Joining Lefty this episode to talk about gas operated short stroke shotguns is Mike Whitesides and Lan Nguyen with Dissident Arms and Andrew with Century Arms. The first known AK style shotgun to be made was the Saiga-12 (based off the AK-47/AKM). Production started in 1997 by the Izhmash factory in Russia and then ,6 years later, by the Molot factory with their VEPR-12 shotgun (based of the RPK light machine gun). Relatively speaking, the AK Shotgun is a new firearm and the future is bright. Having a gas operated short stroke action gives the AK shogun advantages over your traditional inertia driven shotguns like the Benelli M4 . Less recoil and faster loading times are a couple that are discussed. However because Lan and Mike have such an deep grasp of these type of shotguns by converting and modifying hundreds of Saiga and Vepr-12 shotguns over the years they give us a unique and detailed breakdown on AK shotguns. Plus we make a big announcement for the next episode, the season 4 finale, of the AK KORNER. With over thirty years' experience working in the beauty sector – no one quite understands the industry like Millie Kendall MBE. From sales assistant to brand owner, junior to CEO, Millie has seen it all. When she founded the British Beauty Council in 2018, which aimed to represent the voices, opinions and needs of the industry, she has no idea just how important it would become during the pandemic. Today she reveals how her tenacity and passion has taken her to number 10 and how she already has the next fight on her hands… Brought to you by Timely Business Management Software KEY TAKEAWAYS Empowering people is crucial. We need to give underrepresented people a voice and encourage them to speak out. Only by doing this can we change the world for the better. The beauty sector is one in which you get out what you put in. You can earn what you like, work with who you like, and build the career of your dreams, so long as you have vision and tenacity. There is an overabundance of new launches that seem to be perpetual these days. The over-saturation of launches now has led to a dulling of the excitement VALUABLE RESOURCES This episode of the Power of Makeup podcast was brought to you by Timely Business Management Software. Timely - https://bit.ly/3l3IFpW ABOUT THE GUEST Millie Kendall CEO of the British Beauty Council, retail maven and brand creator, Millie Kendall has been instrumental in the success of cult brands including Shu Uemura, Aveda, Tweezerman, L'Occitane and Ruby & Millie. Having worked with the UK's leading retailers, Millie has been creating and marketing beauty brands for the past 30 year's. Millie was awarded an MBE in 2007 for her services to the cosmetic industry, and an OBE in 2022 for services to the hair and beauty industry. In 1990, Millie met Ruby Hammer and launched Ruby & Millie in 1998. This was the first mid priced make-up brand to cut across existing price and brand perception barriers, launching first in Harvey Nichols then Selfridges and simultaneously going on to retail successfully in Boots. Today, this remains a modern retail growth strategy but for the 90's it was a completely unique concept. Millie has also collaborated with beauty journalists and Vogue beauty editor Anna-Marie Solowj to launch concepts like BeautyMART. A ground breaking approach to beauty retail that was born from the realisation that retail methods hadn't changed in decades, despite consumers shopping very differently with increasing globalisation and the advent of online, BeautyMART became a disruptive and ground-breaking approach to beauty retail - the first beauty boutique in store and online, curated by an editor, featuring a mix of multi priced, globally- sourced products that offered a more democratic choice for the customer. BeautyMART paved the way for this new retail approach now emulated across the globe. In 2015 alongside Solowij, Millie Kendall launched the PR company Brandstand Communications bringing in partner Andrew Perera, former VP of communications for M.A.C. and PZ Cussons, a couple of years later to run the business. The PR business offers a selective array of services – from business planning and strategy to retail launch, PR and marketing. Then in 2018 Millie Kendall, Anna-Marie Solowij and Kate Shapland (former Telegraph beauty director) founded the British Beauty Council, a non-profit organisation that aims to support a successful, innovative, and inclusive British beauty industry. “THE BRITISH BEAUTY COUNCIL REPRESENTS THE VOICES, OPINIONS AND NEEDS OF THE BRITISH BEAUTY INDUSTRY” The British Beauty Council was founded to represent the voices, opinions and needs of the British beauty industry – from hairdressing to cosmetics, cosmetic surgery, therapy and spa; in education and training; and from formulation to manufacture, supply, logistics packaging, design, retail and media. "We are a not-for-profit, inclusive organisation that works to engage politicians and business leaders about the value of British beauty to the national economy, and its key role in the UK's creative and cultural character. Our ambition is to ensure that the beauty industry is recognised and valued at all levels of government, throughout the wider economy and by consumers." milliekendall.com britishbeautycouncil.com brandstandcomms.com ABOUT THE HOST Born in Ireland from a Vietnamese origin Lan has become an established name in the fashion and beauty industry. Leading London-based photographer Jack Eames has worked with some of the leading brands, celebrities and magazine in the world, yet it's been working on the Haircuts For Homeless project that has had the greatest impact on his life and his approach to photography Brought to you by Timely Business Management Software KEY TAKEAWAYS In the beauty industry, nothing comes easy. You have to put in the hard work, which in turn promotes respect and encourages discipline. As an assistant to one of the world's leading – and most famous make-up artists – Pat McGrath, Cathyanne has worked with the very best in industry. Grateful for all the opportunities she has been given, she discusses how she now wants to use her years of knowledge to educate, promote and teach valuable skills to up and coming makeup artists. Brought to you by Timely Business Management Software KEY TAKEAWAYS Education is vitally important to honing our craft, as it instils a sense of discipline into what we do. Those who teach become truly great if the students' desire to learn remains strong. There are no such things as mistakes, especially in our careers. There are only lessons. The more lessons we learn, the better we get. Every generation provides its own sets of disciplines and pursuits. We are currently living through the social media generation, which allows an instant connection between artist and audience. When you are brought up with issues that don't affect anyone else, it forces you to work harder. it also allows you to gain a stronger insight into what makes things work. When anyone puts their art into the world, you simply have to be brave and develop a thick skin very fast. Not everyone will love what you do, and you need to accept that. If you are trying to get into a creative industry and you have some kind of deficiency, then remember that the more you work with an issue, the easier it becomes to adopt into your work. As a trailblazer for cruelty-free, vegan products celebrity make-up artist Justine Jenkins has been one of the major forces in raising awareness in the cosmetics industry. This passion led to her writing Sustainable Beauty in December 2021 and today she discusses how if you speak your truth and show passion you can have an impact – and find success. Brought to you by Timely Business Management Software KEY TAKEAWAYS A lot of marketing language covers up the truth about the lack of awareness in the beauty industry. Only by raising our voices and making them heard can we get the message out there. When most people think of sustainability, they think of packaging. Packaging is only the tip of the iceberg. We need to ensure that other factors are added, including living wages to employees and waste management. Sometimes the fear of failing can hold us back from our dreams. However, we must balance this fear withe the fear of never trying at all. VALUABLE RESOURCES This episode of the Power of Makeup podcast was brought to you by Timely Business Management Software. With a career spanning nearly three decades, Caroline Barnes is a well-respected make-up artist who has navigated her career through multiple industry changes, motherhood, the new era of social media and a pandemic to remain one of the leading voices. Today she discusses with Lan how having integrity is one of the key elements to longevity and her top tips for starting out as a makeup artist. Brought to you by Timely Business Management Software KEY TAKEAWAYS Contracts between artists and brands are not easy to obtain, but if they do connect it can take your work to a global audience. When people try to tell you that success doesn't belong to you, it can fire you up and make you want to prove them wrong. Always use negativity as rocket fuel to push you further. When you're a freelancer, one of the hardest skills to master is separating your emotions from the job you're doing. It takes mental and emotional resilience to remain positive during quieter periods. In order to attain longevity, you need to master the art of thinking ahead and staying organised. Ask questions, remain alert and give it everything you have. VALUABLE RESOURCES This episode of the Power of Makeup podcast was brought to you by Timely Business Management Software. Multi-award winning and world-renowned hairdresser Errol Douglas MBE discusses how he believes hard work and natural flair for styling has been the key to his long term success. Although an ambassador for leading brands, such as Dyson and Living Proof, and former President of the Fellowship for British Hairdressing, Errol explains why his new role with NHS Blood Transplant could be his most important to date. KEY TAKEAWAYS It is not always the case that we choose careers. Sometimes, both in business and life, careers choose us. Sometimes we merely answer the call that comes from inside, and follow our instincts. Setbacks can often act as the ignition switch to push ourselves harder. Challenges are lessons learned, and barriers only make us want to push harder. Sometimes the clothes we wear and looks we adopt act as our armour - our unique identity. Presentation is everything. After so many generations, it is incredible to think that anyone in this world has to fight for their place in it. Equality should be expected, not earned. Iconic milliner, Louis Mariette is known for flamboyant designs and elegant creations. In this episode he discusses how he embraces his love for travel, art and culture in all of his designs - and how the key to happiness is appreciating our privileges and make the most out of them. KEY TAKEAWAYS Those who arrive from outside a culture often have to work harder in order to prove themselves, but this also causes them to work harder and be more dedicated. If you have a dream then you will tend to find that people tell you it isn't possible. Challenge is natural, but we must never feel restrained by the opinions of others. It's always worth taking time to slow down and reflect - to plan and strategise. Visualise what you wan to achieve, and work out the best way to get there. The whole process of putting on a wedding can cause great anxiety and is made up of many different issues to solve. It is essentially a showcase of your tastes and wishes, and so experts such as Louis can help to expedite and realise these dreams. Fascinated with faces from a young age due to her adopted childhood, Phyllis Cohen chats to Lan about how she turned her obsession with facial features and natural flair for creativity, into a passion for make-up and transformation. Although she had no formal training, Phyllis soon became one of the go-to celebrity make-up artist in the 80's, Phyllis painting the likes of David Bowie, Tina Turner and Janet Jackson before struggling with her anxieties and the ever-changing industry. KEY TAKEAWAYS Sometimes we take inspiration not from what see all around us, but from what we do not see around us. In Phyllis's case, her fascination with faces came from being adopted and seeing faces markedly different to her own. Working with make-up is very much learning to paint. First, we need to learn how to see, then we must understand what makes things beautiful about that face. The ones who achieve greatness are the creators and innovators who dedicate themselves to their craft and work hard to gain mastery. There will always be further avenues in which to take the art of make-up. There are realms of possibility ahead for true creators. This week, Lan talks to British fashion disruptor, social campaigner and author of Be Yourself Everyone Else is Taken, Daniel Lismore. Described as "England's Most Eccentric Dresser", Daniel Lismore opens up about his journey from fashion fanatic to world-renowned artist and author. A dedicated social campaigner, Daniel discusses how his belief in spreading kindness has united communities and causes throughout the world. KEY TAKEAWAYS Make up and fashion has the power to change us – to affect each moment of our existence. It empowers us and strengthens us. Fashion thrives and develops through experimentation and the unique minds that dare to create in that space. There is no more nurturing influence in life than the love and support of our family while growing up. It gives us the confidence to find our singular selves. On this episode, I interviewed Dr. Quynh Lan Nguyen, a traveling hospitalist and blogger about how she and her husband have turned credit card hacking into a lifestyle that allows them to travel around the world. We talk about her strategies and recommendations and whether its still possible to do this today. We also talk about her interest in the FIRE movement and how she and her investment banker husband both want to enjoy their life sooner rather than later. I myself was using credit cards, particularly southwest a few years ago to get companion passes for my wife and myself which has allowed our family of 5 to basically travel free (domestically and to Mexico twice) the last 3 years saving us approx 15-20K in airfare costs. It can be extremely useful if used appropriately, but there is risk in spending unwisely, late payments or interest charges which will far outweigh any rewards you accumulate, and negative impact on credit so be aware of this and other risks if you try to do this. I think the credit card companies are catching on making things a bit more difficult now so as Dr. Nguyen recommends, use your miles sooner rather than later. A member of the country’s large Vietnamese community, Mimi Lan Nguyen came to the Czech Republic in the early 1990s while still in her early teens. Today she is a successful fashion designer with a flagship boutique on the capital’s Štěpánská St. The shop is actually on the outside of the grand city centre Lucerna Palace, and it was there that Mimi began introducing me to “her Prague”.

Traditionally, you stop the job hunt during the holidays because employers are wrapped up with parties, gifts and family gatherings. But these are unique times, and taking a break may mean missing out on a full-time position. WalletPop's Lan Nguyen chats with Aaron Crowe, WalletPop editor on careers, and Duncan Mathison, co-author of Unlock the Hidden Job Market, on how to catch an employer's attention during these hectic weeks.
