Send us a textHi everybody and welcome to today's episode of Attendance Bias. I am your host, Brian Weinstein. By now, everyone recognizes just how special last summer's Mondegreen festival was, inclusive of the music and the overall experience. Today's guest, Seamus Gallivan had a premonition of how special the festival would be to him, and emailed me several weeks ahead of time and asked me if he could kind of reserve the festival, to come on the podcast and talk about it after it was played. No one has ever asked to reserve a show before, so I wasn't sure how to respond. I told Seamus to hold off and see how the festival went, what his experience was, and what there would be to talk about. But in the end, Seamus was right. There was plenty to discuss. While I did release a full-festival recap soon after the festival was over, Seamus got back in touch and asked if he could tell his story about night three of Mondegreen: August 17, 2024. Certainly to both of us, it was the musical highlight of the weekend. And you can hear it in our voices during today's conversation. Seamus came prepared with tons of notes and observations, many of which mirrored mine, demonstrating that we were on the same page. You can even hear our voices rise and we start to speak faster and faster as we approach some of the night's musical highlights. And, believe me, there's no shortage of highlights. Let's join Seamus to talk about Trey's kooky guitar tones, the San Francisco Bay Area, and much more as we discuss night 3 of the Monegreen Festival from August 17, 2024 The Woodlands in Dover, Delaware.
Send us a textGet ready for Wednesday's full episode about 8/17/24 in Dover, DE with Seamus Gallivan! In the meantime, Attendance Bias listeners called in to share some of their favorite memories, and odd musings, from this past summer's Mondegreen Festival! Kill a few minutes in anticipation of Wednesday's full episode. Enjoy!

Send us a Text Message. It's been about 2 weeks since Phish's 11th festival, and we are just starting to come back to Earth. Luckily, I am joined by the best to recap those 4 amazing days in Delaware. Skinny and JW of the "Stub Me Down" podcast, along with Scott King, have a free-form conversation to reflect, rank, and simply shoot the breeze about Phish's long-awaited festival.Other than the introduction and outro, this episode was not edited.
A Festival Odyssey: Phish, Mondegreens, and Moments with My SonLarry Mishkin reflects on his recent experience attending the Mondegreen Festival, a Phish festival in Dover, Delaware, with his son and friends. He shares his enthusiasm for the event, highlighting the performances and the significance of certain songs, including "The MoMA Dance" and "NICU," which have deep ties to Phish's history and fan culture. Larry provides a detailed history of Phish festivals, from the Clifford Ball in 1996 to the most recent Mondegreen Festival, noting memorable moments, attendance figures, and unique aspects of each event. The episode also includes a brief discussion on the 60th anniversary of The Beatles' performance at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Denver, Colorado. Larry expresses his excitement about attending the festival with his son and reminisces about the special bond they shared during the event.MONDEGREENPhishAugust 15 – 18, 2024The WoodlandsDover Delaware Band's 11th festival, NOT counting Curveball set for 2018 that was canceled at the last minute due to contaminated water supply due to heavy rains and flooding. At its debut in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Trey introduced the song as “In an Intensive Care Unit.” Shortly thereafter, the name was changed to “NICU,” which some considered a play on a line from the backing vocals in the chorus (“and I see you”) and others noted was the abbreviation for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.Shortly thereafter, the “controversy” began, as controversy can only begin among rabid Phish fans. Some called the song “And I See You.” Some stuck with the original “In an Intensive Care Unit.” Other interesting theories developed, including one from the Internet where a fan noted that the elements Nickel (NI) and Copper (Cu) are side-by-side on the Periodic Table and that the title “NICU” may thus be a reference to nickels and pennies or, more likely, small change. Conceived by Tom Marshall and Marc Daubert around 1984-85 on piano and acoustic guitar, they brought their creation over to Trey's house, where it was recorded. Trey added a harmony to it on his electric guitar, and the “Hydrogen” we have come to know was born. Initially intended for Tom, Marc, and Trey's band Bivouac, “Hydrogen” ended up in the Phish lineup and made its debut, all alone, on 4/6/85. After a few years, it became the connector between Mike's Song and Weekapaug Groove. According to Mike, the song's lyrics (“Trying to make a woman that you move, sharing in a Weekapaug Groove”) are meaningless. As Mike said in a 9/9/97 interview with Parke Puterbaugh: “So we came back to Boston [from Weekapaug, after playing a gig there at a yacht club], and I guess we were in the van or the Voyager we used to drive in, and that song “Oh What a Night” came on the radio. You know that one? That awful Four Seasons song? We just constantly listened to songs and changed around the words as to what they might sound like. I always had a particularly hard time hearing lyrics anyway, so I always would sing a song on the radio, sing along with the wrong words. So the bridge of that song goes ‘Oh I-I-I trying to something,' but I was singing it, ‘Oh I-I-I trying to make a woman that you move,' which means nothing, 'sharing in a Weekapaug groove.' So we all just started singing that, as complete nonsense: ‘trying to make a woman that you move.' It never occurred to any of us that it had any meaning, ever. There was a period of time that we were singing it, and I used to just yell out the lyrics, between singing them I would just yell them out as if I was preaching them, just to sort of make it more ironic that they have no meaning.” SHOW No. 3: Yamar Night 4, August 18, 2024 – First set 10th song out of Stash and into Timber August 17, 1996, Clifford Ball, Plattsburgh AFB, Plattsburgh, NY (1st Phish Festival) into It's Ice Phish-Ya Mar-Clifford Ball (youtube.com) 0:13 – 1:45 By: Cyril Ferguson 27th November 1951 - Cyril 'Dry Bread' Ferguson was born in Nassau, New Providence, Bahama Islands.Ferguson was a Bahamian musician and entertainer. He composed songs in the genres of goombay, calypso and Bahamian pop music. Some of his more popular songs include: Ya Mar, Sunshine On My Body, Bahamian Music and Don't Squeeze The Mango.Ferguson died of complications related to diabetes on 9th April 2009. “Ya Mar” resides as a favorite in the hearts of many fans. It represents one of Phish's few forays into calypso and is among the most playful and danceable songs in the band's repertoire. And anytime Trey screams for Page to take the reins – “Play it, Leoooooo!” – the crowd is apt to go wild. Page's nickname actually comes from this line in the original, where The Mustangs urged their own piano man to step into the spotlight. The title seems to reference the slurred interpretation of “your ma,” as the singer recounts the disdain his lover's family has for him. Phish put their own unique stamp on it by often changing the “no good pa” lyric in the chorus to mimic their own “oh kee pa” phrase. This version reflected the country and bluegrass writing style of many previous Gordon compositions. The song was left off of the albumand the band showed hesitation in performing it live. Then, on 5/27/94, “Simple” debuted in a very strange and raw fashion during the “Mike's Song” at the Warfield in San Francisco. In contrast to the song we know today, the debut version of “Simple” was Mike's original lyrics sung by the band members over a jam that had emerged from “Mike's.” Three weeks later, “Simple” was played for a second time at the historic 6/17/94 gig, the same night that much of the country was watching the low-speed police chase of O.J. Simpson's white Ford Bronco through L.A. This version was significantly reworked and sounded much like the “Simple” we are accustomed to hearing today, with the exception of a minor humoristic augmentation providing the line “We've got O.J., cause we've got a band.” Mondegreen: We've got a cymbal (simple) cause we've got a band OUTRO: Twee Pri Night 3, August 17, 2024 – Encore out of YEM into end of show April 20, 2024, The Sphere, Las Vegas, NV Encore out of A Life Beyond the Dream into end of show Tvidler 202202 11 by Ryan Maguire (youtube.com) 0:00 – end By: Anastasio/Fishman/Gordon/McConnellPlayed: 321 tiesFirst: 2.1.1991 at Alumnae Hall, Brown University — Providence, RIMost Recent: 8.17.2024 Mondegreen Night 3Gap: 1 show A "reprise" is a sort of musical afterthought – basically a reintroduction of and variation on the main theme of a piece of music. Thus, “Tweezer Reprise” is a slight variation – a condensation of sorts – of “Tweezer.” As it does on the album A Picture of Nectar, the “Reprise” often follows “Tweezer” in concert, most frequently as an encore song. It is also common as a second set closer following an earlier “Tweezer.” A few times, the “Reprise” has even been spewed out of some long, monster “Tweezer,” serving as the thrilling exclamation point at the end of a raging, set-long sentence (e.g. 5/7/94, 6/22/95).On occasion, “Tweezer Reprise” has shown up as a surprise in a show where there has been no performance of “Tweezer” proper. Although usually this occurs because the “Reprise” will be referring back to a non-reprised “Tweezer” at the previous night's show (e.g. 12/30/96's “Tweezer” was reprised on 12/31/96), the song has been known to appear, albeit rarely, completely free from its Granddaddy counterpart, like on 9/29/99. The most interesting example of this, and perhaps the most unusual “Tweezer Reprise” ever performed, was on 12/8/99, which featured an a cappella version that came out of a “YEM” vocal jam to close the second set. The band later finished off the show with a traditional “Tweezer Reprise” to end the encore. Other interesting versions include 10/27/94 and 10/21/95. .Produced by PodConx Deadhead Cannabis Show - https://podconx.com/podcasts/deadhead-cannabis-showLarry Mishkin - https://podconx.com/guests/larry-mishkinRob Hunt - https://podconx.com/guests/rob-huntJay Blakesberg - https://podconx.com/guests/jay-blakesbergSound Designed by Jamie Humiston - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamie-humiston-91718b1b3/Recorded on Squadcast

Year Zero is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.A small group of writers attended two conferences on gender held concurrently in Killarney, Ireland in April. One was the annual meeting of the European affiliate of the World Professional Association of Transgender Health, known as EPATH. The other was the first gathering of an upstart organization called Genspect, which declared itself a rival to WPATH by scheduling a conference right down the road. Genspect urges an open-ended and exploratory approach to gender distress that contrasts with the immediate affirmation and push to medicalize that characterizes the WPATH model. Eliza Mondegreen wrote two reports on those conferences. Lisa Selin Davis did the same. Corinna Cohn, who began a course of estrogen at 18 and underwent sex reassignment surgery at 19, is the author of a Washington Post op-ed describing transition regret and has been active in seeking a carefully gatekept diagnostic protocol for gender dysphoric patients. Cohn testified before the Texas State Senate in support of a ban on pediatric gender medicine, telling Texas lawmakers “My heart breaks for the young people who are being lied to by well-meaning enablers, as they will need to learn the same painful lesson that I learned.” The lawmakers that Cohn addressed voted to approve passage of the ban on medically transitioning minors that Cohn had urged them to support. Readers of both Davis' and Mondegreen's post on the EPATH conference know they arrived at very different assessments of the event, with Davis finding grounds to be encouraged and hopeful, while Mondegreen came away with a bleaker prospect. I will also be weighing in on what I thought and felt while witnessing the inauguration of a new chapter in the unfolding story of the Twilight Zone-like unreality that has enveloped the Western world. In this chapter, the forces of reason and reality begin to challenge the enormous agglomeration of wealth, power, and influence that has been deployed on behalf of the obscurantism and error that currently masquerades as the vanguard of humanity. Prior to the composition of those pieces, Davis, Mondegreen, Cohn, and I met on the last night of the Genspect conference to debrief and share our impressions. There is a spontaneity and immediacy to these exchanges worth experiencing even for those who have already read Mondegreen's and Davis' posts. Audio is free to listen to; paid subscribers have access to a transcript. I'll also be releasing an abridged version of the exchange on YouTube and Twitter. This is a public episode. In this episode, Sasha & Stella chat with graduate student and Substack author Eliza Mondegreen, who is dedicated to the study of online trans and detrans communities. She also studies the knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs underpinning affirmative care. The conversation with Eliza begins with a deep dive into what led to her intimate exploration of gender. She shares how her history with eating disorders, an early interest in the study of totalitarianism, advocacy work around women's reproductive health, and her relationship with a close friend during their transition experience all helped pave the way for her intense interest and curiosity about gender, specifically the psychological experience as it relates to projecting distress and the medical interventions for managing the distress. Eliza shares how she explores these concepts in depth through her engagement with online communities (like Reddit) where she observes and reflects on the stories, ideas, and reactions shared by other members inside the internet-based groups.Eliza also speaks about her attendance at both the EPATH conference recently in Ireland, and the WAPTH conference last year in Canada for a fully immersive experience and a first-hand account of the affirmative approach to trans healthcare and medicalization. Eliza writes extensively on her Substack about her encounters and observations, and her first-hand exposure from inside the online and medical communities indulging the identity that is “trans.”Links:gender: hacked by Eliza MondegreenGraduate student researching and writing about all things gender identityhttps://elizamondegreen.substack.comFTM Over 30 | FTM Over 30A place for FTM/FTN/FTX folk over 30 to come together for support and discussion. Last Tuesday, MONDEGREEN made its way into the grid for the very first time, and so we were delighted to find an example of that -- ODETOJOY -- make an appearance today: first because we just adore ODETOJOY, and second because we love to work MONDEGREEN into a sentence, as many times as we can possibly get away with it -- so far, our record is two.

A villanelle in English concerning the misheard lyric associated with the old Scots ballad "The Bonnie Earl O'Moray"
This past Sunday I hosted Stella O'Malley of Gendspect and "Gender: A Wider Lens" and Eliza Mondegreen (writer and researcher into online trends surrounding gender and transition) to speak about the upcomming Genspect conference in Killarney, Ireland. Our conversation quickly turned to the evens in New Zealand, whre Kelly-Jay Keen (Parker Posey) was assaulted by trans rights activists at her "Let Women Speak" event. The ladies and I mused on the increasingly radical nature of gender rhetoric, and how close to violence it is taking people. Then a trans-identified woman tragically shot up a Christian school yesterday, and a planned "Day of Trans Vengeance" was quickly scrubbed off the internet—the consequence being that myself and Eliza were locked out of twitter until we removed all mention of it. This conversation was more prescient than any of us had intended. Today I talked to Mark Andryczyk, translator of Volodymyr Rafeyenko's novel Mondegreen: Songs about Death and Love (Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute, 2022). A mondegreen is something that is heard improperly by someone who then clings to that misinterpretation as fact. Fittingly, Mondegreen: Songs about Death and Love explores the ways that memory and language construct our identity, and how we hold on to it no matter what. The novel tells the story of Haba Habinsky, a refugee from Ukraine's Donbas region, who has escaped to the capital city of Kyiv at the onset of the Ukrainian–Russian war. His physical dislocation—and his subsequent willful adoption of the Ukrainian language—place the protagonist in a state of disorientation during which he is forced to challenge his convictions. Written in beautiful, experimental style, the novel shows how people—and cities—are capable of radical transformation and how this, in turn, affects their interpersonal relations and cultural identification. Taking on crucial topics stirred by Russian aggression that began in 2014, the novel stands out for the innovative and probing manner in which it dissects them, while providing a fresh Donbas perspective on Ukrainian identity. Nataliya Shpylova-Saeed is a PhD candidate in the Department of Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures, Indiana University. Learn more about your ad choices. Volodymyr Rafeyenko, a Russian-speaking novelist, was living in Donetsk when Russia invaded the Donbas in 2014. He fled to Kyiv, learned Ukrainian and wrote Mondegreen in Ukrainian. Mark Andryczyk translated the novel and was planning to bring Rafeyenko on book tour to the U.S. when Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The Mouldy Lovers: Live at The Bearded Lady, West End, 8 February 2020 The Mouldy Lovers began as a small folk project in Brisbane in 2010 when Louis Whelan and Jade Channells began making music together in high school. Matt Hsu was the next to join a few months later, gradually followed by many, many others as the group exploded into a large collective centred around the inner-city suburb of West End. With a standard backline of drums, bass and guitar, The Mouldies arsenal also includes a horn section, singers, rappers and a piano accordian, playing material inspired by Romani, Klezmer, reggae, ska and punk music. Band members have come and gone over the years, with the roster including Jen Horn, Henri Paternoster, Nicholas Downing, Caroline Townsend, Gavin Cook, Jessica McFayden, Jonathan Sri, Kat Bermingham and Steph McIntyre. Mouldies shows are a colossal and joyous force to be reckoned with. They quickly became popular as a live act around Brisbane, and their renown eventually led to shows at festivals across Australia. The band managed to squeeze into the studio several times earlier on in their career, with the early EPs "Unhinged Hijinks" and "Candy Bling Shoes String" in 2010 and "Kakistocracy" in 2011. Full-length albums "Yonder Ruckus" and "Mondegreen" followed in 2013 and 2015, respectively. The set you'll be hearing on this episode was recorded on the occasion of the band's ten-year anniversary. It was a sold-out affair that raised money for WIRES and the First Nations Communities Fire Relief Fund in the wake of recent bushfires. The Mouldy Lovers are now on hiatus, though despite what they say during this set, they have performed since, at the Tablelands Folk Festival in October 2020. Many members of the band remain busy with other projects, including Rivermouth, Matt Hsu's Obscure Orchestra, loulou and Old Semeil. Recorded by Scott Mercer Mixed by Jonathan Virgona Show production, engineering and host: Scott Mercer Originally aired via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, Sunday 24 October, 2021

Dogs Are Smarter Than People: Writing Life, Marriage and Motivation
We’ve all done it. We’ve misheard song lyrics or actual words. We’ve argued about whether someone was saying Laurel or Yanni. But there is an actual term for that. According to Merriam Webster Dictionary, a mondegreen is “a word or phrase that results from a mishearing of something said or sung.” I had a whole character in my first book that did this all the time. Sylvia Wright made up the word in 1954 when she wrote an article about it for The Atlantic or possibly Harpers (these are the two most common citings), “The Death of Lady Mondegreen.” She’d loved this Scottish song or poem that went They hae slain the Earl AmurrayAnd laid him on the green. That last line sounded like Lady Mondegreen to her. According to an article in the New Yorker by Maria Konnikova, Hearing is a two-step process. First, there is the auditory perception itself: the physics of sound waves making their way through your ear and into the auditory cortex of your brain. And then there is the meaning-making: the part where your brain takes the noise and imbues it with significance. That was a car alarm. That’s a bird. Mondegreens occur when, somewhere between the sound and the meaning, communication breaks down. You hear the same acoustic information as everyone else, but your brain doesn’t interpret it the same way. What’s less immediately clear is why, precisely, that happens. The article goes on to say, A common cause of mondegreens, in particular, is the oronym: word strings in which the sounds can be logically divided multiple ways. One version that Pinker describes goes like this: Eugene O’Neill won a Pullet Surprise. Other times, the culprit is the perception of the sound itself: some letters and letter combinations sound remarkably alike, and we need further cues, whether visual or contextual, to help us out. In their absence, one sound can be mistaken for the other. For instance, in a phenomenon known as the McGurk effect, people can be made to hear one consonant when a similar one is being spoken. “There’s a bathroom on the right” standing in for “there’s a bad moon on the rise” is a succession of such similarities adding up to two equally coherent alternatives. NME’s site has an article on the top forty misheard song lyrics and it’s hysterical. It’s a British site and you should check it out, but their top three are: Number One – Dire Straits’s “Money For Nothing.” Wrong lyric: “Money for nothin’ and chips for free.” Correct lyric: “Money for nothin’ and your chicks for free” Number 2 Wrong Lyric – Paul Young’s “Everytime You Go Away.” Wrong Lyric: “Every time you go away, you take a piece of meat with you.” Correct lyric: “Every time you go away take a piece of me with you.” Number 4 Wrong Lyric (Yes, we skipped three) – Starship’s ‘We Built This City.’ Wrong lyric: “We built this city on sausage rolls.” Correct lyric: “We built this city on rock ‘n’ roll.” Writing Tip of the Pod It’s fun to play with words, to think about sounds. This week the girls take aim at Misheard Lyrics......Bianca opened this episode with a tidbit about what a misheard lyric is called, FYI it's a Mondegreen. We then questioned America's choice in believing "donzerly" is a word. Then without further ado, Bianca regaled everyone with her own mondegreens and her daughter's ones as well!Amy was the mighty meat in the sandwich this week (which is supes weird for a vegetarian), she told of her own mondegreens of which, one was basically the only time she caved Sarah's head in (hilarious). Amy also declared herself "Lady Mondegreen". Sarah finished us all off with some absolute classics and we could not stop laughing!!! We say it every week but we really want to hear from our listeners.

Hey folks! Welcome to our 50th(!) episode!!!! This one is an absolute delight, with all the fixin's: non-sequiturs, nigh completely inaccessible science talk, and an increasingly spicy Kelsey. In this episode: Mark owns a boat, John is all mouth and no trousers, Kelsey imagines a forest theme park full of beefcakes, and Jarrett floats like a butterfly, and breaks like a Fabergé Egg. Also in this episode: Glowball, Solar Pants, Spelling by Deduction, and Bath Sous Vide

Here are a couple of musical terms you may have heard of… Earworm: that’s when a clip of a song keeps running through your head on a loop over and over and over again. Mondegreen: a misheard lyric…a great example is in Jimi Hendrix’s “Purple Haze”…he sings “’scuse me while i kiss the sky”…some people hear that as “’scuse me while i kiss this guy”…there are lots of mondegreens in popular music… I propose we need a third term…it’s that opinion that overcomes us when we believe one song sounds almost exactly like another… I know you know what i mean…you hear a new song and a brief sense of déjà vu fills your head as your brain tries to correlate its musical database with what you’re hearing…and when all the processing is completely, you might think (a) “hey! Someone ripped off [artist x]!”…or (b) “someone’s gonna get sued!”… But you know something?...it’s not that simple…far, far from it…welcome to the murky world of unfortunate sonic coincidences…

"Alexa, open Volley FM" Today’s word of the day is mondegreen. It’s spelled M-O-N-D-E-G-R-E-E-N. Mondegreen is a noun that means a misheard or misunderstood phrase. The word mondegreen was born with a 17th century poem called ‘The Bonnie Earl o’ Moray.’ It contains two lines that read: They have slain the Earl o’ Moray And Lady Mondegreen. When the last line was mistakenly heard as ‘And laid him on the green’ our word of the day came to life. Today, a ‘mondegreen refers to any phrase or song lyric that is mistaken for something else. My favorite mondegreen is contained in the song Purple Haze. For years, I thought Jimi Hendrix was saying ‘Excuse me while I kiss this guy,’ when he was really saying ‘excuse me while I kiss the sky.’ .Mondegreen is spelled M-O-N-D-E-G-R-E-E-N.

In this episode, Amy looks at the word for why people think Hendrix sung "'scuse me while I kiss this guy" with "mondegreen" and Ryan talks about why beards aren't barbaric with "barbarian". (Bonus chat included about the greatness of the Chronicles of Narnia!) Lexitecture is a podcast about words. In each episode, a Canadian (Ryan) and a Scot (Amy) each present their current favourite word and talk about its origins, current use, and try to puzzle out how it may have gone from A to B.
