In this powerful episode of Utah Stories, we tackle the hard-to-discuss issues of homelessness, mental health, and the nonprofit system. Richard Markosian sits down with Bernie Hart, a changemaker who's been quietly transforming lives for over a decade. Bernie runs a free Tai Chi program at Library Square in Salt Lake City, offering not only breakfast but also a chance for homeless individuals to heal their minds and bodies. Hear his unfiltered insights on why many homeless individuals are labeled "service-resistant" when, in reality, they have experienced repeated failures from existing mental health and shelter systems. This episode challenges the conventional nonprofit model, which Bernie argues is more focused on satisfying donors than creating real change for clients. He offers an honest critique of mental health programs and addiction services while proposing a shift toward community-based, human-centered solutions. Is Criticizing The LDS Church Anti-Mormon? Some blowback to our April issue of the magazine called "Utah's Identity Crisis" - we will read the words of a reader who is pissed off at Utah Stories' current issue.
When homeless leaders such as Kseniya Kniazeva of Nomad Alliance talk about what the unsheltered homeless need more than anything they say one thing: a sanctioned campground. This way the personal property of the individuals can remain safe. When we ask the homeless what they need more than anything Jonnie (who has been homeless for 30 years tells Utah Stories) –provided the most typical answer: “We don't need more food, we are all very well fed. We don't need more blankets…We need property. We can manage the property on our own, just a place where we can be where the police will not harass us.”

Get the story behind the settlement and development of the Great Basin in this episode of the Utah Stories Show that dives deep into Mormon Pioneer history and the community-building efforts of the early pioneers. Find out what they had right, that we have largely forgotten. Why is this relevant today? Utah has now more tech jobs per capita than any other state. Our educated workforce, strong family values and comparatively cheap real estate has successfully landed big tech in little Utah. But what is to stop Utah from becoming just like California? Great for the elite tech workers and rich; but terrible for middle-class working Americans who are only watching their dreams of owning homes and businesses disappear. Utah once had very clearly defined priorities and values. Those values defined the entire Great Basin area and most western states. The values were to keep government small, maintain a strong middle class and maintain limited government by maintaining a strong civic partnership between small and medium-sized businesses and government. Today, more than ever our government is operating like a plutocracy, for the rich, by the rich -- and catering to big corporations and massive tech companies. It's time we returned to the original western values which defined the culture of the region. Brigham Young and Joseph Smith's ideals to create strong local economies and communities have been largely forgotten. In this episode, we illustrate how Brigham Young and the Latter-day Saints successfully built nearly 600 small communities throughout the West, from Canada to Mexico and throughout the entire Great Basin. Big-tech is taking aim at the voices on the right and silencing decent. They do this under the pretense that they are preventing violence and hate speech. This perhaps seems justified to many Americans. But now voices on the center and independent publishers are being silenced as well. Utah Stories mission is to promote civil discourse and the voices on both sides of political debate. But when we attempted to cover the protests on Utah's Capitol Hill on January 6th we had a post banned by Instagram. We want to believe that this ban was the result of their bots and their algorithm inaccurately tagging our photo (which was of two musicians). We want to believe that Instagram (owned by Facebook) doesn’t want to silence independent voices, but prevent the spread of hate and violence. But according to Debbie Aldrich of Creative Destruction Media, this is simply not the case.
Utah Capitol building-- The Proud Boys, local militia groups, retired veterans and angry citizens were all on hand to protest the final confirmation of Joe Biden's electoral victory. Utah Stories’ objective was to understand if indeed Trump supporters were disavowing themselves from the Republican Party. We spoke to about a dozen protestors who feel that the election was fraudulent. Many did believe that the Republican Party is now turning its support away from Trump, and many of them were turning their support away from the Republican Party.
The development projects over farmland are contrary to the original Mormon Pioneer’s vision of a sustainable future. Brigham Young is quoted saying “Utah’s fertile soils were worth their weight in gold and called upon state and local officials to preserve our farms, concluding that “the value of these lands surpasses … the value of nearly every other conceivable use, and should be reserved for our food security needs.” Why now are so many of Utah’s political leaders so ready to rezone agricultural areas into residential and vacation properties? According to the ranchers Utah Stories spoke to, it is because many of the political leaders are in the property development business.

Utah Stories was founded on the principle that all people deserve a voice and all opinions count if the final aim is to find the truth. Diversity of thought is just as important or more important than the diversity of skin color. So why are leftists deciding to cancel those who don't conform with politically correct ideologies? We dive into this movement by examining Marxist thinking and where this movement could end up if it isn't squashed.
This week Sarah takes us through the bizarre story of a BYU student turned hijacker in the 1970s (you know, when hijacking was commonplace). There are twists and turns that make this tale a story to remember.
Utah Stories examines the likelihood of inflation as the Fed plans yet another $3 trillion spending package. Where will this all end? Examining inflation from layman's terms is like attempting to look at watch gears and understand how it all works. It's not that I can begin to believe that I can understand inflation in entirety but by listening to many sources about how they describe what is happening and why things are happening the way they are, I'm beginning to feel that I have a better handle on it. In this post I'm not going to share my thoughts that I already shared in the episode, but instead share all of my notes in researching this topic. I hope readers will do their own research and come to their own conclusions. The basic questions we are trying to answer are the following: What are the causes of inflation? What is the government doing to mitigate inflation? If the government is drastically increasing the supply of money in the next few months what type of impact will that have on prices? Why does it appear the government has underreported inflation levels for the past ten years and what will be the consequences of the false numbers they have been reporting? What can we begin to expect the new economy coming out of Coronavirus look like if the economy continues to remain shut down? So those are my basic five questions I’m attempting to answer. I will be super happy if you happen to know more than me, or you see somewhere I have gotten it wrong -- please feel free to correct me. for more show notes and links to all of our sources visit UtahStories.com
As Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson and Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall decided to extend restaurant and bar closures to at least May 1st, State Liquor stores have long lines as customers wait for their essential remedies for staying home. Liquor is deemed by the state as essential if bought at state liquor stores. But not essential if the livelihoods of small business owners are in question. Why is this? In this episode of the Utah Stories podcast I discuss this issue with local restaurant owner Eddee Johanson, who owns Yoshis Japanese Grill.

We live in a world where our lives are becoming more and more dictated by social media and algorithm-driven computer platforms. They track us, they learn us, tell us what we want and when we want it, they know us. The question, whether or not this sort of technology is a blessing or a curse is obligatory, it must be asked. But ... could it be both a blessing and a curse? Pete Ashdown is in a credible position to reflect on this issue. He is the founder of Xmission, an internet service provider in Utah and a former senatorial candidate. In the latest Utah Stories podcast, he discusses with the current state of the internet with Utah Stories publisher, Rich Markosian.

I suppose I agree. But If you wish to see my conclusion on this point skip to the end. Because perhaps there isn’t enough blood in this story to make it interesting for a full five minutes to read all of the words.
