On this episode we chat with virtuoso violinist, composer, producer, songwriter, arranger, and conductor, James Desautels. From concert halls and music festivals to small clubs and intimate recording studios, “Jamie” has performed in 37 countries across 5 continents over a career spanning more than 20 years. Born in Calgary, Canada, Jamie began studying classical violin at age 5 and within two years was also studying fiddle, country and bluegrass music. As a teenager he toured playing classical and fiddle music, and after achieving a Music Performance Diploma from Mount Royal University Conservatory at age 19 and a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Calgary at age 21, Jamie moved to the United States to attend the University of Arizona where he received his Masters. Soon after he relocated to obtain a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Texas. He resided in Austin for 17 years while working and touring as a professional musician. Jamie first gained international attention when he was invited to tour as a violinist with David Byrne and Tosca Strings. Since then he has worked with Arcade Fire, Austin Pops Orchestra, Marcia Ball, Garth Brooks, Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Natalie Cole, Elvis Costello, Christopher Cross, Diana Krall, Ray LaMontagne, Yo-Yo Ma, Bobby McFerrin, Don McLean, Willie Nelson, Jeffrey Osborne, Luciano Pavarotti, Pearl Jam, Itzhak Perlman, Ray Price, Bruce Robison, San Antonio Symphony, Doc Severinsen, Frank Sinatra Jr., the Temptations, Vast, and countless other artists. He is the solo violinist on the soundtrack to the Hollywood movie 'Badland', the first violinist on the soundtrack for the series finale episode of 'The Office', and a violinist on the soundtrack for Terence Malick's film 'To the Wonder'. Jamie has taught master classes in Jinan, China and Xian and China as well as recording music for Audium/Koch, Blue Rock, Disney, Microsoft, Nonesuch, Virgin Classics, Vitamin, and Warner Music Group. Way back in 1969 a 25-year old Philip Brunelle was hired as organist and choirmaster at Plymouth Congregational Church in Minneapolis, while still serving as percussionist and pianist for the Minnesota Orchestra. Clearly, he wasn't busy enough. Because in that same year, Philip founded the Plymouth Music Series of Minnesota which later became VocalEssence (http://vocalessence.org). In this episode we go back in time to understand the organization's founding stories -- the motivations and challenges Philip faced, as well as his inspirations. We talk about how Philip met Aaron Copland (it involves sitting between Leonard Bernstein and Copland) then later inviting Copland to Minneapolis to conduct his choral work. We talk about the systems and attitudes necessary to sustain decade upon decade of inventive musical programming, financial stability and audience engagement. And we talk about what's in store for VocalEssence's 50th season, as well as the next 50 years. If there's a founder's story, this is it. Svenska artister är inga divor, men Sverige lanserar inte sin seriösa musik! Följ med Eva Sjöstrand till Usedom musikfestival som satte fokus på det svenska 2016, främst sången, den ljusa klangen. Sedan muren föll arrangeras det årligen en tre veckor lång festival på den forna svenskön Usedom. For the label’s fifth opera, Gergiev conducts Donizetti’s masterpiece with a magnificent cast led by Natalie Dessay. Donizetti’s tragic opera in three acts depicts a family feud set in the Lammermuir hills of Scotland. The opera was premiered on 26 September 1835 at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, with the coloratura soprano Fanny Tacchinardi Persiani, and a revised version in French followed suit in 1839. Inspired by Sir Walter Scott’s novel The Bride of Lammermoor, the central character of Lucia Ashton (Dessay) is in love with Edgardo di Ravenswood, her brother Enrico’s sworn enemy. With his fortune waning, Lord Enrico plots to force Lucia to marry Lord Arturo Bucklaw, in order to guarantee his continued power. Torn between her family and true love, Lucia submits to her brother’s desires but in turn loses her mind. Lucia’s delicate disposition is tested and results in the famous ‘mad scene’ where Lucia kills her new bridegroom Arturo. Natalie Dessay is one of the world’s most sought-after sopranos and an admired interpreter of lyric heroines. She is particularly renowned for her interpretation of the role of Lucia, which she has performed at the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House and the Mariinsky Theatre. Future engagements include Verdi’s La Traviata with the LSO at the Aix-en-Provence Festival in July and at the Wiener Staatsoper in October. Piotr Beczala is rapidly establishing a reputation as one of today’s leading lyric tenors. He has recently sung Edgardo with the Metropolitan Opera in New York and on tour in Japan, and this summer will perform at the Bayerische Staatsoper and Salzburg Festival. Valery Gergiev recently won the Disc of the Year Award from BBC Music Magazine for his LSO Live recording of Prokofiev’s Romeo & Juliet. In July, Gergiev will conduct the Mariinsky Ballet at New York Metropolitan Opera and in August he conducts at the Edinburgh Festival and BBC Proms with the Mariinsky Orchestra before opening the LSO’s 2011-12 concert season. In October he embarks on a major tour of the USA and Canada with the Mariinsky Orchestra, including residencies at Carnegie Hall and Berkeley.
