In the weeds, talking to the researchers about their work and applying it constantly to his own work and then creating content and making it super consumable for anyone listening Trevor and talk about a metaphor he coined "zoo tiger vs jungle tiger", what that means to him and how it applies to life and even sport. We talk a little about representation and why it's so important and even why we lack in that area sometimes, we talk about the mindset needed to truly grow and then we talk about the importance of feedback when teaching and/or coaching!Make sure to check out Trevor, you won't regret it:IG - https://www.instagram.com/learnerlab/Website - https://thelearnerlab.com/Podcast - https://thelearnerlab.com/podcast/

Trevor Ragan is the founder of The Learner Lab - an educational website designed to unpack and share the science of learning and development. He spends his time with thought leaders and researchers from the worlds of psychology and developmental science, consumes their research, connects the dots, and shares it with anyone that will listen. He's worked with professional, college, and Olympic sports teams, Fortune 50 companies, prisons, and in hundreds of schools across the country. These workshops are designed to help people understand and apply important principles of development, in order to become better, more resilient learners.   Trevor had a number of amazing insights during our conversation. Some of them include: “Learning is underrated” (6:20). “Learning is a skill. You can't argue with that. It is something that you can get better at” (6:30). “If I'm good at learning, that's going to benefit me in any scenario” (6:50). “You don't have to love a loss. You don't have to love getting rejected. You don't have to love getting cut. But we can appreciate that within those setbacks, there are opportunities” (18:10). “I look at learning as a treasure hunt. If I get to learn a new a topic, I get really excited” (22:35). “We live in the best time ever for learning right now” (23:15). “Curiosity is super underrated” (26:10). “Listening is a skill. Can you get better at listening? Yes” (31:15). “The machinery in our brains that controls learning is plastic. Every time we choose to be intentional about a new skill and practice it, try to build it, yes we're going to get better at that skill, but we're also becoming a better learner in the process” (32:55). “At its core, growth mindset is the belief that I can change and grow and get better at stuff… That idea should be taught to anybody anywhere” (36:25). “The mindset of the leader is more important than we realized” (38:00). “A growth mindset is a belief in our capacity to change, it has nothing to do with how we feel” (39:05). “We can all change. We can all get better at stuff. That's the magic of being human. That's the magic of our brain” (43:10). “There are differences on the surface we see between people. We think it's generational, but more times than not it's something else” (49:40). “I'm going to [create content in the way] I would like to consume it, and I'm going to talk about the topics that are interesting to me. And if I do it in a way that I would like it and I would be interested, I think that's good enough” (58:50). “Play with the right scoreboard. What's the game you're trying to win here?” (1:04:15) “Make stuff that you think is cool” (1:04:25). “[I'm most curious about] storytelling [right now]” (1:08:30). “[Cold calling] is going to work more times than you think” (1:14:45). “You're never going to completely turn [fear] off” (1:17:15). “When you care about something that involves uncertainty, you're probably going to feel something” (1:18:10). “People can perform well and not feel great. You can perform well and feel nervous. You can feel well and perform crappy” (1:19:00).   Additionally, you can follow Trevor on Twitter and Instagram, and you can also find the website for The Learner Lab here. Today on the podcast, I am pleased to introduce the founder of Changing The Game Project, author of two #1 best-selling books, podcast host, and internationally known speaker (including TEDx and The U.S. Olympic Committee), John O'Sullivan! John and I go way back; we've spoken at conferences together, we've done booths together, and we've learned from one another. He's someone I respect, admire, cheer for, and look up to in the sports world. John is known for his wealth of practical, hands-on knowledge, and his passion for helping parents and coaches show up for their athletes in ways that really matter. He believes in creating a player-centered environment and tough-love coaching with compassion. What makes this episode stand out as being particularly relevant to parents and coaches is that John talks in-depth about how we can support young people RIGHT NOW, as the ripple effects of COVID-19 impact our world today. He gives sage advice about how you can support your athletes, push your athletes, and also hold space for their unique mindset challenges during this time. After being a guest on John O'Sullivan's Way of Champions Podcast, it was so fun to put him in the hot seat and sit in the student's chair. [8:22] How can we support athletes in a COVID-19 world? John talks openly about the importance of addressing athletes' mental health. He points to a notable increase in eating disorders, anxiety, and divorce. In his words, “in the last two years, the amount of kids I know in [these situations] are probably equivalent to the previous 25 years combined.” [15:12] When athlete behavior changes, there's usually something going on behind the scenes. John suggests asking one key question to get the conversation rolling, and shares how at-home stress can manifest on the field. Finally, John explains how he actively works to create a safe and joyful space at practice. [23:28] John answers the question, “How can you hold athletes to a high standard while they're struggling?” He likens cognitive injuries to physical injuries and encourages coaches and parents to treat them with compassion while holding them to a ‘rehabilitation plan'. [29:53] Burnout is REAL. John believes the best way to prevent burnout is to put yourself first, and sometimes that means hitting the brakes. If we can't take care of ourselves, we'll never be able to fully show up for others. [37:12] Peeling back the curtain on his own practice with mindfulness, John knows from experience that just a few minutes a day of mindfulness can be life-changing. [41:36] John and Lindsey wrap up our episode today with 5 rapid-fire questions. With a quick discussion about Atomic Habits, John's favorite outdoor activities, his family, and his love of coaching, John leaves us a few final nuggets of wisdom to end the episode! He gives sage advice about how you can support your athletes, push your athletes, and also hold space for their unique mindset challenges during this time.  After being a guest on John O'Sullivan's Way of Champions Podcast, it was so fun to put him in the hot seat and sit in the student's chair.  I love this conversation, I learned a ton, and I'm sure you will too.    Follow John: Website: https://changingthegameproject.com/  Podcast: https://changingthegameproject.com/category/podcast/  Instagram: @ctgprojecthq https://www.instagram.com/ctgprojecthq/  Books: https://www.amazon.com/John-OSullivan/e/B00CBH98SA  WOC Conference:  https://changingthegameproject.mykajabi.com/woc-2022-registration    Here's a glance at this episode: [4:32] John begins by telling us about his upcoming virtual conference and its impressive line-up of speakers, including Steve Kerr, Dave Aranda, Trevor Ragan, and Ron Adams.

Today on the podcast, I am joined by author, podcast host, founder of Train Ugly and the Learner Lab; my friend and fellow lifelong student, Trevor Ragan! Working with best selling authors, Olympic coaches, professional athletes, renowned professors, and thousands of coaches, teachers, students, and players from all over the world, Trevor is (in his words) “On an adventure to understand the science of how to become a better learner”. Due to his years and years of research, boots-on-the-ground, and behind-the-scenes, Trevor has a special ability to dissect and synthesize really complicated concepts and research into exercises and ideas that you and I can implement. He's a man of science and great insight beyond his years. In this episode, we get deep into the topic of fixed vs. growth mindset, how to run towards fear, and how your beliefs ABOUT your emotions actually shape your experience. He shares stories of middle school “anti-talent shows”, talks about the need for psychological safety in teams, and even opens up about being diagnosed with cancer. When I first started my podcast, my husband told me, “interview people that you want to learn from”, and Trevor was high on my list. Lindsey and Trevor discuss the learning curve for new mindset coaches, failing on a public stage, and what Dave Chappelle has to do with it. [12:01] Starting with the quote, “If you want to change a behavior, attack it at the mindet and environment, not just the behavior” Trevor explains how he (personally) runs toward fear. He also talks about the science of stress, and gives tips to help you shift the way you think about stress and other “negative” emotions. [16:41] Struggle feeds a fixed mindset. But if you can start to see stress as physical preparation and a necessary part of growth, you can build a growth mindset and increase your capacity for discomfort.. [22:11] How does your understanding of nerves affect your experience? Trevor points out the problem with toxic positivity, and explains in great detail how you can make room and process difficult human emotions. [24:54] Psychological safety is “The feeling that I can be myself, take risks, and ask questions”. It's also the key to great teams (and the science backs it up). When you don't feel psychologically safe in a group, the learning centers of your brain shut down, and you're less likely to engage in learning behaviors. [29:58] What can a middle school “anti-talent show” teach us about psychological safety? Trevor shares his experience to illustrate his belief that modeling behaviors of vulnerability and bravery and failure builds safety. [33:03] Trevor talks about his audiobook (linked above) which includes guest voices and sound effects to give the listener an immersive learning experience. [38:21] We all want to be the best, right? But Trevor asks the question, “Do you really need to be a master at something for it to have a massive effect on others?” Trevor makes his case for settling for “B+ work” and talks about how he uses storytelling as a cornerstone of teaching. [44:55] Trevor speaks vulnerably about what it was like to be diagnosed with cancer and what he learned during and after the experience. [52:16] Lindsey and Trevor wrap up their episode with actionable ways to grow your mindset and be more intentional about learning. Trevor believes in creating small, sustainable routines to create long-term change and growth. As the popularity of “Growth Mindset” has flourished over the past few years, we've seen many articles, books, and resources come out about how kids should be taught to have a growth mindset, over a fixed mindset. Yet, a lot of the talk around this switch in mindset is focused on what you believe will happen, versus the actual results. In my recent conversation with Trevor Ragan (founder of TrainUgly.com) we talk about all things “growth mindset” and the important distinction that happens when we see for ourselves that skills are built, not born.

Book Insights are formal, structured summary, analysis and exploration of a bestselling nonfiction book. Each episode is read by a professional voice actor and will introduce a new title selected specifically for its value to your work and life. Book Lounge episodes are casual discussions about the book, the author, and anything else that comes along through the course of conversation. It's more of a broad chat about how the book relates to current, everyday life. Should I listen to both the Book Insight and the Book Lounge episode on the same book? Sure! Each episode works fine as a standalone piece, so no requirement to listen to both or to listen in any particular order, but we definitely recommend (and think you'll enjoy!) both. Think of it like reading a book and liking it so much you want to chat about it on the porch with a friend. That is the vibe at the Book Lounge. Like what you hear? Jon Newman-Gonchar is the head volleyball coach at University of New Mexico. In April 2020, he called in to talk with Summer and Cody about the new challenges facing higher education and athletics. Jon's watershed moment was on March 17th when a recruiting trip was cancelled and UNM's Spring Break was extended. "The next thing we knew, it was all moving online."He's missing his players, missing his staff, and missing the routine that used to come with the seasonal nature of college sports. As information was constantly changing, Jon had to navigate competing stories and plans while trying to be the best source of knowledge for his players. "There are so many more questions than there are answers right now." He believes that, "The best thing we can be is vulnerable."In trying to plan for supporting his athletes, Jon was dedicated to doing what was best for the students. He and his coaching staff developed a virtual structure for the team. "I didn't want them to lose touch with academics." Volleyball players committed to doing course work during the time their classes used to be scheduled. The team also met regularly virtually to discuss topics like public speaking, high-pressure situation, and other student-selected conversations. When Jon thinks about the future, he hopes his son will have a traditional kindergarten experience, and that his future volleyball players will have the quintessential first years of college. He's fearful of the unknown and unsure of what to expect. His players are used to him saying regularly, "That's just part of the deal" when things go poorly. This mantra has helped his team to roll with the punches in Spring 2020. "Let's get better with people." You literally need the struggle and resistance to change your body. And the same rules apply to changing our brain. And so it's a call to action! Look, getting better isn't pretty and it's not only okay for it to be a bit ugly, it's unnecessary! The same tactics that we use to change our body with fitness and working out... those are the same rules that apply to changing our brain. So many times when we try to learn something, we try it twice, it doesn't work and then we just stop?! That would be the equivalent of doing like one set of curls. And then wake up in the morning like, oh, not bigger. I guess I can't grow. Nobody would do that!! People in the fitness world notice that, like literally, anyone can make any muscle stronger if they work it out! And… the same rules apply to skills. In today’s BPT Podcast I talked with Trevor Ragan from the “Learner Lab” and Train Ugly. Trever interviewed Michael merzenich. He's known as the father of neuro plasticity, which is like, the building blocks for all skill and development. Neuroplasticity shows how when we learn something, we're actually building new connections in our brain. And this guy has been studying the brain since the late 60s, early 70s. And during the conversation, one of the most profound things he said, like, with 100% certainty, absolutely anyone can get better at virtually anything! We know it can bring up a little fear and anxiety to create change… We address that too! Researchers have a technique they call Reappraising fear. Look into the research of fear, anxiety, stress, one of the worst possible things to do with those emotions is to try to suppress them. Yet 91% of people think that that's the best thing to do with them. We assume that something's wrong, that we're not ready, that we're not prepared that this isn't the right thing to do. But the truth is like, that's literally just a part of our brain. It's called our amygdala. And that's its response to anything that takes us out of our comfort zone. And so this tactic of reappraising fear is to help people understand feeling uncomfortable, doesn't mean you're doing something wrong. And it doesn't mean you can't do this. It means you're human. Like literally the human response to anything that stretches us out of our comfort zone is discomfort. And so like that seems simple, but it's like a superpower skill and tool that we can use to help us become better learners. Help us make bigger changes! The essence of a growth mindset is what I believe - I can grow. That's an essential fuel source to making a change the opposite of a fixed mindset that like, I can't learn that I can't do that. If I'm operating from those limiting beliefs, I'm probably not going to take a sustained action that goes for learning... that goes for working out. Now, the interesting thing, and the topic that we're digging into now is how actually the beliefs of the person in charge the beliefs of the leader can also become like self fulfilling, just like the beliefs of the individual. So Trevor interviewed Robert Rosenthal, he's in his 90s he's still a professor in California and he researches what they call the Pygmalion effect. And the Pygmalion effect basically shows how the Applications of the person in charge could become self-fulfilling prophecies. What the hell does that mean???

Growth Mindset has recently become a hot topic in the world of sports, and for good reason. Mindset, which can be greatly affected by the feedback you give or receive, is key to learning and performance. Trevor Ragan is one of the most well versed in the science of learning and how mindset affects it, and he's out there working with teams, coaches, teachers, and businesses to actually apply the science. Trevor is the founder of Train Ugly, a group dedicated to sharing the science behind mindset, feedback, and the learning process, and how it relates to performance.  I highly suggest you visit Train Ugly online and spend time watching their excellent videos or reading their material.  It'll be time well spent.   During our conversation, Trevor gave me a great list of resources where we can learn more about these topics.  If you buy through our links at www.powercompanyclimbing.com/blog/2017/11/6/episode-64-fixed-vs-growth-mindset-with-trevor-ragan-from-trainugly, we get a small percentage from Amazon (it doesn't raise your prices) to help support the podcast. Trevor Ragan is the founder of Train Ugly From Trevor: I AM ON AN ADVENTURE… To challenge and question EVERYTHING that we think we know about sports, education, and development. Through this journey I've worked with best-selling authors, olympic coaches, professional athletes, renowned professors, and thousands of coaches, teachers, students, and players from all over the world. These experiences helped me to discover some incredibly important research in the fields of motor learning, performance science, and psychology that should have totally changed the way we train and develop students, athletes, and people in general – but they have not. It's my mission to change that. Each morning I get out of bed inspired to read, research, learn, and share as much as possible with students, athletes, coaches, and teachers.   Website: trainugly.com Facebook: /trainingugly/ Twitter: @train_ugly Youtube: /SabiSushi1 - Listen Now: Listen on iTunes: iTunes link Listen on Stitcher: Stitcher link Listen on Google Play Music: Google Play link - Quote 'You have to be bad first' Cringe Moment Being too focused on the win or loss - Enjoy the journey! Teaching Skills 2 pillars: Motor learning - The number of reps Make reps: Random & Gamelike - Games are random, so reps should be too. Great video on this: youtu.be/m_5nWKyRzKM Growth mindset - The people who believe in their capacity to learn and grow, do much better at learning and growing. 'Skills are built not born.' Learning is not easy - you have to be bad first. You have to understand that being bad first is part of the process. Dealing with failure Trevor had a goal since 7th grade to make the Duke basketball team He tried out as a walk-on, and was the last one cut. How do you deal with this type of failure? Learning to appreciate the value of the struggle, while you are in the middle of the process Have huge goals that you can picture yourself doing. But then focus on the systems and process that will get you to that goal. The result of achieving the goal does not define you. Championship Culture  Create a safe place to learn You're going to be bad first Don't create a culture that only values success and perfection Teammates and coaches need to take the focus off the outcome when building up their teammates and players Coach K from Duke - He invests a huge amount of time in creating 1 on 1 relationships with all his players Best borrowed/stolen idea Karch Kiraly - Now coach of the women's U.S. Olympic team - Always learning. He asked Trevor after Trevor observed his practice: 'What do you think we can do better?' This week, Trevor Ragan of trainugly.com joined Stephen to talk about "how to train ugly."  Trevor has had a tremendous amount of success breaking down the old, traditional view of training (i.e. control every aspect of the athletes technique, and drill over and over and over the same way, then hopefully eliminate enough mistakes to create success) with concepts like random vs block training and the growth mindset (touch the ball often, learn through mistakes and develop the ability to live in the moment and produce the results.) He shared his journey from talking to the researchers who knew about the concepts of motor learning and then ultimately, attempting  to educate coaches and athletes about a new way, how they can train ugly, have fun and have more success. Our guest today is Trevor Ragan from TrainUgly.com. Trevor explains his “jungle tiger” analogy and walks us through his four-step framework to achieve amazing results in your game. Trevor explains that Train Ugly is the marriage of the mental component, or growth mindset, and motor science learning. He emphasizes that a motor learning science practice can get ugly – it’s harder, more chaotic and more random. When you’re in that zone, you make more mistakes.
