In this episode, we sit down with Cindy Eckert — the trailblazing founder behind Addyi, the first FDA-approved pill for women's low sexual desire. Cindy shares the raw, behind-the-scenes story of what it took to bring female sexual wellness to the forefront of medicine and culture. From navigating regulatory roadblocks to challenging deep-rooted stigmas, she opens up about the fight to get women's desire taken seriously. We dive into the gender gap in healthcare, why sex is still a taboo topic for women, and how Addyi became more than just a pill — it became a movement. Stay tuned to learn more! ADDYI is for premenopausal women with acquired, generalized hypoactive (low) sexual desire disorder who have not had problems with low sexual desire in the past, and who have low sexual desire no matter the type of sexual activity, the situation or the sexual partner. The low sexual desire is troubling to them and is not due to a medical or mental health problem, problems in the relationship or medicine or other drug use. ADDYI is not for use in men or to enhance sexual performance. Your risk of severe low blood pressure and fainting is increased if you drink 1-2 standard alcoholic drinks close in time to your ADDYI dose. Wait at least 2 hours after drinking before taking ADDYI at bedtime. Your risk of severe low blood pressure and fainting is also increased if you take certain prescription, over the counter or herbal medications, or have liver problems. Low blood pressure and fainting can happen when you take ADDYI even if you don't drink alcohol or take other medicines. Do not take if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in ADDYI. Allergic reactions may include hives, itching or trouble breathing. Sleepiness, sometimes serious, can occur. Common side effects include dizziness, nausea, tiredness, difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep and dry mouth. Sleepiness on psilocybin can stem from both biological and psychological factors, with science pointing to altered brain wave activity and serotonin receptor interactions as key contributors. Research suggests psilocybin induces a paradoxical state of heightened awareness alongside deep relaxation, offering insight into the complex relationship between psychedelics and rest.Explore the curious and often misunderstood phenomenon of sleepiness during a psilocybin-containing mushroom or other psychedelic experience in today's article. We'll break down the different stages in which drowsiness may occur: during the come-up, mid-trip, or afterglow, and offer both scientific and psycho-spiritual perspectives to explain why. Drawing from client experiences and current neuroscience, we examine how psilocybin affects brainwaves, information processing, and the serotonin system, potentially triggering a state of paradoxical relaxation and alertness. Jimmy also delves into the role of trauma, the body's need for rest, and the concept of psychedelics as “non-specific amplifiers” of unconscious material. You can find practical advice for those of us struggling with disruptive sleepiness during micro- or macrodosing, alongside cultural reflections on rest, trauma, and integration. We close the episode by answering a question from a community member on selecting a psychedelic facilitator, emphasizing the importance of resonance and choice in healing journeys. No mushroom source? Listen to today's podcast... According to American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine the accident risk is two to six times higher for those suffering from sleep apnea than it is for regular drivers. Everyday, car crashes are caused by drivers with sleep apnea falling asleep at the wheel. I grew up with people who snored.  I thought that everyone did.  And I thought, like most people, that it was no big deal.  However, people with untreated sleep apnea are more likely to have motor vehicle crashes, hypertension, heart attacks, irregular heartbeat stroke, depression, impotence and diabetes. Do You Think You May Have Sleep Apnea? Are you often very sleepy throughout the day? Do others tell you that you snore or have short pauses in your breathing while you sleep? Are you known to choke, gasp, or hold your breath while asleep? Do you think you get a full night's sleep most nights but still wake up tired? Are you overweight? The Public Health Agency of Canada found that 26%of Canadian adults aged 18 years and older are estimated to be at high risk for having sleep apnea and only 5% of people at high risk have been tested for the condition. Take One Action Today To Build Your #Resiliency!      Tips For Building Resiliency and Celebrating National Sleep Apnea Day and Sleep Awareness Week: If in doubt, get it checked out.  Go to see your doctor and ask for a referral to a sleep clinic. Decrease your risk. You can control your diet and weight, how much you exercise, how you use alcohol and caffeine and whether you smoke.  All of these can lower your risk for sleep apnea. In this episode 1 of a 6-part special series on sleep with Dr. Matthew Walker, Ph.D., professor of neuroscience and psychology and founder of the Center for Human Sleep Science at the University of California, Berkeley, and the author of the book “Why We Sleep” discusses the essential role that sleep plays in our health. We cover how sleep affects our hormones, immune system, learning and memory, mood, appetite, and weight regulation. We also discuss what causes the urge to sleep, how sleep is structured throughout the night, and the biology of the different phases of sleep. We also teach you how to determine your individualized sleep needs, including your chronotype (best waking and to-bed time), tips for combat snoring and insomnia, and your QQRT (Quality, Quantity, Regularity, and Timing)—a key framework for optimizing your sleep and therefore daytime energy and focus, and overall health. The next episode in this special series explores how to improve one's sleep. For show notes, including referenced articles and additional resources, please visit hubermanlab.com. With This Rare Disorder, No Amount Of Sleep Is Enough

Humans need sufficient sleep to function. The conventional wisdom is that we need around 8 hours each night to be at peak performance. But for people with idiopathic hypersomnia, or IH, no amount of sleep can shake a profound feeling of sleepiness. Some can sleep for over 24 hours, despite using stimulants and multiple alarm clocks. Others fall asleep while driving or doing other daily activities.IH is rare. It affects just a small fraction of 1% of people, and the underlying cause is unknown. Now, scientists are doing more research into the condition, thanks in large part to patients organizing and advocating for better treatment options. Unlocking what causes this excessive sleepiness may be key to understanding the bigger picture of how the body enters and wakes from sleep.Ira discusses the science of sleepiness with Dr. Quinn Eastman, science writer and author of The Woman Who Couldn't Wake Up: Hypersomnia and the Science of Sleepiness, and Diana Kimmel, co-founder of the Hypersomnia Alliance, and board member of the Hypersomnia Foundation.Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. Life After Death: A Warning From The Other Side You wake up. Sleepiness fades as your eyes slowly open to a bright white light. And it feels warm and familiar; it feels like home. And your whole family is there to meet you. Your entire life flashes before your eyes, like scenes from a movie. The good. The bad. Even the awful things you've done. But everything comes together. It all finally makes sense. With this enormous weight off your shoulders, the memory of your life starts to fade, just like a dream. A familiar voice says: "We're happy you're here. We missed you. But - you can't stay." What? You just got here. You're getting kicked out already? The voice says, "They need you. But we'll see you again when the time is right." And you know, somehow, the voice is telling the truth. Suddenly, a burst of red-hot pain rips through your chest. It feels like every single cell in your body is on fire. You can't breathe. A scream forces your eyes open. It's a blood-curdling scream, like an animal being eaten alive. Then you realize: the scream is coming from you. You're in a hospital bed surrounded by doctors and nurses. They all take a step back. Stunned. They're staring at you. But why? Well - you just came back from the dead. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------     HELP ACU SPREAD THE WORD!  Please go to Apple Podcasts and give ACU a 5 star rating. Sleep was taking over Anna's life. Despite multiple alarm clocks and powerful stimulants, the young Atlanta lawyer could sleep for thirty or even fifty hours at a stretch. She stopped working and began losing weight because she couldn't stay awake long enough to eat. Anna's doctors didn't know how to help her until they tried an oddball drug, connected with a hunch that something produced by her body was putting her to sleep. The Woman Who Couldn't Wake Up: Hypersomnia and the Science of Sleepiness (Columbia UP, 2023) tells Anna's story-and the broader story of her diagnosis, idiopathic hypersomnia (IH), a shadowy sibling of narcolepsy that has emerged as a focus of sleep research and patient advocacy. Quinn Eastman explores the science around sleepiness, recounting how researchers have been searching for more than a century for the substances that tip the brain into slumber. He argues that investigation of IH could unlock new understandings of how sleep is regulated and controlled. Eastman foregrounds the experiences of people with IH, relating how publicity around Anna's successful treatment helped others form a community. He shows how a group of patients who felt neglected or dismissed united to steer research toward their little-known disorder. Sharing emerging science and powerful stories, this book testifies to the significance of underrecognized diseases and sheds new light on how our brains function, day and night. It is essential reading for anyone interested in sleep and sleep disorders, including those affected by or seeking to treat them. Melek Firat Altay is a neuroscientist, biologist and musician. Her research focuses on deciphering the molecular and cellular mechanisms of neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental disorders. Learn more about your ad choices.
