Today, we are going back in time; let's rewind the clock to 1969, the year the world got slightly brighter—because Jen and I came into being. But hold on tight because we're about to dive into the scene's heart. A place where the music's alive, the air's thick with good vibes, and the soul just flows. We're talking about The Scene, man. Now we meet Steve Paul, the cool cat that operates The Scene, and let me tell ya, this joint on West 46th Street in the Big Apple is where at. Every night, you'll find the grooviest cats in town—hippies, musicians, artists, and just free spirits all jammin' out together, sharing a little bit of magic, and yeah, passing around that sweet, sweet devil's lettuce.By February 2003, the glory days of the once vibrant nightlife hub and gritty hustle had long since faded into the past. The building's remaining tenants—sex workers, drug users, and the forgotten souls of the neighborhood kept a few apartments in the building. The storefronts, once home to The Scene, had cycled through several different faces since its closure: a pornographic video shop, a seedy dive bar, and now, a restaurant eager to convert the basement into a walk-in freezer. Demolition made way for a shiny new Riu Hotel, which was not completed until 2016. On February 10th, construction workers stumbled upon something strange while tearing down what was left. Behind an aging coal furnace in the basement, they noticed a raised concrete slab six feet wide, five feet long, and about a foot high. One worker took a sledgehammer and struck the slab. Once he was inside, a human skull rolled out of its resting place.Join Jen and Cam of Our True Crime Podcast on this episode entitled ‘Buried for Decades: Discovery of Midtown Jane Doe.'Listener Discretion is by @octoberpodVHSAll music is by our editor @theinkypawprintSources:https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-features/true-crime-mystery-murder-the-scene-new-york-1235156741/https://people.com/midtown-jane-doe-new-york-woman-identified-patricia-kathleen-mcglone-8641422https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=434347589384178&id=100064771266307https://nypost.com/2024/04/28/us-news/midtown-jane-doe-finally-idd-20-years-after-remains-found-cemented-in-former-nyc-hot-spot/https://vocal.media/criminal/midtown-jane-doe-identified-after-50-years-using-dnahttps://www.reddit.com/r/UnresolvedMysteries/comments/1cfjvaq/midtown_jane_doe_2003_identified_as_16yearold/https://www.facebook.com/FOX5NY/videos/who-was-midtown-jane-doe/3012225785594168/https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2024/04/30/patricia-kathleen-mcglone-midtown-jane-doe-cold-case/73515200007/https://www.cbsnews.com/news/patricia-mcglone-midtown-jane-doe-murder-victim-identified-cold-case-dna-911-victim-nypd/https://r.search.yahoo.com/_ylt=AwrFY0w.4Npn3Gwj.gYPxQt.;_ylu=Y29sbwNiZjEEcG9zAzIEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3Ny/RV=2/RE=1742426302/RO=10/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.cnn.com%2f2024%2f05%2f01%2fus%2fmidtown-jane-doe-death-ring-cec%2findex.html/RK=2/RS=EJ_.ELaYzd69r4SyrsnD98NHxmk-https://www.doenetwork.org/closed/articles/337UFNY_article.pdf

There is the accepted, often-repeated version of Christian history—and then there's the real story. In this podcast, Michael interviews author Steve Paul on his book that helps people learn little-known details of the world's largest faith and helps them differentiate between Jesus' teachings and institutional religion. Steve's extensive research of Christian history, once simply called "The Timeline," was often cited in Michael's first two books. Meet the man behind that study and learn how he started his journey to search for meaning through the study of history. Paul's book is an excellent source for any student or lover of history or anyone who is rethinking or deconstructing evangelical or fundamentalist Christianity. Don't miss this fascinating conversation. As Steve Paul says, to understand Christian history is to unearth the roots of our current divisive American culture—and hopefully find the tools to fix it in order to grow into a more cooperative society. After listening, find out more and get the book at insearchofchristianorigins.com. The website includes a handy Index for each century and maps that track Christian expansion through the centuries.

In this episode we welcome the excellent Devon Powers — beamed in from Philadelphia — and ask her to talk about The Village Voice, Red Hot Chili Peppers, the White Stripes… and music journalism since the turn of the century. Devon begins by talking about the music she loved when growing up in her native Michigan — and her first awareness of "rock critics". We hear about her move to New York City in 1999, her early pieces for the PopMatters site, and the Anglophilia that led to umpteen pieces about the likes of Clinic, Starsailor, Badly Drawn Boy and, yes, even Ocean Colour Scene. Citing a great 2003 piece she wrote about Red Hot Chili Peppers, who released a new album the week of this recording, we ask Devon what those punk-funk Californicators meant to her in the '90s and noughties. After a brief discussion of Devon's 2004 thinkpiece 'Is Music Journalism Dead?', we turn our attention to Writing the Record: The Village Voice and the Birth of Rock Criticism, the 2013 book which came out of her doctoral dissertation at NYU. She talks about the vital New York weekly paper, and the "rock critics" who were such a key part of its arts coverage — particularly Richard Goldstein, several of whose '60s Voice pieces we have on RBP. We then pay tribute to another Voice contributor, John Swenson, lost to us a few days before this recording, as well as to Foo Fighter Taylor Hawkins and Mighty Diamonds frontman "Tabby" Shaw. Two clips from Ira Robbins' 2001 audio interview with the White Stripes prompt a general chinwag about Jack, Meg, blues etc., after which Mark zips through the most notable of the interviews & reviews he's just added to the RBP library, including pieces about the Kingston Trio, Paul Revere & the Raiders, Canned Heat and Teddy Pendergrass. Barney then rounds things off by flagging up pieces on Marc Bolan, the Prodigy, Tony Hatch, Jack Good and the Descendents. Many thanks to special guest Devon Powers; visit her website at devonpowers.com and find Writing the Record in all good bookshops. The Rock's Backpages podcast is proud to be part of the Pantheon podcast network. Pieces discussed: The Village Voice and the Birth of Rock Criticism, PJ Harvey, Is Music Journalism Dead?, Red Hot Chili Peppers audio, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Rick Rubin, The White Stripes audio, Taylor Hawkins audio, Foo Fighters, Crawdaddy, The Mighty Diamonds, Alexis Korner, Paul Revere, Disco, Teddy Pendergrass, Little Richard, Steve Paul, Canned Heat, Curtis Mayfield, Oasis, Marc Bolan audio, The Prodigy, Tony Hatch, Jack Good and the Descendents. Joni's request to follow Neil Young's lead and have Blue and other albums removed from Spotify prompts discussion of the streaming platform's headaches in the wake of Joe Rogan's COVID disinformation.Another of Kate's Statesman pieces, about Lou Reed, gives her and co-hosts Mark & Barney the perfect excuse to riff on Reed's notoriously sadistic treatment of British interviewers — and the cue for Mark to talk about Martin Aston's 1989 audio interview with the ex-Velvets man. From there we turn to Lou's fellow contrarian Morrissey and the "severed alliance" between him and former Smiths bandmate Johnny Marr. With the latter releasing a new album this month, Kate and the RBP crew reflect on the very different personalities (and values) of the two Mancunians. After noting the passing of folk matriarch Norma Waterson, Mark references recently-added library pieces about Sam Cooke, Todd Rundgren and the late Janice Long. Jasper then finishes things off with observations on pieces about Glass Animals and Adele. Many thanks to special guest Kate Mossman; find her writing in the New Statesman and on RBP.Pieces discussed: Jazz fusion, Carey Raditz, Lou Reed, Lou Reed audio, Johnny Marr, the Smiths, Morrissey, Norma Waterson, Sam Cooke, Scott Walker, Steve Paul, Nona Hendryx, Vicki Wickham, Black Sabbath, Todd Rundgren, Janice Long, Laura Barton's heckler's guide, Glass Animals and Adele.

In the first half of our discussion, we're joined by Andrew Theising, author of Hemingway's Saint Louis: How St. Louisans Shaped His Life and Legacy, to understand more about the city's history, its arts & culture, and a vast array of St. Louisans, including Hemingway's first three wives. 250 miles away, we pick up with the story of Kansas City. Welcome to episode number 5. In this episode number Bobby talks about under rated groups in this 2 part series. These are groups will airplay that lacked worldwide recognition. The first group is Humble Pie. The second group is called Raven, a blues rock band from Buffalo, New York. Bobby talks about Jim Hendrix and hearing this group at Steve Paul's Scene in NYC. Another group that had airplay but not achieving acclaim is a group called The Critters. YouTube has several videos that confirm the talent in this 60s band. Group number four is an English band called Soft Machine, the forefront of the progressive movement. Soft Machine toured and opened for Jimi Hendrix in 1968. Another group Bobby talks about is the American group, The Knickerbockers. They were signed and recorded the song “Lies” a very Beatles sounding tune. Various YouTube versions are available, including instrumental versions. Moving to San Francisco, Bobby talks about the group Moby Grape, an American group that was hard to categorize. Strong lead vocals, signed by Columbia in 1967. In “The Captains Corner” Bobby takes questions from listeners. This weeks question is: Who Did Captain Beyond Play With At The Hollywood Bowl. Did Johnny Winter sit in with the band? That concludes the episode number 5 of the 2 part series about under-rated bands. Episode number six will continue with more insight and information from Bobby Caldwell with The Captain.

In this episode, Heather speaks to Steve Paul about his leadership philosophy. He shares a story that greatly impacted his style of leading himself and others. They discuss past challenges and how he was able to land in a positive place with his team members. He admitted that his guiding force resides in his faith. Steve Paul, a longtime friend of mine, but I’ve known him as a leader. He’s also a previous client. The reason why I’ve invited him on here is because I’ve seen over the years, number one, his growth, but also the fact that he has what a lot of leaders have–that internal struggle with trying to lead with heart, trying to get the most of their people, but he has this really keen awareness of where it is that he may be falling short, and he also has this deep desire to try to get better. So that is what leadership with heart is all about.

It'll be really useful to track all the trends in our industry... have our rates gone up or what do we need to buy to stay competitive? So if you completed the survey last year or even a newcomer, it would be great to get as many responses as possible. It only takes a couple of minutes and we'll share all the results with you early next year. The Great ExtraShot Cameraman Survey - Why not do it now? We hope you all have a great Xmas and prosperous 2016.
