Interviews are the backbone of so many documentaries. They are also very challenging to nail. Especially when you are working as a solo shooter or in small teams, like I do a lot, the amount of things that can go wrong can feel overwhelming. In this video I go over 5 mistakes I see documentary filmmakers, which, if you keep in mind, can dramatically increase the odds that you'll walk away from your next interview feeling good! Our guest today, Austin Meyer, is a documentarian, journalist, podcaster, and animal rights activist, giving a voice to those whose stories might not otherwise be heard. He's worked for HBO, The New York Times, and National Geographic, to name a few outlets, and his filmmaking has taken him to faraway places like India, Nepal, and Zambia, where Austin chose to adopt a plant-based diet. Austin is also a passionate ultrarunner. And on April 15th of this year, with a time of ten hours and seven minutes, Austin showed the world what a vegan athlete can accomplish by winning the Zion 100K Trail Race. This is a must-listen episode for anyone trying to achieve the improbable and for any naysayers claiming it can't be done on a plant-based diet! “I will say one of the interesting elements is that most of the ultra-athletes who I see when it comes to their nutrition game around race day will actually move towards my end of the spectrum when it comes to race day. Like most people aren't eating dairy, they're not having meat when it comes to this day where you need to perform, which is kind of an interesting element.” – Austin Meyer What we discuss in this episode: The major life changes Austin experienced that prompted him to adopt a plant-based diet. How he maintained a plant-based diet while living in a rural village in Zambia. How Austin transitioned to journalism and documentary filmmaking after playing soccer at Stanford. What he experienced and learned about himself in the first few years as an ultrarunner. What Austin eats and drinks while he's training and during a race. What he did differently to win the Zion 100K Trail Race. What Austin is doing to promote veganism. Austin's experiences working with two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nicholas Kristof. Dr. Brad Klontz (@drbradklontz) is a financial psychologist, Managing Principal at Your Mental Wealth Advisors, and co-author of six books on the psychology of money, including Money Mammoth: Harness The Power of Financial Psychology to Evolve Your Money Mindset, Avoid Extinction, and Crush Your Financial Goals. What We Discuss with Dr. Brad Klontz: If the United States is the wealthiest country on Earth, and it's one of the most prosperous times in human history, why does 45 percent of the population decide to wing it with no savings? Why do so many of us buy the hype that bringing in barely enough money to survive from certain professions is somehow noble — and that making a living wage in service to others is akin to moral failure? How parents who have spent their lives carefully growing and saving their own money instill lousy financial habits in their offspring. Why financial planning should be a basic part of the public education curriculum alongside reading, writing, and arithmetic. How social media contributes to a gross misunderstanding of the way wealthy people (the ones who stay wealthy, anyway) really spend their money. And much more... Amanda McBaine and Jesse Moss are co-directors of the newly released documentary, Boys State, which premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival and was awarded the Grand Jury Prize. The film, which is now streaming on Apple TV+, is a political coming-of-age story, examining the health of American democracy through an unusual experiment: a thousand 17-year-old boys from across the state of Texas gather together to build a representative government from the ground up. High-minded ideals collide with low-down dirty tricks as four boys of diverse backgrounds and political views navigate the challenges of organizing political parties, shaping consensus, and campaigning for the highest office at Texas Boys State—governor. In this episode, Jesse, Amanda and I discuss how they came up with the idea to make a documentary about Texas Boys State, the unique challenges of filming a feature length doc in the course of one week, and why a verité documentary like this is such an effective tool for holding a mirror up to our political system and divided country. Henry Maillet is a photographer whose stories focus on conservation and development. After serving for two years as Peace Corps Volunteers in Paraguay, Henry Maillet and his colleague Jeff Wong decided to stay in the country for the adventure of a lifetime. In partnership with WWF, they rowed a handcrafted wooden rowboat down one of the continent's last remaining free-flowing rivers. Over the course of six months the team covered 1,300 km and visited a wide range of riverside communities, from the Yshir indigenous peoples of the Pantanal to the metropolitan capital city of Asuncion. Through photography and recorded interviews, they documented the rich bio-cultural diversity found along the river's banks, and shed light on the critical need for freshwater conservation and cultural and idiomatic preservation along the Paraguay River. Having just finished the expedition, Henry is currently quarantined in Paraguay during the coronavirus pandemic. He and I jumped on a call to talk about the project, how his work as a freelancer is being impacted by coronavirus, and the advice he has received that is helping him stay creative during this unprecedented time. To help guide my reflection, I sat down with my good friend and fellow documentary filmmaker, Joe Alexander-Short, who interviewed me about the highlights, setbacks, and learnings from this past year. In this conversation we talk about how I got my National Geographic grant and why that was such a catalyzing moment for my career, how my background as an athlete influences my work as a storyteller, and what my long-term goals are that I use as fuel everyday. Flight Sim Labs, a software add-on creator for flight simulators, stepped into a PR disaster and possibly some substantial legal issues when it allegedly included a Trojan horse of sorts as malware to combat pirating of its $100 Airbus A320 software. The hidden test.exe file triggered anti-virus software for good reason as it was actually a tool that could steal passwords stored through Google Chrome. Flight Sim Labs had to later explain once they were outed by a user on Reddit that the tool was only targeting those who stole the software. In this episode, Nasir and Matt are joined by good friend, entrepreneur, attorney, and podcaster, Marc Hoag. We discuss the legal issues surrounding this mess of a situation created by what seems an overzealous developer / development team, including hacking, malware, terms and conditions of Reddit, defamation and libel, DRM and anti-piracy, and copyright infringement. Credit to MeowCaptain who brought this to our attention outside of the /r/flightsim subreddit with his video summary. Full Podcast Transcript NASIR: Welcome to our podcast! My name is Nasir Pasha. MATT: And I’m Matt Staub. Two attorneys here with Pasha Law – practicing in California, Texas, New York, and Illinois. NASIR: And this is where we cover business in the news and add our legal twist to that news. Legally Sound Smart Business. It’s been a little bit of time here – almost a couple of months – but, today, I think we have a pretty nice story about flight simulators, and aviation, and software, and piracy – the kind where you steal software. Plus, we have a guest. Right, Matt? MATT: Yeah. As you said, there’s a lot of things in play here, so I think we needed to find a guest who could hit all the checkmarks on this, and I think we found one – at least in my opinion. MARC: Hoag – licensed attorney, aviation fanatic, podcast host, business owner. I think we’ve hit everything we can here, right? NASIR: Startup founder, yeah. You’re right. It’s across the board.Welcome to the show, MARC:! MARC:: Thanks very much for having me, guys! Great to be here! NASIR: Now, there’s only two hosts of the show. I know you’re a perfect candidate to take over our podcast but, you know, there are no openings, but I do appreciate you as a guest. We were talking to him earlier. We asked him if he’s an aviation hobbyist. He said, “Fanatic.” You were saying your wife picks out planes and their model numbers? What were you saying? MARC:: No, I think it’s contagious. We actually recognize flights. We’re up here just north of San Francisco. All the Europe and Middle Eastern flights out of SFO end up arching right over our house here as they head on their way, northeast, out of the bay. Yeah, we actually recognize flight routing and numbers and just call them out just because we’re super weird that way and, yeah, it’s just kind of neat. You see a thing and you know, in eight hours, ten hours, fifteen hours, it’s going to be somewhere else. NASIR: Yeah, that’s really weird. But, anyway, perfect guest.Let me give you some background of the story we’re getting. It is one of those stories where it’s kind of hard to follow but lots of legal issues which is fun for us to cover, of course. We have this company called Flight Sim Labs. They basically create add-ons for popular flight simulators. The one I’m familiar with that’s been around forever is Microsoft Flight Simulator – great name, very descriptive. From my understanding – Mark, correct me if I’m wrong – Flight Simulator by Microsoft is pretty much the main software that everyone uses for both hobbyists and even people that want to train to be a pilot, right? MARC:: Well, kind of. It is still true. It’s alive and well in the after-market community.Microsoft, as you might know, actually stopped developing it quite a few years ago. What took its place was actually a product called X-Plane. It was initially developed by an aeronautical engineer whose name is Austin Meyer.
In this weeks episode, we take a look back at the week’s news and also have special guests, yes two people! Austin Meyer & Ben Supnik from X-Plane! In this episode, we explore all things X-Plane, find out the story behind it, get some insight into the development and also find out what the future holds [...]
You may not know it, but Austin Meyer (www.austinmeyer.com) may have found his way into your home. Certainly it happens a lot. How you ask? Well as founder and developer of X-Plane Flight Simulator, Xavion Glass Cockpit, and as Filmmaker of The Patent Scam Documentary, and as an avid aviation enthusiast that built his own custom airplane, you may have brought him on your own via X-Plane, YouTube, or maybe just his blog. Certainly, the SimpleFlight crew made him part of our family as Rhonda and Marc talked to him about all things aviation and the impact he has had on all of us. And it's not just about X-Plane. When you listen to this week's show, you'll hear about Xavion, and wonder why anyone would fly without it. There's a lot more and we're excited to share the story behind his aviation successes, and excited to have you join in on the conversation, through your comments and follow on questions. Tune in this week to hear the rest of the story. =============== We hope you enjoy listening as much as we love talking to others who share our passion for aviation. Beverly King survived the Las Vegas shooting which left 58 fellow concert goers dead and 851 injured. She's doing 58 acts of kindness each day in remembrance of those lost, to help her reconnect & heal. She reached out to me through the WOKO Facebook page, explaining what had happened and how she felt isolated being in upstate New York while so many who had support were out west. The east coast survivors were scattered from Pennsylvania up to New York, but she felt very alone. She researched support groups and found the 58 Acts of Kindness group on Facebook and thought it would be a way to help heal from this senseless tragedy. She came into one of our WOKO Big Change Roundup events inside the Walmart garden center, a cavernous building that must've brought up a bit of anxiety considering all she had been through. She stoically came in with a donation she made in honor of her 22nd act of kindness, Austin Meyer, who was only 24 years old when he lost his life. It appeared on a simple orange piece of paper and I shook when I held it. Maybe it was because my own son will be 24 in June, maybe because I wasn't expecting it - but it moved me to tears. And we both wept. And I started to feel something we all need to feel more in this country - Connection. Community. Great loss and great admiration for a woman who was thrown unexpectedly into a war zone doing something as simple as watching a country music concert. But she will not back down; she persists. She WILL go to a concert again, and she's listening again to Jason Aldean's music and not allowing this to lay her low, but to bring her up, along with the rest of us. Austin Meyer created a revolutionary flight simulator software known as ”X-Plane”, which should have hid him on top of the world. Instead, it saw him on the receiving end of a patent infringement lawsuit. Not for his software, but for using the Google Play store to distribute it. In response, Meyer spent two years travelling the country in his custom built airplane to interview other small business owners who became targets of similar patent infringement scams, and the result is the amazing and eye opening “Patent Scam” documentary. Austin joins Lions of Liberty to tell his story. Is there any legitimacy to patents? Your opinion may change after listening to this show! Her Twitter following, with 295 followers, doesn’t match Nick’s, yet. She may need a couple of Pulitzer’s to catch him, but there may be nothing like being the “Win-a-trip” winner to put her on the right path. Cassidy says, “I’ve always been interested in the subject matter of Nick’s columns and books, but I decided to apply only after encouragement from my fantastic mentor, Tom Bettag (former Executive Producer of CBS Evening News, ABC Nightline, Discovery channel and CNN — and one of the nicest people in the world).” The seeds were likely planted long before Tom encouraged her. She worked and attended school with the 2014 winner, Nicole Sganga. ---------------- Read the full Your Mark on the World article and watch the interview here: http://bit.ly/2fPolrW. The mind’s ability to envision more than what is physically present in the world is an astounding fact of life. We’re always imagining, thinking, and living in our heads. Our thoughts and our imaginations shape how we see the world, they shape our words and our actions. This is nothing new. We’ve been doing this for all our lives. as far as we can remember. But that’s why we take a closer look and ask the question: how do our imagined lives shape our reality? What happens day to day at the frontier between the worlds we imagine and the worlds we inhabit. Austin Meyer, a young journalist who recently graduated with a masters degree from Stanford, got his Warholian fifteen minutes of fame this year. You see, Austin won the New York Times “win-a-trip” with Nicholas Kristof competition. A host of college students apply for the coveted opportunity to travel with the famed columnist to a destination in the developing world to cover, as only Nick does, the painful stories of the developing world. Austin Meyer and Nicholas Kristof in Nepal, courtesy of Austin Meyer Austin Meyer and Nicholas Kristof in Nepal, courtesy of Austin Meyer Austin shared some of his history with me in preparation for this piece and live interview. He confessed that he didn’t always plan to become a journalist. When I arrived at Stanford, I had no clue what I wanted study. My passion hadn’t been revealed. But in the spring of my freshman year I took an introductory creative writing course in fiction and it clicked: storytelling. The story I was writing in that class was all I could think about. So I followed that impulse. That storytelling momentum. I wrote fiction, nonfiction, audio documentaries, plays, screenplays, and performed improvised stories on stage. I rode that passion to a master’s in journalism. He continued, “As my master’s year was coming to an end, I was looking for an opportunity where I could use my storytelling as a way to truly impact the world. I wanted to combine my drives to tell stories and to fight against social injustices. There was no better opportunity than to join my journalism idol, Nicholas Kristof, who has made a living doing just that.” To get a sense of Austin, I asked about challenges he’d overcome. His response didn’t surprise me. “I have been so fortunate in my life. I won the lottery of birth. I was lucky enough to grow up in an extremely loving family with the freedom to pursue my passions. Especially after reporting on issues of social injustice in India and Nepal, there is no challenge I have overcome that is really much of a challenge.” Upon further reflection, however, he added, “Perhaps the obstacle I overcame that so many of us face, was my own comfort. I wanted/want to do this type of journalism because it is a way to make immense global impact. However, doing so requires a turn towards suffering. It requires reckoning with your own privilege and ego. It requires getting your world flipped upside down. I embraced that escape from my comfort zone, because I know that is what will inspire me to make change in this world.” Read the full Your Mark on the World article and watch the interview here: http://bit.ly/1QWk0yl.
