This week we're talking to Ryan Hall, coach, podcaster, husband, father, weightlifter, Stanford Alum, American Record holder for the Half-Marathon, and unofficial American record for the marathon! We talked to Ryan 10 days after he coached his wife, Sara Hall to the second fastest marathon run by an American woman. We talk about his experience watching The Marathon Project (and his slight FOMO) and his current passion for weightlifting, coaching, and fatherhood, then we dig into a deep conversation about mental health, performance, and how Ryan grappled with his own body image issues and comparison. Some highlights from our conversation:

In this unique episode of What’s The Difference, you’ll hear audio from Sara Taylor’s recent guest appearance on the Undeclared podcast. Undeclared is a higher education marketing podcast hosted by Allison Lanier and Scott Fogleman from Up&Up, a branding and marketing agency focused exclusively on the unique challenges and needs of colleges and universities. Scott and Allison speak with Sara about the importance of diverse, equitable and inclusive marketing in the higher education space, and how it plays a key role in creating a welcoming and safe environment for students of all backgrounds. Allison Lanier’s Bio: As a Business Development Manager for Up&Up, Allison Lanier brings her experience in sales leadership and execution from past employers such as Verizon Wireless and PepsiCo. At Up&Up, she uses her passion for people to create a positive, effective, and rewarding campaign experience for the West Sales Region. Allison is our resident mud lover and spends most of her free time at obstacle course races with her husband, David. They also enjoy various outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, geocaching, and Pokemon hunting. Scott Fogleman’s Bio: Scott Fogleman is The Director of Business Development for Up&Up and he brings together his passions for the creative world and the impact education has on students. After graduating from Clemson University, he began his career in advertising sales at The Wall Street Journal, followed most recently by a successful sales career with SYNNEX Corporation managing the Google Brand inclusive of Chrome Education. Scott’s passion for higher education began during his time with Clemson’s Undergraduate Student Government and as a member of the President’s Cabinet. At Up&Up, he leads the East Sales Region with a mission to impact change by bringing strong, positive, executable campaigns to his clients and their constituents. Outside of work, Scott takes full advantage of the wonders of the outdoors ranging from hiking, water sports, snow skiing, photography, concerts, as well as lawn care (yes, he actually loves to cut grass)! Scott also enjoys spending time with his wife, Kate, their cat George, and friends and family. Sara Taylor’s Bio: Sara Taylor earned a master’s degree in Diversity and Organizational Development from the University of Minnesota. She served as a leadership and diversity specialist at the University of Minnesota for five years and as director of diversity and inclusion for Ramsey County, Minnesota for three years. Sara is the founder and president of deepSEE Consulting and has worked with companies as large as Coca-Cola, General Mills, 3M Company, AARP, and numerous others. She has a new book, “Filter Shift: How Effective People See the World,” that explores how our unconscious is actually making choices and decisions for us, all without our knowing — and how to change that. What you’ll learn about in this episode: Why Sara and her team at deepSEE Consulting define diversity as “differences that make a difference” What unconscious bias is and how, of the millions of pieces of information we take in every second, we are only conscious of around 40 of them Why bias isn’t just about negative feelings toward marginalized groups but also includes positive feelings toward dominant groups What the five stages of cultural competence are and how each stage affects our ability to navigate difference How Sara helps people overcome feelings of self-consciousness over their unconscious biases and move forward How diversity can be included in marketing in an authentic and effective way, and what organizations should avoid doing Why diversity alone isn’t enough to improve productivity, and why a team’s cultural competence makes a big difference Why developing cultural competence is a process that starts with your own subconscious bias first How to best deal with situations in which people push back against diversity and inclusion work, and why commonality is the key Why equality isn’t the same as equity, and how doing the work can impact all aspects of an organization Resources: Website: www.theundeclaredpodcast.com Website: www.upandup.agency Email: contact@upandup.agency Scott Fogleman’s LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/foglemanscott Allison Lanier’s LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/allison-lanier Facebook: www.facebook.com/upandupagency Twitter: https://twitter.com/upandupagency @upandupagency Additional resources: Website: www.deepseeconsulting.com Twitter: @deepseesara

Episode 117 Today I am speaking to Sara Willerson and we have an amazing conversation about how horses heal humans. Sara B. Willerson, LCSW is a private practice therapist and life coach in North Texas. Horses have always been part of her life. After completing a Masters in Social Work from Smith College School for Social Work she was given a book by her father, The Tao of Equus, by Linda Kohanov. Upon reading this book, Sara knew that her passion and purpose had finally joined up! After completing an Equine Experiential Learning apprenticeship program with Eponaquest in 2003, she created Horses, Heart & Soul®, an Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy and Life Coaching practice for teens and adults located at WolfTree Ranch in Pilot Point, TX. Sara’s professional experience has focused on working with clients who have experienced trauma, grief and loss, and life transitions. Her program offers individual, family, couples, group, and workshop sessions for adolescents and adults. We talked about how Sara sees horses as natural healers who help us reconnect to our entire being – spiritually, emotionally, mentally and physically. And how horses remind us there is more to us that what we present to the outside world. Their unconditional awareness and acceptance of our experience is felt from the moment we step into the pasture with them. Horses are natural geniuses when it comes to identifying and sharing those pieces we keep to ourselves. Through this awareness, they help us reconnect with our heart and soul. I invite you to listen in so you can discover how horses heal humans, a magical story of love and wisdom. Highlights you won’t want to miss: Why Sara made the decision to spread the message of the power of horses. How Sara discovered her love for horses. How at the age of 14, Sara was finally able to have her own horse (Pooh). How Sara knew at a very young age that there was something very special in her relationship with her horse and why she kept this to herself. How everything shifted for Sara when she was introduced to the work of Linda Kohanov about the benefits of partnering with horses in a therapeutic setting. Why Sara trusted her new path and how that trust gave her power. How Sara made her dream come true when she was able to have her own place to live with her horses and create a healing space for people to come to. Sara’s horse shares a message about the role of horse wisdom in healing humans. Why the heart and not the mind is what helps you connect with who you really are. Why it’s key to embrace your weird because when you don’t it constricts who you really are. Sara shares a live meditation inspired by horse wisdom. How each horse has their own gift to share with the world. The lesson you can learn from horses about letting go by getting out of your head and connecting to your heart. One of my core beliefs in building a successful business is that no one should do it alone. Of course, it’s your business, so you can choose your own path, but as the saying goes, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” Although, let me fill you in on my experience...going alone doesn’t lend itself to going fast, either.  My belief is that when you have the ultimate trifecta of support, ongoing education, and accountability, you go a lot further a lot faster. And to prove that point, I’m diving into an experiment with a couple of the women inside my Growth Factor high-level group coaching program to show you the *real* behind-the-scenes of what it takes to build a seven-figure spa. In this episode, we discuss: Why Sara and Melissa want to share their year-long journey to growing their spa to seven figures  A look at what their first year in business has been like (that’s right, these ladies are still in year one!) How they’re approaching year two and they’re biggest goals they’re planning on tackling first within the Growth Factor program To read the full show notes, head to: http://www.addoaesthetics.com/blog/106

Getting published in magazines can be huge for an interior designer’s business? So how has one designer, who’s only been in the biz 18 months, been published so much? Find out on today’s episode! Sara Lynn Brennan is an award-winning entrepreneur, CEO and Principal Interior Designer at Sara Lynn Brennan Interiors, the first and only full-service interior design firm in Waxhaw, North Carolina who specializes in transitional design. Her very first feature was her own house, and from there she was able to establish a relationship with that editor so her client work could be featured as well. And how did she do that? By making it very easy for the editor to work with her. She keeps in touch with editors to foster a relationship, and she lets them in early in the process, sharing vision boards so they know what she’s working on for their upcoming editorial calendars. How does getting published change things? The short answer from Sara is that it doesn’t. That doesn’t mean it hasn’t been good for business, but she says she hasn’t seen any clients come through her door saying, “I saw you featured in this magazine.” But the benefits go beyond direct client bookings. For instance, Sara throws events in her hometown, so people can “meet the designer” who has just been featured in a magazine. And getting into magazines has helped her establish her aesthetic in a clear and easy-to-communicate way. So This Is My Why

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 1, 1970 83:29

Today's guest is Sara Holden and she, well, has been shot, strangled, bludgeoned, suffocated & died in pretty much every imaginable way possible on the big & small screens! Sounds crazy? Not at all. She's pretty used to it, given her career as a Hollywood stunt actress! A quick look at her IMDb profile will reveal an impressive CV with appearances in I'm Your Woman, Batwoman, General Hospital, Chicago Fire, Chicago PD, Veronica Mars, NCIS, American Horror Story, Venom, The Walking Dead, Transformers, Divergent, Man of Steel, Oz the Great and Powerful, Sons of Anarchy… the list just goes on and on!! *But who exactly is Sara Holden?* Sara hails from Detroit, Michigan and she always had a love of theatre while growing up. And while she had no idea what stunts even were back then, retrospectively, it seems as though it was all meant to be. She was a tomboy not afraid to get down and dirty. Played soccer, gymnast and also competitive cheerleading before joining the women's rugby team in Western Michigan University. The story of how she even ended up in the rugby team is pretty hilarious and involves, surprisingly, the offer of beer! And being smashed into the ground at every match (which she seems to relish! ;)). *Moving to Los Angeles* Upon graduation, she did an 8-month advertising stint before deciding to quit to give acting a shot. Her reasoning? I've always wanted to do this acting thing... and if I don't do this now, I don't know that I'll ever do it. It was kind of like my time, let's just take the jump leap of faith, if you will, and just see what happens. And so I did, I just moved to Hollywood. And I packed whatever I had into my car and drove out there. But you know what makes that decision especially remarkable? I didn't know anybody. I did not have a job. I did have some money saved up… and I remember I kind of told a little white lie to my parents and said that I had this job. I didn't really have a job at all... And yeah, I just drove out there and got a job as a hostess in Beverly Hills and just started networking. One of the many pieces of evidence of her “what is the worst that can happen?” go-getter attitude. *Establishing A Presence In Hollywood* Establishing herself in Hollywood with no contacts, no job and more importantly, no SAG card, was difficult. And we explore: * The art of networking in LA/Hollywood; * The realities of being one of the many faceless “extras”; * How she first discovered the world of stunts; * How she got into the exclusive invite-only stunt training facility run by circus-trained Bob Yerkes; * What it was like doubling for Pamela Anderson & executing her first professional stunt on a 80mph speed boat; * The turning point where she knew she could “make it” in Hollywood; and *The Realities of Life as a Stunt Actress* We also get real on some of the challenges, including * How she got booked onto stunt jobs; * How much stunt person make & the realities of the Hollywood freelance life; * The competitive nature of the stunt industry; * How she handles the injuries & risks taken on every day; * The difference in career opportunities between men and female stunt workers; * Why Sara is self-funding a car flip gag; * The role of social media in as a stunt person; * Managing life at home with young children during the COVID-19; * What the future could hold for stunt work in a social distancing era; and * What you should do if you want to be a stunt actress in Hollywood. For more details, check out https://www.sothisismywhy.com ( https://www.sothisismywhy.com/ ) And don't forget - if you're looking to flip your own cars, make sure you give Sara a holler first!!
