We at the Your Mark on the World Center have been sharing podcasts and YouTube episodes of the Your Mark on the World Show - The Social Impact Podcast about crowdfunding for good and other topics for the past eight years. In that time, we’ve had many sponsors but none so generous as Johnson & Johnson’s CaringCrowd. CaringCrowd is J&J’s crowdfunding platform for global public health nonprofits. J&J collects no fees from users and matches most individual donations on the site up to $250. The mission alignment between CaringCrowd and the Your Mark on the World Center has been perfect, making the two organization synergistic partners. CaringCrowd has provided funding not only to continue the show but also to do on-site training for nonprofit organizations across the country. This training, conducted from Montana to Mississippi and New York, has empowered nonprofits of all sorts to become more effective fundraisers, accelerating their various missions from serving the homeless to educating children around the world. It is important to note that CaringCrowd co-founder, John Brennick, has become a great friend and is a true champion of global good. Guided by a commitment to true north, his decisions have always been based around maximizing the impact of the organization for the benefit of the most people. Humans around the world owe their lives to a quiet, unassuming guy passionately working to help nonprofits raise more money. As we bring the show and the work of the Your Mark on the World Center to a close, we want to express our deepest appreciation to the support of Johnson & Johnson and CaringCrowd and John for their trust and support. However much or little we’ve done, we couldn’t have done it without you.

The organization she inspired has now raised $175 million to fight cancer, about $25 million this year. As we approach the end of the run of the Your Mark on the World Show, I invited Liz to return to the show to provide an update as her inspiring story remains one of my favorites. Interview with Liz Scott, the Co-Executive Director of Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation. The following is the pre-interview with Liz Scott. Be sure to watch the recorded interview above. Revenue model: ALSF generates revenue through supporter donations, partnerships with local and national businesses and by hosting special events. Scale: ALSF now has more than 50 employees and generates about $25 million annually What is the problem you solve and how do you solve it? ALSF's goal is to find a cure for cancer. In the meantime, ALSF is funding research to help provide better, less toxic treatments to children with cancer.

When money is often associated with corruption and greed, how can we shift our money mindset to be more confident and unafraid to work with it (given that this is how our world operates), so that we can better use it as a means to help improve our world? What can we do to begin meaningfully addressing the issues of disease, poverty, and climate change altogether?   Sharing his wisdom here is Devin Thorpe, author, speaker, and founder of the Your Mark on the World Center. You'll hear about why having the right money mindset is important for making a positive impact; why corporations aren't going away and what we can do to better hold them accountable for their work; the interconnected relationship between poverty, disease, and climate change; and more. Let's dive in!   HIGHLIGHTS [7:20] Devin: "I think all of us in the sustainability world on some level resent the influence of money. But the fact is–money is what makes the world go round." [11:47] Why corporations are a necessity in our world today and what we can do to require more responsibility from them. [12:39] The fundamentally flawed idea that a corporation's sole reason for being should be to create shareholder value. [20:58] How the issues of poverty, disease, and climate change relate to one another. [24:22] The role of politics in climate change and poverty and how these are nonpartisan issues. [27:04] Devin: "I really think we need to take personal responsibility and never ever, ever forget the astounding need for us to be politically active—we must do both."   Thanks for bringing your light! Never miss another interview! Join Devin here: http://bit.ly/joindevin. The mission of the Your Mark on the World Center is to end extreme poverty, improve health and mitigate climate change. I asked U.S. Senate candidate Jenny Wilson--who faces a daunting challenge in popular Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney--for her take on each of these issues. Poverty: Wilson acknowledged that even here in Utah, many children live in poverty, aren’t sure where their next meal will come from and that chronic homelessness continues in Utah. She asserts that she is in touch with these issues by virtue of her work on the Salt Lake County Council where she dealt directly with issues facing the homeless and other low-income Utahns. Health: After leaving the County Council, Wilson took a job with the University of Utah Health Care system. She has been a vocal advocate for medicaid expansion in Utah, helping to organize a campaign to get a ballot initiative approved for this November. Climate: Wilson acknowledges that there are many climate skeptics in Utah but says such views are out of touch with reality. She promises to advocate for returning the United States to international efforts to reduce carbon emissions and to otherwise protect the environment. She highlights her concern that the current administration will deregulate air quality leaving those living along Utah’s Wasatch Front with dangerously polluted air. Toshiharu Kano, 71, was born seven months after the United States dropped the bomb on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. Pregnant with Kano and living less than 1 kilometer or about half a mile from the center of the blast, his mother Shizzue Neomoto miraculously survived. She took her two children to a nearby military base. His brother, just 18 months old, died within 60 days of the bombing. As a survivor, Kano endured a variety of physical challenges. His immune system was impaired and got mumps seven times. Labeled by society as defective, Kano and his family were spurned. By age ten, he felt so rejected that he seriously contemplated suicide. He was repeatedly told he was damaged goods. Ultimately, Kano and his family immigrated to the United States. Here in the U.S., Kano thrived. He says he's missed only 10 days of work or school in the past 47 years. He attended the University of Utah and earned a BS in mechanical engineering. Around the world, local parks and recreation leaders serve without much notoriety or attention. You will immediately recognize the value parks bring to your community the moment you think of your city, town or neighborhood without them. Beyond the parks, the activities within them provide a lifeline to underserved and at-risk community members. The hydro therapy pool in the Town of Parker in suburban Denver is an example of a community resource that is making a difference there without making much of a splash. Deni Parker, 25, runs the therapy pool programs. The classes--and for now she teaches them all herself--serve only up to a handful at a time. Many of the sessions are one-on-one. A six-week course meeting twice per week costs just $30--about the cost of one session of physical therapy. In other words, the Parker therapy program costs just about one-twelfth as much. Jason Trager is more than a throwback to the sixties or a cliche. He may have earned a PhD at Berkeley with a focus on improving the energy efficiency in buildings by applying statistical process controls, but he's also a hard core entrepreneur who relishes profit--so long as it doesn't adversely impact others. He calls himself and his firm "Sustainabilist." He says that unlike a capitalist who hordes profits and socializes externalities like pollution and carbon, a Sustainabilist hordes profits without socializing externalities. He says, "Our quest is carbon reduction. Every dollar that we make can be linked to some amount of carbon that does not make it into the atmosphere." Sustainabilist, the firm, is working on a number of projects, but one key area of focus is on applying statistical process controls to the process of solar installation. By doing so, he hopes to not only improve the quality of solar installations but also to reduce costs, thereby accelerating adoption. Erik recently made the case for investing in solar now in a post on Linkedin and joined me for a quick conversation (watch it at the top of this article) to talk about the reasons. He offers four primary reasons for considering solar now: 1. The investment tax credit on solar installations will begin to expire in 2020. Given the time required to evaluate, design and install solar, there isn't much cushion in the calendar to take advantage of the tax benefits. If your business evaluated solar power as a way to reduce costs more than a year ago and rejected it, it is time to look again, says Jason Loyet, CEO of Solar Site Design. Solar Site Design has a national network of independent contractors who work as solar originators. The company also has a network of client contractors who pay for the opportunity to bid on the projects the originators find. This competitive marketplace is helping to accelerate projects and reduce the cost of solar installations. The result, Jason says, is installed costs of solar power that are years ahead of recent expectations at under $2.00 per watt. That means that in most parts of the country, a business can install solar and save enough to on utility bills to justify the expense. They’ve created Reverb, a nonprofit, to help the industry get its green on. Adam explains, “The live music industry has historically been highly disposable, creating large amounts of landfill, energy and water waste. Think of all the plastic cups on the ground at the end of a concert or a weekend long festival, for example. Tour busses and trucks guzzle fuel carrying large crews, and large amounts of equipment across long distances every day on a tour. Tens of thousands of fans commute to a venue typically located 40 miles outside of major city centers, contributing to over 80 percent of a concert’s carbon footprint.” Adam recognized that other nonprofits face that Reverb could overcome. “Local and national enviro nonprofit organizations have had variable experiences ‘tabling’ at concerts because they aren’t directly connected to the band or they don’t have the capacity to compete against all the other attractions at a show to get concertgoers’ attention.” Working directly with the bands, Adam says, they can make a big difference. “Because I’m a touring musician myself, I’m able to speak to artists and their managers directly about how we can help make their tours more green while mobilizing and inspiring their fans to take action that adds up to real change.” --------------- Need a corporate social responsibility speaker? There are lots of reasons, but University of Kansas Assistant Professor Jessica Li recently published a paper that explains why some do. Her research shows that people in some countries have distinct reactions to two companies engaging in the same behavior when one of the companies is foreign and the other domestic. Jessica has provided us with three tips for creating a corporate social responsibility program that works. 1. Consumer attributions are key. It is important to understand that CSR is not always perceived positively by consumers. Consumers make attributions about why a company is engaging in CSR, ant these attributions influence their attitudes and behaviors. -------------------- Read the full Your Mark on the World article and watch the interview here: http://bit.ly/2kiHDWK. Electrifying rural America was a key part of the New Deal. The key then was distribution of electricity generated in utility-scale plants. Today, the world is in a race to electrify rural communities in the developing world. This presents an opportunity for entrepreneurs and investors around the world, say Chris Warren, CEO of Clean Energy Advisors, and Erik Melang, co-founder of Distributive Solar. The Solar Energy Industries Association and market analysis firm GTM Research, just published its “U.S. Solar Market Insight” report. The executive summary is available for free here. The summary notes, “Between Q1 and Q3 2016, solar accounted for 39% of all new electric generating capacity brought on-line in the U.S, ranking second only to natural gas as the largest source of new capacity additions.” Most of the growth, according to the report, is in utility scale projects rather than retail rooftop solar. Despite the rosy report, people reasonably wonder about the prospect for renewable energy under President-Elect Trump, who has appointed climate change skeptics to head both the EPA and the Department of Energy. ------------ Read the full Your Mark on the World article and watch the interview here: http://bit.ly/2hXDgBW. This keeps them in a self-made prison.” “These belief systems create a story they tell themselves about themselves and this story is a fairy tale,” he continues. “The fairy tale keeps them wallowing in their own misery but when they become aware that they are OK and have always been OK, the self-made prison is shattered. When they understand this simple yet powerful truth, they laugh themselves silly!” --------------- Read the full Your Mark on the World article and watch the interview here: http://bit.ly/2fPpIXp. She’s leading the new campaign to help everyone understand that even though those with autism may struggle to use words to express love, they still do. Traci says, “KC is launching a new national campaign called Love Without Words. This campaign is designed to show that while people with autism sometimes have difficulty demonstrating love verbally, it does not mean that they are not capable of love.” Traci Johnson, courtesy of Kulture City Traci Johnson, courtesy of Kulture City “We have launched this campaign with different celebrities, influencers and companies,” she continues. “In this campaign, we are having these celebrities and influencers show how they demonstrate love on a daily basis without using words. We then have a call to action to ask everyone that we are reaching how they, too, show love without words. And of course, there is also a donation aspect as well.” Traci notes that people with autism are often poorly understood. “We often face the challenge of people not realizing that children (and adults) with autism are a lot like able-bodied individuals, as well. People often think that just because someone has autism means that they don’t have feelings or emotions. This could not be further from the truth.” The misunderstandings people have, lead to conscious and sometimes unintended discrimination, she says. “We live in a world where there is still racism, bigotry and discrimination and these feelings often are directed towards people with disabilities, such as autism.” ---------------------- Read the full Your Mark on the World article and watch the interview here: http://bit.ly/2giv1Qm. Erik is the founder of Distributive Solar and is partnering with Solar Site Design to accelerate growth in the renewable energy industry. Erik is excited to share “the phenomenal opportunity to participate in the new energy economy.” He says, “This transition [to renewable energy] is providing a ground floor opportunity to participate in one of the fastest growing sectors on the globe.” He shares some numbers to make his point: “In fact solar, wind and [energy efficiency] has provided 1 out of 30 [new] jobs in the US since 2009. Solar alone has provided 1 of 80 jobs.” The transition from fossil fuel to renewable energy will also bring another big shift to distributed power, he says. “We are and will continue to witness the disruptive effects of transitioning from a fossil fuel driven economy to a renewable energy driven economy. This transition will be distributive, where energy will be produced where it is utilized.” “We will see an end to the monopoly where utilities control the production and distribution of energy,” he continues. “This transition is underway and we are seeing parabolic growth in energy efficiency, wind and solar across the globe. However we are still in the early stages of this transition and this is where the opportunity lies.” --------------------- Read the full Your Mark on the World article and watch the interview here: http://bit.ly/2g02rAN. Other times, you hear a story of someone doing something good and you are torn between being amazed and feeling guilty for not having done more. Stephanie Woollard, a Rotarian from Melbourne Australia will receive the Rotary Responsible Business Award at the United Nations on Saturday, November 12, 2016. A Rotary statement says, “In the last 10 years, Seven Women has trained and employed more than 1,000 disadvantaged women in Kathmandu and remote villages of Nepal and impacted 5,000 women through outreach programs.” To better understand how this came about, I asked her how she got started. “As a young girl touring the world like many of us do, I was leading groups of architects to Nepal, through a tour company called Duke of Edinburgh, when I came across seven disabled women operating in a tin shed in the backstreets of Kathmandu. I saw these women were living in dirt, poverty stricken and unable to make an income. I heard their stories of social isolation and struggle because of reasons they could not change and I felt their pain and suffering.” You’re probably like me. After seeing this, I would have shaken my head and said, what a tragedy, before heading on my way. Stephanie did something else. --------------- Read the full Your Mark on the World article and watch the interview here: http://bit.ly/2fhLTp8. Need a corporate social responsibility speaker? While each heads in her own direction, both are having an impact. Hannah Kerchner is a high school student who recognized the difficulty some students had in acquiring a band instrument and that many who were interested couldn’t join simply for lack of a few hundred dollars to buy or rent one. Hannah says, “Around the United States there have been an increasing number of budget cuts in schools and an increasing number of low income families. Due to these cuts music programs have been cut of their funds sometimes completely. Student’s aren’t having the opportunity to be in band any more.” Hannah launched Hannah’s Musical Hope to provide students with instruments. She explains, “To make sure every student has the opportunity to be in band Hannah’s Musical Hope provides instruments to low income students and schools. We take old instruments collecting dust in people’s attics, garages, or houses, refurbish them then donate them.” Hannah’s impact goes beyond music. “Everything is run by high school students so that students also have the opportunity to make an impact in their community,” she notes. ---------------------- Read the full Your Mark on the World article and watch the interview here: http://bit.ly/2eBEmkX. He explains that access to water goes well beyond the need for an adequate supply of clean drinking water. “Almost 1 in 10 people globally lack access to clean drinking water, with women and children disproportionately suffering. The ripple effect of poor health, inadequate hygiene, and lost educational and economic opportunities, traps the most marginalized in a cycle of poverty and disease.” Operation Water is using innovative financing structures to implement large scale water projects. Ryan says, “We engage governments, utilities and contractors to execute scalable, socially critical water infrastructure projects on a Public-Private Partnership basis, utilizing an innovative funding structure that raises debt at attractive rates from Development Finance Institutions and Export Credit Agencies. From project sourcing to deal execution to construction, the goal is ultimately the provision of sustainable, affordable access to potable water.” Ryan identifies two big challenges. The first challenge is that of breaking a new trail. “Our vision is ambitious in size and scope; we are charting a path that has not been walked before in terms of social impact water infrastructure development.” ---------------------- Read the full Your Mark on the World article and watch the interview here: http://bit.ly/2eBSeMk.
