A Festival Odyssey: Phish, Mondegreens, and Moments with My SonLarry Mishkin reflects on his recent experience attending the Mondegreen Festival, a Phish festival in Dover, Delaware, with his son and friends. He shares his enthusiasm for the event, highlighting the performances and the significance of certain songs, including "The MoMA Dance" and "NICU," which have deep ties to Phish's history and fan culture. Larry provides a detailed history of Phish festivals, from the Clifford Ball in 1996 to the most recent Mondegreen Festival, noting memorable moments, attendance figures, and unique aspects of each event. The episode also includes a brief discussion on the 60th anniversary of The Beatles' performance at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Denver, Colorado. Larry expresses his excitement about attending the festival with his son and reminisces about the special bond they shared during the event.MONDEGREENPhishAugust 15 – 18, 2024The WoodlandsDover Delaware Band's 11th festival, NOT counting Curveball set for 2018 that was canceled at the last minute due to contaminated water supply due to heavy rains and flooding. Nine year gap between MagnaBall in March, 2015 and Mondegreen, biggest gap between festivals in band's history.  INTRO:                                 Moma Dance                                                Night One, August 15, 2024                                                First Night, First Set, First Song (into Back On The Train)                                                Phish @ The Woodlands, Mondegreen Festival, Dover DE 2024-08-15 : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive                                                Track #2                                                2:31 – 4:05 By:  Anastasio/Fishman/Gordon/McConnell/MarshallPlayed:First Played:  6/30/98 in Copenhagen, DenmarkMost recent: August 15, 2024 (Mondegreen)Current Gap:  3 shows The title of “Moma” is another example of Phish Phonetics, cleverly transforming the moment ends lyric into a reference to a display of “The Rhombus” at New York City's Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).Mondegreen:  are they saying, “The Moma Dance” OR “the Moment Ends”??                               SHOW No 1:                     NICU                                                Night One, August 15, 2024                                                First Set, 6th song (out of Roggae and into A Wave of Hope)                                                Phish @ The Woodlands, Mondegreen Festival, Dover DE 2024-08-15 : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive                                                Track #7                                                3:00 – 4:56 By:         Anastasio/MarshallPlayed 156 timesFirst Played: 3.6.92 at The Music Hall in Portsmouth, NHMost Recent:  August 15, 2024 (Mondegreen)Gap: 3 shows Has any Phish song had as many names with as many explanations as “NICU”? At its debut in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Trey introduced the song as “In an Intensive Care Unit.” Shortly thereafter, the name was changed to “NICU,” which some considered a play on a line from the backing vocals in the chorus (“and I see you”) and others noted was the abbreviation for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.Shortly thereafter, the “controversy” began, as controversy can only begin among rabid Phish fans. Some called the song “And I See You.” Some stuck with the original “In an Intensive Care Unit.” Other interesting theories developed, including one from the Internet where a fan noted that the elements Nickel (NI) and Copper (Cu) are side-by-side on the Periodic Table and that the title “NICU” may thus be a reference to nickels and pennies or, more likely, small change.  Title is a Mondegreen for “And I See You” Music News (from Mondegreen) Matthew's crew:  Matthew, me, Donny, Jake, Dave and Seth Michigan Crew:  ??? NYC Crew: Max & Jess, Joey and Darby, Darby's brother, Brad and Sam, Dan the drummer (and?), Dude from Florida and girlfriend (??), Tesh,WHO ELSE SHOULD I MENTION? CLEVELAND CREW:  Kevin, two buddies?  Aaron   Anyone else? Hot and humid/ AC unitsTents v. Conceived by Tom Marshall and Marc Daubert around 1984-85 on piano and acoustic guitar, they brought their creation over to Trey's house, where it was recorded. Trey added a harmony to it on his electric guitar, and the “Hydrogen” we have come to know was born. Initially intended for Tom, Marc, and Trey's band Bivouac, “Hydrogen” ended up in the Phish lineup and made its debut, all alone, on 4/6/85.  After a few years, it became the connector between Mike's Song and Weekapaug Groove. Into Weekapaug GrooveBy:  Anastasio/Fishman/McConnell/GordonPlayed: 523 timesFirst: 7.23.1988 at Pete's Phabulous Phish Phest in Underhill, VTMost Recent:  August 17, 2024 (Mondegreen Night 3)Gap: 1 show “Weekapaug Groove” takes its name from the town of Weekapaug, located on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean in southwestern Rhode Island. According to Mike, the song's lyrics (“Trying to make a woman that you move, sharing in a Weekapaug Groove”) are meaningless. As Mike said in a 9/9/97 interview with Parke Puterbaugh: “So we came back to Boston [from Weekapaug, after playing a gig there at a yacht club], and I guess we were in the van or the Voyager we used to drive in, and that song “Oh What a Night” came on the radio. You know that one? That awful Four Seasons song? We just constantly listened to songs and changed around the words as to what they might sound like. I always had a particularly hard time hearing lyrics anyway, so I always would sing a song on the radio, sing along with the wrong words. So the bridge of that song goes ‘Oh I-I-I trying to something,' but I was singing it, ‘Oh I-I-I trying to make a woman that you move,' which means nothing, 'sharing in a Weekapaug groove.' So we all just started singing that, as complete nonsense: ‘trying to make a woman that you move.' It never occurred to any of us that it had any meaning, ever. There was a period of time that we were singing it, and I used to just yell out the lyrics, between singing them I would just yell them out as if I was preaching them, just to sort of make it more ironic that they have no meaning.”  SHOW No. 3:                    Yamar                                                Night 4, August 18, 2024 – First set 10th song out of Stash and into Timber                                                August 17, 1996, Clifford Ball, Plattsburgh AFB, Plattsburgh, NY (1st Phish Festival) into It's Ice                                                Phish-Ya Mar-Clifford Ball (youtube.com)                                                0:13 – 1:45 By:  Cyril Ferguson                27th November 1951 - Cyril 'Dry Bread' Ferguson was born in Nassau, New Providence, Bahama Islands.Ferguson was a Bahamian musician and entertainer. It represents one of Phish's few forays into calypso and is among the most playful and danceable songs in the band's repertoire. And anytime Trey screams for Page to take the reins – “Play it, Leoooooo!” – the crowd is apt to go wild. Page's nickname actually comes from this line in the original, where The Mustangs urged their own piano man to step into the spotlight. The title seems to reference the slurred interpretation of “your ma,” as the singer recounts the disdain his lover's family has for him. Phish put their own unique stamp on it by often changing the “no good pa” lyric in the chorus to mimic their own “oh kee pa” phrase.  Played: 232 timesFirst: 2.21.1987 at Slade Hall, UV, Burlington, VTMost Recent:  8.18.2024Gap: 0 shows Marijuana News Senator Says Harris Will ‘Be Ready To Sign' Marijuana Reform Bills If Elected PresidentGOP Senators Claim Marijuana Is A ‘Gateway Drug' As They Oppose Rescheduling And Legalization3.      People Who Use Marijuana Are Less Likely To Be Obese, New Study Shows                 SHOW No. 4:                    Simple                                                Night 4, August 18, 2024 – First set second to last song of Izabella and into Golden Age                                                July 27, 2024, Alpine Valley, East Troy, WI second set out of Sigma Oasis and into The Howling                                                Phish - 7/27/2024 - Simple (4K HDR) (youtube.com)                                                0:18 – 1:28 By:         GordonPlayed:  209 timesFirst:     5.27.1994 at the Warfield Theater in San FranciscoMost Recent:  August 18, 2024 (Mondegreen Night 4)Gap: 0 shows "Simple" was first written and recorded by Mike Gordon in a four-track medium in the Doo-wop style and introduced to the band during the studio sessions forHoist. This version reflected the country and bluegrass writing style of many previous Gordon compositions. The song was left off of the albumand the band showed hesitation in performing it live. Then, on 5/27/94, “Simple” debuted in a very strange and raw fashion during the “Mike's Song” at the Warfield in San Francisco. In contrast to the song we know today, the debut version of “Simple” was Mike's original lyrics sung by the band members over a jam that had emerged from “Mike's.” Three weeks later, “Simple” was played for a second time at the historic 6/17/94 gig, the same night that much of the country was watching the low-speed police chase of O.J. Simpson's white Ford Bronco through L.A. This version was significantly reworked and sounded much like the “Simple” we are accustomed to hearing today, with the exception of a minor humoristic augmentation providing the line “We've got O.J., cause we've got a band.” Mondegreen:  We've got a cymbal (simple) cause we've got a band   OUTRO:                               Twee Pri                                                Night 3, August 17, 2024 – Encore out of YEM into end of show                                                April 20, 2024, The Sphere, Las Vegas, NV Encore out of A Life Beyond the Dream into end of show                                                Tvidler 202202 11 by Ryan Maguire (youtube.com)                                                0:00 – end By:  Anastasio/Fishman/Gordon/McConnellPlayed:  321 tiesFirst:  2.1.1991 at Alumnae Hall, Brown University — Providence, RIMost Recent: 8.17.2024 Mondegreen Night 3Gap: 1 show A "reprise" is a sort of musical afterthought – basically a reintroduction of and variation on the main theme of a piece of music. Thus, “Tweezer Reprise” is a slight variation – a condensation of sorts – of “Tweezer.” As it does on the album A Picture of Nectar, the “Reprise” often follows “Tweezer” in concert, most frequently as an encore song. It is also common as a second set closer following an earlier “Tweezer.” A few times, the “Reprise” has even been spewed out of some long, monster “Tweezer,” serving as the thrilling exclamation point at the end of a raging, set-long sentence (e.g. 5/7/94, 6/22/95).On occasion, “Tweezer Reprise” has shown up as a surprise in a show where there has been no performance of “Tweezer” proper. Although usually this occurs because the “Reprise” will be referring back to a non-reprised “Tweezer” at the previous night's show (e.g. 12/30/96's “Tweezer” was reprised on 12/31/96), the song has been known to appear, albeit rarely, completely free from its Granddaddy counterpart, like on 9/29/99. The most interesting example of this, and perhaps the most unusual “Tweezer Reprise” ever performed, was on 12/8/99, which featured an a cappella version that came out of a “YEM” vocal jam to close the second set. The band later finished off the show with a traditional “Tweezer Reprise” to end the encore. Other interesting versions include 10/27/94 and 10/21/95. .Produced by PodConx Deadhead Cannabis Show - https://podconx.com/podcasts/deadhead-cannabis-showLarry Mishkin - https://podconx.com/guests/larry-mishkinRob Hunt - https://podconx.com/guests/rob-huntJay Blakesberg - https://podconx.com/guests/jay-blakesbergSound Designed by Jamie Humiston - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamie-humiston-91718b1b3/Recorded on Squadcast

Internationally Gaudreau played for the American national team at the senior and junior level, including the 1993 World Championships. Now, we turn our feature story…. Gov. Ned Lamont has submitted a request for a major disaster declaration to the Biden administration, seeking federal funds to help Connecticut recover from damage caused by the remnants of Hurricane Ida. The Sept. 1st storm dumped as much as 8 inches of rain on parts of the state, resulting in heavy flooding and an estimated $7.2 million in damage to homes, businesses and infrastructure. It also resulted in the death of State Police Sgt. Brian Mohl, whose vehicle was swept away in floodwaters. Lamont said: “The effects from the remnants of Hurricane Ida were of such severity that effective recovery is beyond the capabilities of state and local governments, and as a result, supplemental federal assistance is necessary.” Lamont's request would allow homeowners in Fairfield and New London counties, as well residents of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the Mohegan Tribal Nation, to receive federal reimbursements for the costs of uninsured damage to their housing and personal property. According to Lamont's request, just 8% of damaged homes in New London County and 23% in Fairfield County had flood insurance. The proposed declaration also would allow municipalities in Fairfield and Middlesex counties to receive up to 75% federal reimbursement of the costs of uninsured damage to roads and other infrastructure, as well as costs for emergency response. The governor's office said public assistance damage assessments in Litchfield, New Haven and New London counties have not been completed and his request could be updated. In 1945 Penny and Clif were married and made their home in St. David's, raising their four children. Their family summers were split between Weekapaug and Squam Lake, NH. After the children were grown, Penny and Clif moved to Haverford with their later years living at Beaumont at Bryn Mawr, all-the-while wintering at "The Nest" in Vero Beach, Florida. Helen's abundant love, great sense of humor and energy were focused on family and friends, but also included running for public office and her volunteer work. Growing up a Pennock meant flowers were always in her life. She won first prize at the Philadelphia Flower Show for "Individual Floral Arranging". She also was a faithful member of Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church where she served as a Deacon for many years. During WWII she trained as a nurse's aid and continued her service during the Vietnam War. Helen volunteered as a "Grey Lady" at the Valley Forge Hospital in Coatesville, PA. Twice a week she escorted the amputees from Fort Dix, NJ to Valley Forge Hospital on an old school bus. After listening to the men in extreme discomfort during transportation Helen used her power of persuasion in Washington D.C. and Detroit to have money appropriated to build a prototype deluxe bus equipped with special shock absorbers for the amputees. That bus was nicknamed "The Collings Special". Helen was later honored at Walter Reed Hospital, outside Washington, D.C., for her insight, tenacity and accomplishment. Penny made long lasting friends wherever she went. She and Clif loved life together! Traveling the world extensively, playing golf and bridge, her fun sense of humor always on display. A convenient mini-meal, Daily Gut & Brain” is available now at the CVS Pharmacy in Wakefield. Now for some trivia. Did you know that Rhode Island native, Raymond Hood, was an American architect who worked in the Neo-Gothic and Art Deco styles? He is best known for his designs of the Tribune Tower, American Radiator Building, and Rockefeller Center. Through a short yet highly successful career, Hood exerted an outsized influence on twentieth century architecture. Now for our feature story: A proposed ordinance aimed at regulating short-term house rentals will remain on the drawing board after the Town Council received a host of new comments from property owners engaged in the practice. On Monday, the council voted 7-0 not to move the proposed ordinance ahead for a public hearing after councilors listened to several speakers. A few of the speakers offered to work with the council in a workshop setting to offer ideas on crafting an ordinance intended to make it easier for officials to deal with noise and other complaints arising from short-term rental properties. Thomas J. Liguori Jr., a lawyer representing Randall Realtors, said real estate agencies serve as listing agents for cottages that are rented in Misquamicut during the summer. The agencies have developed rental agreements that identify the number of tenants and vehicles and if the contracts are violated, the agencies and police can be contacted to enforce the rules During a previous meeting, residents complained that short-term renters disrupt neighborhoods with parties, excessive noise, and other problems. As currently written, the proposed ordinance suggests short-term rentals will be permitted in all parts of town. A handful of property owners who rent their houses out on a short-term basis questioned aspects of the proposed ordinance and suggested it would have the effect of punishing good-faith operators and saddling them with new fees on top of property, sales  and hotel taxes. "It looks reactive and punitive," said Fred Buffum, whose family has provided long- and short-term rentals for decades in Weekapaug. One resident, Tamara Tarpinian-Jachym, encouraged the council to adopt an ordinance, saying she is frequently annoyed and bothered by renters in Misquamicut. "We want some peace and quiet and safety," Tarpinian-Jachym said. For more about the coronavirus pandemic and the latest on all things in and around Westerly, head over to westerlysun.com. A convenient mini-meal, Daily Gut & Brain” is available now at the CVS Pharmacy in Wakefield. Now for some trivia. Did you know that Rhode Island is home to the famed pirate, Thomas Tew? Also known as the Rhode Island Pirate, he was a 17th-century English privateer-turned pirate. He embarked on two major pirate voyages and met a bloody death on the second, and he pioneered the route which became known as the Pirate Round which involved traveling from the Western Atlantic, to the Southern tip of Africa, stopping at Madagascar and then up to Yemen and India. Many other infamous pirates followed in his path, including Henry Every and William Kidd. Now, we turn our feature story…. We start off the week with bittersweet news in Rhode Island. The pandemic in America is ending and a Rhode Island factory once praised by former President Donald Trump for ramping up production of N95 face masks in the early days of the pandemic is laying off nearly 500 workers as the pandemic eases and demand for the face coverings wanes. A spokesperson for Honeywell International told WPRI-TV on Wednesday that about 470 jobs at the Smithfield facility are being cut. Employees are being urged to apply for other jobs at the company and some eligible workers will receive severance, he said. “We are now seeing a dramatic reduction in demand for N95s in the U.S. as many states are ending or scaling back mask mandates and vaccinations are being widely distributed,” Eric Krantz said in a statement. “For these reasons, Honeywell is adjusting its N95 operations and ceasing manual production of N95s at our facility in Smithfield.” The company is shifting production of N95s to “more efficient, automated production lines” that were created during the pandemic. The disposable were a critical piece of safety equipment for health care workers and others. “We appreciate the hard work and dedication these employees displayed in helping to protect American frontline workers battling the pandemic,” Krantz said. The Smithfield facility also produces eye protection products, including safety glasses, goggles and face shields. Dwight was born in Westerly in 1936 and attended Westerly Public Schools. After working for several organizations in New York City, Mr. Cornell moved to the Maryland suburb of Damascus where he was employed by Bechtel from 1965 until his retirement in 1993. Most of his work was in the field of design for large nuclear power facilities. Upon retirement he divided his time between West Palm Beach and a summer home in Weekapaug. In Florida, he became involved in the activities of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. While with the Auxiliary, he taught safe boating courses in the Public Education section and was a Vessel Examiner. Mr. Cornell served as a Flotilla Staff Officer in these endeavors. In appreciation for the education he received at WPI, Dwight has made sizable donations of money and property to the Institute and has established a scholarship in his name in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. But when the regular, in-person meetings of her beloved writers group were suspended due to the pandemic, and group leaders suggested moving to Zoom for the group's weekly meetings, she quickly mastered the online videoconferencing platform.  "Wendy lit a fire under me," joked Huang, referring to Wendy Bradford of Mystic, the group's Zoom leader and chief motivator. Huang, a Stonington resident and retired financial services professional who these days "focuses on re-exploring her world through writing," along with other members of The Westerly Writers Group has used their quarantine time to publish their second book entitled: Homeland: An Anthology. Huang told us that "It was a Herculean effort and like Keystone Cops… But it worked out and it was a very interesting experiment." Homeland is a rich and fascinating 145-page collection of short fiction, poetry and creative nonfiction centered on the theme of "homeland" from the writers group, a sort of artistic response to the pandemic. From the Westerly Writers Group's perspective, they hope that it reminds readers of the "commonality of life experience and the importance of togetherness," Dyann Boudreau of Naragansett, who was a member of the book's content committee said "It's our collection of love, humor, sadness and a bit of intrigue that we hope will resonate with the readers," Bradford told us that “We didn't want COVID and social distancing to rob us of writing or community… Publishing another anthology seemed more important than ever, as our country was being torn apart by the pandemic, political stress and fears of an uncertain economic future." Sixteen writers from a variety of backgrounds have contributed to "Homeland," including Jane Barstow, a published author and retired professor of English and women's studies who taught in Greece and Bulgaria as a Fulbright Scholar; Weekapaug resident Mel Jolly, a retired U.S. Air Force Captain; Al Clemence of Westerly, a retired airline pilot who served in the U.S. Army as a pilot; Andy Rosenzweig, a retired policeman from the Bronx; Bernard "Bing" Bartick of North Stonington, a retired history teacher; Donna Vaillancourt of Westerly, a Boston native who is retired from a career in human resources; Donna Ursillo of Westerly, a semi-retired freelance writer and several others. These mini-episodes will be posted on a bi-weekly basis in between full episodes of Attendance Bias, when a guest and I will go over a full Phish show. Today's episode focuses on "Weekapaug Groove," played on 8/4/15 at the Ascend Amphitheater in Nashville, Tennessee. This concert came at a time when my life was in total disarray. I needed something special to help me make peace with a chapter that had recently closed. Heading to see Phish in Nashville, by myself, for the first time, did it. The jam in "Weekapaug Groove" that closed the show was slow, new, dark, heavy, and entirely unexpected. I break it down piece by piece and explain what it meant to me. Wizard of Oz teasing bookends the first set of this classic early Spring Tour show.  The second set is a microcosm of where Phish was at the time of recording.  It features fun with audience members, pokes at the crew, a My Sweet One that will knock you out, and strong versions of Weekapaug and Magilla.

In Episode 023, we take a step back to Spring 1993 to discuss the Weekapaug Groove from 04/02/1993 in Bellingham, Washington. A song that the band utilized to push beyond the fray into full-on Type II jamming space, this Bellingham version is an excellent example of Phish becoming comfortable with taking musical risks on a nightly basis.Songs featured in this episode are:Nils Frahm: “Down Down,”Low Cut Connie: “Boozophilia,”PJ Harvey: “Send His Love To Me,” andThe National: “It Never Happened,”In addition, we discuss two late-2017 records we highly recommend: Joana Serrat: “Dripping Springs,” and JD McPherson: “UNDIVIDED HEART & SOUL.”Check us out on Spotify: Beyond The Pond Podcast SongsYou can find us on Twitter: @_beyondthepond, Medium: https://medium.com/beyond-the-pond, and/or send us an email: beyondthepondpodcast@gmail.com.Please leave us a review on iTunes! Kate Spencer (VH1) tells us about her lifelong love of famed jam band Phish. We include some exceprts Phish songs in this podcast, and we need to mention two things: Phish songs are very long and deliberately have slow starts --- we tried to excerpt enough of the song to get a taste for that but ultimately an excerpt falls somewhat short of listening to an entire track. Also, we told Kate that any comments she made during the songs would not make it into the final podcast because during the live recording the tracks are quiet and we expected to replace them. BUT Kate's comments during the recording showed such enthusiasm that it seemed a more accurate descriptoin of the appeal of the band to figure a way keep them in. So you'll hear us say things like "wait! save that thought!" which turned out to be unnecessary. In addition to Phish, Anthony and Will talk a bit about their recent minor obsessions: re-discovering Kurt Vonnegut and the movie Singing In The Rain, respectively. Here's the full list of Phish songs Kate suggested we listen to in preparation for this podcast: 1. Divided Sky (my first AOL screenname is from this song!. I was at this one: Phish – The Divided Sky [Live In Brooklyn]) 2. Punch You In The Eye ( I am listening to this one now and it's so good. Phish – Punch You in the Eye) 3. Mike's Song --->I Am Hydrogen ----> Weekapaug (These are technically 3 different songs but often they all segue together and you kinda can't listen to one without the other. Like if you get a Mike's, you know Weekapaug is eventually coming and I like it best with IAH in the middle. This show has them all! Phish – Hampton/Winston-Salem '97) 4. Hood - I will cry talking about this song Phish – Harry Hood - Live LP Version - Hampton, 1998 5. The Curtain With (Phish – The Curtain With) You could also just do The Curtain, which is shorter with no jam at the end: Phish – The Curtain) This was the final song at their final show 6. I Didn't Know ( a different side of Phish!!!! Fishman plays the vaccum!  Phish – I Didn't Know) 7. YEM --- Phish – You Enjoy Myself CLASSIC PHISH 8. Wolfman's Brother - always makes me so happy when they play Wolfman's  Phish – Wolfman's Brother  9. Harpua Phish – Harpua - just such a weird, classic Phish song10. Phish – Fee --- The song that got me hooked when I was 14, from Junta!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 11. Strange Design -- I love when Page sings, and this song always makes me cry. He cried singing it at their "final show" Phish – Strange Design
