Siberia: a vast area of over 13 million square kilometres, which consists of taiga, tundra and even temperate forests. From the north of this region, where temperatures regularly drop below -25°C, come reports of a massive meteor having crashed. Not only that, the team who went to investigate the impact crater lost contact and never returned. Rumours are spreading of a strange parasite that possesses all living things in the region. He was born in London, England in 1999. He started playing the guitar when he was 13 and he was heavily influenced by rock and blues music. At the age of 17, he was recognized by Guitar Player Magazine and was presented the 2017 Ronnie Montrose Official Rock the Nation Award for upcoming young guitar players. He has worked as a session guitarist and music producer for various projects, such as the Netflix series The Witcher, the video game Cyberpunk 2077, and the movie Wonder Woman 19841. He joined Two Steps From Hell in 2019 and has toured with them in Europe and North America. He plays electric guitar, acoustic guitar, and mandolin in the band. He is also a solo artist and released his own album called Skye's The Limit in 20201. The album features his original compositions and covers of some of his favorite songs. Diversiteit in al haar facetten. Zo kan je episode 6 van Cinema Classica omschrijven. We beginnen met de filmmuziek uit de prent Sherlock Holmes. Een film van Guy Ritchie, waarbij Hans Zimmer zich als componist van zijn beste kant liet zien. Het is een Britse film uit 2009, gebaseerd op het gelijknamige personage bedacht door Arthur Conan Doyle. De muziek of het thema liever is ontstaan door slechts een handvol artiesten samen te laten experimenteren met verschillende instrumenten. Het is uiteindelijk een volksdans-achtige muziek geworden, waarin je ondermeer een accordeon, tin wistle, violen, een banjo, cimbalom en een gebroken pub piano hoort. Met Invictus gaan we terug in de tijd van Madiba, of beter bekend onder de naam Nelson Mandela. De film getuigt over het leven van Nelson en hoe sport mensen kan samenbrengen. Een waargebeurd verhaal, verrijkt met de mooie muziek van Zuid-Afrika. Hoewel het nummer dat ik gekozen heb wat Iers en helemaal niet Afrikaans klinkt, is er op de CD toch heel wat te horen van de Zuid-Afrikaanse muziek. Wat je vandaag zal horen is heel divers, alle stijlen door elkaar. Hiermee hoop ik je al een tipje van de sluier te kunnen lichten rond hoe gevarieerd filmmuziek is. Zeker Hans Zimmer is een componist die heel graag samenwerkt met andere componisten en telkens weer met iets afkomt waarvan je denkt, dit zag ik niet aankomen. Hoewel hij de laatste jaren heel erg in de elektronische muziek zit, is het op een of andere manier toch zeker niet slecht, al is dat heel persoonlijk uiteraard. Het is daarom dat er deze episode meer werken van Hans Zimmer zitten. Je zal hem trouwens nog heel veel horen in de komende episodes van Cinema Classica, want zijn oeuvre is niet te overzien. Ik denk dat ik mag stellen dat hij een van de meest succesvolle filmmuziek componisten is. Ze noemen hem zelfs een “rockstar” omwille van zijn vele shows en filmmuziek concerten die hij brengt. Een van zijn ondernemingen is bijvoorbeeld de samenwerking met Two Steps From Hell waar hij o.a. de concertenreeks The Masterpiece heeft mee georganiseerd. Voor de liefhebbers van elektronische epische muziek, aangevuld met een hemels koor, dan is dit een absolute aanrader. Je kan delen van de show wel via YouTube terugvinden. We begonnen met Zimmer, en zullen er ook mee eindigen. Een van zijn bekendere werken is deze voor de film Gladiator. Now we are free is een heel bekend nummer dat in tal van zalen al gespeeld werd. De soundtrack zou niets geweest zijn zonder de fantastisch mooie stem van de Australische Lisa Gerrard. Ze behaalde internationale faam met de groep “Dead Can Dance” en werd vooral bekend omwille van haar diepe contra-alt zangstem en haar eigen zelfbedachte taal. Ze werd dan ook bekroond met de Golden Globe Award voor haar bijdrage aan de film Gladiator. Bij het horen van dit nummer zal je snappen waarom. Sit back and enjoy the sounds of film …
