This week's episode was recorded in front of a live audience on Feb. 7th, 2025, at Cinema 21 in Portland, Oregon. Beloved composer, musician, and iconic actor PAUL WILLIAMS joined us to discuss the film we screened that night, PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE, as well as his impressive and long career in film and music. Paul talks about his experiences working with director Brian De Palma, juggling acting and composing songs for fellow actors William Finley, Gerrit Graham, and Jessica Harper, his stylistic influences for writing the soundtrack, the joy in playing a bastard like Swan and even how Phantom eventually found an audience with the help of some dedicated Winnipeggers. He also shares fascinating stories about his prolific work output, including composing for Jim Henson, how Burt Reynolds got the idea to put him in Smokey & The Bandit, writing songs for the Carpenters, Barbara Streisand & Ishtar, meeting songwriting deadlines while touring with Liza Minelli, how it felt when Phantom superfans Daft Punk reached out to him to collaborate on their music, and so much more. And as if that wasn't enough, there's also a live performance from Paul's latest collaborators, PORTUGAL. THE MAN, which includes a lovely Phantom Of The Paradise tip of the hat. Thanks again to all who donated their time and energy to make this beautiful event happen! Enjoy!PAUL WILLIAMS:https://www.paulwilliamsofficial.com/PORTUGAL. Kenny from Film & Special Events Kenny Boyce is the manager of Film & Special Events. It's hard to say if he was first drawn to show business when his uncle won a colour TV and gave it to his family. Or if it was watching movies at the Highland Theatre on Main. Or sitting outside the Winnipeg Stadium listening to concerts. Whether it's a film shooting in the Exchange District, a sporting event, festival, or parade rolling down Portage Avenue, Kenny and his team are part of them all. Originally an office of one, he started with the City in the 90s working out of Mayor Thompson's private dining room. Kenny fills in the blanks on his unique career path and recalls the day he met Queen Elizabeth II as one of his best days on the job. You may wonder how many actors, hip hop artists, and rock stars have 'Kenny B' in their phones. Spoiler alert: He's not going to tell us. Kenny honours those relationships. He credits that discretion (and keeping a clean inbox) with getting him where he is today. He's a proud Winnipegger and here to stay. This podcast is recorded in Treaty One Territory, the home and traditional lands of the Anishinaabe, Ininew, and Dakota peoples, and in the National Homeland of the Red River Métis. We acknowledge that our drinking water comes from Shoal Lake 40 First Nation, in Treaty Three Territory.   What programs and services impact you the most? Email us at city-podcast@winnipeg.ca with suggestions for future episodes. Taxpayers are ornery after the City of Winnipeg proposed a 5.9% increase to their property taxes. Finance Chair Jeff Browaty joins us in Episode 37 to pitch service improvements that he and Mayor Scott Gillingham say their budget will deliver. 7.15 Part 2- Coun. Jeff Browaty says that while in theory the law requires the city to have a balanced budget, escalating costs like overtime for firefighters and transit operators have wiped out the rainy day fund. While his budget proposes $41M in savings across departments, "if we don't have enough revenue, we're going to have to start closing down the amenities people appreciate." Browaty addresses raising transit fares, new payment options, and 311 wait time improvements, but admits, "it's ridiculous that there's certain things that are failing residents and it's unacceptable." 14.00- Browaty confirms the poll Gillingham cited as proof there's support for the budget only surveyed 400 people, in a city of over 800,000. With affordability an issue, raising taxes was "the last thing we wanted to do" but other levels of government benefit from inflation while "fire trucks are being purchased in US dollars." 17.40- Marty asks why city councillors aren't tightening their belts with wage or ward allowance rollbacks. Browaty airs some criticism of the spending of other council members. To Donate via E-transfer, Cash and Cheque contributions, Ads & Sponsoring segments, please Email - Martygoldlive@gmail.com 20.05 Part 3- Former Mayoral candidate Don Woodstock sent an email to council members on December 9 about the City needing a DOGE approach to reduce the cost of civic governance. Listen to Browaty explain a new process that will "drill down into the nitty gritty" on "big cost departments", to find more government efficiencies, such as lowering fleet costs. 23.15- "Nothing's off the table" for consideration, including Woodstock's proposal for the city resuming operation of an aggregate recycling program. Browaty is asked about Don's other proposals, like pulling performance bonds on errant contractors- "we should probably better stay on top of it." 25.00- The North Kildonan councillor had asked to appear on TGCTS in October (a top 20 episode) to warn Winnipeggers that water and other costs and fees were spiraling out of control - we ask about the North End Water Treatment Plant. He mentions other projects including Centreport and Parker Lands/Rapid Transit. 28.40 - What's going on with spending another $1.2M on Goulet? "I'm not sure because Goulet I think was basically completed. " When asked if it could be the installation of an unconsulted bike lane, Browaty spoke about his view of the misnomer of winter cycling- "I believe it's a waste"- using seasonal infrastructure, where new lanes should go- and where they rank as a spending priority. He gives a history lesson of the booddoggle of the Assiniboine bike lane in 2010. 33.10- We asked Browaty if money refendums could bolster public confidence in civic democracy. He explains why he agreed to postpone the blanket Fourplex rezoning hearings. * The Season 5 Funding Drive is within $700 of the target- use the Donate tab to contribute today! 38.10 Part 4- A review and updates on Marty's Sun reports and columns, and audience comments, including- 47.00 Evidence safe consumption sites bring more crime and disorder can't be ignored https://winnipegsun.com/news/local-news/gold-evidence-safe-consumption-sites-bring-more-crime-and-disorder-cant-be-ignored 49.00 Lukes' Christmas gift to Transit scofflaws- keep ridin'! https://winnipegsun.com/news/local-news/gold-lukes-christmas-gift-to-transit-scofflaws-keep-ridin You'lll hear about Ottawa's ticket blitz on freeloaders, with over 1900 fines issued. 55.15 Living Near Jubilee Station Risky for Women and Kids https://winnipegsun.com/opinion/columnists/gold-living-near-jubilee-station-risky-for-women-and-kiids Will Coun. In Episode 35 you'll hear the story of our big scoop in the Winnipeg Sun, getting word out of the location of the NDP's planned "Safe Consumption Site". It ruined their attempt to stage-manage the public consultation process and divide the Point Douglas community. The controversy continued to play out today but with the cat out of the bag, Premier Wab Kinew is desperate to maintain control of public opinion and squelch opposition. Part 1- Readers and Listeners across Manitoba continue to voice enthusiastic support for the style and content of our efforts to get right down ta' business and tell it like it is at City Hall and at the Legislature. You'll hear some comments and insights into the issues we are covering for the community. There's also a brief review of our Sun analysis last Sunday after we discovered the City of Winnipeg has no data about how many free needles are given out in Winnipeg, and how many dirty rigs are tossed onto our streets and parks, spreading danger and disease. https://winnipegsun.com/opinion/columnists/gold-free-needles-how-many-the-city-of-winnipeg-is-hiding-the-facts How can Mayor Scott Gillingham stand up to the WRHA and make sure they make it right? 16.00 Part 2- Marty Gold explains how the Kinew government couldn't keep the location a secret, and why they wanted their "harm reduction" den address kept from Point Douglas residents and property owners as long as possible. The Sun website has the scoop- Safe Consumption Site location not-so-secret any more Learn about the far-left ideology that demotes public safety and the role of affected residents in the consultation process, and bestows special status on strung-out drug addicts. That's one big reason why there's almost no restaurants open for late night customers, affecting the quality of life for all Winnipeggers. The Point Douglas Residents Association has voiced not only concerns about the possible consequences of a magnet for drug users in their neighborhood, but say that this situation reveals a weakness in the representation available by their MLA and on City Council. 31.00- Hear how the rest of the Winnipeg media scrambled to cover the story, with none of them crediting that the Sun broke the news; then you'll hear the lie told by the Health Minister that resulted in our follow-up report today, proving there was serious pushback against her PR campaign. ‘Homelessness is a business': Pushing back on NDP's proposed drug user hub From a reader: "As much I hate to say it, Audrey Gordon was a lot better health minister then Ozuma Asagwara" 37.35- Part 3— More about the relentless siege of 500 Waterfront, with details about the way CentreVenture misled the owner about how the street was going to be "the Tuxedo of downtown"; instead he's had to spend $40,000 to keep his tenants and employees safe. Stolen water, stolen electricity, and meth users staggering into the building and parking lot causing damage and disorder, all of which he's told Gillingham, Kinew and dozens of city offiicals and non-profit managers about. He says it started with Brian Bowman putting his career goals ahead of the public, lest he be accused of "racism" for having law and order imposed on the homeless criminals. He says that the "shooting gallery will turn Winnipeg into Vancouver." 45.50- A Free Press columnist smeared the residents and property owners being concerned about more crime being caused near the planned drug site as spreading "misinformation." What is misinformation, is Tom Brodbeck ignoring the lived experience of people in Vancouver and Edmonton and of folks in Toronto, where a woman was shot and killed in a gun battle between drug dealers outside a user site. What Brodbeck got wrong, is denying that "Harm Reduction" causes harm to the neighbourhoods; what he got right was, Kinew tried to skirt proper and transparent consultation, and may pay a political price for it. The continuation of our interview with St. Vital councilor Brian Mayes has a few surprises for Episode 18. Part 1- A shout-out to our listeners outside of Manitoba and the readers of Marty's column sin the Winnipeg Sun. Hear a review of the impact of recent stories about Plan20-50 as an example of the work supported by our sponsors and donors. 8.28 Part 2- Civic issues relating to public information and consultation, and city staff falling far short of their duty: - Is the city Transportatation2050 plan merely formalizing an existing administration practice to "Design streets with emergency vehicles in mind?" Mayes confirms that even as chair of Community Services, he has "no memory of ever talking about that." He commits to asking how city staff decided there was not a "significant" delay to emergency service response caused by the Goulet bike lane bottleneck. 14.30 - Mayes says it was a "poor" decision by bureaucrats to give only one day's notice about pop-ups at local malls to explain Transportation2050 to the public. (Their excuse? it's not part of the public consultation process so there's no minimum notice required.) He agrees that the purpose of those sessions is to give residents a chance to evaluate the plan and then tell their councilors what they think. The limited times and venues chosen excluded too many Winnipeggers. "You'll show up at the mall? And nobody will spot that (pop-up)... I feel a town hall coming on." Mayes will be focusing on the lack of planning for modifying St. Mary's Road to manage traffic flow. 18.00- Hear Mayes describe: - How planners made assumptions when no money is alloted, wanting to "authorize density on the idea that oh, there'll be a bridge here (to the U of M)... it just seemed hare-brained." - "I voted for a bunch of this stuff under Mayor Bowman's fairly grandiose plans and the bills are now coming due... I think we'd be better off saying we can't afford to do a ton of this stuff, let's revise Our Winnipeg down to a much shorter list." - "The disconnect between the planning and the transportation has got to get better." - Mayes compliments transit planners for paying attention to residents in his ward - The city transportation plan was going to be subservient to the Metro region Plan2050, yet city bureaucrats admitted the WMR plan was only 'alluded' to in the City plan. - Mayes has concerns about water and sewage capacity as housing expands in the city and nearby RMs. "We can all say we want more housing but at the end of the day, we got to have a sewer system that can handle that and I'm not convinced that we do." The Season 5 Funding Drive is at $2905, with a target of $5600. Email Martygoldlive@gmail.com to arrange to support the podcast and ActionLIne.ca today! 32.00- Part 3- Crime and Public Safety update We have the latest on the August closing of 3 convenience stores, in EK, St. B, and the West End. 40.25 - You won't believe the extraordinary measures that retailers are taking to secure snack and grocery items. These closures and security concerns are devastating to the employees and degrade the quality of life for the community. - A trio of intoxicated teenage thugs - armed with a machete and an ax - ruined the lives of a 15 year old boy on Selkirk and an 80 year old homeowner on Pritchard this month. The north end wonders, do these kids have a social worker involved? Maybe Nahanni Fontaine can tell them. The new column in the Sun exposed years of complaints about cyclists and others racing at high speed over the Tremblay bridge into the Archwood neighborhood. Animals have been hurt, and private property damaged. https://winnipegsun.com/opinion/columnists/gold-speeding-cyclists-on-collision-course-with-homeowners St. Boniface councilor Matt Allard did what he usually does when aggressive cyclists endanger the public- nothing. An unexpected Episode 14 tells the story of what really happened in Niverville on August 8th, when the public demanded to be heard by a shocked Winnipeg Metropolitan Region board. Interviews and audio help deliver the details about the scene. 6.10 Part 2 - Marty Gold reviews the obvious red flags and how WMR staff completely failed to prepare for the groundswell of public concern. No one should have been surprised the second hearing attracted a bigger crowd than the first one. 9.30 Don Woodstock describes the RCMP on the scene- "the organizers of this event recognized very early when the room was 3/4 full, that there was more people outside than in the room." Hearing chants of "let them in" from those granted entry and "shut it down!" from those excluded, "I recognized this won't go away quietly" and the RCMP could not get them to leave. 13.00 - "They cannot have the meeting inside and have more people outside who want to have a voice." Woodstock criticizes how "all the able bodied men" on the WMR board including Mayor Scott Gillingham took no action and "they let this little lady (a staff member) face that crowd and she was petrified." Helping her address the angered crowd in the lobby he says the WMR "wanted to ram this hearing through until I insisted those people outside are not moving until we move." 17.00 - Hear audio of the announcement by WMR chair Michael Moore of the postponement of the hearing, which dispels fake news it was caused by "incidents". 23.00- While the audience was told the session would be reconvened in a larger venue and 40 days notice would be given, "nobody's making a move" to tell the 300 waiting in the lobby. "Gillingham and all of the mayors and so-called men, if they were leaders, they would have got up and talked to them... if they didn't make a decision inside soon, that would have boiled over. " 27.30 - It was left up to Don Woodstock and Marty Gold to calm the people down. At ActionLine.ca, we show Steinbach Online video of Marty addressing them. 30.00 - "Why did none of them (think) it best to come out and address the crowd?" Woodstock portrays the Mayor as being afraid to deal with concerned Winnipeggers, which numbered approx. 75% of those excluded- "He was the first person at the table to run away." 35.40 - Marty's theory is that the process is set up to make sure Winnipeg council is bound by Gillingham's decisions. Read his call in the Winnipeg Sun last week for Gillingham to hold a referendum at this link. E-transfers, News tip, comments, email: martygoldlive@gmail.com 42.15 Part 3-- A CJOB newscast falsely claimed there were 'incidents' forcing the postponement and then host Richard Cloutier piled on. He said texts from his stooges alleged 'there has been some disruption at this hearing by a group that wants to get all sorts of publicity, not going to give them the publicity they're looking for". Hear why that was all Fake News. 48.00 Failing to sneak the hearing past the public, a compliant media was recruited to parrot the narrative of Metro planners. Is this a harmless plan to boost job creation? They will baselessly try to smear opponents of the bylaw as rednecks, hayseeds and an extremist fringe and the planners as their all-knowing superiors. 52.00- A brief review of the fears in outlying communities- including those not yet part of the WMR club- about how the plan would infringe on their rights. Would CJOB tell their story? 54.00 Hear Patrick Allard's take away - "if they can't plan a meeting how can they plan our municipalities?" With lockdowns making Manitobans more aware of government over-reach, he explains many believe "private entities staffed by government officials should not control municipal bylaws and zoning and planning and development." He calls on the city to advertise the next public hearing so residents aren't kept in the dark. Another City of Winnipeg fake public consultation, and the Premier admits his approved drug-use site will adversely affect the neighbours, are the focus of Episode 8. Part 1- A recap of recent episodes and Winnipeg Sun columns; Marty also notes the passing of two politically-connected matriarchs in the community. Olga Fuga and Katherine Morrisseau-Sinclair both had controversial tenures heading non-profits - Fuga in the 1980's at the Citizenship Council of Manitoba and KMS around 10 years ago at the Native Women's Transition Centre. The saga with Fuga made headlines, while newsrooms scurried away from the KMS controversy in fear of her husband Murray. Later this summer you'll hear more about their obsession with power, our investigations into their actions, and how the lingering ill-will after they left their organizations affected their reputations. Get a copy of Retropeg when you donate to our $5600 Summer funding drive! Email- martygoldlive@gmail.com 14.05 Part 2- "We have a plan to move transportation into the future" announced the City on Monday. But 'TRANSPORTATION 2050: Reimagined Mobility' is based on far-fetched ideological goals like "Winnipeggers make 50 percent of trips by walking, cycling, transit and ride sharing by 2050." In the winter? We call BS. It smells a lot like '15 Minute Cities' and it's tied into a broader plan for the "Metropolitan Region" that shifts decisions about your community to a board of political overlords from surrounding municipalities. As Marty explains, the last thing the urban visionary cultists at City Hall want is genuine engagement with residents affected by their schemes. So, they rig council approval by holding fake consultations. 'Pop-up public events' being held on short notice (barely 24 hours for the event at St. Vital Mall for starters) will supposedly garner public feedback. The locations and schedule - all shopping malls and none on weekends - are designed to exclude working people with 9-5 jobs who would ask tough questions. You'll hear how buried on page 26 is a claim that policies will "Improve speed and avoid delays for emergency vehicles. • Design streets with emergency vehicles in mind". Since City Hall never once consulted with the WRHA or St. Boniface Hospital about throttling traffic flow on Goulet - we call BS on that too. FOR LINKS TO POPULAR EPISODES & WINNIPEG SUN COLUMNS, AND TO DONATE TO SEASON 5 COSTS - CLICK HERE. 27.35 Part 3 - Wab Kinew admitted to CTV that "there will be an impact when you open a supervised consumption site in terms of the next few blocks around it." At the "Safer Consumption Site Announcement" held a few days later, seemingly none of the reporters there mentioned Kinew's concerns about public safety. Neither did the "harm reduction" champions, some of whom instead lamented that the NDP isn't planning to hand out free drugs to users- yet. 38.00 We identify some of the 'experts' steering the project, and review the experiences of people in BC, Calgary and Ontario who deal with the disgusting and dangerous fallout when a drug den is licenced in their neighborhoods. 43.05 - Local reaction questioned how keeping addicts hooked helps anyone but the poverty industry. 51.30- Hear audio of cops in London identifying the diversion of "safe supply" to organized crime rings. Other things never mentioned in media reports about the site, which our analysis indicates will go somewhere near Siloam Mission north of Logan Avenue: No targets for getting addicts into recovery, no explanation how it will get people using contaminated drugs at home and dying to go to the site to have it tested, and nothing about a reduction in discarded needles. But it will create an army of employees who will depend on there being a continuing stream of drug addicts to justify their paycheques- and new dangers for the people who live and work nearby. Coming up- another interview with a City councilor! THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT

A Winnipeg Free Press editorial derided the residents of Wolseley for fighting City Hall, comparing them to "stereotypical Winnipeggers who staunchly oppose" new policies and are "“notoriously” resistant to change." Sounds like they opposed a bike lane, right? But this time, it wasn't about bikes. This was about buses. In Episode 2 of Season 5, you'll hear about the contempt the newspaper showed for almost 500 concerned residents of Wolseley and West Broadway. (See charts listing their concerns on ActionLine.ca.) Part 1- The contempt starts with the special interest group driving the changes. The Transit lobby demands means the City is "taking the system we have right now and blowing it up and starting over again." For Wolseley that meant bus traffic was aiming where it isn't wanted, risking homes and school kids. A 'Greenway' is no place for a bus. With no routing planned west of Arlington, users there face walking for 20 minutes to get to a stop, in winter, at night. Whose side did the Free Press take? Not the taxpayers or the actual bus users in Wolseley. Their concerns are "cultural obstinancy." The "culture" the Free Press insists taxpayers adopt is that of a group called Functional Transit Winnipeg. It had steered a moderate course under its founder, Joe Kornelson but has taken a radical turn after a former NDP politician from Calgary got involved. You'll hear key background the media- and their own website - doesn't tell you, and you'll wonder why. Then you'll hear what the editorial didn't tell readers about what's at stake. Our reports, interviews and investigations for Season 5 are better than ever- telling the stories the media won't. We earn your support! Help us reach the $5600 summer target by donating here! 16:44  Part 2 - We sample feedback about the meeting, and about the comment of FTU's Brian Pincott- who has lived in Winnipeg for all of 5 years- that the #10 is "the most inefficient route imaginable." Functional Transit Winnipeg and their allies at the Free Press dismissed faked consultation, safety issues, 20 minute walks to a stop, and labeled the residents as luddites. Is that logical? 22.00 Marty Gold exposes how the planners rigged the consultation process after Transit admitted they 'differentiate stakeholders from residents." A previous bike lane audit required the City to treat residents as stakeholders- so what gives? To boot, St. Boniface parents had no idea of the route change. A St. B school trustee laughed it off. 28:04  Forced to re-jig route plans in St. James after Kelly Ryback spoke up, promised discussions with Wolseley users were kaiboshed. One theory: "It would apparently be too disruptive because they are concerned other neighbourhoods uncovering flaws will demand the same." The effect of an Arlington route boundary on seniors, kids and women further west, and whether buses will interfere with emergency vehicles using Arlington south of Portage are valid, vital safety concerns - but not to the Functional Transit Winnipeg lobby group. The media described Pincott's position: 'the biggest challenge for the city is not getting bogged down with individual needs and wants.' Instead, Pincott wants a City hiring spree to plant cheerleaders for the master plan at bus stops. Guess how much it costs? Comments, news tips, Interac donations- martygoldlive@gmail.com The snubbing of people taking time to deal with City Hall was capped off by Public Works chair Janice Lukes. “So maybe it's a year of no transit [in some areas]" No buses for a year? MSM won't explain the impact of her cavalier gamble on going to church, shopping, getting home after basketball practice. "Maybe it's a year of transit on the greenway. It can change after a year.” As Marty points out, it could change on Tuesday at EPC, if councilors develop some backbone and represent the voters and Route 10 transit users, and not the bus lobby. Season 5 kicks off with an in-depth interview with Elmwood- East Kildonan Councilor Jason Schreyer, who takes on bureaucrats, unchecked construction inflation and ongoing City borrowing he says is unsustainable. The 3 term Winnipeg councillor wants a review of the rules around long-term borrowing, especially when it's underwriting infrastructure projects that come in way over budget. “It was not something being talked about regularly” when he was first elected. Now city finances are in trouble. A member of the Water and Waste committee, he also addressed whether the City should be leveraging performance bonds posted by contractors to control spiraling costs. SEASON 5 BRINGS MORE FEATURES, MORE PUBLIC AFFAIRS ANALYSIS AND MORE INTERVIEWS ! SUPPORT OUR $5600 FUNDING CAMPAIGN TODAY! Part 1 - 3:05: "The problem is more and more pressure is being put on municipal governments" since the 1980's, said Schreyer. Council recently voted to finance an extra $23M for a South Winnipeg recreation campus but is draining Happyland Pool over a $100,000 shortfall, which Marty Gold challenged as being unfair to the less affluent St. Boniface ward. "I'm not going to dispute what you're saying," replied Schreyer. "We've got a problem with construction inflation more than any other inflation at city hall.” 9.30- A discussion about contractor performance bonds. How is Council protecting the public interest and who is being held accountable? An example Schreyer has seen first-hand is in our report: Goulet Bike Lane Barricaded, New Lanes A Treacherous Wreck "There should be answers for these questions you're asking." Part 2 - 16.07 - Jason Schreyer notes the media had never once asked him about construction inflation before this interview. He feels that the media contributed to a lack of information for taxpayers “about why costs are going up, increasing all our taxes, fines, fees, levies, and rates at an unprecedented rate and actually reducing services.” The interest being paid on long-term bonds is "not sustainable" and Schreyer agrees that it's time for a review of city practices. Citing the rate of inflation outpacing wages for 30 years, “now we're forced to, relative to the income of Winnipeggers, sell more and more debentures." “I don't feel like its my job to defend the administration or City Hall. Cost overruns happen, (but) we should do a record of how often contractors are actually under the estimates... we should always be vigilant in terms of every single construction contract, yes we should.”   Comments, news tips, Interac donations- martygoldlive@gmail.com 22.10- A former Mayoral candidate has raised the idea of the City generating millions by opening an aggregate plant- and Schreyer said there was a good precedent:   “I'm very grateful to Don Woodstock for taking up these issues. … back in the day, the city owned its own gravel quarry." Hear Schreyer describe his questions about whether the City selling off its quarries had saved any money- and the stonewall bureaucrats put up. "There is no answer from the administration on this. That tells you what kind of trouble we're in. We can't think, 'if the administration can't give answers that's the end of that'- the opposite is true!” Listen for why Schreyer and Coun. Russ Wyatt just pushed off a proposed housing plan on Dawson Road because bureaucrats were unprepared for their line of questioning. "It's the right thing to do." 26:56  The interview concludes with Schreyer focusing on accountability from City Hall and councilors. "I don't blame people for that concern, I have that concern. Do you think I get my questions answered at city hall?" he states. "There is no accountability on the issue of further debt. Because if you really project it… I don't see how it's sustainable... I'm not here to look at things with rose-coloured glasses on." 28:18 - Episode 1 closes with a recap of Schreyer's major points, and our focus on first-time donors for the Season 5 funding campaign!

Part 1 - We open Episode 31 with your comments about Nahanni Fontaine's March Madness- and we add a few more issues we didn't mention yet, to the storm of controversy around her and her department. When the NDP froze foster care per diems in 2012, did Fontaine ever tell Greg Selinger it was harming indigenous kids? Of course not, that might have resulted in losing her plum position as "Aboriginal Women's Advisor." And she'd never have gotten the NDP nomination in St. John's. 18:50 Part 2- A brief explanation of the very negative consequences of the NDP regressing to a 1-1 ratio for trades apprentice supervision. Marty Gold explains what will result: less trainees, less trainers, less training, less homebuilding, more costs to you. The NDP-supporting union is happy with that. 24.00- Happyland Park Pool supporters aren't giving up- but a letter to Mayor Gillingham and city council shows how far trust in City Hall has fallen in the neighbourhood. What will Matt Allard do to help their last-ditch fundraising, and to prevent the City from arbitrarily bulldozing the pool while they try to save it? And speaking of St Boniface, Mrs. Mike's on Tache wants to resume operations and was told it could take up to TWO MONTHS for an Occupancy Permit. Maybe Allard doesn't eat burgers, but thousands of Winnipeggers do. We've asked Allard to get things speeded up and not let St. B be treated like the North End of the South End, yet again. 34.00 Newsmaker of the Year Andrew Marquess doesn't trust City Hall either, and why should he? City planners have invented yet another obstacle to approval of his Fulton Grove housing plan- and of all things, Coun. John Orlikow is empaneled to decide on it. 39:55 Part 3 - Crime Courts and Public Safety Update - A Rally for Justice took place last week, and while the Free Press slanted their coverage to fit their narrative, we will be having organizer Mike Vogiatzakis on the podcast in the next few weeks to talk about his cause seeking to abolish catch-and-release policing. - Two business stories: one a move and expansion, the other of business misadventure forcing a sale, with one thing in common- crime is badly affecting their sectors. It's Brian Bowman's legacy, that never gets pinned on him like it should. - 49.35- Councilor Janice Lukes still hasn't responded to our request for an interview but took a moment to compliment the police for handing out speeding tickets on the South Perimeter highway. That's never been done before by city cops because it's a provincial road handled by the RCMP. Predatory speed traps aren't legitimized just because drivers are duped into thinking the ticket was legal- and it's another reason why no one trusts City Councilors to have their backs. Considering the last spate of tickets near there handed out by cops were dropped by the Crown as illegal - as the Designated Construction Zone didn't include the area they were enforcing the extra-penalty citations - we suggest Lukes makes sure these pass the sniff test before handing out the flowers. The controversial war resulting from the terror attack on Israeli settlements by Hamas on October 7th has affected almost every sphere of society from domestic politics to academia to entertainment. In Episode 27, we look those affects with examples from the macrocosm - the Oscars and the Trudeau Liberal's foreign policy - and then the microcosm, after Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew attempted to play both sides. A rebuke from a former Winnipegger in Israel exposed his shallow understanding of the war to eradicate Hamas, and of antisemitism. Email Comments, News tips or donate via Interac- martygoldlive@gmail.com Part 1- You'll hear about what happened in Hollywood: ‘Zone of Interest' Executive Producer Danny Cohen Refutes Director Jonathan Glazer's Oscar Speech: ‘I Just Fundamentally Disagree' “The war and the continuation of the war is the responsibility of Hamas, a genocidal terrorist organization which continues to hold and abuse the hostages, which doesn't use its tunnels to protect the innocent civilians of Gaza but uses it to hide themselves and allow Palestinians to die. I think the war is tragic and awful and the loss of civilian life is awful, but I blame Hamas for that." 9.00 - National Post: Mélanie Joly visits Israel only to trivialize Hamas's sexual violence After restoring funding to the Hamas front group UNRWA, Joly announced equal funding to both Israeli and alleged Palestinian victims of sexual violence. Then, accompanied by Minister of mental health and addiction Ya'ara Saks, they struck a collegial pose with Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas - a Holocaust and October 7 atrocity denier who makes hefty 'Martyr' payments to the families of terrorists that murdered Jews. Israel's Special Envoy for Combatting Antisemitism, former Montrealer Michal Cotler-Wunsh, "slammed the Canadian foreign minister for perpetuating a “false moral equivalence” between Hamas's coordinated use of sexual torture on Oct. 7 and allegations of sexual misconduct levied against individual Israelis." “Canadian tax (dollars) supporting blood libel inversion of fact (and) law.” "Why is Joly insistent on “all lives matter-ing” the organized sexual violence perpetrated by Hamas against Israeli women and girls?" asked Rahim Mohamed. "(It's) an affront to reality." The 'why' is a political calculation that Joe Roberts described: "Justin Trudeau's legacy will be the abandonment of our allies—leaving a Canada that cannot answer the call of NATO, but happily answers the call of the antisemitic mob. Shameful." 18:33 Part 2 - We dissect Wab KInew's ceasefire call- a gambit to assure the Jewish community he's an ally, while at the same time asserting Muslims are victims of Israel having "little regard for civilians." Ignoring facts on the ground that disprove his concept of how war against Islamists and their supporters is waged and why there's a "famine" in Gaza, you'll hear how Kinew is playing the human rights card to placate the antisemites in the NDP and the pro-Hamas protest mob leaders, revealing "a tremendous amount of ignorance and naivety." 43:41 Part 3 - Marty Gold reads the response from a former classmate who lives in Southern Israel to Kinew's misguided and misinformed statement. Hear how combat to eliminate terrorists is taking place door-to-door, with support for Hamas and Hitler found inside those homes. Instead of Kinew comprehending that like the Nazis, Hamas must totally surrender, "Calling for a ceasefire may be politically correct and an attempt to pander to all constituencies, but it is, in fact, cowardly and morally corrupt. You can do better." Episode 27 concludes with a look at how Hamas has faked casualty reports "because the daily totals increase too consistently to be real... they assigned about 70% of the total to be women and children, (and) in-filled the number of men as set by the predetermined total." Haunted Reddit Stories - Episdoe 173As we close out 2023 and bring in 2024 (our 5th Year Anniversary is coming up - btw) We close out the year, with our friends at Winnipeg Paranormal Group, Kelly & Ashley in the Pod Lounge. Back in October 2023, when things were crazy busy for us, we put up a question on Reddit, "What is your Favorite Winnipeg Ghost Story"., well thank you Winnipeggers, as you did not disaapoint! Most responses are exactly as we expected. Jas and Sher, as well as Kelly and Ashley encounter this all the time....."I don't believe in Ghosts......BUT...." Trust us, we are not pointing fingers, when people start their story with the 'But', because no matter how you slice it, EVERYONE has a ghost story. Denial appears for many, many reasons. Maybe it is how you were brought up? Religion seems to play a factor in this as well. Perhaps, unles you have more definitive proof, you refuse to believe in ghosts? Maybe, just maybe your experience didn't scare you enough and that if you don't believe in ghosts, you can try to explain it away, ie, it was the wind, etc.then its not real. Possibly the realization of ghosts being real, scares the living crap out of you. Maybe if you tell your friends or family, they will make fun of you and call you 'Crazy'. We've all been there...trust me!Whatever the reason in doubting what you see, or if you believe in ghosts or not, we totally understand the 'But'. Stay tuned as we have sooooo many big projects, appeareances and plans in the work for GUTG and thank you for joining us on this ride, so far!All the best in 2024 from Jas and Sher, Happy New Year to all our Creepy Cool Listeners! If you have a local paranormal story of Winnipeg or in Manitoba, please email us at giivinguptheghostpodcast.@gmail.com - or if you just want to say 'Hi'!!! Episode 35 is a special report about our coverage of Winnipeg's troubled bike lane projects. There's more trouble for the Moving on Marion scheme- and after an interview with a city councilor, we found trouble on the horizon for another City parking-killing project, after we clued in the area businesses. When we interviewed Transcona Coun. Russ Wyatt on October 19, he had just heard something. A favorite guest of ours on Kick-FM and on City Circus on Shaw-TV, Russ Wyatt was invited to explain why he raised the Osborne Village bike lane process with area Councilor Sherri Rollins at a committee. 7:04 Bike lane going where?? In the discussion with Marty Gold about the need to "change the culture" at City Hall, he interjected that he just found out about the next target of the urban visionaries- the street synonymous with Winnipeg's working class melting pot. You'll hear the big reveal and the mutual concerns which led to us investigating. 8:16  We kept our eyes on it, and went down to Sargent Avenue. Listen to the details: the West End Biz director confirmed something was in the air and that they hadn't been consulted. Business owners told TGCTS they reject any idea of eliminating parking on Sargent, as they already struggle with rampant theft, crime and inflation. And another factor raised- bike lanes will impede police and emergency response in the West End and to Health Sciences Centre. Marty does some educated guesswork of where the bike lanes would go, how gridlocked it would be, and why no one at 510 Main Street cares- but we do. DONATE HERE- SUPPORT WINNIPEG'S ONLY PUBLIC AFFAIRS PODCAST AND ACTIONLINE 19:32  Part 2- Around the City, the Bike Lanes review: In Wolseley- traffic jams every morning. How's that idling going for ya? In Osborne Village- Stradbrook is now a narrowed clogjam, with parking in the area slashed by over 180 spots. As Wyatt pointed out, why are property owners treated differently for bike lane proposals than for local improvements? On Provencher, the BIZ set the standard, and still are, for taking a stand that bike lanes should "strike a balance between promoting sustainable transportation and preserving the heritage and vitality of our local business community." But on Marion Street a few blocks south, the Norwood Grove BIZ members were caught off-guard and kept in the dark, as we exclusively reported. We have exclusive details on how the City was forced to do another Open House just with them after our investigative series- and we learned the insincere consultation session in September made Marion St. merchants even angrier. Then, hear all about the other half of 'Moving on Marion'- Goulet Street. We describe the fiasco left behind after the project started this summer before council approved the plan - see the photos at Goulet Bike Lane Barricaded, New Lanes A Treacherous Wreck And a good news story- we report the latest from the Transcona BIZ. They caught on to what the City was up to, took a strong stand, and we report the result- the City backed off from taking away parking spots. 40:21-  Listen to more from Russ Wyatt: he agrees the principles of the Assiniboine Bike Lane audit - "we will never do this again" and to provide fairness for all stakeholders - should be enforced by the 7 current Council members who voted for it in 2012, including him. But he stresses - the problem with these faulty bike lane projects starts at the top. 45:00 Part 3- Why hasn't the mainstream media reported on any of this? And, why we do. Marty explains his extensive history at City Hall going back decades and as an advocate for the average Winnipegger and small businesses. Episode 28 is a Crime Courts and Public Safety report: shocking developments in Winnipeg have submarined a public relations effort by prominent officials to portray our city as "the best blend of everything Canada has to offer." A Saturday Globe and Mail clickbait article of "Canada's most liveable cities" placed Winnipeg at #3 Overall. WRHA head honcho Dr. Joss Reimer took to Twitter to cheerlead the rankings. But while Reimer, Mayor Scott Gillingham, and the urban visionary messiahs hopped on the bandwagon - "#1 for raising kids!" - another set of 'data-driven rankings' exposed the absurdity of their campaign. Because as the Globe piece said, "Even if you could afford to live there, would you want to?" Marty Gold reveals the Crime Severity Index and the inconvenient facts that MSM won't tell Winnipeg. You'll hear how just how violent StatsCAN says Winnipeg scores at after the 8 year term of Brian Bowman as Mayor, and which categories we are shamefully number one in. This is his legacy. Among neighborhoods with a violence score over 700, Winnipeg make up 9 of the most 10 dangerous in the country - and 17 of the worst 26. And at number 26: West Broadway. 16:57 Part 2 - We recap the mystery surrounding the shooting spree inside a Langside St. rooming house on Sunday morning - with unreported details of the history of the property and of the drug-dealing past of one of the 4 victims. A local newspaper managed to print 2 different versions of life on Langside, but only one is correct. We compare a local government-funded community patrol claim that "West Broadway is normally a pretty quiet neighborhood" with the lived experience of a mother who "has heard yelling and fighting and gunshots often in the area." You can decide who lied. Also- an unaccomplished Liberal MP from gang-ridden Surrey, BC, tried to twist the killings into an online attack on Trudeau's opponents - and in short order Ken Hardie was exposed as a total moron for even suggesting the killings were "far-right". Meanwhile, a suburban City Councilor got the same treatment from critics for inserting the dog-whistle word "hate" into his post, which even riled up a usually mild-mannered downtown businessman. Hear all about it. 38:04 Part 3 - Court time is coming up for the Hamas-supporting "Queers4Palestine" and the other radical antisemites in Winnipeg. The railroad companies want a court injunction to stop further interference with their operations. Guess what the train-blockers were chanting for on November 20th? That's right, more killing of Jews. And they aren't alone. As you will hear, TGCTS has learned Winnipeg police are investigating an online hate-spouting video that included a well-known Winnipegger among a group praising Hamas and Hitler. Of course, they'll claim they're just "pro-Palestinian". In conclusion, Marty warns that there's a morally deceptive movement funded by Iran and other anti-West elements who want to turn our society against the concept of "Never Again". Almost simultaneously this weekend, Facebook groups from 2 neighborhoods voiced the same concern- "No Street Lights" In River Heights and St. Boniface residents started piecing together what they- and Marty Gold- have noticed for weeks and months. Episode 25 compiles those observations into an undeniable conclusion: Manitoba Hydro is failing to provide an essential safety service, and City Councilors who mouth platitudes about "public safety" aren't standing up to be counted. From Grant to Tache and from Corydon to Norwood Flats, the street lights aren't on. And it isn't just in those districts - from the West End to the Main Street strip, areas where fear of break-ins and muggings is already peaking, darkness looms over anyone needing to walk home from a late night shift or to catch a bus. Whether it's a daytime triple stabbing in Osborne Village or an evening shooting near Health Sciences Centre, the neighbours both said the same thing - 'we gotta move'. TGCTS reviews the details of the stabbings and the stabber, who seems linked to the homeless encampment near the Osborne Bridge. What don't city officials mention when they discuss "services" provided free of charge to those camps? Osborne Village has had an 82% increase in crime since 2019. Will the area MLA - a certain Manitoba premier - and the area councilor take a stand for the people who thought going to the drug store was a safe decision? Here's what one of their Village constituents, a father with small children told the media: “What kind of human wants to live in this kind of environment, where you could be subject to a random variable. I don't know what to do anymore. It's just a constant issue.” ****** Coming up: Opposition is building against Mayor Gillingham's rush to meet federal demands and change zoning rules to access federal cash- which neighborhoods will be the losers? Is City Hall trying to sneak another bike lane project past a local Biz Association? We are on the case. Episode 21 reviews a heated online debate about the mandate Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew gave his new Health minister to establish a supervised drug consumption site in downtown Winnipeg. This, after criminal behavior and social disorder has helped drill attendance of the NHL Jets to record lows. Citing the NDP policy directive, a former city councilor tweeted: "In case you were lacking in reasons to NOT go to downtown Winnipeg—here is another one." A local sportswriter portrayed that point of view as uncaring, and claimed that critics of the proposal to enable addicts "have no clue what they have against them." Marty Gold reviews the replies and back-and-forth debate that demonstrated that in fact, Winnipeggers have very good reasons- including a Stanford study that "points towards safe injection as a grower of drug addiction and crime. Not a preventive solution." NDP apologists hate when people ask if a downtown site will negatively affect public safety as it has in other Canadian cities. We are YOUR voice - paypal.com/paypalme/MartyGoldMedia At issue is whether overall, disease transmission, health outcomes and addiction treatment uptake actually improve, as "Recent analysis of the population-level effects of overdose prevention sites and supervised consumption sites in B.C found no changes to trends in monthly hospitalization or mortality rates." Meanwhile Prime Minister Trudeau, who has thrown billions at Jew-hating regimes overseas, holds selective, unannounced meetings with the Hamas sympathizers while the NDP caucus that props up his government assails Israel for defending their country. What does "proportionality" mean to "progressives"? In conclusion, listeners are told how Jewish Canadians now fear for their personal safety, and are asked the question- what would you have done in the 1930s when Jews were threatened and attacked? Nevertheless, Moed is making Israel's position clear on who is behind the unprecedented surprise attack by Hamas over the weekend that has killed at least 700 Israelis, wounded thousands more, and saw Palestinian terrorists kidnap over 100 people, including possibly two or three Canadians. While Moed said Iran was clearly the mastermind behind the Hamas onslaught that began Saturday Oct. 6, he suggested that the international community, including Canada, should rethink its habit of sending funds through the UN to help Palestinians in Gaza, since that money winds up instead being used to incite terrorists who carried out “barbaric” acts of hatred of Jews and Israel. Since 2016, when Canada resumed funding the UNRWA (the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East), the Liberal government has sent or pledged at least $300 million. Our track record proves it. ***** 10.20 - Part 2 - Can Manitobans measure the return on investment of searching for the bodies of murder victims? On Thursday the government of Manitoba decided the logistics of  searching the privately run Prairie Green landfill for two women who are believed to be victims of an alleged serial killer wasn't worth the risk. A study had maintained it would cost $184 million and require 40 staff, including managers, elders and knowledge keepers, analysts, technicians and hazmat personnel. The study referenced the distress to the victims' family members and Indigenous communities if a search wasn't paid for. The AMC claimed the study outlined a safe way forward. One Chief argued "If this was your loved one that was in the landfill, wouldn't you do everything in your power to try and bring that person home?" After meeting with family members of the 2 victims to reveal the PC's aren't paying, Premier Stefanson and Reconciliation Minister Eileen Clarke issued a statement. Marty breaks down the liability aspect ie "cannot knowingly risk Manitoba workers' health and safety for a search without a guarantee" of finding remains. Is that too harsh, or is it a sound judgement? The government also cited "long-term human health and safety concerns that simply cannot be ignored." We risk lives to saves live all the time. In this case the argument is different: it gets emotional, it can be used for political leverage, and it's not saving lives this time - it's about dead people. What part of the story about their alleged killer has dropped from media coverage? Do 'human rights' factor into evaluating the demands to dig? There's other questions to be asked and considered. Noting the commitment to "address the many sources of violence against Indigenous women and girls", Marty thinks that after turning down this $184M project, Stefanson might consider instead tossing a mere 10% of that to prevent more murdered women being connected to the Main Street strip. The boyfriend of the late Falin Johnston and others near the June 26 scene spoke of the fright and terror any Winnipegger walking the 4 blocks north of City Hall and crossing the street. She was apparently assaulted outdoors, and died in her room. She had spoken up about core area danger for women. Marty gives the brief history of the skid row subculture that has been perpetuated for 40 years and asks why these comments are ignored: "How much money do people have to make around here … before we actually get police around here and security to protect us?" "People call it no man's land. Nobody cares what happens to them." Keep in mind, this mayhem spreads south towards the Exchange and Ellice Avenue. Instead of a landfill excavation, we float a few proposals to save the living. There are police at the Millennium Library, but the area outside the Salvation Army is currently far more dangerous. Winnipeg does not have emergency, overnight shelters, exclusively for women. Why not. It won't cost $18M. In Episode 28, we look at how a city councilor was schooled by outraged transit users, and then at the polls that the Manitoba NDP fears. With the snow melted off of city sidewalks, St. Boniface councilor Matt Allard had to find a new topic to flog. It's actually not 'new', because Allard has simply returned to his one of his 'urban visionary' pillars, public transit. In a social media posting on Thursday he managed to restrain himself from the kind of climate doomsday hysteria he hectors fellow councilors about in policy debates, and stuck to the basics. I take a bus from Windsor Park a lot, he said, and here's how I do it, and here's what I think needs to be be improved. Unfortunately, he also insulted the intelligence of just about everyone else in the community with this head-splitter: "... despite all of these advantages, many Winnipeggers don't take the bus because they don't feel safe. The bus is a public space and like other public spaces there are safety risks. There are also safety risks when travelling by car, so much so that Manitoba Public Insurance started the Save the 100 campaign, a campaign that points out the 100 people a year that lose their lives in traffic collisions. Once on the bus, chances of fatality are almost nil." Marty compiled the heated reaction to Allard's dismissive attitude from Facebook and Twitter respondents, and from a few loyal listeners who swiftly sent in their own observations. Among the highlights: "This has got to be the dumbest comparison I have ever heard." "Are people getting knifed and seeing their children beaten in their own cars?" "The last time I was on the bus, someone went unhinged and started screaming like crazy. My kid still talks about that. Not worth it. " ** Help support our independent community reporting via paypal.com/paypalme/MartyGoldMedia ** Allard seems unable to grasp the obvious reasons why Winnipeg Transit is failing, but one user gave him a helpful summary - "Fares are high; Buses are off schedule constantly; Many lines come so infrequently that they can add hours to your ride; Peggo is slow to the point of uselessness." Hear how one woman coincidentally had tested his idea to reduce her private vehicle use - and how far short that experience fell from his utopian vision. A few of the comments came from transit users in Allard's own ward, where criticisms abound about poor service near St. Boniface Hospital, fare-jumpers, and filthy bus shelters commandeered by homeless addicts. This segment reviews a laundry list of shortcomings and failures, from scheduling to routing to no service on Sundays like it's the 1950's. That's aside from riders having to watch out for used needles and machetes. It was also pointed out the absurdity of Allard's suggestions for a new app and other changes, when the entire rider experience collapsed on his watch as Public Works chair. Lastly, a former transit operator of almost 4 decades dumped on the toxic management of Transit and spilled the beans: "There is no safety on a bus." This a startling example of how hard-left ideology among our elected officials is detached from the everyday ramificiations of their failed policies for working class voters- and for bus drivers too. 31:14 - Part 2 - While the headlines blare "Manitoba NDP continues to lead Tories", the devil is in the details. Listen to the polling numbers and the way the margin between the opposition and a provincial government facing "overwhelming dissatisfaction" (according to an Angus Reid poll) has shrunk by over 66%, from 18 points to only 5 now. With the Liberals fading fast, Marty explains how a German word about chess tactics comes into play as Wab Kinew and Heather Stefanson enter the election period facing a sceptical electorate.
