Today's podcast features Kevin Mulcahy. Kevin is an experienced sports and S&C coach and owner-operator of the Design the Game Project. He has worked with various sports teams, athletes, professionals, and clubs across three continents, for over 30 years. Kevin takes a multi-lateral focus on human movement, skill development, and S&C, led by a deep interest in ecological dynamics and the constraints led approach to coaching and motor learning. Sport and the process of athlete development has undergone a major shift in the last 3-4 decades. Where free play used to be a hallmark of young athletes, the majority of athletic development now happens in the realm of supervised, cognitively overloaded, and hyper-accelerated practices and games. This aspect of sport (and sports performance) does get talked about, but the nuances of how things should actually change from both a developmental aspect are rarely discussed. On today's show, Kevin gives his perspective on ideal athlete development from an ecological and environmental point of view. He lays out the difference between the dominant “cognitive” approach to coaching and training, relative to an ecological approach. Kevin also gets into skill development, game-play and the importance of motor learning, and an overall athlete-centered, approach to training. Kevin's experience crosses many of the traditional lines drawn in athletics, and as such, helps us to form new connections and understand the athlete development process on a deeper level. How are they connected to skill as we see it? Because we see the action of a player throwing a basket, pulling a dummy solo, dribbling through a player in soccer, whatever and we see that as a fixed skill and that's something they did and they must practice that a thousand times. But versus the more ecological way looking at it like, you know, they saw an opportunity to act, they saw a gap, they saw space, they got free at the corner for a three point shot, whatever it is. And they just took it” - Kevin Mulcahy “But traditionally, I would have struggled to get soccer and basketball players to engage in strength and conditioning more than any other sport, right. I don't know if that related to the street element where they have so much exposure, they have so much play, they feel good from it, they look good. I don't need (S&C). Why would I need that? You know, I'm well built. - Kevin Mulcahy "I believe it was Steffan Jones,

Episode 111: This interview is about finding better ways of having your practice time transfer to game success. As a strength coach, I'm always thinking about how the exercises we do in the weight room impact my player's ability to move and handle contact on the court. Just because someone can add more weight onto a barbell, doesn't mean they've become a better basketball player. And what today's guest shares is that just because your ball handling or shooting has improved in a drill, it doesn't mean that you'll be able to do it during a game. Tyler Leclerc is a gym owner and player development coach located in Lowell, Massachusetts. Tyler uses the constraints-led approach and small-sided games to get results that transfer for players of all ages. Today I got to pick his brain on why a games-based approach to training produces superior results and is more fun than doing traditional 1-on-0 drills. If you're looking for new training ideas that are based in motor learning science, you'll love what Tyler has to share. You can find Tyler on social media @tjltrainingInstagram @HoopCommitmentTwitter @HoopCommitmentFacebook HoopCommitmentWebsite HoopCommitment.com
Super excited to get Tyler on for a second time, any time I get to chop it up with him is a good day! This week he and I talk about how to get the most out of 1v1 sessions, as well as how small group work is actually the most specific skill work you can get. 1v1 is an opportunity to improve general skills whereas group work is a lot more specific, interesting topic! We also talk about the difference between training pro's or higher level athletes versus younger athletes, also how maybe our skill work should look very similar across positions up until about senior year of high school - too often we box players in to a specific role too early. We talk business in-season as a trainer, how to keep money coming in and Tyler gives insight on both what he's doing currently while owning a gym as well as when he didn't own a gym and what he did during this time of year.Lastly we talk content, how he comes up with his ideas, his relationship and communication with his Alex (his videographer) and a lot of other great things regarding content.Make sure to check Tyler out on social if you haven't:IG - https://www.instagram.com/tjltraining/YT - https://www.youtube.com/c/TylerLeclerc

Welcome back to this episode of BFR radio. As I'm recording this episode, it actually coincides with the start of the 2020, or should I say 2021 Tokyo Olympic summer games. I'm actually currently sitting in my hotel room in Cairns far, north Queensland, helping out with the Australian track and field team in particular, I work with three athletes, one sprinter, female, 200 meter runner Riley Day and also 2 decathletes, Ashley Moloney and Cedric Dubler. And there'll be competing very soon. So keeping an eye out for them. With respect to these athletes, I mainly do their strength programs, but I'm also the shot put and discus coach for the two decathletes, it's actually been a really exciting few weeks seeing the athletes finalize their preparation. And as it's the Olympics, I thought it would be fitting that this mini series would look at how to use BFR in sporting movements or for the benefit or performance of sporting outcomes. I thought that was fitted well with the theme of the Olympics, and it might give a sports coach and idea for their own athletes on how they can incorporate it for the benefit of sporting perform. Now, also remember that they are contra-indications for BFR use and this needs to be taken in the correct context. For example, if your athletes have a low training age, you need to firstly, ensure that they're covering the big rocks with respect to training and recovery, and you actually might have more benefit in getting the simple things correct before even contemplating doing blood flow restriction. Onto the article and the one that I'm going to review today is called, Occlusion training during specific futsal training improves aspects of physiological and physical performance. Journal of sports science & medicine, 19(2), 374. Amani-Shalamzari, S., Sarikhani, A., Paton, C., Rajabi, H., Bayati, M., Nikolaidis, P. T., & Knechtle, B. (2020). Although, futsal is not in the Olympics, soccer for my southern hemisphere friends, or football for my European friends is. Therefore I thought that the concept in the training of, and the movements performed are quite similar. This is a great practical use of BFR in a sporting movement. Hope you enjoy it. Before you head off and listen to the podcast, a couple of favours from me to you. If you know of someone who would benefit from this episode, please share it. And also, if you're enjoying the podcast, please give it a rating on iTunes. Nugget Of the Day: “The limiting factor is not resources, for they are plentiful, but knowledge, which is scarce” This quote leads us into our guest Jordan Nieuwsma! Jordan is currently a sports performance coach at Elon University and has spent time at the University of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Concordia St.Paul as well as other spots. I found Jordan through a power point that was sent to me on a NSCA conference talk he gave on “Sports Movement through the eyes of an athlete” which does an amazing job of breaking down the sport and questioning if what a lot of traditional weight room programs is doing are correct. Today we tried to dive deep into the world of the constraints led approach, small sided games and how to bridge the gap between the weight room and what is actually going on, on the field. Jordan talked alot about some of his small sided games and he has a ton of examples on his Youtube which can be found here https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYfwPuzm4RkKiz0TD-TGLwA Let me know if you have any feedback and what you want covered in the next podcast! The genius of good coaching is to make hard work seem like FUN! When planning your practices they must duplicate the excitement of the game. As coaching educators we must create an environment which forces players to make their own decisions. We must create an atmosphere where players are allowed to teach themselves and provide a practice that develops instinctive attacking and defending habits. One of the many strategies we as coaches should be using more often across youth fields are small-sided games. The impact small-sided games vs alternative methods can have on your players is hard to disagree with if introduced appropriately. In today's episode "Koach Karl" joins us to dive deeper into the methodology behind small-sided games and why he believes so deeply in a FUNdamental approach to player development.Want to read more from "Koach Karl"? This week I discovered that the training session I did on give-and-goes helped my young players better understand how to stay onside.
