Living in the NowI grew up in a small town surrounded by tractors so it will come as no surprise to you that I listen to country music. Now don't get me wrong I love some DMX and other old school rappers but country music is really how I was raised. Cody Johnson has a song 'Til You Can't, and he talks about putting things off and having too much on your plate to make time for the things that truly matter. That is the perfect reminder that we need to take action and we need to do it right now. We need to stop waiting to live our lives. We need to make sure that the people in our lives know how much we care. We need to take chances and chase our dreams right now. We need to be present right now. We need to stop waiting for a special occasion or the perfect moment. We all do this. We think when I hit a certain landmark everything will be great. WHen I lose 5 pounds, when I get a certain job, when I have a certain amount of money in my bank account. But why are we waiting? Why don't we live our best lives right now? We need to wear our diamond jewelry just because it's a Tuesday. Sometimes we fill our lives with mundane tasks and to do lists. We overbook our schedules and then we miss out on opportunities. We forget to be intentional and to live our lives fully in the moment. What if you knew that you only had a certain time frame left? How would you fill your days? How would you show up as the best version of yourself if you knew that you only had today. Would you rearrange your schedule and shift your priorities? I guarantee you would. So why do we show up every day and not live the best version of our lives? So today think for a moment about the best version of you look like? How does she dress? How does she act? How does she treat her family? How does she interact with a stranger on the street? Who does she make time to connect with? How does she make sure that the people in her life know that she cares? How does she take care of herself? Each day we have the opportunity to create our legacy. Some days it doesn't feel like that. Some days it feels like we are just trying to make it to bedtime. But you deserve so much more than that. You deserve to be more than surviving. You deserve to thrive! You deserve to look and feel your best every single day! You deserve to live the life that you want. If you needed permission to live your life the way you want to - this is it right here! What step will you take today to make it so that you are the best version of yourself and that you are living your life to the fullest? Join Coffee and Connection for Social WorkersGet a FREE copy of the Ebook Overcome Overwhelm and Create Space for Yourself!Connect with Jen and others on their adventures at Adventures of a New You on Facebook!Instagram at @adventuresofanewyou  Instagram: @codyjohnson Cody Johnson: ‘Til You Can't

    Overcoming Barriers And Resistance

Many times in life we over complicate things. We get in our own way. We have these ideas that things need to be absolutely perfect. We convince ourselves that we have to have things just right. I did it to myself in trying to restart this podcast. First I had to think of the perfect comeback episode and then I created even more barriers for myself by creating this distorted vision that I needed to have a new podcast album cover complete with the perfect photo to jump back in. This was all just resistance - and resistance that I was creating for myself. I was self sabotaging. I was getting in my own way. It's perfectly ok to take simple baby steps towards our goals. We don't have to make giant leap and take on 17 new projects. I constantly need to remind myself of this. Your self worth isn't wrapped up in how many projects you have. So take a step back and look at the barriers that you are putting in your own way by over complicating your own life. Then dial back a notch or 10. Let yourself enjoy slowing down and simplifying. Join my email list by heading to https://adventuresofanewyou.com/ and scroll down to the bottom to the pink box to join the email list! Katie Allen: https://katiejuststyled.com/The Next Chapter: https://www.thenextchaptersellersville.com/Savvi: https://www.savvi.com/jenparkeCanva: https://www.canva.com/join/menthol-grace-select

Episode # 86 Getting Knocked Down

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 29, 2021 23:59

I share my journey because I am right here with you on both a personal growth journey and a professional growth journey.  Sometimes in life we get knocked down - sometimes we have a shift in the way that we thought that our story was going to go; or a pandemic hits; our health changes; we have decision fatigue; we are just completely overwhelmed. It may not even be something completely earth shattering it may be more of a slow slide downhill.  Or sometimes it may feel like the world has been turned completely upside down. But we move through. But we get to decide how we move through. For me I needed some time and space. You know create space for yourself? Well I took my own advice. In September of 2021 I was literally hit by a car. Me - my actual body. But this was just one more chapter of my story of feeling knocked down. Life hands us punches all the time and it is what we decide to do with them that matters. Do you let things fester and eat at you? Or do you take things as they come and continue moving forward? Maybe this was part of what I needed to find my fire again. I had taken a step back from everything to heal and grow but maybe this was the sign that it was time to reclaim my voice, reclaim my power, move forward and share more of my story. Well that was September and this is November so I guess that spark needed to smolder for a little bit. Personal development can be a roller coaster and I am not here to say this is what happened and now I'm all great again. I'm here still in the messy middle to actually share how we work through things. So here we go - this is what has been working for me. I reclaimed my morning routine, a self care plan, a take care of me plan. I learned about chakras and used essential oils designated for those chakras. My girl Arielle created a perfect set of essential oils to help me find my voice and re-open my heart. I used meditation to help slow down my overthinking brain. I moved my body. I ate  real food (ok and ice cream).I am setting my goals. I am putting my needs and wants first.  I set hard boundaries for myself. One of the first things that I did was limit social media. I made time to be alone. I know that nothing that I am sharing here is absolute rocket science. Nor is any of it a magic answer. What I am saying is that when you are struggling what you really need is to take a minute for yourself and go back to basics. I'm talking Maslow's Hierarchy of NeedsWe need to start with our most basic needs. When we have those back in place then we can move forward and keep picking ourselves back up. Thank you so much for listening! In this episode I interview Natalie Vecchione from FASD Hope. Natalie Vecchione is an FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder) parent advocate, homeschooler, podcaster, but MOST. importantly... she's a wife and mom! She began homeschooling 6 1/2 years ago, when noticing how many accommodations her son (later diagnosed with an FASD) needed. After his diagnosis, she began advocating for FASD by being a peer support mentor and facilitating a support group. She is certified in Mental Health First Aid and has been a Board- Certified, Music Therapist for 25 years. Recently, Natalie has volunteered as a board member and social media coordinator for several North Carolina nonprofits. In 2020, Natalie began her new adventure in the world of podcasting through producing and hosting podcasts about FASD.... and she became a "Mom on a Mission with a Microphone". Natalie and her husband John are the co-founders of “FASD Hope, LLC”. The mission of FASD Hope is to provide awareness, information and inspiration to people whose lives have been touched by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). They live in the farm country of North Carolina with their 5-year-old daughter (who just began homeschooling) and 18-year-old son (who just graduated from homeschooling and he is now proudly working as a carpentry apprentice). Natalie is thrilled to begin this new adventure of FASD Hope, LLC and the “FASD Hope” podcast series. Natalie recommended the book Trying Differently Rather Than Harder: Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders by Diane Malbun*The risks of drinking any amount of alcohol during pregnancy*That social workers, parents, foster parents, teachers, doctors all need to know about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder*That we need to focus on our children’s gifts and strengths and not on their weaknesses!*The importance of advocating for our kids!Resources that Natalie recommendsBooks-"Trying Differently Rather Than Harder- Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders" by Diane MalbinFASD Organizations-NOFAS www.nofas.orgProof Alliance https://www.proofalliance.org/FASCETS- https://fascets.org/Connect with Natalie!Facebook: @fasdhope1Instagram: @fasdhopePinterest: @fasdhope1Website: http://www.fasdhope.com/Email: natalie@fasdhope.comPodcast: FASD HopeHave a friend, family member, or social worker that would love to hear this interview? Yesterday I was super excited to be interviewed by Deb Atella for her new podcast that is coming out soon. Deb shared that she started her podcast after I encouraged her to just do it. I had interviewed Deb on my podcast and she casually mentioned to me that she was considering starting a podcast. I love getting to celebrate moments like this when women are bold and step out of their comfort zones to do something that they dream about. I think sometimes it’s so easy for us to encourage other people and it’s so exciting to celebrate when others have the accomplishments of being brave and pursuing their dreams. I was listening to Heather Chauvin’s new podcast episode about her new book Dying to Be a Good Mother As I am celebrating her and in this episode she talked about her book and how we don’t really celebrate ourselves and I just had a giant light bulb moment. In general we do not take enough time to celebrate ourselves to celebrate all that we’ve accomplished. We minimize all that we have accomplished when we should be celebrating ourselves every single day!I am super excited to announce that I will be offering a membership program for social workers! I created a free Ebook, Overcome Overwhelm and Create Space for Yourself as a guide for you to be able to use the strategies that I have learned over time to help you feel confident and empowered. Step 2 in creating space for yourself is learning to delegate! As women we take on far too many things and feel the need to control every aspect of our lives. But this is not sustainable. It is also a complete disservice to our families. Each day we are modeling for our children and if we continue down this path then we will continue to model this unsustainable way of life to our children. Instead we need to teach our children that a family is a team and that everyone needs to work together and support each other. Delegating daily tasks can be difficult at first, but over time asking for help will become easier and if you can have a good system in place you will feel supported so you can excel at the things that you do well. We need to change the messaging that women receive and several women have done this for me! I have read a number of books recently all written by amazing and crazy successful women and guess what… they all asked for help! And guess what else? They are all speaking openly about needing that help! Rachel Hollis, Shonda Rhimes and Michelle Obama! YES! My friend Erin Miller also recently wrote a book called Motherhood stripped and she speaks so eloquently about this as well! We need to normalize asking for help when we need it. Even more so we need to normalize working together so that we don’t have to ask for help. Do you ever take time to reflect on how far you have come? Last night I was working on a project and I remembered that years ago I was interviewed on a radio show, The Female Entrepreneur Radio Show with Kimberle Levin. This was back in 2013 and at that time I had a photography business and I had just started a maternity concierge business all while working full time as a social worker and being a full time single parent. Did you catch all that? Ridiculous right? Any one of those jobs was enough by itself. When I listen to this interview Kim asked me several times HOW I was doing all of the things. When I hear myself describe some of the things I still completely agree and I use those strategies still to this day. Setting limits for how many clients I would see; meal planning; having an incredible village. But then I hear some of the things that I said and I am screaming at myself that is completely unsustainable! And I’m right. It was!. You know what though? That year I did win an award for being the best Children’s Photographer in Bucks County. But I wasn’t living back then. I was doing all of the things, I was “busy” like the real definition of busy! Don’t get me wrong I loved each of the things that I was doing at that point but I was also a hot mess in general. I hadn’t planned to be a single parent, I hadn’t planned on still being at my day job then (for the record I’m still there now) I had a plan to drive one or both of my businesses to the point of being the way to allow me to be a stay at home mom. This is a little funny to me as a pandemic and that day job have actually allowed me to be a work from home mom. I have learned so much since then and I continue on a personal development journey every single day. I have made so many shifts and grown so much so I am much better about holding boundaries and setting limits for myself and my schedule. Some things have stayed the same though. I still have an incredible village and I absolutely could not do what I do without them. I am also lucky because my village has continued to grow and I have incredible support and encouragement from my guy and having someone by your side like that makes you feel like you can be so incredibly successful in whatever adventure that you chose. So today I challenge you to take a look back at your past self and see just how far you have come! Sometimes we need a little reminder about where we have come from and how far we have come to see that we are doing just fine! We can always learn and grow and move forward but taking a little look back in the rear view mirror is so good for us too! That’s all for today! As adults we make countless decisions each day. We make decisions about what to wear, how to parent, what to eat, what to drink, where to go, where to not go, what we want to learn, how we will spend our spare time, how to show up for our partners.significant others, how we can be better humans, what we want to do in 5 years and some of this is enough just in itself. But then you throw a pandemic on top of it. Life right now with everything that is going on has us constantly evaluating the level of risk in order to just do those things. Then you have to calculate/master mind how you’re going to make those things happen because our entire lives have changed our work schedules have changed school schedules have changed our childcare options have changed so in order to make one simple appointment whether for work or to see a doctor there’s so much thought and decision making that needs to go into literally every single little thing that you want to do In order to schedule one appointment for work or home right now I have to literally stop everything else and look at my calendar like I am trying to schedule a world take over. FOR JUST ONE APPOINTMENT. It is is exhausting. It is draining and I am trying my best to protect my calendar, my sanity, and not have to rely on everyone else to cover for me!I know that it takes a village but relying on a village during a pandemic is another level. But there here are a few things that we can do to help us in scheduling our days without losing our minds. But this does take some decision making so get ready. 1. Evaluate what it is that we feel good about doing.2. The next thing that you need to evaluate is the way in which it needs to happen. 3. Then we need to evaluate the people that are going to be at any given event .Just as pre-pandemic you need to hold your time as sacred, You need to decide how you want to spend your time do you make time for yourself do you make time for just your family!Join the wait list for one on one coaching starting November 1!Connect with Jen and others on their adventures at Adventures of a New You on Facebook! For daily inspiration and support visit Jen on Instagram at Adventures Of A New You For inspiration check out Jen’s Pinterest Jen can also be reached via email at adventuresofanewyou@gmail.com

Throughout the challenge we will be talking about ways to attract positive energy and change our vibrations. There are times when we all become overwhelmed and we need to make a shift to feel like a lighter version of ourselves. Each day we will use one simple task to make the shift to overcome feeling overwhelmed and to feel bold and brave.I decided to host this challenge because of my story. I went from living in straight survival mode. I was a full time single parent, working full time and literally just living to make it through each day. I’m not talking one day at a time. I’m talking literally living to make it to my head hitting the pillow each night. I didn’t want to live like that then and I sure don’t want to live that way now. There is too much to enjoy in life to let each day pass by like that. When we are living in a place of stress like that and honestly like many of us are now we just get lost. Balancing work, school and home feels like this space sometimes so as I realized this I knew that I had to put a stop to it. I have done so much work to get from that survival space to the space that I’m in now and it infuriates me that a pandemic has put me back in a similar space. The first part of this is the self awareness of realizing that this is not how we want to live. Then we need to decide that we are going to be intentional and make sure that this is not how we are going to live. Then we need to decide how to get out of that space. Each day we are going to take just one step - a very simple step - a five minute or less step to get out of that space. We are going to make a shift so that we feel better. As we feel better our overall energy and level of attraction will change. As we make these changes we will also become more and more self aware and honestly we will see others changing how they react to us as well. So today’s task is to get dressed! I see you in your leggings, a sweatshirt and a messy bun. And we all know that I love a pair of leggings. I love leggings so much that I freaking sell them. (Shop my favorite leggings here) If dressing your leggings up makes you feel like a bad ass go for it. Throw on some booties a cute sweater but pull it together! Get out of your old tshirt or sweatshirt take a freaking shower and pull your life together. Take a whole shower ladies you know what I mean! Put the effort in here. I know I said 5 minutes. You should take a shower every single day! Be intentional about what you put on. Before you pick out your clothes start with putting underwear and a bra on and not your crappy mom underwear and a sports bra. Put the good underwear on. Then throw together a cute outfit and put your make up on. Not just the mascara that we have been getting away with because we are wearing masks. Put all of it on. Now do your hair. All the way. Brush the dust off your straightener or your curling iron. Bust out your favorite lotions and potions and do it. Top it off with some jewelry. We all know a pair of hoops can totally change the day. But even if you pick one thing. Necklace, earrings, bracelet. Something put it on. Dress like you are going out for date night or to make a great first impression. I don’t care if you aren’t even going to leave the house. You are doing this for you! Let’s just say that if you attract a little extra attention from your dude that’s definitely not going to hurt! Take it! Run with it! Thank me later! Better yet have him message me and thank me!I’m telling you though other people will notice this shift in you. You will notice this shift in you. Getting dressed for the day truly sets the tone for your entire day!Come back tomorrow at 11:30 am in the facebook group or on instagram and see what tomorrow’s task is!

Episode 56 :Leveling up In every aspect of life there are ways that we can level up. We either decide to level up or we decide to remain complacent. We can level up in our careers, we can level up in our parenting styles, we can level up in our relationships, we can level up in our money mindsets, we can level up where we live, how we live. We can level up by being kinder, more patient, more understanding. There are areas that we can grow in every single day. And there are ways that we can do it without complicating our lives. Everyone has a lot on their plate, especially as this is recorded during a pandemic. BUT don’t let that stop you. Don’t let the naysayers stop you. Don’t let your negative self talk stop you. I’m not saying go out and move mountains today. I’m saying that every single day has endless opportunities for us to be better. So I am kicking off of my very first 5 day challenge on October 1. That’s tomorrow. So get ready! The challenge is simple I promise. I will be sharing one simple thing each day that you can do to level up. Simple! I swear. Literally 5-10 minutes or less. But trust me that doing these simple things has helped me so much. I won’t tell you that I’m not overwhelmed at times because everyone gets overwhelmed at times. But I will tell you that I wish someone had told me to try these simple things. It’s funny sometimes because if I truly listen to myself I have told myself some of these things. So I am going to lay it out for you. 5 days starting tomorrow, super simple ways thatThe point of this is to feel a little better, a little more positive, and not so overwhelmed. We are looking at the jump start the last 90 days of the year but in a simple, tangible way anyone can do it kind of way. This year has been a wild ride for so many reasons and now the school has started and many of us have shifted for that. Every single day there are opportunities for us to be brave and bold. But it is up to us to decide if we are going to actually be brave and bold. Yesterday my son challenged me to climb out of my comfort zone and up a really big hill! I was nervous. I hesitated. I full on backed off from the challenge. But then he told me I owed him $10. That assisted me in reconsidering but what really did it was that I wanted to show him and myself that I was brave and bold. Then I decided that I was going to be brave and bold. Then I did it. I climbed the big scary hill. Then I fell on the way down. I’m fine don’t worry and honestly that is classic Jen Parke. But I was bold and brave and I accepted the challenge. And it’s ok to fall!I have been learning about Manifestation with Sausha Davis. If you think about any opportunity to brave and bold if we are thinking about something and doing it in a way that we are putting our desire to brave and bold out into the universe that will only continue to encourage us. We need to face the world with our brave and bold attitudes and not our woe is me attitudes. We need to be grateful for the opportunities that we have to be bold and brave. Every single day we are faced with challenges and we get to decide if we are going to back off or if we are going to be brave and bold. Yesterday it was the hill, the day before it was openly asking women that I admire to be a guest on my podcast, and in the last few weeks it has been joining a new brand and sharing that with others and inviting them to join me in this opportunity!Being brave and bold helps us grow! So today chose to do just one thing out of your comfort zone and do it bravely and boldly! Play Episode Listen Later Jul 8, 2020 14:05

In the past few months we’ve all been forced by the universe to slow down and there have been good things that have come from this. We all live in a world where we constantly hustle and bustle and go from one thing to the next. We go from work, to picking our kids up from school, to rushing to activities to throwing dinner at the kids in the car and we never really have downtime.Having this forced downtime has allowed us all to spend more time with each other.Of course there are negative aspects of this and negative implications for everyone. But there positive things that have come out of this. For many of us working moms we had to go back to work 6 to 8 weeks after our babies were born leaving them in the care of someone else because we needed to be able to provide for them. Many of us have never had time at home with our kids. I was one of those moms.I went right back to work after my son was born. I had to go back to work to provide for him.I had planned to take six months off to be at home with him.But that plan was shattered and my heart was broken but I went back to work.Since that time I have worked. I work while my son goes to school and after care and I work during the summer so he goes to camp. So many moms like me have dreamed of being able to do things differently. We have plotted and schemed and tried to figure out how to be at home with our kids. Well now we have that. We get to be at home and work at home and be with our kids. Granted this time at home has not exactly been what we had always been looking for. We have been trying to juggle work, kids, home, school and even take on challenges that we’ve never been faced before and we are doing it all at once. But there has also been this quality time that we have gotten to have with our families that we would not have typically had. I’ve had time to sit and eat meals with my son. I’ve had times to play games with my son. I’ve had times to do things like build a swingset and start a garden. I've gotten to do things that have always been on my to do list but have never been accomplished because we’re always moving and shaking. We live in a society that doesn’t value rest and doesn’t necessarily value being present but we’ve all had a reminder over this time to slow down do things more simply and just be.So as things are shifting once again and many things are reopening it’s important for us to have learned from this period of time and to value the slow down.As you’re scheduling your time going forward make sure that you are scheduling time for rest .Schedule time to literally slow down.If you have a friend or even a family member that would love to hear this podcast please share this podcast with them and encourage them to join us!Join my mailing list to get My Best Tips For Women Working In Helping ProfessionsSchedule a FREE Coaching call with Jen Connect with Jen and others on their adventures at Adventures of a New You on Facebook! For daily inspiration and support visit Jen on Instagram at Adventures Of A New You For inspiration check out Jen’s Pinterest Jen can also be reached via email at adventuresofanewyou@gmail.com

Episode 52: Real Life vs the Highlight ReelDon’t get caught up in other people’s highlight reels. When people post about their wonderful vacations we don’t share that the cat ran away as we were trying to leave, we don’t share that we packed two bottles of conditioner and no shampoo. They don’t show that they lost their minds trying to get the kids to help get everything packed. They don’t show you that someone got sick and tossed their cookies all over a walmart parking lot. Mom’s get frustrated and then we hide and cry in the shower when we get overwhelmed or stressed. We try to show up as brave and strong and we don’t want anyone to see that we are struggling. But we need to normalize the struggles in life. We need to make it acceptable to share that we need help. We need our kids to know that we have our own struggles and that we may get upset but that we will problem solveLife is messy, really messy and we all need to remember that it is messy for everyone not just for us. Sometimes we look at what other people appear to have and we get jealous. But we need to remember to keep ourselves in check because we actually have no idea what is going on with those individuals and honestly it’s none of our business! Sometimes Father’s day is a trigger for people. You see all of the family’s together and sometimes think that families are supposed to be a mom, a dad, 2.5 kids and a dog. But that’s not what families are. Families are the people that surround each other, show up for each other and take care of each other. That looks different in every situation. Sometimes our natural families are unhealthy, sometimes our blended families are unhealthy. Sometimes you are blessed with a bonus family. You may not get to decide who you are biologically related to but you do get to decide who gets to be a part of your life. You get to decide who you allow to take up your time. You are allowed to put boundaries in to protect yourself. You should put boundaries in to make yourself feel safe. You should stop feeling guilty because you don’t agree with other people. You should stop people from wasting your time. Your time is so incredibly valuable and it is time for us to stop giving our time to people who don’t deserve it. Time is a commodity just like money. We need to show up in our real lives every single day and know that it’s not perfect, some days it’s not even pretty. But we need to make the most of each day and do the best that we can. We need to stop worrying about what everyone is doing or what everyone else has! Put your blinders on, put your phone down and go out and live your life. I shared a post on instagram about taking a break. The other day by 2pm I was done. I was done with work. I was done with parenting. I was done with myself. So we got in the car. We had nowhere that we had to go and frankly few places that you can even go. But I needed that break. I needed that sense of normalcy. I am a doer. I am a mover and a shaker. I’m not someone who stays home… like literally ever. So at some points this being home is frustrating. Notice I didn’t say hard. It’s not hard to stay home. It’s frustrating. Lots of things are frustrating right now. Some things are challenging. Working during this time is a big challenge. There is a constant pull from home, there is a constant pull at work and everyone needs us at the same time and if you are like me you feel like you can’t show up as the best version of yourself in any one of these places because we are being asked to show up in all of these places at one time. There are so many things going on that it is completely over stimulating. Self regulating takes time, it takes practice, it takes being insightful and mindful. Sometimes it takes dealing with shit that we don’t want to deal with. But if you are a bottler then you know that you can only fit so much into the bottle until one day it explodes all over everything and if this has ever happened to you then you know that it’s not pretty and it will likely happen at a very inopportune time. So take a minute right here and just listen. Let your brain just go…. Scribble down your thoughts, or email them to yourself, you can even use the voice memos on your phone. Take a minute and let all of that out and then you can see what it is that you really need. If you want to bounce this off on someone, reach out to me! I am happy to jump in and do this with you!I’m telling you letting your brain go on this rant will give you a clear picture of what your body needs from you today. So dump away and then lean in to what your body is asking for. If your job is in a helping profession then your job is to show up for others every single day and you do. No matter what you are going through personally or professionally. You get dressed, you show up and you give the individuals that you work with your all. But what about you? We have all attended the compassion fatigue training but are any of them very helpful? No you know they are not. I can preach about self care and I can see your eyes start rolling. Who has time right? But here is the thing if you don’t make some and pace yourself you will never make it for the long haul. So if you only plan on doing this “for a few years” or maybe “until you have your baby” then go ahead and tune out. But if this is your career plan you may want to lean in and hold on. We have all had our days that we literally feel like we might break. When there are so many emergencies at work, or when you have something going on at home but still need to show up at the office; when your heart is breaking because there was a tragedy. But how do you get through it? Rephrase. How do you work through it? I don’t mean just showing up at work and working I mean leaning in and dealing with the things that are going on. That is the tricky part because there is no exact formula on how to get through it. But it is a compilation of self care; support; comradery; and self soothing. But here are a few ways to set work life boundaries so that you can continue to show up as the best version of yourself every day and curb compassion fatigue. Take control of what you can.2. Be intentional 3. Plan breaks 4. Build Your Tribe 5. Try to separate work and home. Hello and Welcome to the podcast; Adventures of a New YouWhy do we seek other people’s permission to take care of ourselvesWhy do we need to feel the need to be validated by others that we are doing what is best for us. If you are like me and so many other women you will show up and work no matter how terrible you feel. Whether you are sick or emotionally drained whatever you are going through you will just keep on trucking. Why do we need someone else to validate that we are sick enough to rest? One of the reasons is that we have been programmed to think that resting implies weakness. But does it? No! Resting allows our bodies to heal and grow. Some would say that resting is self care and it is but the other half of your brain is telling you that resting means you are lazy. My brain fights these stories every time that I am sick. But we need to dig into our stories and reframe them! We need to remind ourselves that it is ok to take care of ourselves. It’s time that we start making ourselves a priority and that we take care of ourselves! We need to tune into our bodies and be self aware and allow ourselves to rest! This isn’t just about work and being sick it’s about building in time for rest and rejuvenation in our schedules. It’s about planning ahead and scheduling our lives so that we don’t get to our breaking points before we take that time for ourselves. We need to give ourselves permission to schedule time to take care of yourself We also need to give ourselves permission to set goals and achieve those goals! It’s the new year so we are all walking around with our brand new list of goals but will we actually be brave enough to work towards those goals. Hello and Welcome to the podcast; Adventures of a New YouI am your host, Jen Parke a social worker and fellow adventurer! This is Episode 44 of the podcast and today we are going to chat about: Unsolicited AdviceEarlier this week I was out shopping with my son, celebrating the first day of hunting, the extended Thanksgiving holiday and the great blizzard of 2019. We took the day to get some Christmas shopping done. Throughout the day, several people said things to me the first was while we were at lunch and just a kind reminder that kids grow so fast to enjoy it. Sometimes those reminders are not always well received as they usually come during a moment when we are struggling or flustered with parenting. But I was actually in a really good place to receive this kind reminder. That was actually why we had stopped to have lunch together. We were running errands after errand and racing what was supposed to be a pretty significant storm and I could have kept on trucking but my son specifically asked if we could stop and have lunch together. I could have said let's run through a drive thru and keep going but I was like you know what yes let's have lunch together. I realized as we were having lunch that he needed that. Frankly so did I. But he had some things that he needed to talk to me about. So we spent time talking and enjoying our lunch together instead of just racing through the day. Sometimes we all need to remember this and remember that yes our kids do grow quickly and you know what soon enough they will be busy teenagers and then adults with their own lives so we should slow down and make time to just sit and have lunch with them. The second stranger with unsolicited advice came while we were at TJ Maxx. I was still shopping but making my way to the register and my son was trying to move me along and then I realized already standing in front of a cashier. I have a rule that when we are in a store he can have some independence but I need to be able to see him (really hear him he is a loud child) because the world is crazy and I need to be able to get to him quickly if strangers start talking to him. He is very social we call him the mayor! So as I am still looking I remind my son several times not to rush me. So this ever so kind stranger starts talking to us and tells me that she never fought with her son. I was confused at first because this was by no means fighting. I mean seriously it wasn’t like I was asking him to put his shoes on. For a moment I was like sure whatever lady I’m sure you never fought with your kid. So I started to shrug her off but then she continued and reminded me that moments like this are fleeting and soon enough I will be begging my son to come and visit me. I quickly realized that she wasn’t sharing this advice for my benefit. She was sharing because she needed to talk about this for herself. So I let her keep talking. Somehow we got onto the subject of her being friends with her ex husband and he is a chiropractor and she sees him weekly. Then she asked about me. I shared that I am cordial with my son’s father. She said “Do better”. That hit right there. If you are co parenting even if you are in a relationship I’m certain that there are times that you are not on the same page or you make each other crazy. My parents have been divorced for almost 25 years and they get along great. Some people make it look so easy even though I’m sure that it has not been. It’s not easy and I’m certain that I will catch flack for this but I think that it is important for us to talk about how it is not easy. If you need a place to start I shared a few of my

Hello and Welcome to the podcast; Adventures of a New YouI am your host, Jen Parke a social worker and fellow adventurer! This is Episode 43 of the podcast and today we are going to chat about: Surrounding yourself with encouraging peopleThey say that you are the average of the 5 people that you surround yourself with, google says that Jim Rohn started this concept. So as you go through your day today take a minute and look at the people that you are surrounding yourself with. Do these people exhibit the qualities that you want to have? If they do great! If they don’t know that it is ok to outgrow relationships. I’m not saying that you have to go and break up with the people around you. But it is ok to put a little space in that relationship and seek out new relationships. Sometimes one of the people that you seek out is a mentor. You can do this in person or even without that person even ever knowing that you are following them. That sounds a little creepy but I don’t mean it in a stalker kind of way. I mean in a way that you are learning from them. With social media it is very easy to surround yourself with positive people even when your actual daily life may feel like you are surrounded by negative nancys and debbie downers. I want to share with you some of the incredible women that I follow and try to learn fromBrene BrownHeather ChauvinErin MillerNikki GingrichJen RozenbaumMichelle ObamaRachel HollisKindra HallReece WitherspoonThese are just some of the ladies that I look to for inspiration. I tend to follow working women who are working on their own goals. I also say this you don’t just have to sit back and watch these women, read what they write, listen to their stories but I strongly encourage you to engage with them! I also encourage you to engage with the people that are in your daily life and tell them that you appreciate them! After all it is the day before thanksgiving so we are all trying to be mindful of our gratitude. So go ahead and reach out and tell someone how much you appreciate them today! That’s all for today! Hello and Welcome to the podcast; Adventures of a New YouI am your host, Jen Parke a social worker and fellow adventurer! This is Episode 42 of the podcast and today we are going to chat about: Rest and Nurturing YourselfBare with me during this episode because I know that I sound terrible but I needed to share this reminder! If you have listened to any of the recent episodes then you know that I talk about planning for how you want to feel using energetic time management and that one of the important parts of that is being able to move and shift if you are not feeling how you want to feel. Well something that frequently happens to us is specifically during the holidays is that that we may take on too much. From holiday gatherings to extra errands there is always something to do. The problem is that when we do this we stop listening to ourselves. I am guilty of it too. That’s why I wanted to talk about it today. Over the weekend I was doing all the things. Saturday we traveled for football and my voice started to get scratch and I chalked it up to all of the yelling during the football game. My dad even said something to me as the day went on checking to see if I was feeling ok. I brushed him off but should have at least entertained the idea that I may be coming down with something. Funny how parents never really stop being parents even when you are grown. Then on Sunday I did all the things. Literally I packed the day. Mid afternoon I started feeling really drained but what did i do? Did I listen and rest or even just sit still for five minutes? No you know I didn’t. I kept on moving. Project after project.By Monday morning I was full blown sick and kicking myself for not slowing down! On Monday it was like I hit a wall and there was no option but to rest. My body literally forced me to listen at that point. But why does it have to get that far? Why is it so hard to listen to what our bodies tell us that we need? I received the message loud and clear by Sunday but didn’t listen. Part of the reason is because we have been taught that resting is for the weak, or if you sleep in that you are “wasting the day away”. Those messages are ingrained into our brains. I have made a conscious effort over the past few months to slow down and literally sit down at times. The interesting thing about this is that for me this is not something that I am very good at doing in my own home. That may seem silly or backwards but I think that having the constant reminders surrounding me that there are 7 million things that need to be done makes it much more difficult to actually rest. So if this is something that you also struggle with then find another place to rest! A friend’s home, a park (obviously this is harder now that it is winter) maybe you even just park your car and sit for a few minutes. When my son was younger I would actually go to one of my parents' houses if I needed reinforcements or sometimes just so I could take a nap. Maybe you take a “sick day” for yourself and you still send the kids to school. Maybe you schedule a night each week with no activities and you come home from work and get right into your pjs and you just relax. Maybe you keep a weekend free from activities. Or you schedule time on sundays. All of this comes back to setting boundaries with yourself and with others. Remembering to say no sometimes when your schedule starts to look overloaded. Or remembering that it is ok to cancel an activity if you are not feeling well. You all know that if you tell your friends your sick they want nothing to do

Hello and Welcome to the podcast; Adventures of a New YouI am your host, Jen Parke a social worker and fellow adventurer! Last week I talked about taking care of your physical health and getting your butt to the doctor. Today I want to talk about physically resting. Whether you are struggling with something physically, mentally, cycling or just plain tired listen to your freaking self! Why is it that we can’t just tune in and hear our bodies yelling at us to slow down?Even when someone close to us literally tells us to listen to ourselves and rest it’s a struggle! Why is sitting still so hard? I’ll tell you why because that guilt creeps in and that guilt freaking smothering! Many of us were raised to believe that if we sleep in we are wasting the day away. I know I was. Is that a bad thing? No but we also need to remember to practice self care and sure get up early but get to bed earlier too!I recently read Kate Northrup’s book do less and I know I have talked about this already but that is because my mind is still blown. Ladies I don’t know about you but there is so much that I did not know about cycles. Listen I get it no one likes to talk about their period… I don’t either…. But reading this book gave me so much insight into how cycles work and how we need to pay attention to them! The idea that certain times of the month we can be so much more creative and productive is incredible. If you haven’t read the book I highly suggest it! There is also an app that you can use called my Flo that tells you which phase you are in. And i’m not not just talking about ovulating and all that. Sure that’s good to know for family planning but this is for creative planning and planning for productivity! This is also good for planning when your body needs extra rest! This app uses Kate Northrup’s principles. I will also say that none of this is an ad! I have just learned so much that I wish that I had known so I am sharing it with you! That’s all for today!
