Wilfred Blanch Talman is an American Horror fiction writer best known for his collaboration with Howard Phillips Lovecraft on the short story, "Two Black Bottles", which was published in Weird Tales in August 1927 and credited solely to Talman. Paula Talman experienced difficulties growing up in Ireland, where she struggled with her school work and was corrected and criticised to the point that she feared going to school. But voluntary work at her local hospital exposed her to an industry where she was able to thrive. With her natural Irish chattiness – the gift of the gab that comes from kissing the Blarney Stone – she began speaking to lonely patients who had suffered serious injuries. Getting to know these patients, giving them a connection and allowing them to express their fears had a profound effect on their mental health and in turn helped them with their recovery. This fuelled a passion in Paula for engaging with people and helping them to get better, and she went on to study both paediatric and adult nursing. As part of her studies, she delved deeper into the mental services available to children, finding that staff lacked the knowledge, the skills and the tools to offer effective support. Wanting to change this, she moved into education, working in the medical department of a school and teaching the PSHE curriculum. In this role Paula explored the inadequacies of how children are taught about mental health and began devising her own methods of making it easier to understand. She moved away from words like ‘depression' and ‘anxiety', developing more suitable terminology and creating relatable characters that allow children to talk through scenarios. This simplified curriculum was the basis of her company iSpace Wellbeing, which helps school to teach their pupils how to verbalise thoughts and feelings, and develop self-awareness from a young age. Paula's is a fascinating story and she spins a heart-warming yarn of her time spent on children's wards and working with terminally ill patients. These stories, and her experience of caring for patients in a way that improved their mental health, serve to show us how we can take more time to make a connection with others and how it can help to improve their physical health. Monster Kid Radio's Derek Koch makes his belated return to the show so that we can finally wrap up our multipart series on William Castle westerns of the 1950's! It certainly took us long enough, huh? Without us realizing it this episode could have been labeled a Patricia Medina double feature! But are these last two movies actually westerns? Listen and find out.  DUEL ON THE MISSISSIPPI (1955) is close since it takes place in 1820's Louisiana and it involves a duel with pistols. But it is really much more a plantation adventure with river pirates stealing sugarcane and a romantic plotline that is more than obvious from the beginning. It's a colorful widescreen tale filled with bad guys, a sort-of bad girl and a fair amount of time spent on a riverboat. The cast is uniformly excellent with easily a dozen faces familiar to fans of older movies with Lex Barker and Miss Medina leading the dance. We spend a good deal of time discussing her career and marveling at her range.  URANIUM BOOM (1956) is a much more modern tale focused on the men swarming through Colorado in the 1950's as part of the rush to find the titular radioactive ore. Dennis Morgan and William Talman become partners in search of riches but run into trouble when they realize they are in love with the same woman. The film becomes a darker tale than expected with these two men fighting to control their mining operation and with Talman's character pulling some downright nasty tricks to break up his buddy's marriage. Lady P, Martin Kessler, and Marya E. Gates continue the "A Year With Women" series with a special "Noirvember" episode. In today's Flixwise Favorites entry, the panel peers into the shadows that line the deserted highways in Ida Lupino's THE HITCH-HIKER. The film takes the viewer on a harrowing ride through the Baja California desert, as a pair of unassuming middle aged men are kidnapped by a wanted murderer and forced to help him flee the authorities. THE HITCH-HIKER is loaded with noir tropes: desolate landscapes, expressionist lighting, a creeping sense of dread, etc. However, there are lots of ways that the film breaks with custom and starts veering into other genres. The panelists talk about the ways that Lupino plays with noir conventions, as well as her depiction of post-WWII masculinity, and the way she uses Mexico to symbolize both exoticism and foreboding. Then, they also have a lengthy discussion about how THE HITCH-HIKER compares to Lupino's other great, but less-widely-seen noir, THE BIGAMIST.
