This episode is bona fide! Back in the year 2000, the soundtrack to the Coen Brothers' "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" took the world by storm. We're here to break down the influences and sources of The Soggy Bottom Boys' biggest hit, "I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow," along with every other song they perform in this movie. Those aren't really George Clooney's pipes you hear in the recording, but real-life singer Dan Tyminski is a man of constant praise in the bluegrass community. Did you know he had a Hot 100 hit in 2013? Also, Jacksfilms calls in to dispute the idea that this movie was based on Homer's Odyssey!

The way in which we speak, and the words we use, reflect a great deal about how we perceive ourselves and how we perceive our place in the world. In this unapologetically short episode, Thom invites us to consider whether or not we might be overusing the word sorry in our day-to-day interactions with one another. Considering the connection between sorry and sorrow, the alternatives Thom proposes may be more impactful than you might first think.Episode Highlights[00:45] A Life of Constant Sorrow[02:34] Sarcasm and Narcissism[04:41] You Deserve the Best[06:47] Mea Culpa[08:34] A Willingness to Take Responsibility for What We're ExperiencingUseful Linksinfo@thomknoles.com https://thomknoles.com/https://www.instagram.com/thethomknoleshttps://www.facebook.com/thethomknoleshttps://www.youtube.com/c/thomknoleshttps://thomknoles.com/ask-thom-anything/

The 2024 election was referred to many as the "gender election." We saw breathless stories by the media about Gen Z men, black men, Latino men and others trending towards Donald Trump over Democrat Kamala Harris. Trump's strategy of messaging to men proved effective and he won the election. This also runs parallel to a crisis among men (particularly working class men) around stagnant wages, healthcare, declining qualities of life, isolation and alienation. In our first post-election episode, we talk with journalist Ryan Zickgraf about Trump's appeal to men and what the left can do about it. Today, it's all about Japan's big move into the casino scene, and let's just say, things are about to get wild in Osaka. The Japanese government has finally given the green light to a project that will see the construction of a casino in Osaka by 2029. With a budget of a whopping 13 billion dollars, the stakes are high, and the risks are even higher.Japan is known for its hard-working businessmen who have addictive personalities.Kinky sex, booze, women and now gambling, but seeking help for any kind of addiction is frowned upon. So, with the construction of the new casino, we can expect some big players to be hitting the tables, putting everything on the line. But what will be the cost of this new venture? Will we see a wave of broken marriages, bankruptcies, and kids with absent fathers? And let's not forget about the Yakuza, Japan's notorious criminal organization, who are sure to have their hands in some shady dealings. APEX Express is a weekly magazine-style radio show featuring the voices and stories of Asians and Pacific Islanders from all corners of our community. The show is produced by a collective of media makers, deejays, and activists. Intimate Sounds of the Four Continents Episode #2  Intimate Sounds of the Four Continents combines Lisa Lowe's theories and music from around the world to create intellectually stimulating sonic experience. DJ Miu created this radio show with a mission to spread the message: “Freedom is Yet to Come.” I encourage listeners to take the time to read, write, and resist. We require inoculations that repel the seductions of corporate servitude. Cauleen Smith told us. Starting with reading Lisa Lowe's writing. Reading is Fundamental.  Episode #2 This month's episode features Thao and The Get Down, Stay Down, Star Feminine Band, Taj Majal, and Tohur Aizawa Quartet. Sounds from Cambodia, Benin, Americas, and so much more. With winter coming in the northern hemisphere, I was inspired by music that ponders, wanders, and lingers. A time of reflection of the change from mercury retrograde and the stillness in this Scorpio season and recent Scorpio eclipse and the current mars in retrograde in Gemini. All that to say, reflect on your desires, needs, and goals. Be honest, truly honest about where you are and where you want to be. Send compassion to yourself and those around you. Listen to this set and allow yourself to transmute these energies by meditation and sonic medicine. Star Feminine Band A group of 7 girls, aged between 10 and 17 years old, from Natitingou, a remote town in the north of Benin. I absolutely fell in love with the energy of their music, light and playful and deeply talented. I found their record digging in Pasadena, CA over the summer of 2022. Thao and The Get Down, Stay Down I first heard her and her band in Los Angeles for my auntie's birthday. It was a free concert and that's how my aunt convinced our whole family to go. I was 14 at the time and I didn't really connect to her music at first, my auntie did get an autograph and it was the happiest I've ever seen her.  But then when the pandemic came around, I listened to Thao's tiny desk and it ignited a love for her and her music. I had spent more time learning about folk, rock music so I was able to appreciate it more and understand the depths of her music, especially during March of 2020.   Geraldo Pino  So I found this next track off the Nigeria Soul Power 70 Compilation album. It's got some serious gems on it and this is no exception.  Pino is a Sierra Leonean Nigerian musician. He was one of the early pioneers of modern African pop music. The Charles LLoyd Quartet  This was one of the “First psychedelic jazz bands” and the group was all about “Communication is the prime concern” The quartet is made up of Keith Jarret, Ron McClure, Charles Lloyd, Jack DeJohnnette.  Taj Mahal  Taj Mahal is a Blues musician but fuses Caribbean, Africa, India, Hawaii, and the South Pacific so naturally I had to share some of his music. I found his music crate digging as well as all good music is found by word of mouth or found hidden in a crate.  Henry chose his stage name, Taj Mahal, from dreams he had about Mahatma Gandhi, India, and social tolerance. He started using the stage name in 1959 or 1961—around the same time he began attending the University of Massachusetts. He formed one of the first interracial bands back in 1964 when he moved out to Santa Monica and they released one album together before creative differences. At that time he also worked with Buddy Lee and Muddy Waters. Later in his career, he formed Hula Blues Band in Hawaii.  He will be performing in Oakland if you want to check him out on December 2 and 3 at the fox theater and in Los Angeles on December 4. Tupac Tupac is famously known for his rap music and repping Los Angeles, California. Though he was born in Oakland, CA and wrote an amazing book collection of poetry called “The Rose That Grew From Concrete” that features the very first track “Wake Me When I'm Free” as well as other tales of growing up in the ghetto and his life stories. The rose is a symbol of beauty and love showing resilience in its ability to grow in the face of insurmountable odds, the concrete. Lisa Lowe's Book:  In this uniquely interdisciplinary work, Lisa Lowe examines the relationships between Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas in the late eighteenth- and early nineteenth- centuries, exploring the links between colonialism, slavery, imperial trades and Western liberalism. Are you ready to get real old-timey? This week we discuss the folk and bluegrass revival of O Brother, Where Art Thou? Loosely based on "The Odyssey", Joel and Ethan Coen pulled together an all-star lineup of country musicians to score this wacky road trip through Depression-era Mississippi. The film is a hoot, but the soundtrack was a sensation. The album hit #1 on the charts over a year after its release, and went on to sell 8 million copies. "I Am A Man of Constant Sorrow" and "O Death" won all the awards, but the real standouts on this album come from Allison Krauss, Gillian Welch, The Whites, and more! So join us as we dig deep into the history of American folk music. This episode's an odyssey all on its own! He's been a key part of Alison Krauss & Union Station for 25 years. He's the voice of the most popular and successful bluegrass track of the 21st century in "Man of Constant Sorrow." And he's one of the most admired acoustic musicians all around in his field. Looking for new directions and challenges during a break from AKUS, Dan Tyminski started writing songs with Music Row songwriters he'd never met before. And before long he found a surprising new sound emerging and some thoughts and feelings he'd never thought about putting into music before. The result is a new career under the name Tyminski with a debut album Southern Gothic. It's daring and different and certainly not bluegrass. He says his late mom and dad wouldn't have liked it one bit. But here he is, 50 years old with a bold new direction. Also in the hour, some Time Machine Tape with Alison Krauss herself, talking with Robert Plant in 2007 about the album they'd just finished together, well before it was released and won 6 Grammy Awards.
