My guest on today’s show is a senior cloud advocate for Microsoft.  As a member of the Azure engineering team, he engages with the community and customers around the world to share his knowledge and collect feedback to improve the Azure platform.   Prior to working for Microsoft, he was a Lead Architect for a consulting and engineering company in Switzerland.   EPISODE DESCRIPTION: Phil’s guest on today’s show is Thomas Maurer. He works for Microsoft as a senior cloud advocate. In that role, he engages with customers and the community to use the cloud to transform their businesses. He is part of the Azure engineering team. Thomas has been awarded the Microsoft MVP (Most Valuable Professional) Award, several times. He is also an accomplished public speaker and the author of two books. Over the years, he worked as a software and systems engineer for several companies. Prior to joining Microsoft, he was the Lead Architect for a Swiss engineering and consulting firm. Maintaining a positive attitude helps you to get through those times and make what you are working on a success. Over the years, Thomas has noticed that negativity attracts negative things. The mindset of the workforce has a huge impact on a company. Of course, at times, things get tough, but being optimistic keeps you going and takes you through it. (6.26) – Can you tell us about your worst career moment? And what you learned from that experience. Many years ago, Thomas spotted a job he really wanted. But, he just assumed he was not experienced enough to land the role, so he did not apply. Instead, he set his sights lower and joined another company. When he rang a friend to tell them about his new job, they thought he was crazy for taking it and told him that they could have helped him to land the job he really wanted. They said so in a nice way, but it was still a bit deflating. At that point, Thomas realized that not applying for his dream job was a mistake. It felt pretty bad, but he had said yes, so he started working for the other company. Only then did he realize how big a mistake he had made. They did not have the right type of projects for his skill set and what he wanted to learn. So, for a few months, his career progression slowed. Fortunately, not long afterwards, he was offered his dream job. But, he played things cool and told them he wanted to sleep on it. This gave him time to think and be certain that he was not making a mistake. In the morning, he took the job, which turned out to be one of the best decisions he has ever made. (10.30) – What was your best career moment? Of course, landing his dream job was a big moment. So, was getting his first Windows Insider MVP award, in 2012. He is especially proud of the fact that one of the chairmen nominated him. Thomas loves working with the community, speaking, blogging and helping others. But, it felt great to have his efforts recognized. Over the years, Thomas has won several MVPs and other awards. (14.39) – Can you tell us what excites you about the future of the IT industry and careers? The never-ending variety of the projects you end up working on keeps things exciting and interesting. But, Thomas thinks the changes cloud computing has brought have been particularly exciting. Better still, there is more to come. He also sees machine learning, IoT, 5G and AI bringing in another wave of drastic changes. The list of new opportunities this tech opens up is endless. (16.52) – What drew you to a career in IT? It was Thomas’ love of gaming that laid the foundations for his IT career. Through it, he got into building his own computers and optimising the operating system. (17.30) – What is the best career advice you have ever received? The best career advice Thomas given was not to complain too much. Instead, work to make things better. (17.47) - Conversely, what is the worst career advice you've ever received? Someone once told Thomas to stretch the truth a bit. Thomas does not feel comfortable doing that. He believes that if you take that approach, in the end, people will lose trust in you. (18.19) – If you were to begin your IT career again, right now, what would you do? Thomas says he would become a data scientist, working with AI and machine learning. (18.50) – What are you currently focusing on in your career? Of course, Thomas is focusing on adjusting to a different working environment. His role as a cloud advocate requires him to spend a lot of customers listening to their issues. So, at the moment, he is honing his listening skills. It is vital that he truly listens to what they are saying. If he fails to do this he cannot make the right decisions. (19.38) – What is the number one non-technical skill that has helped you the most in your IT career? Thomas feels that is his presentation skills. It was a tough skill for him to learn because he was a very shy person, but he is glad that he did. (20.26) - What do you do to keep your own IT career energized? Being a person who wants to know it all helps to keep Thomas’ career energized. He finds being on the bleeding edge keeps him interested and engaged. (20.59) - What do you do in your spare time away from technology? Thomas enjoys running, playing badminton and going to the gym. They offer him the chance to completely switch off from work-related things.  (21.50) – Phil asks Thomas to share a final piece of career advice with the audience. Never give up on the things that are important is Tomas’ parting piece of career advice. Not everything will come easily, but, in the end, you will get there. [0:47] Delayed a whole bunch of things we lost power in our city I still don't have heat in my office, HVAC unit got blown off the building also two trees down nobody died here but they're six tornadoes a touchdown lot of Destruction and a lot of it was around $0.02 around my office and there was places in the city without power for up to 5 days i just prayed that could of solomon trail goes through a district substation right, but, tomato sauce with the week of ignite we're supposed and we were supposed to do dailies from ignite we have no power we were dealing with other issues, so we didn't do our foreign correspondents Rafael and the boys formula coffee clutch. We weren't able to connect with them so we didn't covered nightfall not there's a get well tomatoes fault, the tornado then we did actually record an episode that fell apart it was a awesome recorded it that way from eight with with tactical issues and then call and when had a death in the family that you look that so, and how long since your last episode. Where do you want to start David do you want to go right into a product with you our last episode I talked about the surface go that I tried in New York City, come, I see you've got something that you have a service call if you have a Surface tablet that had a crack in the screen that I happen to buy the extended warranty on and, they don't just fix it they just give you the money back or so I had, money burning a hole in my pocket so I picked up one so which model to get. Eight one twenty eight i think it would be silly to buy the four k for sure the forty-eight would run while but eventually sure is that the one with the sst years at the one with the. The best hard drive healthy ssd1 called UCM EMC, communication not buying these things for performance correctly so you didn't get the Costco on the cost going to make it out quite nicely, I only have 4 gigs of memory 128 storage I'm not sure what type of storage so that's it ideal combination but my reef my rebate of $330 wasn't Acosta how much of the total amount. [4:18] It's about $800 - 300 Canadian Canadian dollars. What's. Had its ups okay to tell us about what he thinks first impressions on but we didn't do it you did do it on boxing anything but what you numbers up so it is the it's the exact same for form factor as my apple. IPad 2 which is probably for 5 years old exact same Corners almost the exact same screen size the exact same thickness which is. [4:57] So you a little bit odd does it looks more like an apple from up front so you think that they bought a bunch of refurb to iPads and slammed slammed surface bits in them yeah, yeah it's a conspiracy, really the only thing I can see, they should have put a bit of extra weight in that and add the battery last a bit longer. Set the fuck up, okay not mistaken what was that Neva Neva scan Beacon, caca the eighties so any i can get use to the keyboard, yeah you know for when it does it slot better than any touch typing on screen would be so i don't think that's really a challenge with the keyboard for say that microsoft dismayed okay i think it's just a problem with the size of a ten inch form factor, so really there's no point it's. [6:14] Not a must-have for sure cake so how much will you say the battery is not fantastic how much you getting out of it like four hours really, real well that's disappointing very disappointing. [6:30] God wanted to look it up like that whole day out of my $69 Canadian $69 Kindle Fire HD. [6:41] I can get more than that have an iPad I can have more than that out of my circle you definitely get more of an iPad Surface connector so you know when you're at your desk, you can get your external monitors bigger keyboard now that really bad right here and I'm like the new Surface spices for Microsoft it as a USBC will charge it will well, what was so I charged it with my regular cell phone adapter, and it charged so I think the fact that I charged it all was good okay but I have more powerful you, PC device adapters light comes with the laptop and the docking station for Adele and those will go. Those will charge quickly I'm sure but I was surprised like this with the phone adapter it was actually charging. To be hand if you're stuck somewhere as earned don't have lives in glass for the new discharging. I just turned it on and left okay I wouldn't be surprised it would just break even fill this wouldn't even make up across Continental flight, battery wise. Alright so that's very very disappointed, when does a pass or fail. It depends on the surface pen to surface, bail bondsman someday, buy one as soon as I get my TSA check but just very disappointing. [8:10] It is quite expensive to so really if it was around $500 with a keyboard instead of 800 with keyboard. [8:19] I think that would bust my that i think what i'd rather do is buy a one of the news surface laptop i think three pilling from a whole ji at for on like three hundred dollars for yeah at four and on on on on at the top and. If the i seven or is that they don't i nine yet so now okay. Alright so that's it for that show we move on, new story of the week now you didn't mention what your, keep or case is made out of hearts wanna find corinthian leather is or so ago can them thirsty here. The conference the us there was Microsoft ignite Microsoft ignite for the first time in quite a number of years no surface Miss were there, so what did I say about that. All that introduce the new version of office that's basically a subset of officer sixty five four on perm customers when from cousin has a cute, what else did you go to breakfast so off the oven office twenty nineteen is now available for mac and pc. [9:38] Those of you that are not falling biscuits confusing the office three sets on a new one that you wanna have right write his office three sixty-five just been out for a few years and depending on what skew of officer sixty five you have the disk anyone for example you do not get an office pay you'll get any office off or, UCB online office off we don't get a local install office software so you have to go to the E3 or Business Essentials or business by mistake. It's like four bucks so you don't have to have it but my mistake would not be one of them yes right PC, example use water email so depending on which version of office to sixty five you buy you also get five per user five installs of microsoft office is close, Pro Plus father's claim Office 365 I believe in. [10:33] It's part of your license as long as you're paying your light your monthly license fee you have usage rights but what if you stop paying. Have you straight anymore that this is the perpetual license so for instance if you bought office, 2007 back in 2007 or 2008 or whenever you whenever you want it you could still run it that Microsoft support anymore it'll give you updates or anybody but you own it you can run it forever. Legally run it forever however office365 you stop paying your monthly you can't legally run anymore. [11:09] Talk a little bit about the differences so that's the licensing side of it right so office twenty nineteen is based on the feature set more or less that we saw in late spring early summer, in Office 365 Office 365 gets updated on a, randomly, hopefully not random well someone's got a plan but lisa mc maybe collectively sure so, features are the features come out regularly and it's always upgrading and it's really focused on integrating with the rest of the office to sixty five sweet, which is that online experience and that cloud experience not to say that office 2019 does, lie to connect a cloud services but. What, but Office 365 will keep getting more and more cloud looks to other services like yeah I after she learning and it whatever new functionality comes out in Office 365. [12:11] So that's one big piece of news and and what what's the next Feast well that's good news alright so, ex off now uses a i'll help you create a better presentation spreadsheets and things like that in the office apt to look at what you're trying to do it suggest a better way to present it. It's always been suggestions but now looks like yeah looks like you're trying to write a letter but a lot more though it's looking at the. Practices for presentations and spreadsheets and charts and things like that so be fun to try that out. I have a friend who's going to company that's focused on doing just that for businesses to make your presentations better so really like to have to take that I'd like to see what his thoughts are on it, so we can talk then we talk a lot the last episode yes the last lost. [13:17] I am, this allows you to have your virtual desktop and let Asher as opposed to having to setup terminal terminal servers are those her on hold on hold on, talk about sessions vs instances okay. Olden days or what people when using terminal server or what we on when i call have a session based computing you have a single wes, air by many users right right so they can all connect to it can like that, Mainframe concept and to be honest the first instance of this on Windows electrical twin frame and it was a modified kernel buys Citrix. [14:12] Yes and I thought it was a very clever. Back into the 80s that did this stuff on PCS to. A tarp for Dawson for a long time, we were talking about virtual desktops were talking about what, colloquially people call vdi VMware coined the term vdi virtual desktop infrastructure what it is maybe I were talking about multiple. [14:47] Dances so there be multiple virtual machines and i each person can x to one persistent or not, stop spread today appear and disappear maybe they're just there for you at the next. Get well Windows 7 or Windows 10 OS 8.1 if you really must each user gets their own or, whatever else you want to call this other words for that. That one machine with multiple users and that's a great Segway into our next item that will talk about but why is this important for the first time now. Windows 10 is available as a paid service directly from Microsoft and Azure and you can have, stop there so sorry technology change you could have always run, to bring your license and your license to allow you to do that night just by making us buy it and turn it off and not using it all sorts of things like that so. [15:57] Basically promoted desktops in someone else's Data Center, tornado outage here people are using that they can accept connect to edgerton woden. [16:08] Okay now the next one is Microsoft brings multi-user virtualization to, windows and office instances where each user gets thrown instance of now in Windows 10. You can use Windows 10 essentially as what we used to call a terminal server to have multiple users connect to Italy travel each have a session Windows 10 not Windows Server that's correct now why is that important David. Because Windows 10 Windows Server are very similar to each other. But not the same exactly so in the olden days, last month if you wanted to do session-based Computing yeah you would have to do it on a Windows server and it had it had present it has session Services right and remote desktop services that you would turn on and you would uninstall your software you have to jump through hoops to install off we're not big Hoops but you install software, and let people connect to it up Here's the catch alright. [17:14] When developers build applications for Windows and user Windows Windows 10 or Windows 7 that's a good example of say, Adobe Photoshop the developers built that they tested it on Windows 7 latest on Windows 8 the test on Windows 10 they got it logo certified, with all the criteria and then some sysadmin somewhere takes that app, add fries to shoehorn it on to Windows Server which is very similar but not the same, and it may or may not work and then you have to go through all sorts of remediation and things like that, application for certified to work with the remote desktop services but others were not so is very limiting. And you get sometimes really funky heirs. [18:01] And then gift because the cold is writ for windows ten and you try to run on windows server and may or may not work. [18:11] But my sister will definitely so now that's that's gone but secondly you don't have to worry about the cost Associated Windows server. [18:23] And and although there would be a conditional class here for extra license, but of course not. The whole server licensing right, how you could run a server on a desktop but if we all did. And a lot of small businesses are afraid of servers, a server that's, yeah that happened in your office before we're kilobit drive you places cuz people hitting afraid of service for so log but. [18:56] They don't work anymore exactly yes so that's the news about Windows 10 and. Multi-user virtualization as well as virtual desktop to similar related but different announcements. Okay alright. [19:19] Just after it night october second at with the west microsoft heads three three new i just for new. 1 2 3 updated products. So the first one they update it was the surface laptop and I'm very excited by that it has everything you'd want except USBC Port that's right. Is that believe there is one of LT1 block yes everything everything's available black. How's the way they will have a surface pro and black as well they have a lot, so yesterday the new laptop and its exact same time the Old it's just. No thinner nothing Cur and more powerful 1.8 times as powerful and you know the old one. Obviously it's not a power user computer in either case you probably want to go for Surface Book 15 if you need a lot of power but this would way way less Island it blows, no bother have really been any MacBooks in a while that's a little bar on the keyboard that changes now it's got touch, it's a touch screen David doesn't have a little touch banking. [20:44] Okay that doesn't have a high price of the macbooks yeah i got a high price not the summer has size similar person it then they brought a surface pro sex again has the lack of usb c, so interesting name. Because if it wasn't the five going to call it the five because it was really confusing cuz they're originally when they first watch that people may not remember but before the Surface Pro 3 there were two others. Dress made of leather leather. [21:24] Leather Burns front of them shirt, help just like wouldn't when television first came out nobody called it black and white television, and actually when colors I look good in whittwood color television came out what happened was, they started calling at color television to differentiate it from normal television which wasn't color right then sometime into the evolution of color television that became the new normal nice are referring to black and white television where that was the famous picture for manual transmission yes. But, I bought a couple but anyway then we're using it here for our soundboard aren't we so high five as we can hear it still works great but then came the Surface Pro 2 Surface Pro 3 which is finally I hit Surface Pro 4 also hit and then they went back to school to Surface Pro, if a candidate that makes the right of the original one didn't exist but as you can here it does exist pass yet so i'm gonna call that when the five to tell me about the six, again they have increase the power. Exact same case so you know this nice little folding not the back that you know the same keyboard 7 change any of that but it's just it's just faster and black races green and black. [22:53] But not small, it really small vessel life if they just increase the the quality of bezel that the screen but i mean it was harassment plus whatever if you know you have a nice mac avid nice, surface for whatever even a surface 3 when they're fantastic screens the app so what they're better. But back to the USBC the reason I don't I just like it it's cuz it's everything is just be coming in that USBC and it's it's just it's not that you need it in your bag all the time, it's just that they they could have put it in there but I guess they wanted to wait until. [23:29] Thunder bolts and everything and have all the standards out and no fuss no muss smell, with very conservative play which is Xbox better than what they did when the original Surface Book came out and it didn't really work too well right well there's been rumors that the, the EU might Force Apple to standardize on USBC and get away from their lightning connector on their phones on their phones. Which better than a while ago from you I think yeah. Okay sure it's a lot more so like I find the USB that was granted there more cheap vendors making USB C cables but you can still squeeze it and bend it right you can't leave Den. Lightning press the the shield around the USB C connector alright so what's next, what's next hell we didn't talk so we talked about those headphones headphones so I don't know why they made the headphones but they look really nice. [24:40] My kids want them but you know what the world headphones right 350 Us gift card so, so I told you the story about my son and his little adventure to the, Texas parolee satisfy the gift cards and stuff like that so I might buy some I don't know if that's only set to headphones lying around, my house at three set the good headphones hear about three or four sets a good headphones at home on opening the set the can of there's another. [25:12] Tell me about use it towards surface Co Staples surface got okay let's move on to. HP the says that, a leather case on the outside live there let. Find currently that is the case i just like to retire don't know it's it's on the outside like elka terror what of the stove is okay inside and, of course it's done to the computer it's made it way more efficient well hopefully that works, they get to him that i was dry clean only cuz leather that's true that's so i don't think we'll wipe which one of you this is is some. Happier in this computer is like 18 hours of battery life is just huge the thing that makes sense is if you're going to carry around a folio of some sort with it in it. [26:15] That it would kind of be the same instead of you would just carry the system without a case Okay so David. So what to expect in from the Windows 10 October 2018 update or what we're affectionately calling 1809 the thing here is when we wrote that article, it was a what to expect and then said we were 12, but something's happened since then David it's there's a new feature in Windows 10 delete your files saved increases the space, leaving for spite building fossil currently it happens fairly small situation did you know you can re direct your desktop gas to one drive yes i do that. Oh well I don't and apparently those are the people that might have been. [27:12] I got in there yeah. Well it's really hard for Microsoft recorded all these different vendors of different products and make sure that things work, but wait no no one derives from Microsoft Windows from Microsoft Microsoft I thought it was from Apple, don't know okay and then they got these people called insiders they're supposed to test all these things but I think they're getting paid too much cuz obviously they're not doing a good job at tested this stuff, so there's a couple things that are bit frustrating when is that they released it, to the slow ring in the fast ring like a week before pushing it out to everybody else they really didn't leave it a lot of time and there have been allegations that they have deleted some post from The Insider Hub or people that said this is the problem. [28:04] Right. Not Microsoft has no no no no variety variety disappeared, were they perhaps running the Hub on 1809 at desktop redirected, under what they go yes that must be what have, they're probably running in on a nice day, but, but the, it is it's very important to make himself feel good because you were there to help make things better have some people been reporting this and, you have the possibility that would be nasty all i have a great way to make the sex feel better house invite everyone to be an mvp ch. It's kind of seems like they've invited thousands and thousands baby hundreds of thousands I didn't get invite you didn't get an invite so there is at least a level of expectation but it's like. Kathy put in a query that says not existing like it what sort of criteria did they put in for that so. I am running Insider build immediate they did not immediately respond to my request for information, well as other people blogged about it and think like they is people are one explain about it but it just seems to me if it be nice if they invite insiders but the should put some care into the inviting. And that really went nowhere so it's kind of a cool concept but. What will we see what that will really work I think we're looking for a whole new Computing Paradigm right now but I'm still not excited by the new phone Hardware out there, I want to get a new phone, I think I was not one out there that turns my crank. I mean really when you're looking for a phone that something that last a fair bit of time as is Handy. And then it is important and then everything else is just kind of like me at what point did the iphone and the and the. [34:17] The Galaxy start being awesome cameras that sticks on the iPhone, E46 with you know Microsoft Microsoft but everybody has unless you buy really cheap phone you have an amazing camera now you're going away or you could take it out the camera that you could just you could just take a phone when I get to get the S alignment take a GoPro, but you could not you can easily just a lot anyways so get fantastic diving so your phone's waterproof. No it's not it's a success on 7th and I can't take it down at the end. [34:56] But anyways that's like an OtterBox for it if I want to try but at some point so I'm going away from there if we can. Hi guys this is Chef Joshua I am from India and I guess I'm a special guest on the show this is episode 89 for those of you that have been keeping track we haven't had an episode since sometime in July so today is September 17th that were recording the show probably be coming out by two or three days but we've had lots going on while we've been away before we before we get, too much further into it we should probably do some housekeeping guys what about the word of the week, why do we let our special guests choose a word of the week. [1:15] Fuck fuck fuck shit, to watch we got it right so we got a little bit at, housekeeping to talk about that I've been doing some traveling David for doing some traveling we will talk more about that the end of the show but since you mentioned watch, I'm guessing you might not want to talk a little bit about some of the gadgets that were announced during the Apple event last week. So happen owns the venue iphones and apple watch okay the water yeah will will do his will get into what we go right into the news and let you take that as the first segment I will get with that so I'm going to do the news intro new story of the week alright so let's take that first news item the Apple iPhone event. [2:23] So Apple announce the iPhone, 10s Russians all the people in The Colony Texas is I collected everything from Apple, yeah and when you combine it with Max it becomes excess Max which is a terrible terrible, let's get on with it was terrible names for everyone else will fail so lucky. So one of the major announcements on the 7th was the Apple Watch series for which of the Greenlight removed from the site for the celebration which is an improvement, as far as looks so concerned but the thing is they introduce ECG and their watches. Which is electrocardiogram which made me actually consider switching 2 hours just to get the watch which I have never thought about before why do you want to ECG all the time. [3:27] Elektel on further thought I don't want to listen to all the time but let's see I was in my thirties or my forties and I was thinking about my health and. We want we want to ignore our health, I guess you can do that but I have heard a lot of people out of stories about the Apple watch cashing Hartley to diseases early on, for people who might have not had an idea about the diseases because otherwise perfectly healthy, so I think it's a great achievement for apple and for the health industry overall, why do they reset technologically yet it's hard to say but I can just imagine younger people going here mom your dad buy this watch, api of this is because it i'm worried about you now mom and dad you know maybe in their seventies or eighties will remember to charge it but you know yeah apple still sell a lot of them. Okay that was my first thought actually like. My mom and dad is still a little older it's probably that I probably buy them by this for them. [4:46] I don't think so but the price will no support calls. Right by the time you're old enough that it'll matter they'll have like a 30-day battery life or something like that, what this really means apple is going beyond the communications and gadgets are really getting into the health devices field. Yeah I guess they haven't getting into Health devices filled with the CDC when they really got into the groove for smart watches and left all the other SmartWatches in the dust too so to speak because, I don't see any other compelling Smartwatch other than Apple watch Android SmartWatches are fine but, that just spoke your phone notifications I guess you guys use any smart watches. I think it looks like a nice watch which the Apple doesn't it I have a fight ionic you're right it doesn't do much. [5:49] Notifications I don't think any of the watch-like does much, things and so I'm not people really don't use a Fitbit ionic has a near field communication pay system so like Apple pay, the one thing i like about it that no other smart watch really comes close is the battery life but also it water proof and but with that regularly. [6:18] Yeah so if I was going forward or probably go for a Fitbit or something similar but if you talk about fitbit's garments for people who are. Into the health seen before Apple watch camera. One is when i people that that are doing things they don't have a heart attack the other for people that are planning to have a heart attack you and fear of market segmentation. Okay so, well here's the thing if apples really getting to the health devices it's okay it's in a bigger way the one thing that we're seeing really changing Healthcare, from a technology perspective is Big Data machine learning and AI, in the build things like crisper in the human genome project and things like that take a lot of computing power and if you start Apple starts getting Telemetry from millions of people that are wearing this who knows what they might be able to discover problem is, they don't have cloud service they don't have the backend compute to really make good use of this so this leads me to believe their partner up, only relief for options for them to partner with as far as i'm concerned one would be amazon because cloud provider in the world. [7:38] I don't know what kind of relationship Apple has it Amazon but Amazon really is not a devices company more you know they've got the Kindle, they try to phone it didn't work they tried to go the Kindle HD Fire I've got one of them but it's really not a big deal just more just Amazon consumption device, it'll come back to Amazon if I should have left them for last let's talk about Google Google I don't think apple is going to partner with Google it but it had screwed Microsoft. So who's the fourth one at IBM Facebook Facebook Facebook. Google. Ok Google and apple are going to get together on devices cuz they compete too many front potentially Microsoft because of you take a look at where Microsoft and Apple play now not a lot of overlap anymore Microsoft out of the phone business. [8:36] The switch the devices will the surface devices where they Clash a bit, us soliders and the whole ecosystem right but interesting enough so what we haven't really talked too much about anything else that was at the apple event they didn't mention any max was gonna take, are we updated on their new laptops now next month or something where they announce a lot of laptops and will update the air parenting right so, Microsoft an option I think Amazon is probably the best option very little overlap and option for was building the wrong. Which I don't think they're going to do no, owner domestic considering how the phone service Works which doesn't sync their data. And you have to lick the tag the photos again in each of the devices. To ask you to send that heater back and forth and iCloud still doesn't work perfectly iMessage, and the cloud still doesn't work so I don't think building the one is, and Azure and they're probably running their own fabric between the two so that's that'll be interesting to see where Apple goes with that. [9:53] Let's talk about some of the other devices that the word ounce there were three new iPhones. Yes the iPhone tennis tennis Max and the 10 are start with which one do you want to own. Yeah I like super Retina display that they introduced with the tennis has a low DPI than 950 and 950xl from like 3 years back. [10:30] 2 It's fine but i don't really want one such a big device for today i think it was a five point eight and six point five in screens to let's go through the but that start the bottom man the iphone acts are, 64 gig starts at 7 or $49 us what's specs. [10:51] I don't know but don't just sit there look pretty that's my job. [10:57] Got that what what are the specs on that one I think it has a eatable bionic it has all of the. Bells and whistles of the expensive to iPhones but it doesn't have the camera, Lakers has only they tell you it doesn't have a telephoto camera it has it doesn't have 3D touch, and i think that's it actually and it doesn't have the ski lift you banding it has alley me telling you i'm. [11:29] Can you on the side yeah thats not really replacement for the current iphone ten it replacement for the iphone each plus, although they still sell that right and I think the bionic is supposed to be much more efficient and they've got low power cores as well so in theory get up to 50% more battery life. But I think like because event larger on the screen this time it's like only 90 minutes more than the H+ also that's a very good battery time like if you're getting 90 minutes more than, start at 999 for 64 gigs by the way if you want to go up to. 128 year $250 into 56 and 750, probably how you doing things that have the key I think they have the 64th and the 256th and the 512, okay so the excess so tell me between the XR in the excess. [12:37] Only if i had to choose one i'd probably choose the ten are because the you ten s has excessive based on that okay but what do you get for those extra. You get a telephoto camera by the way that NR can do the book and the portrait effects without the telephoto camera so that's important fact that you're looking to just do the telephoto, just getting the tennis portrait mode with software, wanted display rather than and see okay. Slique cannabis, real videos and pictures. Look for to $50 you're not really getting much okay. Go ahead Tennessee on $400 more than the excess, and you're just getting slightly bigger battery and a slightly bigger screen that's it I will say this is hard to say, it is Edison 1500 us-45 12 gig not that anybody would buy a 512k phone but, really why music recordings all sorts of things always running out of space. [14:06] I believe I have 512 phone as well if it was available for models that I want. Yeah that's interesting I don't use that much storage on my phone then there's a thing called streaming guys you should try it, yeah but doesn't have good Netflix owns all over the place and, I like to have lots of pull apart Castle to Ally cat usually have 3 to 4 gigs of work podcast on my phone downloaded all the time welcome that argue against that through quickly like I like my music with me up at the lake and stream that. Things like that okay so that's. Anything else want to talk about the Apple event anything that was interesting anything was conspicuously absent anything else. [15:08] On my rca or everyone's the cool food for a mac even later this month or let's say next month because they have the lip and he of bead yeah that will prob be the best selling mac again, and the announcement Havasu Mohave think is coming out to Max, next week or probably this weekend I was 12th that's a major update for iOS which will make old phones and fast that's a good thing for everyone who owns an iPhone so, let's move on. David Microsoft officially has a name for the next version of Windows 10 creatively called the October 2018. Wow when can we expect to get that November but I love that got rid of the fall and Autumn and stuff it's like. [16:02] As for arbitrary based on where seattle is so. Let's build the arm shifter talking about creating shapes that have the same performances and i7 but with much much better battery life, now what i'm expecting david is that you turn off was background sounds as if it's sleep if it's ad that's fault not mine it and then i also expect. [17:27] The next generation is really weird to see if we die we tried we are in Redmond we tried some of the early Windows alarm devices that were they were but they were sluggish they. Buy it and they were they will cases to be righteous and new entered so you take a lap top make it slower and, but I think I think it's going to be pretty interesting so we talked about the Apple event there's a Microsoft Event October 2nd, i have not but if it if it's a new and i would make when you're all talk more about that my rant and rave we wanted me york for that we get an invite. Well right unless you pay for it so basically this means that enterprises will be able to run older versions of Windows 10 longer. Like. [20:24] Like they do with open to where they have what are they call them. So I've been working a lot of organizations moving to Windows 10 and they're really really struggling that's the case maybe they shouldn't be maybe they should understand it's just a minor update makes you just let it run but think they can. So We're there struggling with it this will be good news for them and 30 months okay so that means if you want to update every other year. [20:59] You could do that you could do that we should talk a little bit about it's just that Microsoft is going to be charging for Windows 7. Excited by the way they were charging for supporting XP through the pay for it so for those who aren't aware Windows 7 is coming to end of, January 20th that was what it was supposed to be and now they got his five years of paid support I believe which. Total expected sure you can if you want to pay for it they'll take care of you and I think a lot of people just don't care. And they just let it run without Sportability. I don't want to think about that too much last last piece of news that your phone app in Windows 10. Now has a Android SMS support so from your laptop you can send text messages so I've been able to do this with MightyText for like, 5 years right okay and then there's Android messaging app does it that's right but this is a joke. [22:06] Centralized hub for all of your messages so you can have it come into your Skype stream or whatever really. Ion yeah i use the browser based one with with android and it seems to work well and then it works for my non windows devices like. [22:23] My Android tablet okay so I'm not 7% but obviously you were you put it in the show that's all right. For my birthday I went to New York City they were taking my family there I think I've been there but haven't gone to the kids before we spend a few days there oddly enough I ran into some people that I know from Ottawa there right there take down the street so we have some fun you know who you are, what do Yankees gave my birthday try to Nathan's Hot Dog have White Sox. [23:24] Edgewood New York City you did a lot like to talk a lot about the city later but, did go to the Microsoft store in Prairie surface ago there was very noisy busy Place great location, and guess what it's more laughable than a both the surface. [23:47] And the whole body surface for what do you mean by regular some people might not know what that means well but then Mary Jo Foley stole it from us, it means how well it works on your lap at Lop ability is a personal thing because everyone has different left Dimensions based on how big their legs are and how, yo holla at all they are because you get a different angle on your lap based on how tall I was all the distance between the floor and your knees could have packed it totally totally, and I had lap ability issues with the Surface Book would slide off my lap or topple over my lap is slope. [24:29] I had liability issues with the Surface Pro 3 and 4, just because I didn't have enough Lop real estate to get the angle that I need to see if I can make it work but it's not Ideal Baptist for the lift my knees a little bit. David you're taller you didn't have the issues I had, surface go worked really it worked well then that's made for a smaller person cuz I found it was fine I didn't really concert that Billy but I found the keys very small, keyboard was actually better than I thought he would have took her and I skateboard but I still able to type on it so friend of the show fellow MVP Rafael from what the MVP coffee klatch in Germany, tweeted at us asking what which laptop you should take I think the surface go is the perfect device to take to ignite I don't think that was one of his choices though too bad you should go buy one that's right. [26:31] He was kicked out of the store for being there without his parents swim team you were just next door you know I wasn't feeling well, yeah so he can't believe I walked over and they said yep no we don't want to babysit your kids all afternoon to the store by himself just yesterday and you won't let him the store yet that's our policy if he walked down the hall and went to the Apple Store instead they have, no issues welcome so I tweeted and the Microsoft store caught back to me, and the manager apologized and he sending him the mouse that he was looking at those a Razer gaming mouse not slow but feels very odd, they didn't want customers in the store yes that he wasn't doing anything, I can see just looking at stuff yeah that's supposed to same thing it was doing the day before at the store New York City. That's funny that's my rant, i too have anything else rats race you have any what about what about heard any rumors for microsoft, well you've heard rumors about the October 2nd event right right and no new device type so I really doubt they'll do an arm thing. I really wish they would do a surface laptop in arm but I don't think they will they will. What does the world stand to lose without equal access to technology and the internet? Microsoft’s Dona Sarkar and Leonardo Ortiz discuss the Microsoft Airband Initiative and why the future of jobs and education make closing the digital divide more important than ever. Then, Windows Insider MVP Andre DaCosta from Jamaica, shares his thoughts on the power of connectivity, plus a few tips for optimizing Windows while having limited access to the internet.   Episode transcript JASON HOWARD:  Welcome to the Windows Insider Podcast.  You're listening to Episode 12.  I'm your host, Jason Howard.  Today, we're exploring the digital divide and access to the Internet, what does the world stand to lose if some people have access to technology and the Internet and other people don't; what can be done about the digital divide; and why should all tech companies care.  Those questions and more coming up in this episode. First up, Dona Sarkar, head of the Windows Insider Program, chats with Leonardo Ortiz of Microsoft Philanthropies about how the digital divide profoundly affects communities, education, and employment. Here are Leonardo and Dona. LEONARDO ORTIZ:  My name is Leonardo Ortiz.  I've been in Microsoft for 18 years now, and I currently work for the Microsoft Philanthropies group where I oversee our global execution. DONA SARKAR:  Which is, you know, kind of amazing LEONARDO ORTIZ:  It's definitely fun, you know, and it has to do with figuring out how we land our programs all over the world. DONA SARKAR:  That's right.  So as a society we're in the middle of an exciting technological transformation, but there's billions of people around the world, and millions right here in the U.S. who don't have access to tech and the Internet.  Why is this issue of digital divide so critical, and why is Microsoft Philanthropies so committed to solving it. LEONARDO ORTIZ:  As you say, you know, the world is changing at a very rapid pace. Everything is becoming more digital, which means the way in which we work, the way in which we learn, the interaction with government, with commerce. And as the world becomes more digital, when you have more than half of the population in the world with no access to technology or connectivity, which on itself shouldn't matter that much but for the fact that that connectivity allows you to access opportunities, content, knowledge, services, then these people are lagging behind even in a more rapid pace. They are underserved already, and the gap gets just widening in a more dramatic way. And they're not being able to advance and access technology by market means, which means that companies like Microsoft, we really need to step up and do some extra work in addition to what we normally do in our business model to ensure that technology advances but that we left no one behind, to the extent possible. DONA SARKAR:  You said over 50 percent of the world has no connectivity. LEONARDO ORTIZ:  Exactly. DONA SARKAR:  That's enormous. LEONARDO ORTIZ:  Not even a feature phone, nothing. DONA SARKAR:  Nothing. LEONARDO ORTIZ:  Nothing. DONA SARKAR:  So more than 50 percent of the world is never connected. LEONARDO ORTIZ:  Exactly. DONA SARKAR:  That's pretty extraordinary.  And I know you guys have been doing a lot of work over the past few years to ensure that people in communities have access to the opportunities that tech provides.  Can you tell us a little bit about what you've been doing. LEONARDO ORTIZ:  Yes.  So our main goal is to bridge that digital divide, to ensure that people have access to technology, but most important to ensure that people is ready for the future.  In a world in which we're going to see more artificial intelligence, more robotics, the way of working is going to evolve rapidly. We need to make sure, and I'm going to start with young people, that all the future generations that will come to the workforce are future ready, that they're learning not only how to use technology but how to create technology, which is now going to become not just something that is useful for the software industry, but for everyone, regardless of the discipline that people pursue.  So that's going to more generalized in the future, and we need to make sure that that happens. Right now, we're seeing displacement starting to happen, job displacement, people whose jobs are going away because of automation, and especially in areas like the manufacturing industry or retail industry. And we need to work with society, with academia, with nonprofit sector to ensure that we're identifying those people, that we're reskilling those individuals, and that we're matching them to the existing jobs that are out there, because people may just think jobs are going away, but you know what, every time that technology evolves and that industry evolves, jobs go away but other new jobs come up. DONA SARKAR:  That's right. LEONARDO ORTIZ:  But we just need to make sure that people are trained rapidly enough to be able to plug into the existing jobs. So we're working on those two fronts, and a third area of work is ensuring that the nonprofit sector, which is one that doesn't have a lot of budget and that solely focuses on addressing some of the most difficult societal issues in the world, that they are also adopting technology so that they themselves become more effective, more productive, and do more good around the globe. DONA SARKAR:  The best way to empower them is by being able to scale with tech. LEONARDO ORTIZ:  Exactly. DONA SARKAR:  I love that. What you just said about jobs go away but new jobs emerge, and we have to really take the responsibility to train the next generation to be able to do those jobs, it reminds me a lot of that article that Brad Smith recently wrote about the retirement of the horse - LEONARDO ORTIZ:  Oh yes. DONA SARKAR:  -- with the introduction of the car, and all of the new jobs that came along with the introduction of the car, different jobs, completely different. LEONARDO ORTIZ:  That's a great example.  A great stat from that story is that in the year 1900, New York City used to have 100,000 horses.  DONA SARKAR:  Wow.  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  That was what made possible everything in New York, right, people moving from one place to another, products being moved.  And then 20 years later, those horses were gone.  Imagine the amount of people that were driving the coaches or the veterinarians or people feeding the horses or cleaning after the horses.  Those jobs went away, but now you needed chauffeurs for cars and drivers, mechanics, and a breadth of other roles that existed.  Now, can the person that was cleaning the barn after the horse, was that individual skilled to now go and repair a car?  No.  DONA SARKAR:  No.  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  But something needed to happen.  And that happens in any industrial revolution, and that happened all over the world.  The countries that have the ability or the societies that have the ability to learn faster and adapt faster are the ones who emerge to the top.  DONA SARKAR:  So true, and history has dictated that this will happen over and over again.  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  It's happening, yeah.  DONA SARKAR:  It's happening.  So speaking of happening, can you share a success story that represents what people or communities can achieve once they have access to technology?  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  We see a lot of different stories, all inspiring.  Especially, when I talk to people, to journalists and other people around the globe, and we talk about all these 52 percent of population in the world that has no access to technology, some of those communities don't even have running water or electricity.  They barely have food.  They have no education.  So people ask us, why would they care about having technology when they're not even covering these needs, right, their essential needs.  And the answer is that technology helps leapfrog certain stages of development.  And technology helps accelerate the ability for communities to access things, content, different services, that will allow people to improve their quality of life.  A great example of this is these three kids from Uganda, Aaron, Joshua, and Josiah.  A couple of years ago, they participated in a competition that we have in Microsoft called Imagine Cup, you probably have heard of it, which is inspiring kids in high schools and colleges to learn how to develop software.  And then by doing that, they enter this competition in which they create solutions for problems that they see in their communities, whether it is related to health or education or the environment or something else.  These kids are from Uganda, and they realized that the rate of mortality of mothers and newborns was very high in rural areas, these places that had no running water, on electricity, nor clinics.  And the mortality rate was high because there wasn't enough health, not even physicians but nurses or other people, practitioners or facilities to even monitor the pregnancy.  And where you had community clinics of some sort, they didn't have the equipment, like no way to do an ultrasound, right?  So with a mobile device, a mobile phone, and coding, they invented a very low-cost device, and software, to actually replace the sonogram or the ultrasound machine at a super-low cost.  Basically, it's the cost of the device, just the phone.   And they started deploying it in rural Uganda.  And they tried it, they created this thing no one had ever created something like it, definitely not the industry, because it's a very cheap solution.  And in the communities in which they piloted, the mortality rate started going down very quickly.   They have now been in contact with local governments from a couple of African countries, or national governments from African countries that are now interested in expanding the use of this solution to be able to provide a better quality of health to expecting mothers in rural Africa.  That's a story I love.  DONA SARKAR:  I love that story.  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  And like that we see a lot of other examples of great things being done.  DONA SARKAR:  I love that.  That's such impact, because it affects not just the mothers but their entire family, it affects huge communities.  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  Oh, it's a multiplying effect.  DONA SARKAR:  Yeah.  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  Yeah, that's why organizations say that if you work with women, the multiplying effect in society is huge, because in many cases, especially in developing countries, women are heads of family.  So you impact the whole family immediately.  DONA SARKAR:  I think that's fascinating.  What you said about leapfrogging is really powerful, because we have a Windows Insider named Caleb teaching Code.org tutorials.  He used the Minecraft ones that your team produced to teach basic tech education to these kids outside Nairobi, in Kenya.  And these are kids who have never seen a computer, who have never been in a connected area.  So he goes to town with a car, some PCs, Code.org tutorials, sets up this hub, and actually gets them hands-on time with these tutorials.  And what's fascinating is that the kids take to it immediately, they learn it right away.  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  They do.  DONA SARKAR:  And parents will often come and say, "What are you wasting your time with, this has no place in our life, we need you to be helping on the farm," you know, this kind of thing.  So Caleb told us a story that his best student is a ten-year old named Bernice. And one day, Bernice's mom comes to school and says, "Why is she wasting her time with this?  This has no room on our farm.  We need her to work on the farm."  And Caleb said, "She is learning things that will enable her to bypass farming forever."  And to Eunice that's like a shocking stat, right, she doesn't know that that means.  So what Caleb did was he pulled in the parents and the teachers into learning to code so they also have the opportunity to leapfrog their lives, and they're able to actually help their kids with technology, because when kids have questions, you go to the adult in your life.  And Caleb knows he's not going to be around in their village forever, so he's systematically changing people's lives, not just kids, but the adults who love them, who care about them.  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  This is a great example, and it speaks to what we're really getting when learning how to code, which is it's not the coding, it's you're learning critical thinking, problem-solving.  DONA SARKAR:  That's right.  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  And in the long term we in Microsoft and many other players in the industry and in academia are convinced that computer science education is fundamental and should be compulsory in the same way in which we all learn biology and chemistry and physics.  Not because we will become part of the health industry or go and work for a chemical company, but because, for example, for you to know how your body works you needed to learn fundamentals of biology.  In an increasingly digital world, if we want to understand how things work in society, we need to learn computer science.  DONA SARKAR:  Oh, absolutely.  I think everyone has to learn computer science.  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  Even if you're not going to become an engineer.  So that's --  DONA SARKAR:  Essentially if.  And I tell everyone it's like reading and writing.  Just because you can read and write doesn't make you an author.  You don't need to become an author necessarily.  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  Exactly.  DONA SARKAR:  But it's fundamental to learn.  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  Exactly.  DONA SARKAR:  So in order for people to actually learn computer science, we need connectivity.  And like you're saying, over 50 percent of the world's population isn't online.  And in the U.S. 23 million people in the rural parts of the U.S. don't have access to high-speed Internet or broadband.  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  You know what's crazy about that?  Even in some of these communities we have data centers, and other companies have data centers.  Can you imagine you go outside of a data center there's no connectivity for the community, the neighboring families?  DONA SARKAR:  That's crazy.  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  So that's a big problem.  It's a global problem, of course.  We have been as Microsoft engaged in trying to address this problem for a few years now.  We have around 18 different projects around the globe.  We're currently heavily investing in India, which is a vast country, also with a huge gap in connectivity.  But you would imagine that people would say developed countries don't have this problem.  DONA SARKAR:  Oh my.  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  But you then go and look at the stats, and, you know, 24 million people in the United States --  DONA SARKAR:  That's not a small number.  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  -- that live in rural areas don't have access.  Actually, the number is greater when you add the people in urban areas.  It actually goes up 32 million people in the United States, 23 of which are in rural areas, which is where the problem is more pronounced.  And that's an issue.  Why?  Think about the education model in the United States, for example, right now, requires students of all grades to access resources and do homework online.   DONA SARKAR:  That's right.  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  That's generalized.  It's like all districts have components that are online.  More and more and more as a parent you need to engage online.  The kids come home, and they need to do homework online, and they check for answers of their math homework online to see, okay, did I solve this problem right, and then online you have the whole construction of how you did it.   If you don't have access, if you're an 11-year-old or a 12-year-old in middle school, you had no way of knowing if you did your math homework right or wrong.  Or sometimes to even go and do what is required online.  And if you don't do that, that means that you start falling behind.  DONA SARKAR:  Immediately.  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  And that's exponential.  And for purpose of the example let's just put it in time.  If you fall a month behind from everyone else, the next year you're two months or three months behind.  It's exponential.  The more you fall behind because everyone is advancing rapidly, the gap starts widening very quickly.  That's one example of why connectivity is very important.  DONA SARKAR:  That is a frightening realization.  I had not thought about that in that way.  I'd thought about it in terms of this will just keep these people from knowing about opportunities that exist in the world.  But if it starts all the way in elementary school, they don't even get there.  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  It impacts education.  People think, okay, if you don't have connectivity, then too bad, you need to go to the store instead of shopping online, or you won't access Facebook.  No, it's not about that.  DONA SARKAR:  No, it's just about basic education.  It's online.  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  It's about basic education.  And when you think about that, then that impacts everything else in society.  DONA SARKAR:  Yeah.  My gosh, I hadn't realized, because, you know, when you and I went to school, looking stuff up online was not a mandatory part of our life.  But now it is.  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  Now it is.  And you could say, well, those kids then need to go to the library, but that could be a partial solution, but it is not enough because now everything is online.  DONA SARKAR:  And they are going to have to assume certain things:  library is there, it's open, library has connectivity, they have enough computers for everybody.   LEONARDO ORTIZ:  There are stories that we've heard of kids that live in zip codes in which there's no connectivity and are required to do certain homework online, and kids driving somewhere to the neighboring town and standing outside of a café or a store or somewhere that has Wi-Fi in a parking lot trying to do the homework.  DONA SARKAR:  Wow.  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  So when you think about that, it's like this, we really need to solve this.  DONA SARKAR:  We have to solve this.  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  Exactly.  DONA SARKAR:  This is a global problem, but definitely a local one, as well.  So what have you found are the main challenges that stand in the way of closing this connectivity gap?  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  There are different components to it.  There is a regulatory component to it, and there is a technology component to it.  The technology piece, it's kind of solved in the sense that there's existing technology that can help address this at a lower cost than the normal broadband by fiber optic.  The problem is infrastructure.  So these places don't have connectivity because there's no fiber optic network to go and do that, because there's not enough market, why all the investment.  In the United States we clearly have an initiative called Microsoft Airband Initiative is that trying to address this.  Microsoft has been investing in developing, along with some partners, technology that allows us to use the unused TV radio spectrum.  DONA SARKAR:  That's right.  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  They call it TV whitespaces.  DONA SARKAR:  Yes.  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  So it's when you think about the UHF channels, for example, I'm old enough to remember changing the TV not with a remote control but just using those channels.  Radio and TV, by the way, use that radio spectrum.  In places like LA or New York the radio spectrum is full because there's a lot of --  DONA SARKAR:  A lot.  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  -- TV stations and a lot of radio stations.  But as you start going to more remote places, you hardly have usage of the radio spectrum.  All that unused space is space through which you can transmit data, as well if you have the right technology.  So MSR in Microsoft, along with other engineers, have created technology that allows you to access that, to put some antennas and be able to transmit some Wi-Fi signals in the radio spectrum.  Now, the way to scale this is not just to go and put a standalone antenna here or there, but to partner with commercial partners that are interested in having a low-cost solution for selling connectivity services to the population.  DONA SARKAR:  Ah, I see.  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  But you asked me about the main challenge, and I'll get to the partnerships and how we do this, but the main challenge right now is more political.  It's about getting the regulatory approval, because it has to do with permits to be able to deploy those solutions in different locations.  DONA SARKAR:  So the technical problem is not the biggest challenge that we face.  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  No, the biggest challenge is getting the approvals.  That's why when we launched our initiative a few months ago, Brad Smith, who's our president, presented this plan in Washington, DC in front of a lot of representatives and people from the DC community, calling for clearing these regulatory hurdles so that we in an easier way deploy this technology across the country.  That's one part of how you solve this, and then once that is cleared --  DONA SARKAR:  That's right.  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  -- then you work on the business side of the house, which is, you know, we need to partner.  We don't want to become a broadband company.  DONA SARKAR:  No, not at all.  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  That's not -- that's not our goal.  DONA SARKAR:  We have no intention.  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  We're interested in the technology to solve the problem.  That's why we're partnering with local providers in order to figure out how to create a model that is cost effective for the population, and that doesn't require the millions of dollars of investment in fiber optic.  DONA SARKAR:  So it benefits the Internet Service Provider at a lower cost without them having to invest upfront so much that they say no.  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  Exactly, because if the density of the population is low, then the ROI for investing in fiber optic in certain places, it's not there.  DONA SARKAR:  It's not there.  So funny TV whitespaces story for you, outside Nairobi there's a region called Nanyuki.  Satya had gone there for Win 10 launched.  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  That's where he launched Windows 10, exactly.  DONA SARKAR:  Yes.  And he actually met a Windows Insider named Chris Baraka, and Chris actually works for a company that does TV whitespaces in Nanyuki.  He's one of our Windows Insiders we work with quite regularly.  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  Oh, that's amazing.  And that's one of the first projects that we ever did in the world, and a lot of learning has come from that, and we are trying to replicate that in many places.  And that's what we're trying to do in the United States.  DONA SARKAR:  I think that's amazing.   So what does Philanthropies all up hope to accomplish in the next year, and eventually long term?  What would you consider to be success?  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  There's a couple of things that I will call out.  We're trying to train students or even young kids that may not be in school and teachers, teachers to be able to teach computer science education, and students to learn it.  We've already in the past few years trained more than 300 million kids.  DONA SARKAR:  Three hundred million? LEONARDO ORTIZ:  Yes.  DONA SARKAR:  Wow.  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  Three hundred million.  And this is a count that we started like five and a half years ago.  DONA SARKAR:  Yeah, but 300 million, that's very impressive, that's amazing.  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  Yeah, yeah.  Teachers we're in the thousands still.  It's a harder challenge.  And we started more recently to focus more and more and more on teachers.  We just want to keep working on those numbers, but most importantly ensuring that different countries adopt computer science education as compulsory in their education system, because we will never scale unless the formal education system integrates computer science education in their curriculum.  DONA SARKAR:  Absolutely.  There's many countries who made it mandatory, like I think England was one of them.  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  Well, and England is in the right path, Korea, Russia, and a few others, but the majority of the countries aren't.  DONA SARKAR:  Absolutely they are not.  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  Including the United States.  In the U.S. there are still 18 states that have not adopted computer science education as a subject that can earn you credits for high school graduation.  DONA SARKAR:  That's insane.  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  Forget about K-12, right now --  DONA SARKAR:  Eighteen?  LEONARDO ORTIZ:  Yeah, 18 that still need to pass legislation.  And we have a team working on that, and we're moving fast to do it, but there's a lot of work there.  That's one part of what we want to accomplish.  On the other end, and I mentioned that earlier, that working with nonprofits for us, enabling them with technology is a multiplying factor to help address some of the most pressing challenges around the globe.  So accelerating technology adoption, especially cloud technology, for nonprofits is also something that we want to do.  Right now, we donate technology, over a billion dollars' worth of technology to more than 100,000 nonprofits around the globe.  We actually want to in the next couple of years multiply that to reach 300,000 nonprofits.   Two years ago, in the World Economic Forum in Davos our CEO, Satya Nadella, said that we were committing to donate a billion dollars' worth of cloud services to the nonprofit sector over the next three years.  And we have very rapidly seen progress there.  But it's not about the investment, it's about how many nonprofits actually get on technology, ours hopefully, but any technology, to be able to do their work in a better way.  And that's what we want to do, that's our goal.  DONA SARKAR:  I love that.   Thank you so much for being here.  This has been such a pleasure, obviously something we're deeply passionate about.  And, you know, we have millions of Windows Insiders, every country in the Jamaica.  You might notice a few glitches in the audio, and that's due to the very problem we're talking about today, limited Internet connectivity.  Hi, Andre.  Welcome to the show.  What are you working on these days?  ANDRE DACOSTA:  Hi.  It is great to be here.   This is Andre DaCosta from Jamaica.  I currently write for groovypost.com where I write a combination of how-to articles, tips and tricks, and how to get the most out of Windows 10 and Office 365.  As you mentioned, I am the one and only Windows Insider MVP in Jamaica right now, and I hope to change that.  I actually participate every day on the Microsoft communities where I offer my help and expertise in using Windows 10, and it was recognized many years ago when I was helping out with Windows 7, and I was nominated to become an MVP.  JASON HOWARD:  Awesome.  So our listeners can find you on Microsoft community and at groovypost.com.  Well, tell us a bit about where you live in Jamaica.  What do you see when you look out your window?  ANDRE DACOSTA:  Well, I currently live in the central part of Jamaica, which is the Parish of Manchester.  That's about 60 miles away from the capitol, Kingston.  It's mostly a rural area.  There are a lot of farms around.  So I wake up to seeing like goats and chickens and cows and stuff like that around me.  And lots of nature.  It's a really nice place to live if you really want quietness.  JASON HOWARD:  I was going to say, it sounds like a beautiful place to be.  ANDRE DACOSTA:  Yeah, it is.  I am not too far from the beach actually.  JASON HOWARD:  A little sun and sand anytime you want it.  What about the Internet connectivity in your community?  ANDRE DACOSTA:  It's not great.  Currently, I use a metered connection.  I had to travel to my brother's home today to set up this event.  Every two days, I pay like about $2 U.S. to get about 300 megabytes of data, which I use to do my work.  And that's really that's how I've been working for a long time now.  It's a struggle, but I do work with it, and make the best of it.  JASON HOWARD:  So it sounds like in an area that has either low Internet connectivity or in your case highly metered connections, it sounds like you need to use some specific strategies in adapting to that type of environment.  Can you tell us a little bit about that?  ANDRE DACOSTA:  Definitely.  You really have to be planning ahead.  Time management is an asset.  You really have to know how to use your time wisely.  But I try not to make it frustrate me or anything.  I'm still doing what I love.  I enjoy doing this.  JASON HOWARD:  Within the Windows OS itself is there anything particularly helpful about Windows, any settings or things that you can change that help make this process any better?  ANDRE DACOSTA:  Well, for me personally one of the big issues I had initially with Windows 10 was it's a service.  It really delivers a lot of its functionality through the Internet.  So using a lot of features in Windows 10 required that I had a good Internet connection.  But at the same time, Windows 10 allowed me to manage how I access the Internet.  So features like the Metered Connection settings in Windows 10 allowed me to really manage which programs and services were able to access the Internet.   And it's interesting, because a lot of persons, especially in North America, had similar issues.  And I was able to write an article, and it turns out to be one of the most popular articles I have on groovypost.com, how to manage your Internet usage in Windows 10.  So I'm able to help persons still use Windows 10 and use all the offline features that it has to offer.   And there are many programs that you can still use offline, and it doesn't necessarily have to be like this operating system is going to use up all my data, what am I going to do.  You can use features in Windows 10 to manage your bandwidth, and at the same time take advantage of all the new features it has to offer.  JASON HOWARD:  So you did mention in settings being able to go through and set metered connection settings, and that it helps control how much bandwidth is being used.   ANDRE DACOSTA:  Yeah.  JASON HOWARD:  Are there any application level settings or other things anywhere inside the OS that you've found through this trial and error process that you were able to provide tips and tricks on to other users? ANDRE DACOSTA:  Again, going back to the metered connection settings, but also in Windows Update there are ways to control how Windows Update downloads updates.  So I can also adjust whether I want to share my bandwidth with other computers I have on my personal network at home, and I can also turn on certain background applications from accessing the Internet in the privacy settings.  So those are features that are available for users to explore and try and see what works for them.  You don't have to wholesale turn off everything.  JASON HOWARD:  So having said that, how would having a better Internet connection make a difference for you?  ANDRE DACOSTA:  I try not to look at it just from my perspective alone.  I think personally for the wider community where I live I think having better Internet connection would lead to a better community.   One aspect I think that would really help is in education where a lot of young people leaving high school, you know, college is not affordable, it's very expensive, and I think for a lot of young people leaving high school the first thing they think about is getting a job to support that dream of eventually going to college.  I think that's one of the areas where the Internet can definitely help when it comes to higher learning.  It equalizes the playing field for many.  I think one of the great opportunities of having a faster, more consistent and reliable Internet access would be to provide students leaving high school the opportunity to continue their education.  For a lot of students leaving high school, especially in my community, it's difficult to think about going to college right away, and many have to think about getting their first jobs.  And what that does, it tends to limit the opportunity to go to school, because once you start going into the work world, it minimizes that feeling of going on to higher education.  So I think for a lot of young persons, having access to fast Internet would give them the opportunity to continue learning using social media, using sites like YouTube to continue learn, and continue to pursue their dreams.  JASON HOWARD:  Do you see any economic benefits or opportunities that better Internet could bring to your community?  ANDRE DACOSTA:  The shared economy is an opportunity.  Platforms like Airbnb, they're coming online here in Jamaica.   Another opportunity also is even for farmers.  You know, they will be able to sell their products and advertise it to new markets.  The Internet is really the basis for the economy going in the future.  And you can't have people just thinking about leaving their rural towns and causing this exodus to go to another town where there might be better Internet.  You need to build up your local communities.  And I've made a conscious effort to stay where I live and contribute to my local economy.  And it's through the work I do as a Windows Insider I'm able to do that.  JASON HOWARD:  You've done an amazing job of describing both the challenges of limited connectivity and the potential for positive change if the gap were to be bridged.  Do you see any other ways that better access to the Internet could make a positive impact?  ANDRE DACOSTA:  You know, Jamaica has recently been going through a lot of issues in terms of the crime and violence.  And I think it goes back again to the youth not having opportunities for them to really do things to make a change in their society.  And I think if the Internet was available in a way where they could use it as a platform to build solutions that the society really needs, even if it's someone maybe starting their own Internet café in the community.  JASON HOWARD:  Yeah, it would definitely change the landscape that you're currently operating in.  ANDRE DACOSTA:  Yeah.  JASON HOWARD:  Are there any parting words of wisdoms you'd like to share with the rest of the Windows Insider community?  ANDRE DACOSTA:  Sure.  The Windows Insider program is great.  You know, if someone told me three years ago that Microsoft would release a new version of Windows two times per year, and giving the opportunity to try new releases of it every week, you know, I would say you're crazy, but it's actually happening.   And the opportunities to really contribute to the product and to see the features actually be realized is one of the great things about the Windows Insider program.  I'm actually seeing features suggested become actual technology, the end products I use every day.
