A near-collision occurred at Chicago's Midway Airport when a Southwest flight was forced to abort its landing to avoid a private jet that had entered the runway without authorization. The FAA is investigating the incident, while Flexjet, the private jet service, has stated that it will conduct its own investigation. This event is part of a series of recent aviation mishaps, including smoke-related incidents on Delta flights and a Delta flight flipping over during landing in Toronto. In addition, there were fatal plane crashes last month. These incidents have increased anxiety among fliers, prompting flight crews to reassure passengers.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
//The Wire// 2100Z November 18, 2024////PRIORITY////BLUF: TWO UNDERSEA CABLES REPORTEDLY CUT IN THE BALTIC. U.S. AUTHORIZES UKRAINIAN USE OF LONG-RANGE MISSILES IN RUSSIA. BRITISH AIRWAYS AIRCRAFT GROUNDED THROUGHOUT EUROPE DUE TO CYBER EVENT.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Baltic Sea: This morning Finnish news media reported that the C-LION1 undersea communications cable has been cut. This cable provides internet and data connections between Finland and Germany. No official cause for the severed connection has been provided yet.Separately, the Telia Company (an internet provider throughout the region) reported that one of their undersea cables has also been cut and/or damaged. The Telia cable providing internet connection to Lithuania from Finland was reportedly taken offline Sunday morning, with two additional secondary and tertiary backup cables allowing for some connectivity to Lithuania, albeit with a reduced bandwidth.AC: Though the context of the heightened international tensions must be considered, undersea communications cables are frequently damaged and/or cut by innocent mistakes such as ships dragging anchor, or even purely natural incidents such as underwater mudslides. However, with two separate cables being impacted, the likelihood of nefarious intent becomes substantial. Most fingers point to Russia anyway, as Russia has a long-standing military mission to sever communications cables in the event of war. The United States has a similar mission as well, so pointing fingers is unlikely to do any good, especially due to the nature of the incident not exactly allowing for independent analysis. The intentional cutting of cables (or even the damaging of cables that is assumed to be nefarious in nature) is usually considered to be a prelude to a war involving the United States and Russia. However, considering the very few solid details (and going out on a limb to a degree), it's possible that this is Russia's way of showing their displeasure of the United States escalating the war in Ukraine. The Pentagon grants Ukraine permission to use long-range munitions, and Putin cuts a cable or two to show the west that, for them, the war is not merely confined to the borders of Ukraine.Europe: This afternoon British Airways reported a major cyber outage, resulting in a grounding of all of their aircraft throughout the continent. Early reports suggest this outage impacted pilots' abilities to electronically file flight plans and/or load sheets. The cause of the IT outage has not yet been disclosed, and it is not clear as to if British Airways is the only airline to be affected, though this remains a developing situation.-HomeFront-Texas: Friday evening Southwest Flight 2494 was struck by small arms fire while preparing to depart Dallas Love Field Airport. Few details have been released following this incident, however at least one bullet struck the front of the aircraft near the cockpit. No injuries were reported. AC: It's not clear as to if this was an intentional targeting effort, or the byproduct of a random shooting outside the airport perimeter that just so happened to strike an aircraft. As the layout of the facility provides clear line of sight to aircraft taxiing throughout the airport from multiple angles, a person near the perimeter of the airport could have engaged any number of aircraft. It's also not clear as to if other airlines at the airport conducted inspections of their own aircraft after the incident.Washington D.C – Over the weekend (as previously mentioned), the Biden regime has decided to allow the use of long-range munitions by Ukraine to strike targets deep inside Russia. Previously, Ukraine was allegedly prevented from doing so as a means to prevent the further escalation of the war, and to side-step Russia's previous rhetoric on this exact issue. A few weeks ago, Putin altered Russia's formalized nucle

Hour 2 - The eclipse conspiracies are running rampant on social media. A Southwest flight leaving DIA had an engine part fall off the plane and hit part of the wing. Morgan Wallen was arrested a released on bail after throwing a chair off a balcony at a bar in Nashville.
A Southwest Airlines flight, destined for Houston, stirred unease among its passengers on Sunday, when one of its engines - a significant component on the Boeing 737-800 - demonstrated signs of damage during the flight. The aircraft promptly turned back to Denver when the crew discovered a detachable metal component of the engine had separated during its ascent. A chilling clip circulated by ABC's lead transportation journalist, Sam Sweeney, shows the metal engine cover flapping perilously as it separated from its place. The incident witnessed by the passengers involved an engine of the Southwest Airlines jet rupturing during the takeoff. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) clarified through an announcement that an engine cowling, a part of the aircraft, had broken away and hit one of the wing flaps of the aircraft. When contacted, a representative from Southwest, via email correspondence, informed The Post that this incident stemmed from a 'mechanical issue.' The Southwest Flight 3695 safely touched down at Denver International Airport due to the arisen complications from this malfunction. The concerned Southwest spokesperson conveyed to The Post that the travelers on the affected flight would reach Houston Hobby via an alternate aircraft, but with an approximate delay of three hours. The flight had taken its initial departure from Denver International Airport at around 7:49 a.m. local timing, intended for William P. Hobby Airport in Houston. Barely 25 minutes into the flight, the pilots had to bring the aircraft back to Denver, making a secure landing at 8:14 a.m., after which the plane was pulled to the gate. Currently, the FAA is conducting a thorough investigation into the occurrence. The issue today adds to an increasingly worrying series of safety concerns that have been incessantly hounding the aerospace behemoth throughout the year 2024. This comes on the heels of CEO Dave Calhoun's recent announcement that he will be resigning from his role by the end of this year.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Mental health in aviation is a critical issue affecting pilots and the entire aviation ecosystem. The high-pressure environment, long hours, irregular schedules, and extended periods away from home can cause significant stress on pilots, leading to mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and burnout. There is limited research on mental health issues among pilots, but studies suggest that pilots may be at higher risk than the general population. Here are some statistics based on available research:A survey of 1,848 commercial pilots in 2015 found that 4.1% of respondents reported having suicidal thoughts within the previous two weeks, compared to 3.7% of adults in the general population. The same survey found that 12.6% of pilots reported experiencing symptoms of depression, compared to 7.1% of adults in the general population.A 2017 study of 2,500 pilots in the United States found that 29% of respondents had experienced symptoms of depression within the previous two weeks, and 4.1% had experienced suicidal thoughts within the last two weeks. The same study found that 12.6% of respondents had been diagnosed with depression at some point, and 4.1% had been diagnosed with a personality disorder. It's important to note that these statistics are based on self-reported data and may not reflect the full extent of mental health issues among pilots. The industry has traditionally taken a reactive approach to mental health, addressing it only after an incident or accident. However, we do see improvements with airlines and aviation regulatory bodies implementing more proactive measures to prevent and manage mental health issues among pilots. One such measure is the implementation of peer-support programs that allow pilots to confidentially share their concerns with other pilots who have undergone similar experiences. Additionally, airlines provide mental health resources and training to pilots, including access to mental health professionals and stress management techniques. The FAA has also implemented regulations that require pilots to disclose their mental health status to their employers and undergo regular mental health assessments. These regulations aim to detect and manage mental health issues early and prevent them from escalating into more severe problems. But as pilots know, losing your medical can cost you a great deal of time, money, resources, and sometimes your job."Pilots believe that being vulnerable, and sharing feelings or struggles, such as anxiety, depression, and chronic stress, would be at best humiliating or embarrassing, and, at worst, the end of their flying career."Reyne O'Shaughnessy, a retired airline pilot and author of "This Is Your Captain Speaking," shared in a recent interview. Captain Reyne was featured on an AVIATE roundtable last year, focusing on mental health in aviation. Each season, I intentionally dedicate an episode to discussing mental health in aviation. When I read about Tammy Jo Shults, a retired Navy fighter pilot and commercial airline pilot who grew up on a ranch in Texas, I immediately knew she would be an influential guest on this podcast. When I further learned Tammie Jo's story and how she gained national recognition for safely landing Southwest Airlines Flight 1380 after an engine failure in April 2018, I invited her to share her story and anchor our conversation around mental health.Shults was one of the first female fighter pilots in the U.S. Navy and flew the F/A-18 Hornet in combat operations during Operation Desert Storm. She later became a commercial airline pilot and joined Southwest Airlines in 1993, where she continued to fly until her retirement in 2020. Shults' skill and composure during the emergency landing of Flight 1380 were widely praised and credited with saving the lives of the passengers and crew on board.Tammie Jo, welcome!

Special guest Darren Ellisor: Darren Ellisor is a Captain at SouthwestAirlines with over 11,000 flying hours. He started flying for Southwest in 2008 after serving more than 10 years in the active-duty Air Force. Darren graduated from the US Air Force Academy in 1997. In the Air Force he flew multiple versions of the Boeing707, accumulating the majority of his time in the E-3 AWACS as an Instructor and Evaluator Pilot. In the E-3, he flew numerous Combat Support flights during Operation NOBLE EAGLE and during middle east deployments for Operation NORTHERN WATCH, Operation SOUTHERN WATCH, and counter-drug operations. During tours at Tinker AFB, OK and Geilenkirchen NATO Airbase, Germany, Darren worked as Squadron Chief of Standardization and Evaluation, as well as Squadron Chief of Flight Safety. He was named Pilot of the Year at Geilenkirchen in 2004. On April 17, 2018, Darren was flying with Captain Tammie Jo Shults from LaGuardia to Dallas-Love on Southwest Airlines Flight 1380. Climbing through 32,500 feet, the number one engine exploded, causing shrapnel to damage much of the left wing and a passenger window to blow out. The aircraft banked more than 41 degrees to the left and experienced extreme aircraft vibration, hydraulic malfunctions, and an explosive decompression of the cabin. Darren, who was flying the aircraft at the time, recovered from the ensuing unusual attitude and started a descent. He worked alongside Captain Shults and their flight attendants Rachel Fernheimer, Kathryn Sandoval, and Seanique Mallory to safely make an emergency landing of the crippled jet at Philadelphia International airport—saving 148 lives. One passenger was unfortunately killed in the accident. In his free time, Darren has volunteered as a Cub Scout Pack Leader and as a Little League baseball coach. Darren and his wife, Jennifer, live in League City with their four children.

On this Episode of Wrighster or Wrong, George Wrighster and Ralph Amsden discuss the Lakers being eliminated from the 2021-2022 NBA Playoffs at the hands of the Phoenix Suns. George argues that the Suns are focused on the Lakers and that will be their downfall, while Ralph tap dances on the Purple and Gold grave. Next up, George has given up on trying to get his kids to dress the way he wants them to, and the guys commiserate on picking and choosing your fashion-based battles as parents. The Athltic dropped an article with anonymous coach quotes about their weirdest recruiting experiences, and George attempts to guess which coach "blew up" a recruit's bathroom. The latest JD Vance campaign add seems to be gleefully appealing to racists, and the guys talk about how this commercial is both dangerous and disingenuous. Finally, George surprises Ralph with a story about a man who makes a few terrible decisions on a flight from Seattle to Phoenix. #fsrweekends See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Captain Tammie Jo Shults is an American commercial airline captain, author, inspirational speaker, and naval aviator. Known for being one of the first female fighter pilots to serve in the United States Navy, active-duty Captain Shults became a pilot for Southwest Airlines. On April 17, 2018, as captain of Southwest Airlines Flight 1380, she safely landed a Boeing 737-700 after the aircraft suffered an uncontained engine failure with debris causing rapid decompression of the plane. She saved 148 lives that day. In Captain Shults' memoir “Nerves of Steel,' she shares her story from growing up as the daughter of a humble rancher to breaking gender barriers and receiving wings of gold to managing compound emergencies in landing Southwest Flight 1380 and revealing insight into true heroism. Captain Shults holds a split degree in PreMed and Agribusiness from MidAmerica Nazarene and is a Women In Aviation Advisory Board member working to empower women, especially young women, worldwide and at home. Today, we discuss Tammie Jo's “Nerves of Steel,” her experiences in the Navy, being one of the first women to fly an FA-18 Hornet and the flight in 2018 that changed her life.
