On his daily First 10 podcast, Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey reacts to news that the Penguins have waived goalie Tristan Jarry with the intent of sending him to their Wilkes-Barre/Scranton affiliate in the AHL. Why was it the right move for GM Kyle Dubas, despite Jarry's lucrative contract? Will the NHL goaltending group be better moving forward with Joel Blomqvist and Alex Nedeljkovic? Was former GM Jim Rutherford picking Matt Murray over Marc-Andre Fleury still the right move in hindsight, given what it led to with Jarry? How much does the Jarry contract taint Dubas moving forward? And what can the Penguins expect from star Evgeni Malkin amid his return?
NATE BENEFIELD JOINS DAWN LIVE! - NATE SPEAKS ON THE NEW CAMPAIGN FROM THE COMMONWEALTH FOUNDATION PUSHING TO HELP PA STUDENTS AND MOVE AWAY FROM FAILING SCHOOLS... Commonwealth Foundation Launches Billboards Spotlighting Need for Lifeline ScholarshipsCampaign urges Pennsylvanian parents to help rescue kids from failing schools. Harrisburg, Pa., April 1, 2024 — The Commonwealth Foundation today launched several digital billboards across Philadelphia promoting the Lifeline Scholarship Program that would allow students to escape Pennsylvania's lowest-performing schools. Kicking off an ambitious awareness campaign, the ads urge parents to visit LifelineScholarships.com to explore the potential of the program's proposed Educational Opportunity Accounts (EOAs) for their kids. The three digital billboards will run for the next 12 weeks at major locations along I-76, I-676, and the Schuylkill Expressway in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Multiple other billboards have slated launches in the Pittsburgh, Wilkes Barre/Scranton, and Harrisburg areas. "Every child deserves access to an excellent education," said Erik Telford, the senior vice president of public affairs at the Commonwealth Foundation. "Lifeline Scholarships empower families to do just that by allowing education funds to follow the student. Parents get to choose the schools that best meet their kids' needs." Lifeline Scholarships, proposed by the state legislature last year, would establish EOAs for students trapped in schools ranked in the bottom 15 percent of the state's educational institutions. In these failing schools, fewer than 10 percent of students test proficient in math, and just 25 percent reach proficiency in English. "Too many kids are currently trapped in failing schools. Lifeline Scholarships would provide parents $10,000 to send their child to a better and safer school,” Telford stated. "We want to make families aware of the transformational impact of Lifeline Scholarships so that when they become available, parents can take advantage of the new opportunity to secure their children's future." Funded separately from existing education formulas, Lifeline Scholarships would not impact public school budgets. Though Gov. Josh Shapiro vetoed the legislation in August 2023, the latest polling reveals a strong majority of Pennsylvania voters (61 percent) believe the governor should enact Lifeline Scholarships. Visit LifelineScholarships.com to join the growing coalition demanding real choice and educational freedom in Pennsylvania. On October 16, Audacy Inc. made a very intriguing move by switching an AM serving Hazleton, Pa., and a FM serving the Scranton-Wilkes Barre area to a Spanish-language format heavy on bachata music popular with Dominicans and Puerto Ricans. Some may wonder why Audacy made the move, as Northeast Pennsylvania isn't known as a Latino hotbed among Hispanic marketing and advertising pros. Full Hour | In today's second hour, Dom leads off by discussing a Republican trend toward supporting Democratic Gubernatorial candidate Josh Shapiro, lamenting that there are multiple reasons that the candidate would be highly detrimental to our State. Dom tells about Shapiro turning a blind eye to the crime in Philadelphia under Larry Krasner, reminding listeners of the power granted his way by state lawmakers to step in, in which he continuously refuses. Then, Giordano tells about an Inquirer article that tries to reframe the narrative around Shapiro's take on Coronavirus, now trying to portray the candidate as somebody fighting against the overbearing masking and edicts in schools. Then, Giordano loops back to the clip of John Fetterman saying that people of color are less likely to carry an ID card, calling out the comment as racist. Then, Dom asks whether, if Fetterman is elected, Pennsylvania will have the most entitled representatives, but Dan throws out New Jersey's Booker and Menendez as close competitors. Then, Representative Dan Meuser checks in to the Dom Giordano Program to preview an upcoming appearance by President Joe Biden in his area, appearing in the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area. First, Dom asks for Meuser's opinion on the spike in crime across the state, with Dom noting that he predicts crime and justice to be a big portion of Biden's speech. Then, Giordano and Meuser hop into a discussion about the midterm elections in Pennsylvania, with the Congressman offering his opinion on both John Fetterman and Josh Shapiro, two Democrats running for high office in PA. In the third hour of today's show, Dom leads off by playing back a clip from today's Joe Rogan podcast, with Rogan telling a guest that if Michelle Obama were to run in the upcoming election, she'd win against former President Trump or any other conservative. Giordano offers his thoughts on another potential Obama candidacy, and tells what he thinks conservatives need to do to win in the next Presidential election. Then, Giordano plays back a clip from conservative host Candace Owens, who said that Trump is pro-vaccination solely because he's old and does not know how to use a computer. After that, Lou Barletta, gubernatorial candidate in Pennsylvania, rejoins the Dom Giordano Program to reveal concerning information about illegal immigrants being flown into Pennsylvania. Barletta, along with U.S. Rep. Dan Meuser, are looking for answers on alleged reports of four airplanes carrying undocumented immigrants, which landed at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton airport over the past two weeks. Barletta tells that after inquiring about the issue, he's only heard crickets from the state legislators. Barletta called for the information after a president of an aviation company flying out of the airport confirmed that the four flights arrived between December 11th and the 25th. Giordano digs a bit further, asking Barletta whether he knows the final destination of the immigrants, and tells the negative implications of sneaking something like this under the noses of Pennsylvanians. In this episode, recorded December 5th, 2021, Alex begins by recounting the changes in Syracuse's schedule that occurred this past week. Due to COVID-19 concerns that are mostly centered around the AHL's Atlantic Division, the Crunch saw their games on December 1st, 3rd, and 4th postponed. The games were against Rochester and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. The postponements also saw the rescheduling of Syracuse's Teddy Bear Toss to this Wednesday against Cleveland. The postponements were particularly disappointing for a team hoping to find some solid footing during this period of home games, as going into the week of Thanksgiving Syracuse was scheduled to play six home games between November 24th and December 8th. Alex then discusses former Syracuse forward Taylor Raddysh's first NHL goal, a shorthanded tally that really showed off the talent he honed in the AHL. She also mentions the good reviews Gabriel Fortier has been receiving from his NHL debut, and briefly discusses the return of Sean Day to the Crunch's blue line. Alex ends the episode with a new "Ask Me Anything" (AMA) segment. She covers some Harry Potter questions, a few personal inquiries, and also discusses her favorite AHL logos from Syracuse's history and from the league itself (Hint: Her favorite involves a Moose, and not of the Rochester variety).. Alex appreciates everyone who sent in questions!

GLIM DROPPER Usually putting together a band with a minimum of three or four members is a daunting task. You’ll get your fair share of the following tropes: players who only want to do cover gigs on the weekends; players who have had it with covers and only want to do originals; players who are willing to fill in for a while, but leave when they feel the money or the music isn’t good enough; players who can’t even play. Philadelphia-based band Glim Dropper elected to eliminate those headaches by taking advantage of modern musical technology and performing and recording as a two-piece unit of Dan Kauffman on lead vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass, and loops, and Rob Schnell on drums, samples, and backing vocals. The pair creates a full organic band sound that they call “forward thinging retro rock and roll” – meaning that while they’re utilizing familiar classic and alternative rock sounds and feels in their music, they’re not a couple of luddites who’d prefer to record and release their music on shellac 78’s or Edison cylinders! Their well-written and produced album Last Days Of Analog harks back to the days before being a producer meant you took a band’s recorded performance and chopped, cut, and pasted the thing into a platable mess intended to be overplayed on corporate terrestrial radio. Highlighted songs: Last Days Of Analog, Make It, Happy Now GRACES DOWNFALL Very recently, NEPA-based band Graces Downfall called it a collective career after 12 years and three albums, with the various members spinning off into two different cover band units. Their breakup this past February left a small void in the otherwise vibrant Wilkes-Barre/Scranton original music scene, but there’s no denying the impact that Graces Downfall had on that very same scene. Their third and final album Change. Adjust. Continue, which was funded mostly by a crowdfunding campaign in 2014, ends their discography on a creative high note with their trademark blend of heavy riffs, stready rhythms, and anthemic vocal melodies. Highlighted songs: Letter To Lainey, Jesus Crutch, Strumpets Of course the producer forgot to include: Dammit! has been playing the San Francisco Bay area (and beyond!) music scene for over 10 years. Originating from the basement of guitar thrasher John Gillette, the goal was to start a band that had the sound of Metallica and the heart of Alice in Chains; a mixture of Punk, Rock/Metal and Grunge; and John Gillette did just that. Featuring Darker and Darker Eric Gibson is an Austin, TX recording artist who writes, performs and produces his own unique brand of Alternative music. Eric was born in Richmond, VA, and raised in the mean streets of Gainesville, FL. He has been playing guitar, a variety of stringed instruments and keyboard since the early 90's. He has performed music, theatrical poetry readings, and performance art in venues all over Florida, DC, and Virginia.
