Regardless of where you live, societies are feeling the threat against certain freedoms and are fighting back. Humans innately don't want to be oppressed or censored by larger, more powerful and dominant groups. But exactly how do you define your freedom? Is your freedom tied to your “rights'' or is your freedom independent of that? Sebastian Junger, best selling author, Afghanistan war correspondent and more has authored a new book, Freedom, that will leave you shocked, perplexed and challenged in many ways. In this conversation, he and Tom take a deep dive into freedom, what it means for different societies, how smaller groups are able to give larger groups and armies hell, and are willing to risk their lives for their freedom. Sebastian also shares his 400 mile experience walking through America with a group of friends and reflects on different feelings of freedom. His more recent near death experience will shock you and give you yet another perspective of freedom worth fighting for Order Sebastian Junger's new book, Freedom: https://amzn.to/3rr8tP1 [Original air date: 7-22-21]. When it comes to expressions about skin, the English language is not lacking. For example, we can be thick or thin skinned, or have someone under our skin. To show indifference, we say “it's no skin off” our noses, and when we get excited we “jump out of” our skin.  The sheer number of different idioms reflects the deep links the skin has with our brains. Sometimes these links are visible and give away our feelings, when we blush, go pale or get goosebumps. The same can be said for stress too, in the case of some skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis. How does the skin send information to the brain? What impact does touch have on our brains? How does touch affect health then? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! To listen to the latest episodes, click here: Why was Kanye West's Twitter account suspended? We often focus on words or actions when it comes to building attraction, but one of the most powerful tools for increasing intimacy and arousal is much simpler—touch. Physical contact releases oxytocin, commonly known as the “love hormone,” which plays a crucial role in creating emotional bonds, increasing trust, and boosting sexual desire. Whether it's a gentle brush of the hand or a long, intimate embrace, touch can significantly enhance your connection with a partner. In today's episode, we'll explore the science behind touch and how you can use non-verbal cues to deepen emotional and physical intimacy. For this final episode of our bonus series on boundaries, our listener question is about struggling to say no to physical touch from their partner when they don't feel like it, and wondering “is there something wrong with me when I want space?”No, dear listener, there's nothing wrong with you, and that goes for anyone listening who's ever felt the same. It's okay to want space sometimes, it's okay to express what kind of touch does or doesn't feel good to you, and more than anything, it's ok to talk about these things. So many of us have come from homes and cultures where we were never taught how to say no or have had experiences where we wanted to say no and couldn't. When that history gets carried into our relationships, it can show up as unspoken feelings, resentment, and shame that gets in the way of having those open conversations that make sure there is real, enthusiastic consent. We're so glad that you've stuck with us through this extra-special bonus series, and we hope that in listening, you're inspired to explore your own boundaries with compassion, and bravery. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with you for saying no.You don't get to set boundaries and not disappoint people. That's not a thing.Everyone assumes disappointment is bad…what if it's not?Disappointment sucks…but it's not useless.Say yes to disappointment, not because it's good or bad, but because it's part of life. This episode is brought to you by Therapy Wisdom.Share your questions with us at whydoesmypartner.com/contactIf you want to dive in deeper, consider attending our upcoming workshops. Huberman Lab Podcast Notes Key Takeaways “Nothing related to our mood exists in isolation.” – Dr. Andrew HubermanSleep is a critical component of happiness: viewing direct morning sunlight within 30-60 minutes of waking will help you fall asleep and stay asleep at night, and optimize cortisol & adenosine levelsMoney can't buy happiness but it does buffer stressNatural happiness vs synthetic happiness: Natural – is associated with obtaining something either through gift or effort; Synthetic – obtaining through the action like focusing on social connection as a means to enhance happiness The link between natural and synthetic happiness is the presence and attending to things deeplyWe need to make an effort toward being happy: focus on the things that bring meaning and engage in things that bring meaning – adjust home and work environment so it's pleasant for youHappiness has two major components: meaning and connection Tips to increase happiness: (1) give money/effort/time to someone in need in an amount significant to them but manageable for you; (2) stay present and focus on what you're doing, even if it's not an activity you particularly enjoy; (3) build quality social connections; (4) consider a dog whether it's through having a pet, dog walking, visiting the shelter, etc.Make decisions with conviction: if we make a decision and stick to it we are happier than if we make a decision but have the option to change our mind – take the other options off the table after you've made a decisionRead the full notes @ podcastnotes.orgI explain the science of happiness, including the different types of happiness and how our actions, circumstances and mindset control them. While it is difficult to standardize happiness from one person to the next, I outline a structured framework of what is critical to increasing your innate “natural happiness,” including financial security, purposeful work and relationships, and I explain specific tools to increase internal happiness (so-called “synthetic happiness”). I review how specific types of human connection and attention to our choices (or lack thereof) can increase or undermine our level of happiness. I also discuss the importance of certain types of physical contact, gratitude, financial choices and volunteer contributions that research shows can maximize happiness. And I discuss how factors such as children, pets, physical well-being, substance use, prior traumas and life-phase milestones affect our quest for and depth of happiness. In this podcast episode, MRS Bulletin's Laura Leay interviews Michael Dickey from North Carolina State University about his work manipulating liquid gallium. When submerged in an aqueous solution, liquid gallium will form a sphere. When fed by gravity through a thin nozzle that is surrounded by aqueous solution, it will instead flow into the shape of a wire. Passing an electrical current through the liquid metal wire means that a magnetic field is created, which means the wire can be shaped using external magnets, following the Lorentz force. This research was published in a recent issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (doi:10.1073/pnas.2117535119).

Host and Producer: @jhansiserani Sound designer: @lalit1121992

Touch can have a big impact on your physical and mental well-being: research has linked a lack of touch to weakened immune systems, anxiety, and loneliness. That's why - for the third part of our 'Get Well' series - we're focusing on people who know the true power of touch.

His more recent near death experience will shock you and give you yet another perspective of freedom worth fighting for Order Sebastian Junger's new book, Freedom: https://amzn.to/3rr8tP1 SHOW NOTES: 0:00 | Introduction 1:06 | What is Freedom? 2:49 | Defend Your Freedom 6:04 | Balancing Opposing Sides 8:12 | Root of the Word Freedom 10:51 | 10,000 miles for Defense 15:40 | Society Safe in Numbers 20:19 | Value of Physical Strength 25:12 | Small Fighter Advantage 31:14 | Culture of Honor 41:07 | Agriculture Control 48:04 | Autonomy vs Comfort 53:12 | Social Primate PTSD 58:31 | Importance of Physical Contact 1:03:45 | A Weird 400 Mile Trip 1:06:39 | Seeking Out Challenges 1:08:54 | Freedom Along Gender Lines 1:17:00 | Lessons Raising Girls 1:21:31 | Near Death Experience 1:27:32 | Giving Meaning to Death 1:29:04 | Discussing His Next Book 1:32:34 | Relationship to Fear   QUOTES: “it means that you are not unfairly controlled by a greater power. That you're self defining, within the limits, of course of the laws that bind all of us.” [1:25]   “That's the eternal human sort of balancing act is to defend themselves but then not wind up being oppressed by their own leaders.” [4:43]   “It's very clear that armed aggression is very adaptive, that it helps the aggressive group survive and thrive.” [8:49]   “The idea of freedom really only refers to the people within your own community.” [9:25]   “Going into a foreign country to defend oneself, puts the military in the whole society on more precarious moral grounds.” [12:29]   “first thing you need to do in order to feel safe is to be part of a group that has a kind of common agreement to defend itself against any threat” [16:17]   “The really interesting thing about humans is that a smaller fighter, or a smaller group, is capable of defeating a larger fighter or a larger group that size and strength are not the ultimate predictor of victory in combat.” [23:21]   “The small guy in the ring does not have to win, they just have to keep not losing long enough for this for the larger entity to run out of resources.” [26:12]   “We have an instinct for autonomy, we also have an instinct for, you know, not being uncomfortable and being safe and and having our ease” [49:30]   “In an affluent society, individuals need others less to survive. And so they're able to live more and more individualistic lives that are more focused on their own experience, and less focused on the experience of others.” [54:20]   “As wealth goes up in a society, broadly, the rates of depression and suicide tend to go up and in poorer societies despite the stresses of poverty, rates of depression and suicide tend to go down.” [54:48]   “Where evolution comes from, is testing new things, and evolving physically and psychologically to adapt to them.” [1:07:42]   “Leadership has to be completely selfless, like you need leaders who will die for you. Anything less than that is not a leader. They're an opportunist.” [1:12:59]   “The meaning that we give to life and the meaning that we give to death. It doesn't say anything really about the nature of existence, it says something about how we, as humans, create a place for ourselves in the world on this crazy planet we live on.” [1:28:00]   “Some feelings that you get in touch with, prevent you from doing something that needs to be done. Like that emotional denial is absolutely crucial when you're doing something that is scary or horrifying.” [1:34:04]   Follow Sebastian Junger: Website: http://www.sebastianjunger.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/sebastianjunger Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sebastianjunger Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sebastianjungerofficial/

All infants have a strong and very real need for physical contact. Without it, the deprivation is very real and may be permanent. Your baby's need for touching and cuddling is like food for physical and emotional growth. Your infant's need for physical contact strongly suggests this physical/emotional/social being also needs to be "fed." Without such contact, your child "starves" physically, emotionally, and socially. What to do? That is fairly simple. Pick up your baby, cuddle him, talk to him and make noises at him. Try to spend a lot of time talking with him and physically interacting with him. When giving him a bottle, hold your baby instead of feeding him in the crib or playpen. Several times a day, pick him up and walk around, sit in a chair and rock, and be sure his playpen or walker is not in a room by itself. It's better for him to be around other people than to be by himself. Talk with him and encourage other people to do the same. If someone says, "What a nice baby," ask them if they want to hold your child. Your baby needs maximum physical contact and interaction with a variety of people. …
