We meet southwest Florida resident Marina Berkovich. She's a native of Kiev, Ukraine, who fled the Soviet Union and Communism with her mother at the age of 18. Trained as a CPA, Ms. Berkovich was chief financial officer of a New York City-based hotel and property management company before she began teaming up with her husband Alex Goldstein, a renowned Russian-American cinematic composer, to make documentary films -- many of which help tell the story of Jewish people who made, and make, a positive impact on life in Southwest Florida. Ms. Berkovich is an oral visual history interviewer for the Holocaust Museum of Southwest Florida. She and her husband moved here from New York in 2004, and in 2010 helped found the nonprofit Jewish Historical Society of Southwest Florida, where she remains president. We sit down with her to hear her thoughts on the world today — including Russia's war against Ukraine, and the Hamas attack on Israel and what has unfolded since — as well as the work they do at the Jewish Historical Society of Southwest Florida.
When Covid-19 began tearing across the U.S. in March 2020, Alex Goldstein started posting on Twitter the pictures and stories of people who had died from the disease. Over two years later, as the U.S. marks the grim milestone of 1 million people dead from Covid-19, Goldstein is still at it. The account, @FacesOfCovid, has now memorialized more than 7,000 people.
FacesOfCovid creator Alex Goldstein joins Zerlina to discuss the project and the devastating milestone of 1 million deaths from COVID-19.

Welcome to a special episode in recognition of ONE YEAR of the FACES of COVID project with Alex J. Goldstein. Alex was my guest on November 12, 2021 and on that day there were 242,310 deaths—today 552,073. Alex Goldstein created FacesOfCOVID in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic as a means of lifting up the stories behind the statistics of those lost to COVID and affirming their dignity, and holding our government leaders accountable for our failures to adequately respond to the pandemic. Goldstein is currently CEO of the strategic communications firm 90 West, which he founded in 2016 to better serve companies, organizations, and leaders that are making a positive impact on the world -- with a focus on equity, economic mobility, and the climate crisis. Prior to founding 90 West, Alex served for eight years in numerous key leadership roles with former Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, including as senior advisor and executive director of Governor Patrick’s political committee, as press secretary and spokesman for the Patrick-Murray administration from 2011-2012, and as press secretary on Governor Patrick’s successful 2010 reelection campaign. Most recently, Alex served as the senior communications advisor and spokesman for Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley’s historic and successful campaign for Massachusetts’ 7th Congressional District.

Featured topics: Were PSG wrong to fire Tuchel, Can a trophy-less United season be a success, Is this City's year.

Nearly 320,000 Americans have died from COVID-19. It's a number that can be difficult to wrap one's head around. Imagine losing half of Boston's population, or every resident of Pittsburgh. These statistics can inform us of the scope—but they cannot convey the cost. Among those we've lost are loving parents, children, friends, colleagues and neighbors; teachers who inspired their students; health care workers who exhausted themselves to save others from the virus before contracting it themselves; grandparents and community leaders who died alone; adored siblings taking their last breaths as some of their family members said goodbye over FaceTime. Yet, as the death toll increases, so too does the numbness to the enormity of the pandemic. Reeling from the daily reports of new cases and deaths, Boston-based Alex Goldstein wanted to find a way to honor and memorialize those lost. The victims are, in his eyes, “more than a statistic,” so he created the FacesofCOVID Twitter account (https://twitter.com/facesofCOVID) to remember them as unique people, with names, photos and news reports. In this episode, Goldstein discusses his mission nine months into the pandemic, the responses he's received from the friends and families of the people whose stories have been shared, the role misinformation and divisive politics have played in the coronavirus death rate in America, and how his efforts and commitment to honor the dead will continue. Edited by Jesse Ulrich, with music by Ryan J. Sullivan.
Guest host: PSG superfan Alex Goldstein. This week features the Mosk Minute where Moskowitz rants about how United have not brought in Pochettino yet; recap of this week's UCL games and preview of who could win it all; full analysis of every Premier League fixture this weekend; best bets of matchday 12; lots of United shit talk.

America yesterday lost 2,762 people to COVID-19, per the CDC, bringing the total pandemic toll in the U.S. to 272,525. That's more than the population of Des Moines, Iowa. Or Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Alex Goldstein started the well-known twitter account, Faces of Covid. Faces of Covid features the stories of individuals who have passed away from the coronavirus. With thousands of people dying per day in the United States, Alex decided to put a face to the tragic statistics by sharing personal stories of real people taken by the disease. The result - a beautiful space online where real people are celebrated for the lives they lived rather than the disease that took them. Alex shares his mission with Between Headlines, why it's so important to look at the human toll of the pandemic, how he has connected with families affected by covid across the country and what he's learned from his work about both grief and life. 8/20/20--It's the final day of the all-virtual Democratic National Convention. Joe Biden is officially the Democratic nominee for President, and guests this week join us to discuss the highs and lows. First though, co-host and Politico Massachusetts Playbook author Stephanie Murray gives us the rundown on the U.S. congressional races heating up here in Massachusetts. In the Massachusetts 1st Congressional District where Congressman Richard Neal and Holyoke Mayor Alex Morse debated publicly for the first time this week. Stephanie provides an overview of the accusations swirling around Morse and the College Democrats of Massachusetts. Challenger Robbie Goldstein faces off against incumbent Rep. Stephen Lynch in the 8th, and Congressman Seth Moulton is looking to defend his seat in the 6th district against Jamie Zahlaway Belsito and Angus McQuilken. Wilnelia Rivera, President of Rivera Consulting, Katherine Adam, Vice President of Denterlein, and Alex Goldstein, CEO of Ninety West stopped by The Horse Race to offer their takes on the DNC as well as Democrats' response to the coronavirus crisis and its fallout on individuals' health and finances. Rivera, who co-authored a chapter of the new book "TURNOUT! Mobilizing Voters in an Emergency" with Adam, said Democrats' strategy of targeting centrist voters is a flawed one. "If you actually look at what's been happening since 2016 is that the partisan divide in this country has expanded and what that has done is actually shrunk that middle of independent voters." Goldstein, who is behind the Faces of COVID Twitter account, sharing the stories of those who lost their lives to COVID-19, says it's important candidates show empathy and an understanding of the moment we're living in. "Putting all the specific policy issues aside, 175,000 people are dead in this country because of a mismanaged public policy response to a pandemic."

11/20/19-- If you've heard it once, you've heard it a thousand times. Traffic in Boston is bad. As we've mentioned on the show before, it's so bad, it makes commuters consider quitting their jobs or moving elsewhere. This week, the Boston Globe's Spotlight team published the first two installments of its three-part series on traffic in Massachusetts. Regular host and this-time guest Steve Koczela joins Stephanie and Jennifer to talk about the Globe's findings. Notably, the team of writers and researchers surveyed all 206 state elected officials. A little over half responded, and only 5 reported having transit passes. Presumably, the rest of them are driving. Steve pointed out that in the MassINC Polling Group's years asking folks about transportation, the Globe series reflects what his team's been hearing from surveys and focus groups - sense of alarm and frustration. In MPG's most recent poll, participants were asked whether they believed improvements should be made to the agencies that manage transportation before money is spent, or money should be spent immediately to improve transportation. By a 25-point margin, people prioritize the latter - in Steve's words, "People are done waiting." Boston City Council President Andrea Campbell's two-year term is coming to an end, and she makes an appearance on The Horse Race to reflect on how the Council has changed under her tenure, and what work still lies ahead. Campbell says the most exciting thing she's been able to do as City Council President was to bring the council as an institution through racial equity training. In recent years, she says, the body has proven it can get stuff done and should be taken seriously. "I think people are seeing that this body has incredible power, even if it doesn't formally on paper have a lot of defined power." City Council members have exhibited their powers through the use of ordinances, and currently, Campbell is working on creating an office of Inspector General for the City of Boston through an ordinance. As we mentioned in last week's show, former Massachusetts governor Deval Patrick is running for President. The former executive director of Governor Patrick's political committee, Alex Goldstein, says it'll be an uphill battle for the candidate, given the pre-existing narratives built by the rest of the field. But, Goldstein says, given the current tumultuous political landscape, "I think people are ready to feel good for like ten minutes and to feel like there's a reason to be empathetic and care about your neighbors again. And I don't think there's anybody who I've seen in politics who does a better job of capturing that than Deval Patrick.”
7/31/19-- Today on the podcast, Jenn and Steve unpack a mysterious phone survey facing off Rep. Joe Kennedy III and Sen. Ed Markey. It's unclear who sponsored it, but it does raise questions about if or when Kennedy may run for Senate. And, brace yourselves, but it's come to the hosts' attention that the legislature has not reauthorized horse racing and simulcasting. If no action is taken by tomorrow, the sport will be deemed illegal. We are officially three debates deep into the Democratic primary, and Steve and Jenn are champing at the bit to discuss it the most recent. Joining them is Alex Goldstein, an alumnus of Deval Patrick's gubernatorial campaign and more recently, Ayanna Pressley's congressional campaign. This Dean of Debates lays out his analysis of the verbal joust, pointing out who made smart moves and who...didn't. Finally, the conversation takes a turn for the green as Steve and Jenn welcome the policy & partnerships manager at the Climate Action Business Association, Tim Cronin. Cronin breaks down what legislation is being put forth at the state level to address climate change and answers the question, are we doing enough, quickly enough? Will Massachusetts get its very own Green New Deal?

On today's episode of the InvestFourMore Real Estate Podcast I interview extremely successful real estate agent Alex Goldstein. Alex has also been a real estate investor and what brought into the luxury real estate agent business was losing just about everything he had in the housing crisis. Alex was invested heavily in the Phoenix market before the crash and he saw his holdings drop 50 percent or more in value in a very short period of time. Alex did not give up on real estate, but instead changed his focus from investing to being a real estate agent. He chose to work in the high-end market as an agent because he was familiar with it and comfortable with the clientele. On this show we talk all about how Alex got started, what he does to attract clients, how he is able to impress his clients, and what his future goals are.
