This Podcast offers a pathway to continuing education via this CMEfy link: https://earnc.me/97u19s At the age of 32, Dennis Mihale, MD, made a decision that changed the course of his professional life. Although he was enjoying an exciting, rewarding career at IBM, he took a leave of absence and entered the School of General Studies at Columbia University to complete the prerequisites for medical school. With the support of his family, Mihale was accepted at the University of Miami School of Medicine. Clearly a non-traditional applicant at the age of 35, he was grateful for the school's confidence in his potential. Mihale soon proved himself to his colleagues and teachers. While in medical school, Mihale applied his background in engineering to design a flexible knee orthotic through a project sponsored by NASA. For his post-graduate training, he returned to his native New York to do a surgical internship and an orthopedic residency. He then took a year off to work at the IBM Research Center to develop an engineering model for robotic surgery. Under his direction, the project was completed, and the robot is currently used for hip replacement surgeries at the University of California at Davis. In 1990, Dr. Mihale continued his professional development and entered the Executive MBA Program at the University of South Florida. He subsequently helped to launch a health maintenance organization, and in January 1994, he started St. Augustine Health Care, a Medicaid and commercial HMO. The business prospered and ultimately achieved $30 million in annual revenues. St. Augustine was recently acquired by AvMed, and Dr. Mihale retired from that venture. Today, Dr. Mihale maintains a strong connection to the medical school and provides financial support, sponsors regional alumni meetings, and serves on the Dean's Leader-ship Cabinet. He is also involved in the development of a community clinic through his work with Tampa's Metropolitan Ministries. -=+=-=+=-=+= Are you a doctor struggling to provide the best care for your patients while dealing with financial and caregiving matters out of the scope of your practice? Today we bring another benefit of the mindfulness practice, peace of mind. So practicing mindfulness leads to getting more chances to pacify your mind. And we talk about it with Ron Francis, IBMer and host of the podcast PeaceLoveMoto (https://www.peacelovemoto.com) With Ron we touch his story into mindfulness and motorbiking, we talk about nature, we talk about our mind and how with the mindfulness practice it can be pacified. Ron is also leading us into a beautiful practice at the end. Thanks a lot for listening.
You are now at the Open Source Security Foundation - but you have a ton of experience (even as a former IBMer) from Google, to JPMorgan, and financial institutions through architecture, management, and engineering. Can you talk a little bit about your leadership journey? Let's dig into OpenSSF a bit more - we're only seeing an increase in software supply chain attacks - what is driving the OpenSSF and any particular threats you're concerned with at the moment? We know the OpenSSF has focused heavily on securing OSS and the ecosystem and even launched the OSS Security Mobilization Plan. Are you able to talk a bit about that plan and what it hopes to accomplish?OpenSSF is obviously one of several organizations such as OWASP and others helping to provide valuable resources to the industry to tackle these challenges. Are you able to speak about any active collaborations with other organizations or institutions, academia etc. or how organizations can look to collaborate with the OpenSSF?You are also a Fellow at the Center for Cybersecurity at the NYU Tandon school. Both Chris and I are also Fellows (at different organizations) - can you talk a little bit about what a Fellow does and how you got involved? Where can organizations really start though? With so many vulnerabilities, libraries, dependencies, and managing software and infrastructure, it is incredibly cumbersome for organizations to get a handle to what to work on first. Where do software teams start? Coming off of Father's Day, I noticed your LinkedIn tagline leads with Dad and Husband. How have you found success in balancing those critical roles and responsibilities while still pursuing your professional endeavors and aspirations? What does cyber resiliency mean to you?
Today we talk to Estela Quesada Zuheros, IBMer and author of the book "The Mindful Response: Lessons, stories and practices toward responsible leadership through mindfulness". In the podcast we talk about the book, about what's mindfulness for Estela and how she discovered it and what took her to deciding to start writing. A beautiful journey thanks for listening. Adapting to change and innovating responsibly is the key to success in today's business world. Companies must be able to recognize changes in their environment, understand how these changes will affect them, and then take appropriate action. Adonica Randall, President and Chief Problem Solver of Abaxent, LLC has been successful in doing just that by staying attuned to cues from social media, news outlets, and other sources of information. She believes that businesses should focus on solving people's problems while also benefiting partners, employees, and those around them. As a result of her adaptability and innovation mindset, she has been able to build an international team of remote workers who are dedicated to helping customers find what they need. Her advice for others looking for success is simple: always strive towards providing services or products someone wants as it serves no value if nobody needs it. Learn how she pays attention to news programs and stock markets. Tune in now to gain insight into navigating ever-changing markets and making positive change through remote work!Episode Highlights14:59 - You feel you know more than everybody else. Therefore, you don't have to change. That's a bad one. You're not paying attention to the things that you should be paying attention to. The cues, the things that are coming at you, and whether they're coming from social media or coming from the news. You're not paying attention to what they're saying, because it's the old X-file thing. The truth is out there. You got to know it when you see it. And if you're not paying attention, then you don't see it. You miss it and say, "I don't understand how this happened and now we have to close our business."20:00 - When I started in the 70s, there were a handful of less than 40 technology companies. They were all big names and not a whole bunch of side ones or small ones, and it was easy to control. So, you could have a business that had people who only did Microsoft. There wasn't even a Google in those days. I mean, they only did Microsoft stuff and they only did these kinds of programs. Fast forward to where we are now, there's over 5,000 of these companies. No company can have enough people on staff that do those 5,000 things. It's physically impossible. IBM can't do it and being an ex -IBMer, if IBM can't do it, nobody can do it as far as I'm concerned. So, you don't have the capacity to do that realistically.27:58 - We put ourselves in the place of solving people's problems because we like helping people. Helping people has brought our partners along with us, and they benefit from what we do. When they benefit, then their employees benefit, and all the people around us benefit. If the business has a purpose–and I listened to somebody the other day because they talked about entrepreneurs–and the thing is if you have a service that nobody wants, it serves no value. So, the goal is to always be on the front edge of something somebody wants.29:33 - Twenty years ago, this would probably be hard to do, because the communication would not be as flawless as it is now. You'd virtually be on the moon and have instant communication, so we just need to be in contact with each other. I would pretty much say everybody on the staff says, "Oh, well, I'm going to take these two or three days off, but I'm taking my laptop." That means don't bother me for miscellaneous stuff, but if something comes up, I'm available and I can get it on the laptop. Everybody sort of has that attitude. I find it interesting that these companies are freaking out about putting butts back in seats for remote workers versus not. It's really not about remote workers versus not, it's about real estate. Fracking will, in effect, remain banned under Rishi Sunak's government, as the new prime minister was committed to the policy in the ruling conservative party's 2019 manifesto. Apple has confirmed it will follow European Union legislation that sets a common charging standard for mobile phones and other portable electronic devices, the Wall Street Journal reports. “Obviously, we'll have to comply,” Greg Joswiak, Apple senior vice president of worldwide marketing, said on Oct. 25 while speaking at The Wall Street Journal's Tech Live conference, the paper reports. Separately, Apple, yesterday, asked its global supply chain partners to take more steps to address their greenhouse gas emissions and take a comprehensive approach to decarbonisation, the company said in a press release. IBM's India head has warned its Indian employees against moonlighting, saying critical client data and commercial assets could be at risk, Economic Times reports. “While an IBMer's time outside of work is their own, it also requires them to avoid engaging in activities that create a conflict of interest,” read an internal note from India managing director Sandip Patel sent to the employees, according to ET. Walmart's Indian ecommerce company Flipkart is considering raising $2 billion to $3 billion at a valuation of more than $40 billion to expand its product range in India and challenge rivals, the Mint reported on Tuesday, citing two people with direct knowledge of the matter. The world's biggest retailer is keen to bring in strategic investors for the Indian company but is also open to selling to large pure-play investment firms, according to the report which is behind a paywall but was picked up by Reuters. Existing investors Sequoia Capital India & Southeast Asia, and new investors DST Global Partners and Shopify joined in. Devtron, a startup that provides an open-source internal DevOps platform for Kubernetes adoption, has raised $12 million in new funding led by global software investor Insight Partners, according to a press release. This is Episode 66 of the Dr. Finance® Live Podcast hosted by Dr. Anthony M. Criniti IV (aka “Dr. Finance®”). Dr. Criniti interviewed Cherie Mathews, "cancerpreneur," serial entrepreneur, cancer survivor, educator, speaker, and technology expert. Cherie Mathews is a former IBMer specializing in computer engineering technology, failure analysis, research, and development. She worked on special projects for NASA and reversed engineered the latest technology before it went to market. Healincomfort is committed to helping women and men (yes, men get breast cancer too) heal in comfort and with dignity after mastectomy surgery in the battle against breast cancer with her award-winning, patented post-operative garment that allows the patient to look like a person and not a science experiment, it's all about comfort and dignity. This solution also helps manage the patient's medical drains securely and discreetly out of sight. Cherie's Healincomfort recovery garment has helped 75,000 breast cancer patients. It holds two USA design patents, one utility patent pending, and five USA Trademarks. Cherie also co-pioneered a golf program and core values for underserved public school students. She went from a beta test with 48 students and helped reach 10 million students, so she walks the walk as a believer in leaving the campsite cleaner than when she came. Dr. Anthony M. Companies and organizations have different ideas about the edge and what it means. In many respects, it is all about the perspective from which you view the Edge. Bill Lambertson, VP of Cloud, 5G and Edge with IBM provides a multi-perspective view of the Edge to Don Witt of the Channel Daily News, a TR publication. From the IBM point of view, there are four edge locations including: Service Provider Edge On Premise Edge Ruggedized Factory Edge Far Edge Bill Lambertson Listen in as Bill provides details about each of the above as well as speaking about Edge applications which can be defined as Born at the edge, Cloud out edge strategy, and Edge out approach. Bill prsents some great insight about the Edge. IBMers believe in progress—that the application of intelligence, reason and science can improve business, society and the human. IBM's greatest asset is the IBMer. They believe their strength lies in the diversity of their employees. IBM encourages creative pursuits and passions outside of work, because when IBMers can explore their curiosity, it gives all of them a new outlook on the world and its possibilities for emerging tech. Together, IBM can drive progress through meaningful innovation and action. For more information, go to: https://www.ibm.com

A big hello from Portland, Oregon. Welcome to another episode of B2B Marketing & More with Pam. Today I have a very special guest, Mark Emond. Mark is a long time IBMer, Founder and President of Demand Spring – a B2B revenue marketing consultancy. Today we are going to talk about sales and marketing alignment. In this episode: What does Demand Spring do, and what is the company about? Based on the current stage of sales and marketing (and how they work together), what are some of the challenges B2B marketers tend to encounter? What processes and tools should a CMO use to align sales and marketing? In what ways a suitable platform can improve and influence sales and marketing alignment strategy? What's next for marketers when they reach the MQL target? What does it take to create a seamless sales and marketing alignment strategy? Can marketers do sales and marketing alignment bottom up and without top management support? What is the critical role of sales and marketing alignment? What is it that salespeople and marketers still control in the world of empowered buyers? Quotes from the episode: “The buyers using digital channels, using the content available through digital channels, are self-educating through the buyer journey. They're engaging interdependently in a non-linear manner with marketing and sales. They're the ones calling the shots.” “To me, the heart of a good sales rep or a good marketer is solving people's problems. It's finding solutions to people's problems. I think having people who are more educated about what they're buying is a good thing. Because then you can have a true dialogue and discussion.” ————— If you want to chat, reach out to any social media channels or email me at hello@pamdidner.com. Anthony Blatner is a tech founder, ex-IBMer, and the founder of Speedwork Social: a top LinkedIn advertising agency. After watching a lot of companies with great products or services fail because of ineffective marketing, Anthony started Speedwork Social to help those businesses unlock their B2B marketing potential and achieve explosive growth. By blending his experience in marketing and software, Anthony helps businesses reach high-level decision makers at scale using LinkedIn Ads and technology. Having managed millions in ad spend and generated over 100,000 new sales opportunities, it is safe to say Anthony is one of the top leading LinkedIn ads experts in the industry and in a way, is only getting started. Most passionate about I'm one of those people who spends more time on LinkedIn than any other platform. My specialty is helping people with LinkedIn ads. That's what I do day in and day out. We specialize in helping create and manage LinkedIn ads and campaigns for different types of B2B organizations. Best advice for entrepreneurs The thing that I end up talking about the most is, if you're an entrepreneur and you're starting a business, talking about the sales and marketing funnel or how you're going to market your business. If you're a new business and you're starting your marketing, and if you're not seeing a direct “contact us” or “free consultation” working out, you'll probably need to lower the barrier to entry and think about focusing your content more on your customer. The biggest, most critical failure with customers Before I started Speedwork, which is a marketing agency and my current businesses, I had a mobile app development agency. Here in Austin, Texas, we built a whole lot of different mobile apps for a variety of companies. We would build software for them. What we noticed was, after you build an app, you have to put it on the App Store. Then you worry about getting downloads. We saw, in the early days of the iPhone, it was possible to put an app on the App Store, go viral, get a lot of downloads, and be successful in that way. I'd say the biggest challenge was seeing startups spend so much time and money and effort on a new app, but then not think about the distribution and the go-to-market strategy. They'd put it on the App Store and just see it flop. Biggest success with customers I'd say, for my own journey, it is focusing on LinkedIn ads. When I first started my marketing career, I tried out a lot of different areas. At the time, I never would have guessed that I would be focusing on LinkedIn. Anthony's recommendation of a tool Google Data Studio It's going to tell you something about the stats that can help you optimize campaigns. Google Data Studio itself is free. We're able to blend data from various sources. I can compare, LinkedIn numbers versus CRM numbers and sales numbers. Anthony's one key success factor It is my technical background as I approached the marketing world. I appreciate the technical skills that I have. I'd say my differentiator is being able to be comfortable with the tech side. Anthony's Mountain Since we believe that the best way for entrepreneurs to get fast, big, and sustainable success is by leading your (new) market category, and the entire entrepreneurial journey reminds me of mountaineering, I want to ask you: Is there a mountain you dream of climbing or a mountain you have already climbed? I do have a relationship with a mountain. I've gotten really into running over the last few years. I've done a bunch of random marathons and I'm part of a run club. I like to do a lot of running. Maybe entrepreneurship or startups, you know—you can go at something by yourself and it's going to take a lot of work and training by yourself to hone your skills and learn things. But there are also the times when you're going to need to rely on other people. You'll need to surround yourself with other people who are going to push you and whom...

Today's episode of the podcast is an interview with Anthony Blatner who is a tech founder and ex -IBMer. Anthony helps companies unlock their B2B marketing potential using LinkedIn ads and the power of technology. We talk all about LinkedIn advertising – the power of them, the cost of them, the different types and how you can get started with them. KEY TAKEAWAYS COVERED IN THE PODCAST Ads are there for when you are ready to throw gas on the fire – you have something that is working and your funnel is in place. You have to know who you are targeting for your ads to work properly. LinkedIn ads target people based on who they are such as their job roles or industry – which is why they are best for B2B. LinkedIn is great if you want to target a niche professional at scale. LinkedIn is a more expensive platform to advertise on. The minimum spend for LinkedIn Ads is around $10 per day but you will likely need more than this for really driving traffic. You can expect to pay around $8-$10 per click. Be really specific with your audience you are targeting on LinkedIn. Types of LinkedIn Ads - Sponsored content, sponsored email, conversation ads, dynamic ads (desktop ads) and text ads (desktop only). Start with sponsored content ads using lead forms if you are new to LinkedIn. You can be professional and personal on LinkedIn – personal content can cut through the noise and get your personality across. The best way to get started is to advertise a lead magnet with a sponsored content ad and lead form. You can only advertise from a company page on LinkedIn. Business pages on LinkedIn are good from an SEO perspective and tend to come up higher in search results. Have some recent updates on your business page before advertising but you don't need to worry about posting too much. Only your followers see your content on your business page so keep it up-to-date but more people are likely to see your content on your personal page. THE ONE THING YOU NEED TO REMEMBER ABOVE ALL ELSE… LinkedIn Ads enable you to really target specific groups of people, so you don't need to target a huge audience like you would on Facebook. For this episode of the Futurum Tech Webcast I am joined by my colleague, fellow analyst and our VP of business development, Steven Dickens, for a conversation about happenings this week in the tech world. In this episode, we covered: The leadership change at IBM this past week, with widely presumed heir apparent President Jim Whitehurst stepping down, clearly cementing IBM's CEO and board chair Arvind Krishna's position. The other material changes at IBM, with new leadership and direction in marketing, new leadership in IT, changes ahead with the Kyndryl spinoff and thoughts from Steven (a former IBMer) on what's ahead. BMC Software announcements centered on new capabilities related to security, the Open Mainframe and the newly announced Workflow WiZard tool, and the importance of (and role that) mainframe transformation is to organizations' success with digital transformation. IBM's acquisition of BoxBoat and how that's a clear indicator of the company's focus on hybrid cloud services being key to its future success.

Then, at 28:20 into today's program on our telethon bogus segment, Bob airs the audio from 22 years ago when he confronted infamous pornographer Larry Flynt on ABC's Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher. Please don't listen to that last segment with kids in the room. Even though we edited out Maher, Flynt, and Lynn Redgrave's most vile 90-second flaunt of perversion, the Flynt segment is scarcely appropriate for adults but certainly not for children. Finally, we're now over $9,000 toward our telethon goal of $50,000! We can really use your help. This episode is pastor-approved and you can view it online. Law & Order excerpts: From Detective Kevin Bernard, played by Anthony Anderson: "You got it backwards, man. The horrible thing is the rape, not the bringing of a life into the world." Assistant District Attorney (ADA) Connie Rubirosa says, "I grew up thinking Roe v. Wade was gospel. … But [now] I don't know where my privacy ends and another being's dignity begins." Executive ADA Michael Cutter, played by Linus Roache, was quoting real-world surveys when he said, "The tide has turned. Most Americans are pro-life now." Cutter virtually quoted the co-sponsor of Colorado's 2010 Personhood Amendment, Gualberto Garcia Jones, who launched the statewide ballot initiative holding his 10-day-old son at a press conference and saying, "Two weeks ago, my son had less rights than a dog or a cat." Speaking to District Attorney Jack McCoy, Cutter says, "My God, cats and dogs have more rights than the unborn." Other items of note: a detective rejected abortion after rape; fetuses were referred to as "persons;" and even the pro-choice mom who, against her doctor's advice, did not abort her premature baby and found out in the hours they had together that her child "wasn't a monster, like the doctors warned me." Det. Bernard also said, "That unwanted child could change the world. Cure cancer, be president." more... * Check Out Also: Our July 9, 2011 interview of World Tour with Guabe at kgov.com/gualberto.

If you can’t love yourself, you can’t help anyone else. Reflect on what makes you a good person, what you stand for, and where you will not bend.Identify what is broken - in the story of what happened to you, what EXACTLY got broken? If you are spiraling out of control, or is there some tiny thing you can grab ahold of (something that is positive and ever-present)? What can you control? Find comfort in that. How can you give so that you can receive? Take your brothers and sisters with you. Is there a need that is common to all of you who have walked that path? Fill that void and you can give AND receive.Where to Find and Connect with Cherie:http://www.healincomfort.com/http://www.therecoveryshirt.comSocial Media:LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/healincomfort/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/healincomfortTwitter - https://twitter.com/healincomfortYoutube - https://www.youtube.com/user/cheriebmathewsPinterest - https://www.pinterest.com/healincomfortInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/cherie_b_mathews/
"Legacy. - Past, Present, Possibility" Greetings, Summit Leaders. Legacy is a word I repeatedly hear as I listen to new Summit leaders describe their vision and journey. "I think about my legacy all the time." Summit Leader "Work harder, smarter, and with more purpose than that person, I was yesterday. Live so that my legacy is qualified not by tangibles but by how many people, communities, and organizations I positively impact." Summit Leader Legacy building is an intentional and mindful focus on the opportunity and the responsibility you have to serve clients, family, colleagues, and community. In the process, growth and advancement occur by helping others. Serving is the motivation of great leaders. It is inspiring to see a generation of leaders focusing on discovering new ways of serving others. They start with small acts of kindness done well and without expectation of reward or recognition. It is always a good time to become a thoughtful legacy builder. The focus is on people and impact. A person may look back and say, "I have a terrible past of thinking only about myself and very little about serving." Our past is not a judge of our present or a predictor of our future impact. Remembering our origin, where we came from, reviewing our past helps us understand how to improve our behavior. The process shows us the pattern of our personal growth. We then learn from our past to become the kind of great leader we desire to become. "We are not satisfied simply with a review of the past. We add to it our vision of the future." Thomas J. Watson, Sr. "There's nothing you can do about the past. But you can do a great deal about your future. You don't have to be the same person you were yesterday. You can make changes in your life -- absolutely startling changes in a fairly short time. You can make changes you can't even conceive of now if you give yourself a chance." Jim Rohn Be strong and do not lose courage for there is a reward for your work. I am motivated by new Summits to become a legacy builder. They encourage me to believe because they refer to our company's culture and its' people. For them, like their forerunners, culture is everything. "I started building my legacy when I was sixteen years old. My goal was to become an IBMer. I plan on being here a long time." New Summit Leader. The Summit Leaders help me see that our legacy is not bound by age or time served. Our body of work with clients, community, colleagues, and family best represents a legacy. Legacy building and vision create a possibility for greatness in all leaders. "The greatest satisfaction and pleasure that I have in this business is sending you out to all corners of the world, taking with you The IBM Company, because I know that you are going to represent it in the way we want it represented. I appreciate that more than anything else in connection with our institution." Thomas J. Watson, Sr. "They judge our company and our ideals by you." Thomas J. Watson, Sr. Now is the opportunity to build. Each day, we ask ourselves, "Did I help someone today? Did I make my time count?" Great leaders of all ages, make it their goal, to answer these questions with "Yes!" Victory!

I’m so stoked to bring you Laura Williams - entrepreneur, lawyer, speaker, HR business consultant and workplace investigator. We recorded this episode pre-Covid-19, and Laura's wisdom on valuing people in your businesses couldn’t come at a better time. Here you’ll hear the recurring themes around the importance of being intentional and engaged in authentic two-way communication. We go deep into unpacking what being intentional really means and how authenticity is perceived. Laura also got me thinking to back my time as an “IBMer” and now part of the University of Toronto, my pride of association – a key hallmark of organizations where people feel valued. We delve into corporations as evolving entities with teams made up of more or less strangers, that morph over time and need to be calibrated to sustain high functioning performance. I love that Laura points out that certain conflicts at work should be expected. This is diversity of opinion in action, which when mixed with grace and a good dose of mutual respect, can lead to incredibly experiences and outcomes. I especially love how Laura shines the light on her mother, her hero -and whose love changed peoples' hearts. Laura’s a real thought leader in her field. She has won numerous awards and is regularly interviewed by media on HR Law and Consulting. I so encourage you to read her recent posts on how this all plays out in our new world.
In this episode we discuss digital inclusion and who better than Melissa Sassi who is a pioneer in this space, she runs her own non-profit on top of her day job at IBM. WARNING -- AI Transcriptions May Cause Grammatically Correct People Serious Stress Nathaniel Schooler 0:18 In this expert talk I'm interviewing Melissa Sassi from across the pond she's actually an ex Microsoftie turned IBMer who brings passion and purpose to the tech industry with her belief that digital literacy is a human right. Mel It's good to see you again! So you've been all over the shop you are in Barcelona now. You're all over the place up I'm feel tired just watching what you've been doing. And I'm in my studio here. Melissa Sassi 0:58 It's it's both my blessing. And my curse. I'm talking to you from Soho House in Barcelona and I will say that I do have a glass of wine in front of me, so if you see me partaking every once in a while, don't be surprised. Nathaniel Schooler 1:14 Well I wouldn't worry I just went down to the pound shop to buy some lightning cables for my phone because the last one stopped working, and I woke up on Monday morning my iPhone was down to 25% battery. I have got no cable, I'm so busy I don't want to go out and I was like:- "Is my phone broken or is it not? Is it the cable?" So I was just like freaking out and and I literally just went down up and my friend Eric he's got like 20 cables just buy a few. Melissa Sassi 1:45 It's the story of my life. Just like the reason why I got this great idea to replace my headphones and I lost on a plane a while back and unfortunately the microphone it doesn't work if it's hanging normally. So I've I've come up with this like space craft thing that allows me to still keep these headphones and not take them back and still use them. So that's why I kind of look like a spaceship pilot right now. Nathaniel Schooler 2:09 Well, I wouldn't worry I'm in my casuals today. You know, it's, it's an office day. So we're here to talk about. "Digital inclusion." I know. That's like a massive topic. And you know, more than anyone else that I know about this topic. So tell me about it. Melissa Sassi 2:32 Yeah, so I spent the last few days on what I would say, participating in some really interesting talks. So I'm here in Barcelona, and I lead a talk yesterday, on Monday on:- "What is digital inclusion?" So I spent the last two years working on a literature review. So I know that's quite an academic term, but I've essentially combed to the internet and combed journals, academic journals on the definition of digital skills, the definition of digital intelligence of life skills and trying to figure out, you know, what is the definition of digital literacy. And if there is a common definition, if you think about it, and you go out to any dictionary, you go to UNESCO you're going to find a common definition of literacy. And we know what that is; we measure it, we track it, but if you think about it, there isn't one for digital literacy. There are many! UNESCO And if you think about it, how do you measure progress against something if you if you can't define it? And you don't have a commonly agreed framework? In terms of frameworks, even UNESCO has a couple there are many, many organizations out there that follow a multitude of different frameworks for digital skills. And what I mean by that is; think about it as a competency wheel or a series of competencies from basic digital literacy. Such as managing your online footprint, media literacy, think about it as Internet safety or privacy, all the way through to more advanced applications of digital skills, such as computational thinking, or problem solving, or productivity tools, whether that's, you know, using, Microsoft Office or Google products or any other products that help you be more productive either in the classroom or as a teacher or as a professional all the way through to building mobile applications or IoT.
In part one of my last show, I introduced you to Dr. Beverly Nelson and her husband Michael Lee Bartlett, who are the producers and hosts of an eight-week, experiential interactive online program called “Moving Abroad: A Hero’s Journey.” As you may be able to tell from its title, the program uses the work of author and professor Joseph Campbell as a framework for helping people who are contemplating a move abroad, that is, people like me and my wife Leslie. If you have yet to hear Part One, I recommend you listen to at least the first few minutes, where I talk a bit about Joe Campbell, and provide some context for what you are about to hear. Better yet…listen to all of Part One, because when you first meet Beverly and Michael, I think you’ll fall in love with them, as I have. Beverly has a PhD in Psychology and a BA in Business. She has created and directed internationally recognized Healing Centers all around the world, including what has become the largest and most comprehensive holistic center in Mexico — the LifePath Center. Michael is a fellow former IBMer and entrepreneur, having founded or co-founded successful ventures in high tech, education, real estate, video and film production. During the 1970's Michael practiced as a psychotherapist and founded Ashewood Primal Center, a vibrant therapeutic community in New York City and Woodstock New York. Together Beverly and Michael help people find and follow their life’s passions, and that is why I am so pleased to be collaborating with them. I do make a commission on the sale of their "Moving Abroad: A Hero’s Journey" course, even though you won’t pay a penny extra for it. In fact — you’ll pay less — because at the end of this show, we make an offer, exclusive to Dance listeners, that you will want to know about. I am also collaborating with them on a break-out class for discovering one’s life passions, and I can tell you first hand that the quality, beauty and efficacy of their coursework is second to none. I am proud to be associated with it. In Part One, the three of us talked about how Michael and Beverly met, and the circumstances that led them to collaborate in picturesque San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Tragically, those circumstances included the untimely deaths of dear loved ones, but out of the ashes of their sadness a beautiful Phoenix has arisen, one wearing the radiant plumes of their own love affair and subsequent marriage, and now, the birth of “Moving Abroad: A Hero’s Journey.” In this Part Two, we delve deeper into the program, and how it helps couples and individuals make a life transforming decision with greater clarity, confidence and much less stress. It’s all part of my “Move to Higher Ground” theme, which is for people like me who are seeking innovative, out of the box ways to live out our sunset years in a powerful, joyful way. So please join me in Part Two of my two part interview with Dr. Beverly Nelson and Michael Lee Bartlett, and let’s learn how to make the rest of our lives, the best of our lives.
Welcome to the first show of 2019, and what an inspiring one it is. I know you are going to really like it, because it has one of those too good to be true stories behind it, which I’ll tell in a moment. But first let me provide some context. Those of you who have been following me for a while know I am a fan of the American author and Professor of Literature Joseph Campbell, who became famous for his work on the role of myth in literature, religion and ultimately, in all of human experience. You’ll find me quoting Campbell in my “Why?” Video from a few years ago, and in a recent talk I gave on my own spiritual journey. Links to both of those videos are in the show notes. Joe Campbell didn’t really become truly famous until he was well into his sunset years, his 70’s and 80’s in fact, which is an inspiration for me as a tender 62 year old. For decades Campbell quietly taught and wrote books like the “Hero with a Thousand Faces,” gathering a small but impressive group of fans, including George Lucas, Jerry Garcia, and the poet Robert Bly, who are also among my favorites. But it wasn’t until Campbell was near death that he became known to a broader audience, including me, thanks to the films "The Hero's Journey” and his video interviews with Bill Moyers, which aired on PBS as "The Power of Myth.” It was in that last film that I first heard Campbell utter the phrase that some say summarizes his life’s work: “Follow your bliss." Now, what does that mean? I’ll take a stab at it. I believe it means leading an adventurous life of questioning, discovery, and ultimately of delight and joy, a life to which we say “Yes” to our passions and “No” to resistance. When we do that, the universe conspires with us, not against us, and a world of opportunity opens up. It means becoming fully alive. This philosophy really is at the core of the Dance mission and always has been. It’s why the words “explore” and “experience” are in my tagline. It's my personal philosophy, which is why you see me traveling on a lark, constantly learning, and taking risks, most of which “fail” in the world’s eyes. I am following my path to bliss, whatever the cost. But how do we know what our bliss is? Where is that path? How to we find it so we can start our own, personal growth journey? How do we discover where our true passions lie, what is authentic to us, and what is not? That’s where my next guests can help. Dr. Beverly Nelson and her partner Michael Lee Bartlett came to my attention last fall when I was leafing through my latest issue of International Living magazine and an article about them caught my eye. It described work they are doing on a new, online course helping people who are contemplating a move abroad, and based on the work of Joesph Campbell. Called “Moving Abroad: A Hero’s Journey,” the course helps couples and individuals make this life transforming decision with greater clarity, confidence and much less stress. The eight week, experiential interactive online program helps you define yourself, your values and what matters most in your life so that, so that no matter what you decide about moving abroad, you will move forward in a powerful, joyful way. Well…you had to know that would catch my attention! I had already produced several shows featuring guests who were either already living abroad, or who had good reasons for doing so. It’s all part of my “Move to Higher Ground” theme, one I planned on continuing through 2019. Curious about Beverly and Michael's work, I gave them a call, and a short time later we recorded the interview you are about to hear. But that’s where things get really interesting. Little did I know then that within a few weeks I would be a guest at their lovely home in beautiful San Miguel de Allende Mexico, toasting in the warm New Year with a chilled glass of tequila, and dancing well past sunset at a local club wearing a sequined mask. Too much fun! I also became a guest at the LifePath Center, an absolutely charming B&B and holistic healing center right in the center of town, enjoying the fresh food, yoga center, and healing services of the Center’s many practitioners. You can see pictures of all of this in the show notes. Even though Beverly and Michael look like movie stars, they are no lightweights. Beverly has a PhD in Psychology and a BA in Business. She has created and directed internationally recognized Healing Centers all around the world, including what has become the largest and most comprehensive holistic center in Mexico — the LifePath Center. Michael is a fellow former IBMer and entrepreneur, having founded or co-founded successful ventures in high tech, education, real estate, video and film production, and even restaurant and catering. Michael practiced as a psychotherapist in Woodstock New York for several years, helping to establish a vibrant therapeutic community there. How they met and started working together in Mexico is a story you have to hear! Meeting Michael and Beverly is a perfect example of how finding and following your bliss opens up unforeseen opportunities. Not only have I made some dear new friends that I really admire, but now we are exploring ways to collaborate on future online courses for personal growth and transformation. I’ll talk more about that in Part Two. That’s right. My interview with Beverly and Michael is in two parts, and you are going to want to listen to both. In this first part, you’ll learn how Beverly and Michael met, and the circumstances that brought them to San Miguel. Since at the time of the interview I had not yet been to the city, I was curious to know a bit more about it, and they were happy to share. Now that I have been, well let me just say their enthusiasm is justified! In part two, you’ll learn more about the course "Moving Abroad: A Hero’s Journey” itself. Beverly and Michael also have a special offer, just for Dance listeners, that you will want to know about. Whether you are considering a move abroad, or whether you decide to stay where you are, “A Hero’s Journey," based in the work of the brilliant Joseph Campbell, will give you the insights and new capabilities to move forward into a richer and more fulfilling life. So please join me in this interview with Dr. Beverly Nelson and Michael Lee Bartlett, and let’s learn how to make the rest of our lives, the best of our lives.
In this week’s episode of “Marketing Today,” Alan talks with George Hammer, chief content officer at IBM. In his conversation with Alan, Hammer discusses current trends in content creation as well as his vision for the way IBM operates in the creative realm and how it has changed “business as usual” at IBM. Hammer talks about the current trend we’re seeing of so many companies bringing create in-house and how the content creation model at IBM — “IBM Originals” — is different. “I believe that we can actually do better,” says Hammer. “And so, for me, no — we’re not building an in-house agency. And I think if you just simply think about that, you’re missing the opportunity to do something bigger and greater. And there are all sorts of opportunities that are unlocked when you have an IBMer sitting next to an IBMer working together to make something.” At the same time, Hammer recognizes what outside talent can add to the IBM mix: “There is a great purpose and role all of these external agencies and media companies can play from a talent perspective that will make them not just relevant but essential to a brand’s success.” Hammer also notes, “We are diverse in our creation model because we allow the idea and the talent to dictate which way we go.” Highlights from this week’s “Marketing Today” podcast include: Hammer talks about his background and how his experience prior to arriving at IBM impacts the way he operates. Is getting an MBA worth it?Derrick Williams, Have an MBA. I use it sometimes!Written 22 Dec 2015I have an MBA, and while I'm happy to have one, I think I got it for the wrong reasons. If I had to do it again, I would have gotten something in the hard sciences like cryptography or mathematics (just my personal choice). In the late 1990's and early 2000's, MBA's were something of a fad, simply everyone was getting one. Coupled at the time was the fact I was working for IBM, and could not conceive the possibility of working anywhere else. I loved working there and was really proud of being an IBMer. I was going to work there forever! Then the layoffs and offshoring of IBM jobs started happening, and in one meeting my then PDM (personnel development manager) made an offhand remark that everyone except the MBA's were getting laid off. While that alone didn't set me off, it was the spark to apply for business school that very day. I got into a reputable one (although not Harvard or Kellogg, just a established accredited school with good rankings), did fairly well, and got laid off from IBM anyway. My last few months at IBM was me scrambling away from technology and into sales, which I didn't like much after all, but if it kept me at IBM, maybe I could learn to like it. A moot point, I was terminated with some 10,000 other people at the same time. The MBA did help me find new work though, and helped me with my career and the ability to evaluate new projects and work better with people, and made me comfortable with leadership. I don't necessarily like being in management, but given the choice between me and someone else with little experience, I can step up.So to answer your question, since it seems you want a yes or no answer, I would say no, the MBA is not worth getting. To qualify this 'no':1) The MBA program is something you can learn on your own. Subscribe to the Harvard Business Journal, read the classic MBA textbooks, and there just might be a free MBA type course you can take online. This assumes you are interested in knowledge and not just the credentials.2) The MBA program is a lot about networking. If you get to a top ranking program like Kellogg or Harvard, you will make excellent connections, and that alone can be worth the money. Going to a good ranking but otherwise unremarkable school like I did got me some new friends, but not make connections that would be invaluable. I have connections with very nice people working as middle managers for Fortune 500 and small companies, not future presidents of the United States.3) If credentials are important, I would strongly recommend you get a 'hard' credential in science or mathematics, the kind of skill that products are built on. You can still learn the soft MBA skills on your own on top of that.So that's my take on it. Your mileage may vary!Derrick
