Erin McElroy is back to talk about fresh release "Silicon Valley Imperialism." Starting in the 2010s, the post-socialist Romanian government created special visas to attract tech corporations and digital nomads. They hoped to create a mini-San Francisco; the book looks at how that materialized. Today I speak with two of the Trillbillies, specifically Tom Sexton and Tarence Ray. We discuss many aspects of esoteric Kentucky, like the word itself and the other name settlers picked out for the land, as well as the Indian mounds. Then we discuss the economics of Ashland Kentucky which might explain some of the high strangeness that's occurred there, from massacres to mafia coal companies to Charlie Manson. Then we discuss the history of Kentucky and LSD, like with Captain Hubbard and Augustus Owsley Stanley III, two of the main LSD gurus and both native sons. Then, we discuss the history of LSD and MKULTRA experiments in Kentucky, which leads us to discuss the Kentucky blue bloods and high society in Lexington. From there, we get into the Bluegrass Conspiracy, with former Lexington PD narcotics task force officer Andrew Thornton III falling to his death strapped with 40 kilos of cocaine. This ties into Lexington high society, but also international crime, the CIA, Adnan Khashoggi, and Thornton's paramilitary terrorist training camp in Kentucky. To wrap it up, we talk about Kentucky's first UFO incident.

In the first episode with Tom Sexton, he realised that he needed to have difficult conversations with his daughters to make sure they knew what he was feeling, and for him to hear what they needed to say. In this second episode, Tom discusses how those conversations with his daughters went and how his entire family reacted to the initial podcast. Tom shares how he hopes to improve his speaking and listening skills and why it's so important to put meaning behind the words he says, and if the meaning doesn't come across, making sure it comes across by having deeper conversations. You'll hear how you can grow and recover from major arguments and why you need to be in a constant growth mindset, no matter how old you are or how far into a relationship you are. You'll also hear why the sprinkler IS a dance move and how Tom HAS perfected it. What does it feel like to have the full, diverse spectrum of your political concerns reduced to a single issue? Briahna takes on the media and political establishment's habit of essentializing voters from two different angles. First, she talks to the Analilia Mejia, the campaign's national political director, about why Bernie's agenda appeals to Latinx voters in part because of its holistic approach. Then, Tom Sexton of the Trillbilly Worker's Party podcast explains why the notion of "Trump country" doesn't even begin to explain the perspectives of Appalachian communities. We chat with Rick Sturgill, a retired coal miner and electrician from Letcher County in South East Kentucky. Rick is a straight shooter, he calls things like he sees them. And, having spent most of his life around coal, he has a lot of sobering things to say about working in coal and about the far-reaching effects the coal industry has had on cities and towns in Appalachia, on politics and the environment, and especially on the lives of coal miners and their families. Functional Family Therapy is an evidence based response to conduct disorder in adolescents. When Robert Barnoski of the Washington State Institute for Public Policy studied the programme he found that, on average, fidelity to the model matters. But there were exceptions. Some practitioners who did it their own way got good scores. Others who did it by the book got bad scores. Tom Sexton is one of the developers of the Functional Family Therapy model. Donald Forrester has been a pioneer in bringing good quality research to bear on social work. They discuss Robert Barnoki's findings, and their implications for public policy. This was supposed to be a bonus episode, but it's too good to not be available for all! We talk to the Trillbillies Workers' Party about their podcast, one of the top ten Left podcasts to come out of Appalachia. Based out of Whitesburg, KY, Trillbillies Tanya Turner, Tom Sexton, and Tarence Ray blow J.D. Vance and his "Hillbillies Elegy" book out of the... coal mine... We talk to them about the white privilege that protects coal miners from the Black Lung which kills them, a homecoming welfare Queen AND King!, sex ed, pervie Marxist professors, and that one time Tom worked at the Clinton Foundation and had a heart to heart with Hillary Clinton's brother. Before that, Gabe and I go over the news, the Roger Stone documentary, and the time I saw Roger Stone, but didn't notice because I was too distracted by Alex Jones, who was waddling behind him. As you will see, there is a lot of REM in this episode. Coming soon: bonus content from this ep, which includes a discussion about J.D. Vance and the stupid racism vs. economic anxiety false dichotomy.
