized they contribute big to the economy. Millie wants a ‘makeover’ for it and builds its well-deserved reputation. One of the stresses that could be brought by social media is the threat to cybersecurity. Many people put too much information out on the web so they should know the limits. When something needs to be done, commit to it. Millie finds it stressful afterwards if she happens to flake. BEST MOMENTS "I don't stress about big stuff because I can't really control it." “As long as you got a firm goal, you might not get there in the way you think you do but you will get there.” “I think a lack of control… I think that’s probably one of the most stressful things… not owning your own space and not being able to protect yourself.” VALUABLE RESOURCES BeautyMART The British Beauty Council ABOUT THE HOST After many years of dealing (badly) with personal stress for over 20 years, Chris Hackett is on a mission to help people understand and overcome stress and anxiety by tackling the problem head-on. “Stress is the enemy and you are the killer.” ABOUT THE GUEST (MILLIE KENDALL) Millie Kendall MBE is one of the most influential figureheads in the UK cosmetic industry. Millie is the expert who launched Shu Uemura to the European Market in the 1990’s and also launched the Aveda brand in 1997. She then co-founded the cosmetic brand ‘Ruby & Millie’ with makeup artist Ruby Hammer which was the first UK cosmetic brand to be launched in 30 years. In 2007, Millie was awarded an MBE for her long-standing contribution to the cosmetics industry. Millie’s current venture is BeautyMart, the beauty retail brand she co-founded back in 2012 with renowned beauty journalist Anna-Marie Solowij and is very much an active voice for the UK beauty industry through the work she does with the British Beauty Council.
