Hello and welcome to Episode 564 of Linux in the Ham Shack. In this episode, the hosts take a preliminary in-depth look at the C#/F# UI toolkit known as Avalonia. …
The Caledonian orogeny is one of the most recent extinct mountain-building events. It took place in several phases during the three-way collision of continental blocks called Laurentia, Baltica, and Avalonia during the early stages of the assembly of the supercontinent Pangea. In the process, Himalayan-scale mountains were formed. While these mountains have been worn down today, we still see plenty of evidence for their existence in locations straddling the Atlantic and the Norwegian Sea. In the podcast, Rob Strachan describes the tectonic movements that led to the orogen and explains how we can reconstruct the sequence of events that occurred and what we can learn about today's mountain-forming processes by studying the exhumed rocks of ancient orogens. Strachan has studied the rocks of the Caledonian orogen for over 40 years, focusing on unraveling the history of the orogen in what is Scotland today. He is Emeritus Professor of Geology at the University of Portsmouth.

RJJ Software's Software Development Service This episode of The Modern .NET Show is supported, in part, by RJJ Software's Podcasting Services, whether your company is looking to elevate its UK operations or reshape its US strategy, we can provide tailored solutions that exceed expectations. Show Notes You can use Linq to write database... to query a database and I thought, "well you can interactively write queries in SQL using tools like SQL Server Management Studio, so wouldn't it be great if you could do the same thing in Linq?" So I wrote a tool to do that—that was LinqPad—to as you can just type Linq queries in interactively. And then once I released that it became quite popular and there were a lot of people using it, including a lot of folks at Microsoft were using it. And I was getting a lot of feature requests — Joe Albahari In this episode, Joe Albahari joined us to talk about LinqPad—yes, that LinqPad. The one tool which makes all .NET developers lives easier. Don't worry if you've never heard of LinqPad, as Joe and I talk about why you should use it, and how it can make your .NET life way more productive. We also talked about handling feature requests, and building a development platform. When something doesn't work correctly, it can be really hard to figure out what's going on. Sometimes it just requires experimentation. And that's something I dislike. I always like to try to understand exactly what's going on underneath and then try and from that understanding make something work. I don't just like trying random stuff. — Joe Albahari We also round out our conversation by taking some questions from the community, which Joe graciously agreed to answer for us. Don't forget that you can join the community (for free) over at dotnetcore.show/discord where you'll be able to connect with other listeners, share interesting links, propose episode ideas, and suggest questions for guests. After recording, Joe and I spoke in depth about the possibility of a cross-platform version of LinqPad; later that day (we recorded on May 2nd, 2024), I sent off an email introducing Joe to the team at Avalonia, and a few weeks before this episode dropped Joe announced a version of LinqPad which is coming to macOS. How cool is that? Anyway, without further ado, let's sit back, open up a terminal, type in `dotnet new podcast` and we'll dive into the core of Modern .NET. ✨

Welcome to season 5 of the award-winning .NET Core Podcast! Check that link for proof. Hello everyone and welcome to THE .NET Core Podcast. An award-winning podcast where we reach into the core of the .NET technology stack and, with the help of the .NET community, present you with the information that you need in order to grok the many moving parts of one of the biggest cross-platform, multi-application frameworks on the planet. I am your host, Jamie "GaProgMan" Taylor. In this episode, I talked with Mike James about Avalonia and XPF. Mike is the CEO of Avalonia, and I wanted to talk about some of the things that Avalonia and it's XPF offering solve. This meant discussing Avalonia's competitors (Uno, Maui, and native apps), and talking about Avalonia's lack of good quality documentation - this has been solved in the time since we recorded this interview (March 17th, 2023). Along the way, we talked about open source development and some of the expectations placed on open source developers by both the community and the open source developers themselves. And make sure to stick around to the very end to hear Mike drop some software engineering wisdom when he tells us precisely how the team got a cross platform UI framework running on all of the Linuxes - the way they did it might actually shock you. Philip and Bridget discuss 'Strange World' from Walt Disney Animation Studios. The Walt Disney Company celebrates its 100th anniversary and its feature animation division's 61st animated film, coinciding with a new castle logo redesign to celebrate the centennial milestone. With a premise pulled from pulp novels of the early twentieth century, 'Strange World' places viewers in the mysterious Victorian-styled land of Avalonia. Jaeger Clade is a famous explorer whose life's mission is to find passage through the impenetrable mountains surrounding the known world. Raised to follow in his father's footsteps, Searcher Clade abandons exploration in favor of science and learns to cultivate an energy-rich plant called Pando that technologically revolutionizes Avalonia. When the power of Pando is suddenly threatened, three generations of Jaegers must attempt to solve the problem and learn to work together as a family that hasn't always seen eye-to-eye. Welcome to season 4 of the award-winning .NET Core Podcast! Check that link for proof. The .NET Core Podcast is podcast where we reach into the core of the .NET technology stack and, with the help of the .NET community, present you with the information that you need in order to grok the many moving parts of one of the biggest cross-platform, multi-application frameworks on the planet. I am your host, Jamie "GaProgMan" Taylor. In this episode, I talked with Michael Babienco about DotPurple, a cross-platform GUI based .NET application which aims to make it easier to use the .NET CLI, and manage new project templates and global tools. I'll let Michael explain it in a moment, but it was originally created to help reduce the brain space required to remember how to use the .NET CLI whilst also boosting developer productivity and allowing developers to fall into the pit of success (rather than the pit of failure). Along the way, we also talked about helping to give back to the developer community, via tools or mentoring. We also discussed the benefits and drawbacks of creating a cross-platform GUI based .NET application and how, when .NET Core was first released there was no cross-platform GUI framework. These days, there are a lot of options, including MAUI and Avalonia (which is what DotPurple uses). The full show notes, including links to some of the things we discussed and a full transcription of this episode, can be found at https://dotnetcore.show/episode-82-dotpurple-with-michael-babienco/ Remember to rate and review the show on Apple Podcasts, Podchaser, or wherever you find your podcasts, this will help the show's audience grow. From the author's page: Sorita d’Este has been experimenting with ways of walking on the liminal since she was a child, exploring along the way many pathways of experiencing magic, mysticism and religion. Her own personal practice integrates aspects of Hellenic (Greek), Egyptian and Hermetic practices with a lived Orphic inspired philosophy, and experience gained in Initiatory Craft, traditions preserved in Italian, French and British grimoires and other contemporary esoteric teachings of the East and West. She has been teaching and writing on magic, folklore and religion for more than 20 years during which her work has been published in both mainstream and community magazines, websites and books. Her published work includes Circle for Hekate (Vol.1 & 2); Practical Elemental Magick (2008); Visions of the Cailleach (2009), Hekate Liminal Rites (2009); The Cosmic Shekinah and Artemis (2006). When she is not writing or researching obscure subjects, she can usually be found digging in the garden, making a mess in the kitchen or conjuring something in the temple or enjoying the company of her son, family or friends. Having lived in Cape Town (South Africa) as a child, she moved to London in 1995. The Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event, or 'GOBE', describes one of the most important increases in biodiversity in the history of life on earth. During a relatively short time span of some 25 million years, an explosion of new species, genera and families appeared. This increase in diversity was accompanied by an increase in ecosystem complexity. Plankton and suspension feeding organisms rapidly diversified and became important constituents of the food web. At the same time, large predators, such as the orthoconic nautiloids, evolved to exploit them. This biodiversity 'explosion' coincided with a dynamic period in earth's history during which continents were shifting, mountains were raised and massive volcanism occurred. Joining us to try and untangle the causes and consequences of this complex and fascinating period is Prof. David Harper of Durham University, UK.
Meg Thompson discusses Avalonia, the tectonic belt stretching from the Avalon Peninsula in Newfoundland and through Atlantic Canada to southeastern New England. She speaks about how Avalonia was not part of North America when its rock sequences formed 600-700 million years ago. Magnetic signatures acquired when igneous rocks in these sequences cooled from molten magma provide the principal means for establishing Avalonia's original geographic position and its subsequent convergence with North America.

Dagda by Andrew Hinkinson-Hodnett I wrote the first version of my poem Dagda back in October 2004, and the verses were shortly afterwards used in casting a sacred circle to invoke the male aspect of the Divine. Dagda is an Old God, an important figure in Irish mythology and a High King of the Tuatha Dé Danann. He is important to many Pagan paths including Druidry. Dagda is sometimes connected in people’s minds to the Green Man whose face adorns old churches, and while there appears to be no evidence I can find to confirm that link as real it is nevertheless one that I myself intuitively make. The version of the poem I present to you today was extensively revised just as a gloriously hot pink and baby blue dawn broke on this very morning in 2009. I only realised when the reworking was finished that it is exactly five years and two months after the original was committed to paper. I hope you enjoy reading, and feel free to make use of the poem in your own ritual invocations (but as ever please acknowledge the poet’s copyright, and do not republish anywhere else). The image above is the Dagda on the Gundestrup Cauldron, courtesy of Wiki. You can read more from Andy on his fascinating blog and poetry site, The Spicy Cauldon. Promo - Digital Magic by Philippa Ballantine Digital Magic is the sequel to Chasing the Bard- the award winning podcast novel–written by New Zealand author Philippa Ballantine. "Penherem is a quaint, sleepy English village where people go to escape the 21st Century. Hiding from the world of laptop computers, the Internet, and wireless communication, is Ella. A writer, now barren of ideas and drive, she resigns herself to a quiet life of solitude. Everything changes with the arrival of a shapeshifting thief. Suddenly, everyone begins to change–from the local librarian to the lady of the manor–revealing their true natures and dangerous secrets. Something in this sleepy English village is awakening… something that might be better left alone." You can follow the Digital Magic blog or subscribe to the podcast. You can also find the podcast in iTunes. The story is also available in print form. Nines by The Pentacle Drummers "The Pentacle Drummers' livery has always been green and red. Our tatter coats and face paint help lend a theatrical touch to events. Sometimes it seems that we live our 'Life in Tatters'. At the Herstmonceux and Michelham Priory Medieval Festivals we enter into the spirit of the events by adopting full medieval attire. At bonfires we adopt a much darker look. You will recognise us by our more sombre black gothic costumes and makeup, some wicked hats and a plethora of glowsticks." Visions of the Cailleach by Sorita d'Este and David Rankine Standing astride the British landscape, looms the giant blue form of the Cailleach. Whether she is seen as a benevolent earth-shaping giantess, harsh winter hag goddess, shape-shifting crone, guardian of sacred wells and animals, or ancient bestower of sovereignty; the Cailleach appears in many roles and manifestations in myths and legends across the British Isles. Tracking the Cailleach across thousands of years through folklore, literature and place names, the authors have uncovered startling references which hint at a hidden priestess cult worshipping the Cailleach from ancient times through into the twentieth century. By exploring her myths and legends, they demonstrate the hugely significant role of the Cailleach in the early history of the British Isles. Beinn na Caillich and Goir a' Bhlair - the seat of the Cailleach Looking beyond the veil of the sacred landscape, the vision of the Cailleach confronts the seeker, in hills and rocks, lakes and wells, burial chambers and stormy skies. Now finally the primal elemental power of the Cailleach is revealed in her full glory, in the tales and places of Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man; as well as in traces of her presence in England, Wales, Jersey, Brittany, Spain and Norway. The Pattern by Willson & McKee The Pattern is a poem that Kim wrote after her first trip to Ireland and hearing about the myths and legends of the Women knitting a pattern in her husband and sons sweaters to identify them if they were lost at sea and then recovered later. You can find out more about the Standing With Stones documentarty on the DVD website. Tribal Gathering by Keltoria Keltoria is a Celtic music “group” based in the Knockmealdown Mountains of South Tipperary in Ireland. Keltoria music is a hybrid of powerful, elemental traditional Celtic and New Age styles that is pretty unique. Powerful and Elemental are the key words here. Driven by thundering rhythms and frantic strings, this is not for the faint hearted. A combination of haunting, gothic/celtic atmospheres and thundering rhythms creates a music that is “spiritual” in the sense of the raw power of nature. This is music to make your spirit jump up and fling itself about in wild, whirling abandon. More than that, we'd like to offer a heart-felt thank you to the band for giving us unlimited access to their music for the Show. They are amazing people. You can find out more about the Keltoria on their website or on their Contributor Page. Melvyn Bragg and guests Richard Corfield, Jane Francis and Sanjeev Gupta discuss the geological formation of Britain.Around 600 million years ago the island that we now call Britain was in two parts, far to the south of the Equator. Scotland and north-western Ireland were part of a continent (Laurentia) that also included what is now North America. To the south-east, near the Antarctic Circle, meanwhile, you would have found southern Ireland, England and Wales. They formed a mini-continent (Avalonia) with what is now Newfoundland.Over the course of hundreds of millions of years, as they inched their way north, the two parts came together - first as part of a vast unitary continent (Pangaea), later as a promontory on the edge of Europe, and eventually, as sea levels rose, as an island. The story of how Britain came to be where it is now, in its current shape - from the separation of North America and Europe to the carving out of the English Channel - is still being uncovered today.Richard Corfield is Visiting Senior Resarch Fellow at Oxford University; Jane Francis is Professor of Palaeoclimatology at the University of Leeds; Sanjeev Gupta is a Royal Society-Leverhulme Trust Research Fellow at Imperial College London.

Cernunnos & the Gundestrup Cauldron The Gundestrup cauldron is a richly decorated silver vessel, thought to date from between 200 BC and 300 AD, or more narrowly between 150 BC and 1 BC. This places it within the late La Tène period or early Roman Iron Age. The cauldron is the largest known example of European Iron Age silver work. For more information, consult the Wiki page for the Cauldron. The Children of Lir by Sora Sora (aka Andrea Hunt) is an independent musician with a different philosophy on how she wants to share her music with the world. Perhaps it was all of the touring she did as a teenager with the Calgary Youth Orchestra and the Calgary Fiddlers that made her appreciate the subtleties of having a solid home base. It may have been the influence of playing with elite musicians and performing to sell out crowds that seeded her desire to mold a new musical lifestyle. Her natural flair for Celtic vocal styling leaps out in her 2003 debut CD “Winds Of Change”. On this self produced project all 13 tracks were recorded live off the floor. “What you hear is what we did” Sora says. “Everyone was in the same small room at the same time”. The arrangements for each song were chosen specifically because they were so different from anything she had ever heard – which gave her the chance to put her heart and sound into each track. You can find her music on Myspace or Corvid Media. You can find out more details about Sora on her Contributor Page on our website. Children of Lir When on feathered wings take flight 'Oer the hills beating the time To the swans final song Sung so sweet, so for so long As they leave rocky shore Flying west with the sun And I watch from the land I love My past come undone Oh Children of Lir where have you gone? The hills they are bare but echo your song Echo your song The stones silently fall And where do I belong? On the hollow faerie mound The silence calls mocking the time When the swans haunting song Carried far, resounding strong And their stories they drift Upon stormy seas Lost in the waves of time The island, it is me Oh Children of Lir where have you gone? The hills they are bare but echo your song Echo your song The stones silently fall And where do I belong? When the bells so loudly toll An anthem rung drowing the sound To the swans final song Silver notes, fading, withdrawn Change swiftly comes On the wings of the dove The voices once heard are gone Where are they love? Oh Children of Lir where have you gone? The hills they are bare but echo your song Echo your song Oh Children of Lir where have you gone? The hills they are bare but echo your song Echo your song The stones silently fall And where do I belong? Do I belong? Beara, Queen of Alba by Andy Guthrie We are incredibly privileged to have Andy as a Contributor to the show. He tells stories that are alive in his family today and that have come down through the ages. He says: The old Legends are a passion and a Joy, and the writings of Fiona Macleod are inspiration, in all I do. I have been a Head gardener of 31 years for large house, and sill working, I see the years come and go from spring to winner, and love it all. I retell the old stories. Promo - Searching for my Wives William Bostock Searching For My Wives by William Bostock Imagine how it all began, this marvelous, long journey of Humanity. Some souls work for peace and happiness. Others, though, despoil, degrade, and kill. This is a novel of past lives, reincarnation, and our occult history. Not many protohumans were alive, one and one-half million years ago, but all of us had souls, and souls persist, and there are souls which lived in hominids in Chesowanja, eastern Africa who have lived among us almost to the present day. Shimmer loves his wives, Sita and Ahalya, and tries to share sweet lives with them, but the trickster Murk, intent on dragging Mankind down, drives black souls to attack the ones who love. Come along as Shimmer leads migrations. Relive the waning of the Great Ice Age and the planetwide disaster. And remember how Old Kingdom Egypt travelled through a pleat in time to stabilize and rule the river plains of northern India. Re-experience Murk's dark campaign to undermine that peaceful land, and once again respond to Shimmer and Old Shiver's call to arms and meet the enemy between two rivers at fabled Kurukshetra.
