Join me on this meditative journey to the heart of Hekate's Cave where we meet The Cailleach for unburdening our "stones," on the Winter Solstice (or anytime we need to let go our heaviness). I adore The Cailleach. She connects me to my Celtic roots, and always welcomes the weary traveler, offering shelter from the winter's storms. This episode expands on the Skotia Chapter in Entering Hekate's Cave by Cyndi Brannen. From Entering Hekate's Cave: The Journey Through Darkness To Wholeness The Cailleach[i]is an expression of The Crone, a healing spirit that offers respite along the journey through the cave. There are stories regaling The Cailleach as the eternal wise woman healer. Sometimes denigrated as a mean-spirited hag, The Cailleach of various locations, such as the Cailleach Béara (Cally Berra)[ii], were Goddesses of Winter to ancient Celts. The importance of place is central to the tales of The Cailleach, where she typically be based in a specific location, such as Béara. Being linked to places signifies how deeply she is connected to the land and its people. She is of the earth itself. This connection of place also speaks to her message of reconnecting to the land, of treating the earth well so that we can be nourished. [i] Sorita d'Este and David Rankine. Joan is a level two NAHA Certified Aromatherapist with decades of experience working with animals and plant medicine combined with massage. In this episode, Joan shares some of her colorful field experiences and encourages safety awareness. She specializes in work with horses enabling self-medicative behavior by offering plant extracts that contain similar constituents to those found in their evolutionary history. Joan Sorita, born in Los Angeles, California, in a Salvation Army Hospital, is a lover of animals and music. She worked as a vet tech, riding instructor and managed Olivia Newton John's farm. She moved to the High Desert in Southern California to open a re-hab and riding facility. There she became committed to herbs, therapies, aromatics, and animals' recovery emotionally and physically and studied with the elders in the horse world that were doing horse massage. There was not much in this field at the time when she started this work. Joan was the Animal Aromatic Science Course director at Northwest School of Animal Massage in 2017. She co-founded NWSAM in 2001, adding her 25 years of experience in the equine performance world with bodywork and aromatics. Joan has studied with other pioneers in Animal Self-Medication; Caroline Ingraham, Ingrid Martin, Jade Shutes, Kelly Holland Azzaro, Catherine Bird, Nayana Morag. Along with her husband Robert, she owns a farm in Montesano, Wa. They grow and harvest some of the ingredients for their products under the name Therapy Corner Store. Her daughter Casey Sorita now runs the store so that Joan can concentrate on making her aromatic animal products and teach ethics and safety with animals and aromatics. Joan seeks out like-minded thinkers in this field so she can spread the word. For episode #58 we are joined by Sorita d'Este. An accomplished author she has penned the Circle for Hekate (V.1 & 2) as well as around 20 other titles. Aspects of Ancient Greek and Aegean religious and magical practices, as well as Ancient Egyptian, Hermetic and Celtic threads, can be found in her work that combines her experience gained in Initiatory Craft, as well as traditions preserved in other European traditions, Orphism and the Grimoires. Today we discuss Hekate, her revival in modern witchcraft and Sorita gives us a superb background to the history of the goddess and dispels some modern myths. She has travelled extensively, visiting many ancient religious sites – including temples in Malta, Italy, Turkey, Bulgaria, Greece, Sri Lanka and India and in the Plus show we discuss travelling and in particular her journey to the Temple of Hekate in Lagina Turkey. Sorite D'este joins us today to discuss the multifaceted Titan Hekate. Sorita educates us on the history and background of this remarkable and truly complex deity. Her traditional role, her functions, her jurisdiction and her associations. We also tackle some common misconceptions and wrong thinking associated with this goddess, fueled in large part by marketing and pop-culture perceptions. From the author's page: Sorita d’Este has been experimenting with ways of walking on the liminal since she was a child, exploring along the way many pathways of experiencing magic, mysticism and religion. Her own personal practice integrates aspects of Hellenic (Greek), Egyptian and Hermetic practices with a lived Orphic inspired philosophy, and experience gained in Initiatory Craft, traditions preserved in Italian, French and British grimoires and other contemporary esoteric teachings of the East and West. She has been teaching and writing on magic, folklore and religion for more than 20 years during which her work has been published in both mainstream and community magazines, websites and books. Her published work includes Circle for Hekate (Vol.1 & 2); Practical Elemental Magick (2008); Visions of the Cailleach (2009), Hekate Liminal Rites (2009); The Cosmic Shekinah and Artemis (2006). When she is not writing or researching obscure subjects, she can usually be found digging in the garden, making a mess in the kitchen or conjuring something in the temple or enjoying the company of her son, family or friends. Having lived in Cape Town (South Africa) as a child, she moved to London in 1995. She currently lives on a hill in Glastonbury, Somerset from where she runs the independent esoteric publishers Avalonia (www.avaloniabooks.co.uk) which she founded in 2005. My guest for this episode is author, publisher, researcher and priestess Sorita d’Este. Sorita has been teaching and writing on a wide range of esoteric subjects for over twenty years, with her work being published in both mainstream and community magazines, websites and an impressive amount of books. This episode was inspired by one of these works, Isles of the Many Gods, which is a comprehensive A-Z of the many Pagan Gods and Goddesses worshipped in Britain from the Iron Age to the late Middle Ages. We talked about some of those deities, their origins and nature, along with Sorita's life long interest in exploring the many pathways of experiencing magic, mysticism, folklore and religion. Lovely stuff indeed. Enjoy! To find out more about Sorita and her books please visit http://sorita.co.uk/.

Visions of the Cailleach by Sorita d'Este and David Rankine Standing astride the British landscape, looms the giant blue form of the Cailleach. Whether she is seen as a benevolent earth-shaping giantess, harsh winter hag goddess, shape-shifting crone, guardian of sacred wells and animals, or ancient bestower of sovereignty; the Cailleach appears in many roles and manifestations in myths and legends across the British Isles. Tracking the Cailleach across thousands of years through folklore, literature and place names, the authors have uncovered startling references which hint at a hidden priestess cult worshipping the Cailleach from ancient times through into the twentieth century. By exploring her myths and legends, they demonstrate the hugely significant role of the Cailleach in the early history of the British Isles. Beinn na Caillich and Goir a' Bhlair - the seat of the Cailleach Looking beyond the veil of the sacred landscape, the vision of the Cailleach confronts the seeker, in hills and rocks, lakes and wells, burial chambers and stormy skies. Now finally the primal elemental power of the Cailleach is revealed in her full glory, in the tales and places of Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man; as well as in traces of her presence in England, Wales, Jersey, Brittany, Spain and Norway. For more details about the book visit the Avalonia site or you can buy the book on Amazon. Tribal Gathering by Keltoria Keltoria is a Celtic music “group” based in the Knockmealdown Mountains of South Tipperary in Ireland. Keltoria music is a hybrid of powerful, elemental traditional Celtic and New Age styles that is pretty unique. Powerful and Elemental are the key words here. Driven by thundering rhythms and frantic strings, this is not for the faint hearted. A combination of haunting, gothic/celtic atmospheres and thundering rhythms creates a music that is “spiritual” in the sense of the raw power of nature. This is music to make your spirit jump up and fling itself about in wild, whirling abandon. More than that, we'd like to offer a heart-felt thank you to the band for giving us unlimited access to their music for the Show. They are amazing people. We are also very grateful for our family and friends, who come out or support us in many different ways. Cernunnos & the Gundestrup Cauldron The Gundestrup cauldron is a richly decorated silver vessel, thought to date from between 200 BC and 300 AD, or more narrowly between 150 BC and 1 BC. This places it within the late La Tène period or early Roman Iron Age. The cauldron is the largest known example of European Iron Age silver work. For more information, consult the Wiki page for the Cauldron. The Witch-God Cernunnos by Sorita D'Este This anthology is the first of its kind to be focused on the horned gods of our ancestors and includes both scholarly essays, bardic retellings of stories such as that of Herne the Hunter and a number of experiential essays. Invocations and meditation journeys are also included. The piece we bring you from this wonderful book is about the Celtic God Cernunnos and was written by the book's editor, the talented Sorita D'Este. His short stories in Irish include Eoghainín na nÉan ("Eoineen of the Birds"), Íosagán, Na Bóithre ("The Roads"), and An Bhean Chaointe ("The Keening Woman"). These are translated into English by Joseph Campbell (in the Collected Works of 1917). [Wiki] Mise Éire: Sine mé ná an Chailleach Bhéarra Mór mo ghlóir: Mé a rug Cú Chulainn cróga. Mór mo náir: Mo chlann féin a dhíol a máthair. Mór mo phian: Bithnaimhde do mo shíorchiapadh. Mór mo bhrón: D'éag an dream inar chuireas dóchas. Mise Éire: Uaigní mé ná an Chailleach Bhéarra. I am Ireland: I am older than the old woman of Beare. Great my glory: I who bore Cuchulainn, the brave. Great my shame: My own children who sold their mother. Great my pain: My irreconcilable enemy who harrasses me continually... Great my sorrow That crowd, in whom I placed my trust, died. I am Ireland: I am lonelier than the old woman of Beare. The Children of Lir by Sora Sora (aka Andrea Hunt) is an independent musician with a different philosophy on how she wants to share her music with the world. Perhaps it was all of the touring she did as a teenager with the Calgary Youth Orchestra and the Calgary Fiddlers that made her appreciate the subtleties of having a solid home base. It may have been the influence of playing with elite musicians and performing to sell out crowds that seeded her desire to mold a new musical lifestyle. Her natural flair for Celtic vocal styling leaps out in her 2003 debut CD “Winds Of Change”. On this self produced project all 13 tracks were recorded live off the floor. “What you hear is what we did” Sora says. “Everyone was in the same small room at the same time”. The arrangements for each song were chosen specifically because they were so different from anything she had ever heard – which gave her the chance to put her heart and sound into each track. You can find her music on Myspace or Corvid Media. You can find out more details about Sora on her Contributor Page on our website. Children of Lir When on feathered wings take flight 'Oer the hills beating the time To the swans final song Sung so sweet, so for so long As they leave rocky shore Flying west with the sun And I watch from the land I love My past come undone Oh Children of Lir where have you gone? The hills they are bare but echo your song Echo your song The stones silently fall And where do I belong? On the hollow faerie mound The silence calls mocking the time When the swans haunting song Carried far, resounding strong And their stories they drift Upon stormy seas Lost in the waves of time The island, it is me Oh Children of Lir where have you gone? The hills they are bare but echo your song Echo your song The stones silently fall And where do I belong? When the bells so loudly toll An anthem rung drowing the sound To the swans final song Silver notes, fading, withdrawn Change swiftly comes On the wings of the dove The voices once heard are gone Where are they love? Oh Children of Lir where have you gone? The hills they are bare but echo your song Echo your song Oh Children of Lir where have you gone? The hills they are bare but echo your song Echo your song The stones silently fall And where do I belong? Do I belong? Promo - Searching for my Wives William Bostock Searching For My Wives by William Bostock Imagine how it all began, this marvelous, long journey of Humanity. Some souls work for peace and happiness. Others, though, despoil, degrade, and kill. This is a novel of past lives, reincarnation, and our occult history. Not many protohumans were alive, one and one-half million years ago, but all of us had souls, and souls persist, and there are souls which lived in hominids in Chesowanja, eastern Africa who have lived among us almost to the present day. Shimmer loves his wives, Sita and Ahalya, and tries to share sweet lives with them, but the trickster Murk, intent on dragging Mankind down, drives black souls to attack the ones who love. Come along as Shimmer leads migrations. Relive the waning of the Great Ice Age and the planetwide disaster. And remember how Old Kingdom Egypt travelled through a pleat in time to stabilize and rule the river plains of northern India. Re-experience Murk's dark campaign to undermine that peaceful land, and once again respond to Shimmer and Old Shiver's call to arms and meet the enemy between two rivers at fabled Kurukshetra.
