It's time for our traditional, post-”Designing Women” season special episode! We're definitely planning to discuss season 7 after the holidays, but to tide you over, we're heading to Beverly Hills—Troop Beverly Hills, to be exact. If you haven't seen this 1989 gem starring Shelly Long in her peak, feathered-hair glory, you're in for a treat. This isn't just a movie—it's an adventure in over-the-top Scout uniforms, cookie sales drama, and a showdown with wilderness survival that's as hilarious as it is heartwarming. For us, it was a no-brainer: Carlene's Scout leader stint, our “Extra Sugar” on Girl Scouts, and our deep dive into Shelly Long's Cheers fame all screamed Troop Beverly Hills. So, if you're feeling nostalgic—or just need a good laugh between turkey leftovers and New Year's resolutions—join us. Grab some popcorn, snuggle up, and maybe consider bedazzling your own Scout sash. You know, for the vibes. We'll be back Designing Women-style after the New Year. Until then, happy holidays—and happy watching!

Les, Kurt, and Jason were gonna watch Moonlighting this week, but time constraints mean that will have to wait until the next episode (along with Les' lady detective fantasies). Instead, this week the guys dive into the Cheers spinoff that isn't Frasier (nor is it the Frasier re-boot on Paramount+), 1987's The Tortellis. But first, we find out about Kurt taking his mom to her midday mid-week high school reunion, mediocre chicken marsala and age shaming included! Plus, if you're going to be a doll, at least be one that people are afraid of! And, Blac Chyna is now doing appearances at Chiropractic offices in Orange County with her crispy bones! Then it's time to dive into The Tortellis, a Cheers spinoff that was launched in the very same season Cheers had to introduce Kirstie Alley after the departure of Shelly Long. The Tortellis was either a painfully unfunny spinoff, or one so painfully unfunny that the producers used it to keep the network off their back when it came to the mothership show. Not even a child that s**ts when he acts can save this from a guy who looks a little Megans List-y. But at least THIS didn't cause Jason to do ‘shrooms and pity follow Charo on YouTube. You read that title correctly, the second longest WGA strike is officially over! But as that ends, the SAG strike continues, and a SAG strike against the video game publishers looms. Meanwhile, final wrap ups from Tokyo Game Show, The Xbox Activision Deal is finally free to close, Jim Ryan is retiring from PlayStation, and Meta drops details about the Meta Quest 3. Elmore Leonard's cocky, energetic ATF Agent Ray Nicolet is a key protagonist in his book 'Rum Punch'. For Quentin Tarantino's film adaptation of 'Rum Punch', 'Jackie Brown', the character, now named "Ray Nicolette" was embodied by the brilliant Michael Keaton with a perfectly cocky, energetic physicality. While cinematic universes are commonplace nowadays, in 1997 it was a surprise to see the character appear, uncredited, in Steven Soderbergh's adaptation of Leonard's novel of the same name, and even more rewarding to get a couple of additional character dynamics revealed by Keaton's similarly smart and self-aware performance. In this episode, much as I did in Episode 157 with Paul Newman's scenes from 'The Verdict' and in Episode 152 with Sean Penn's Jeff Spicoli scenes from 'Fast Times'...I go through all of Keaton's scenes from 'Jackie Brown' and 'Out of Sight' and offer up full appreciation. Also: a quick look back at Keaton's first real starring performance in 'Night Shift' with Henry Winkler and Shelly Long.

Oh hai! This week's entry is a movie that: almost was directed by the same person as My Girl and the "that's a spicy meatball" commercial; almost starred Shelly Long, Burt Reynolds, Sam Kinison and didn't have Jon Lovitz; was co-written by Rosa Diaz and Adrian Pimento's favorite romcom screenwriter. Yuuuuup, it's Jumpin' Jack Flash (1986). Book Vs. Movie: Freaky FridayThe Mary Rogers Children's Classic Vs. the 1976 & 2003 Disney AdaptationsIn December (because we have covered just about every holiday-themed Christmas, New Year, Thanksgiving, and Hannukah film we can find)! The Margos turn our attention to all things Disney, and this year we begin with the classic Freaky Friday by Mary Rogers, which has been adapted a few times since its 1972 publication. Rogers, whose father was composer Richard Rogers, had a full career as a composer, screenwriter, and children's novelist with successes on stage like Once Upon a Mattress which ran on Broadway in 1959 and later toured the world. In 1972 she contributed to the Marlo Thomas album Free to Be You and Me (William's Doll) before completing Freaky Friday. The story of 13-year-old Annabel Andrews, who switches bodies with her mother only to discover being a parent is much harder than it looks. Annabell finds out her father is sexist and runs her mother ragged with demands on home life. Ultimately, she discovers that it was her mother the whole time who caused the body switch to show Annabel that she has her best interests in mind. The 1976 film stars Jodie Foster as Annabel and Barbara Harris as her mother, Ellen, with a screenplay by Rogers. One big difference is that the movie takes place in California versus New York City. Oh, and the racism casually featured in the book. (It's a big yikes there!) It was a huge hit that garnered several Golden Globes Awards nominations. In 1995, Shelly Long and Gaby Hoffman lead in the second adaptation. The 2003 film stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan and was a huge hit that is problematic today. So between them all--which did we like better? Amy introduced this week's topic by running through a brief history of remade music and movies. Amy then discussed some fun facts about the most remade movies and some epic flops of remade movies. For something different and because she had to leave midway through recording the episode we let Sarah go first this week. Sarah chose a couple of songs that she preferred the remake of instead of the originals. Sarah also declared her love for the movie Titanic made in 1997 which is far better than the original or any of the remakes of this movie (there are many). Face it, you cannot beat Dicaprio. Amy jumped back in at this point in the show to discuss a movie that she believed was better than the original. Amy's pick was the Stepford wives. The original was made in 1975 then remade in 2004. Amy like the remake better because she thought the equality between the genders discussion was better made in the re-make. Bianca finished us off by discussing the movie Freaky Friday and two of its remakes. The original film was made in 1976 and stars then child star Jodie Foster. The first remake Bianca discusses is the remake made in 1995 starring Shelly Long and Gabby Hoffman. The final remake Bianca discusses is the 2003 version starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis. In Bianca's opinion, both remakes are better than the original. We say it every week however, we really want to hear from our listeners. Les, Kurt and Jason try to delay the inevitable: talking about this week's Hallmark movie. Despite the presence of Queen Lacey Chabert, the guys would much rather discuss a Blac Chyna story involving a hitman as well as a long discussion of late 80's/early 90's first run syndication staples like Throb, What's Happening Now, Small Wonder and Shelly Long. When they DO talk about the movie, they find themself fascinated with grilling whilst bathing, John Grisham novels as porn, and the offensive stealing from (aka homage to) Back to the Future. My twin sister and I use our Virgo critical minds to analyze our favorite pop culture topics. We discuss Gwen Stefani, Beyonce, Britney, Janet Jackson, and Madonna. And then I pose the question, "Who is more of a goddess, Leslie Mann or Rita Wilson?" I also contemplate why everyone is so anti-Shelly Long. And finally, we play the casting game and select actresses best suited for a modern-day, mainstream Joan of Arc film. And food. There's always food to be discussed. To read more about this episode, visit "Geeking Out About Pop Culture With My Twin Sister." Before the team met Tom (aka Better is the Enemy), before “Alive or Dead,” before all the babies and weddings, we recorded in a conference room at work. We even had different intro music. We recorded “The Money Pit” and hoped we were ready to take it to the website. The audio is pretty bouncy and we had microphones in pencil cups on wool coasters.Speaking of “wool,” Shelly Long and pre-Oscar Tom Hanks star along side some Hollywood favorites in this 1986 comedy…. emphasis on COMEDY. Ooo boy... so much comedy. Enjoy our origins and hang tight for some newness….Meanwhile, here's Jeff and Joelle in lock down. (thank you, Google closed captions!)

When you're in the mood for a fun, breezy comedy, where else would you look than the crime and corruption of the mean, gritty streets of late-70s/early-80s New York? Not sounding great? But what if you had Henry Winkler, Micheal Keaton, and Shelly Long as your guides? That's more or less what happens in Ron Howard's 1982 comedy Night Shift. Join Nick, Chris, and actor/comedian/podcaster Michelle Nakamoto as we look at this 80s sex-worker farce to see if Beetlejuice and the Fonz can manage to pull more laughs than cringes.
Have you heard of an early 80's movie featuring Henry Winkler, Michael Keaton, and Shelley Long directed by Ron Howard and featuring music from Burt Bacharach and Rod Stewart? Well until recently neither had we. We're not sure how this movie escaped our notice for so long, but we've just watched it for the first time and we're ready to discuss this hidden gem.

He was a performer and writer on CBS’s Tim Conway Show, was regularly seen on the Disney Channel, and Eric’s an “Imagineer,” having designed The Mickey Mouse Club-Audition attraction for Disney World. Cool, huh?? I know Eric as an alum of The Second City in Chicago. Eric’s company included Shelly Long and George Wendt. We hit so many subjects that we ran long. Nice. Enjoy my chat with Eric Boardman.

There's plenty of 80's goodness wrapped up in this totally awesome episode. Jaime is an enthusiastic film lover and passionate about her favorite films. Her list of favorites includes John Carpenter's BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA (1986) and the Shelly Long vehicle TROOP BEVERLY HILLS (1989). We explore the quiet love people have for this Girl Scout classic and share our love of BACK TO THE BEACH (1987) and the sci-fi cult classic NIGHT OF THE COMET (1984). We also include a serious film, 1976's NETWORK. You'll also hear about Michael Keaton and his highly quotable movie GUNG HO (1986). Make sure to follow the podcast on Twitter: @WYFMoviePodcast for visual accompaniment to this episode and for plenty more movie fun!
