Finding Hope in Seasons of Missed Expectations with Sharon Epps

“The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him.” - Lamentations 3:25We all make plans, but life doesn't always go as expected. Missed expectations can be painful, especially when we've done everything “right.” But even in the waiting, God is still at work. Sharon Epps joins us today to share how we can wait with faith and walk forward with hope.Sharon Epps is the President of Kingdom Advisors, FaithFi's parent organization. Kingdom Advisors serves the broad Christian financial industry by educating and equipping professionals to integrate biblical wisdom and financial expertise. When Life Doesn't Go According to PlanWhether it's the market underperforming, a medical bill that derails your finances, or family tension after a loved one's passing, unmet expectations can leave us reeling. But the greatest missed expectation in human history was the cross. The disciples expected a triumphant king. Instead, they watched their Savior crucified. In Luke 19:37, they praised Him; days later, they scattered in despair. In that gap between what we hoped for and what we received, we often wrestle with fear, frustration, or confusion. But it's there, right in the void, that God meets us.When our expectations are shattered, our reactions often fall into two extremes:Resignation: We lower our expectations to avoid disappointment, but in doing so, we risk losing hope altogether.Control: We force outcomes, striving and manipulating circumstances to regain a sense of stability.Neither path leads to peace. Instead, God offers a different way: waiting, but not the passive, idle kind.Psalm 27:14 says, “Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!” Biblical waiting is an active stance of trust. Pastor Kevin Queen once said, “The work God wants to do in us while we wait is as important as what we are waiting for.”Sometimes, unmet expectations reveal that our desires need to be realigned. Other times, God uses the delay to do work in us or others that couldn't happen any other way.Practical Steps for Seasons of WaitingDrawing from the book of Habakkuk, here are three practical steps for navigating seasons of waiting:Acknowledge God is at work – Even if you can't see it. Habakkuk 1:5 reminds us, “I am doing a work in your days that you would not believe if told.” Change your perspective – Ask God to help you see things from His perspective. Sometimes, hope is just a matter of viewpoint. Worship in the waiting – Worship reorients our hearts. It reminds us who God is and keeps us anchored in His character rather than our circumstances. For those walking through disappointment today, remember that God is not absent in your waiting. He is shaping, teaching, and preparing you for something greater—sometimes in ways you may not yet understand. And that's not just a consolation—it's a promise. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:Does giving to animal charities count as tithing, or is tithing explicitly meant for giving to help people?I heard that disability and SSI are going to increase their monthly payments. Is this true?I recently sold a house and didn't give the whole tithe I intended. My financial advisor suggested waiting until a CD matures in July to avoid taxes. In this powerful message from Week 4 of our Hebrews series, Pastor Steve unpacks Hebrews 3:12-19 and the danger of unbelief. Disappointment, fear, and life's struggles can slowly pull us away from trusting God. Through the story of the Israelites and their struggles in the wilderness, we learn that unbelief is not just doubt—it's a slow drift away from faith. Pastor Steve challenges us to check our hearts, encourage one another, and hold tight to the promises of God.Are you struggling with doubt? Feeling distant from God? This message will remind you that faith isn't about knowing all the answers—it's about trusting God even when things don't go as planned. Sometimes suffering lasts…and where is God in this? How do we find joy, hope, and love when life becomes undone? When life doesn't make sense, we need a theology of suffering that helps us expand to hold the brokenness & beauty of our world together. Over the last few months, we've been hearing from 8 wise, kind, and deeply authentic people about their stories of pain & sorrow, and what they've been learning about hope, lament, joy, and courage when life get really hard. In this episode, I wrap up our “When Life Doesn't Make Sense” series by sharing some of my reflections on the ways hardship shapes us, why the story we tell about our suffering matters, and how lament invites us back to a place of belonging in the bigger story that God is telling with our lives. *Some of the concepts of this episode were taken and adapted from The Theology and Psychology of Suffering by Tyler Staton. Over the last 6 years of recovering from an eating disorder, I've known one thing to be true: mental health struggles are difficult to describe, and they can be exhausting to live with. It's a daily waking up to an inner battle that can be overwhelmingly unnoticed by others, and there is a certain strength that is required to endure pain that lingers, especially when it's unseen. As we wrap up our second podcast series “When Life Doesn't Make Sense,” I share one of my stories when life hasn't made sense: receiving an eating disorder diagnosis. Whether your story holds a similar diagnosis or a different kind of addiction/mental health struggle, or if you're listening on behalf of a loved one, this episode is for you. I put some words to what mental health struggles can feel like, what my recovery journey has looked liked, and what my eating disorder has taught me along the way. I hope you'll listen in. *In this episode, I mention suicide/suicidal ideation. If you're thinking about suicide and need to talk to someone, call or text 988. If you are worried about someone, you too can call or text 988 to get resources. Remember: you matter. Please listen with care. Sometimes suffering lasts…and where is God in this? How do we find joy, hope, and love when life becomes undone? These are two questions that I've sat with over the last few months. In this episode, I set some groundwork for our next series “When Life Doesn't Make Sense” and give you a glimpse of some of the guests I'll be hosting on the podcast over the next several weeks. In many of our Christian contexts, we've internalized a belief that we demonstrate holiness by demonstrating happiness. I share some raw and honest reflections on my story as I trace the threads of this belief throughout my own life up to this point. However, as I've taken a deeper look at the life of Jesus, I'm learning that emotions are not the opposite to faithfulness. They can actually be a compass, leading us to a God who is present, even in suffering. There's a myth that is easy to buy into: that obedience to God will equal an easy life. In our modern context, many of us have absorbed an understanding of faith that requires life to work out…but what happens when it doesn't? In this next podcast series called “When Life Doesn't Make Sense,” I'll be hosting conversations with wise, deeply authentic, and kind people about their stories of pain and sorrow, and what they've learned about hope, lament, joy, and courage when life falls apart. My hope is that these conversations offer words and phrases that capture the emotions of your heart and give voice to your pain. When Life Doesn't Add Up. Today, Pastor Michael is talking about the two miracles of fish and bread.  There is the feeding of the 5,000, known as the “Miracle of Five Loaves and Two Fish,” which occurred near Bethsaida, near the Sea of Galilee.  This was in Mark, Chapter 6. The second is the feeding of 4,000, known as the “Miracle of Seven Loaves and a Few Fish,” which occurred near the region of Gerasenes, near Decapolis. That second one is a miracle that essentially falls through the cracks (or could be said to be in the shadow of) due to the more known first miracle. There are good reasons to believe these are two separate miracles.  Different amounts of loaves and fish, between the miracles. Different amounts of leftovers; the 5,000 had 12 leftovers (one for each of the Disciples), and the 4,000 had seven leftover baskets; Mark and Matthew both include these events. The disciples had one loaf of bread in the boat they were traveling in and worried it wouldn't feed everyone.   The disciples here really had a tough time feeling that Jesus could feed everyone; they have seen him feed 5,000 and then 4,000 and then they stress over a single loaf for 13 people!  Arguing amongst themselves and didn't look up.  The core thought in today's lesson: When life doesn't add up, look up!  Look to Jesus for the answer. Mark 8:21-22 (CSB Study Bible Notes) 8:21 This repeats the question of v. 17. The disciples still did not get it. This is Jesus's most severe rebuke of the disciples in the Gospel of Mark, but there was a bright spot. They didn't understand yet what Jesus was about. 8:22-10:52 In this section, Jesus completed his ministry in Galilee and began his journey to Jerusalem. It was time to leave the crowds, limit his miracles, and teach the disciples about his impending death. Verses can be found in Mark 8: 1-21. If you have more questions please contact Chris and Cheri Volk.  When God Doesn't - The Book of Habakkuk Week #1 "When Life Doesn't Make Sense" Text: Habakkuk 1:1–11 Topics: Questions, Wrestling, Objections, Frustration Big Idea of the Message: God is big enough for our questions and our objections; he invites us to bring them to him in dialogue and to trust him with them. Application Point: When we are real and honest with God and tell him what's on our hearts, he will lead us on a path that matures and deepens our faith. Discussion Questions: What is one thing that stood out to you from this week's message? Have you ever had a season when you questioned whether God saw or cared about what was going on in your life? Tell us about it. Why do you think we sometimes struggle to admit that we're frustrated with God? Can you think of other people in the Bible who struggled with what God was doing? How did they handle it? What was the outcome? When something difficult happens, or when people feel like God isn't listening, they typically do one of two things: run from God in anger or run toward God in vulnerability. Why is it important to stay in dialogue with God through difficult seasons? How can we pray for you?

His older brothers, deeply resentful of his status in the family, take advantage of the chance to get rid of him, selling him to slave traders and deceiving their father about his fate. It seems like their troubles are over. But for Joseph and older brother Judah, they are just beginning. While Joseph is accused of rape and imprisoned, Judah attempts to flee the memory of his complicity in the betrayal of his younger brother. After decades apart, the brothers will come face-to-face in a stunning role reversal that sees Joseph in a position of great power while Judah begs for mercy. Will forgiveness or vengeance win the day?Bestselling and award-winning author Jill Eileen Smith brings her considerable research and imaginative skills to bear in this vivid retelling of one of the most popular stories found in Scripture--a story of jealousy, betrayal, and a reconciliation that only God could bring about.Get your copy of The Price and the Prodigal.Jill Eileen Smith is the bestselling, award-winning author of the Wives of King David series, Wives of the Patriarchs, Daughters of the Promised Land, The Heart of a King, Star of Persia, Miriam's Song, and the nonfiction When Life Doesn't Match Your Dreams, and She Walked Before Us. On today's episode, I'm so excited to share this honest conversation that I had with my good good friend Toni Collier on “When Life Doesn't Go As Planned”. As women who have both walked through young single motherhood, divorce in the church, going back to school while working etc, we totally get what it feels like if you've had a “non-traditional” or non-linear path in life. And we wanted to take the time to dismantle any feelings of shame or failure that have tried to take hold of your story.Because sometimes it's the detours and most unexpected paths that take us to beautiful places we never would have imagined for ourselves. Because God can work ALL things together for good, amen?I'd love to hear your thoughts on this so I invite you to share and follow along at the social links below!Toni Collier is the Co-Lead Pastor of Hillsong Atlanta and founder of an international women's ministry called Broken Crayons Still Color that helps women process through brokenness and get to hope. Eric Parmenter passes on a word of encouragement from John Ch 11, a chapter in which two sisters, Mary and Martha, are mourning the death of their brother. Their experience highlights 4 problems believers often face in life: the problem of suffering, the problem of delayed answers to prayer, the problem of ‘inequalities' (perceived unfairness), and finally, the problem of the silence of God. This week’s episode is with the fantastic Jill Eileen Smith. Jill has written a number of Biblical Fiction books as well as one non-fiction work based on stories of women in scripture. Listen. This is one. wise. woman. The way she speaks about the Word of God and its role in her life, and the way she shares insight into the  history of God and His people is just incredible. This conversation is a bit like stepping into an Old Testament master class and it is AWESOME. If you’ve never read the Bible before, or if you’ve never really thought the Old Testament was for you, I hope you’ll give this episode a listen. I think you’ll find some hidden treasure just for you.  When I get the chance to hear men and women, just like Jill, who have studied the Bible indepthly, talk about the people that lived their lives within its pages, and the God who weaves it all together, it makes me so hungry to know more about the Bible. That’s the biggest reason I really enjoy Biblical fiction is because it takes stories I may know or may have never even heard and brings them to life in a way that ignites a sense of curiosity in me to dive deeper into the Word. Her newest book, Star of Persia: Esther’s Story, is the perfect picture of how to do just that.  The book of Esther is such a unique book of the Bible, ripe with details, but absent of one notable detail: the name of God. God’s name is NEVER mentioned throughout this epic tale, but as Beth Moore says “His name is all over it.” Jill does such a beautiful job diving into this familiar tale and bringing history and the activity of God and his people to life! Star of Persia just released this week so be sure and grab a copy! And just a little heads up… Jill’s book and drawing our eyes to the story of Esther is PERFECTLY timed as the celebration that is found at the end of the story, Purim, is just around the corner! We have something really special planned to celebrate and dive in to this story a little bit deeper, so be sure you’re subscribed and following along!  Find ways to get Jill’s book, listen to the conversation and subscribe wherever you listen to podcasts at the link in bio! I am very familiar with this syndrome because I have been there myself and can tell you for free that it’s a real threat and hindrance to productivity.
