What if the songs artists love the least become the ones fans can't live without? In this episode of the Innovation Storytellers Show, I sit down with Amani Roberts, DJ, professor, author, and creative powerhouse, to explore where real innovation happens in the music industry—beyond technology, beyond distribution, and deep into the creative process itself. Amani takes us behind the scenes of some of the most legendary R&B hits, revealing how experimentation, last-minute decisions, and creative risks have shaped the soundtracks of our lives. From Earth, Wind & Fire collaborating with magician David Copperfield to transform live performances, to Kool & The Gang reinventing their sound to reach #1, we unpack the unexpected ways music evolves. But this conversation goes beyond music. Amani shares lessons on creativity, reinvention, and ownership that apply to any industry—whether you're leading a business, building a brand, or creating something from nothing. We also dive into the business of music today, from the rise of streaming and catalog sales to how artists are navigating a world where music is consumed differently than ever before. If you've ever wondered how collaboration, risk-taking, and even rejection fuel the biggest breakthroughs, not just in music but in innovation at large. This episode is for you.
This week, Loreena spoke with DJ, author, entrepreneur, and music industry expert Amani Roberts to talk about his latest book, Quiet Storm: A Historical & Cultural Analysis of the Power, Passion, and Pain of R&B Groups. For decades, R&B groups like The Temptations, Boyz II Men, TLC, and Destiny's Child ruled the charts—until the mid-2000s, when they suddenly disappeared. Amani breaks down the perfect storm of industry shifts that led to this decline, from the rise of hip-hop to changes in technology and the music business. We also dive into his journey as a DJ, educator, and the community he built on Twitch during the pandemic, his thoughts on where the genre is headed. The dreaded "friend zone"...when you really like someone and they like you too, but they are unsure or too afraid the friendship will change, they "friend zone" you. I mean sometimes they just aren't into you and you are in the "friend zone", LOL! This song may be able to help you out. Or this song may be able to say what you want to say. Amani Roberts, a true hopeless romantic, my guest today, suggested that if you get the girl with this song...it'd be a pretty slick move to play it on your anniversaries too! He's smooth ladies!! I talked to Amani about his song choice "Where Will You Go" by Babyface. Amani can remember being in high school when he hears this song. He can remember her name, his crew, the school dances, and even his childhood bedroom. Amani is a DJ so he was able to recall a lot of popular artists at the time he was in high school. He reminisced about all the different posters and record albums on the ceiling of his, in the attic. Amani loved the B side of this album with all the slow songs. All those songs that make you feel. And now when he hears them he feels, he feels nostalgic. I'm sad to report no additional information about this song on Song Facts. Full Show Notes

Chief Musical Curator of the Amani Experience, a boutique DJ company that caters to corporate clients is the creation of Amani Roberts. Amani is an adjunct professor at California State University and the successful author of “DJs Mean Business: One Night Behind the Turntables Can Spin Your Company's Succes.” Amani is also on Twitch University, where he blends his business savvy and love of music to teach the masses about his passion for creating podcasts and sharing why podcasts are the best way to grow your business. This is the main focus of the Amani Experience, a successful podcast that features all things music, business, and brand growth. Listen to today's episode of the One Big Tip podcast so you can learn more about expanding your business via podcasts.Amani Roberts is the founder of The Amani Experience, a luxury music entertainment company. Since 2008, Amani Roberts has traveled the globe, providing memorable musical experiences for thousands of people at corporate events, weddings, private parties, and video dj'ing. He is a professionally trained DJ and an adjunct professor at California State University. His podcast, the Amani Experience on Twitch University, educates companies and solopreneurs on growth potential. Amani tends to stick to the Twitch platform instead of others due to its broad reach and live streaming capabilities. That's where he hosts game shows and puts up videos of his live DJ events. He also hosts live game shows on Twitch. The live game show is a niche that grew out of the pandemic. Today it is a way for companies relying on zoom for meetings, events, and workshops to break up the time and entertain their team. With most companies using a hybrid model, going live during a workshop or seminar is the sweet spot. Going live enables you to captivate your audience and keep them entertained. Live podcasting also creates unique opportunities for lead generation. Twitch is an excellent platform as it has a global reach and will enable you to connect with people who would otherwise, never hear of your brand. Amani uses podcasts to create three types of lead generation value. The first is getting your audience to the platform you are broadcasting live on and then getting their email address by offering a value prop. This allows you to connect with them daily, weekly or monthly. The second type of lead generation you gain with podcasts is if someone listening to your podcast decides they want to hire you based on the exposure you gained from the live stream. The third type of lead generation is being top of mind. Through podcasting, you stay at the forefront of your audience's mind, so when they need your services, they think of you and your brand. Today, the best way to create brand awareness and increase authority is to use podcasting. By airing your podcast live on a streaming platform, you can reach people around the globe. Not all platforms are created equal. Linkedin, for example, when you post life, it stays on your account. Viewers can always refer back to it. They can re-watch it when it's convenient for them. People try to tune in when you offer a live component to your podcast. It's a way to share your process with your audience. They see that you are authentic, and they can connect with you. Those are the things that drive your brand awareness and give your brand or company authority in your field. Podcasts generate hundreds of pieces of content from a short 20-minute podcast or live stream. Having the ability to repurpose content is a great investment for your business. Using the repurposed content across all platforms creates consistent branding for your company, so your audience will know where to find you and find you easily. “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far go together.” There is no easy way to get what you want in life. Often the path will have many twists and turns. You must scratch and crawl for everything. Solely focused on that ultimate goal. Keep your eye on the Prize. But there is another way. Another path that at first may seem counter-intuitive. Believe it or not, the best way to get what you want is to help others get what they want. Consistently thinking of others and how you can provide benefit to them, will pay huge dividends. But you must be patient. You must be willing to delay immediate gratification for long term success. Long term strategies. It is important to always keep our long-term dreams in mind through the process but making the process about understanding others and what their hopes and dreams are, you can find ways to help them. This outward shift in focus has a reaction we typically fail to understand when we are wrapped up in our own selfish pursuits. This giving perspective has a remarkable effect on those we encounter. Or even the casual observer. As we impact their lives in a meaningful way, we leave a mark. We plant a seed. And over time these seeds bear fruit. Many types of fruit. Some fruit we did not even expect. Amani Roberts has been helping others achieve their dreams and goals for many years. After working his way up the corporate ladder in the hospitality industry, Amani took 2 decades of expertise working at Marriot and his two degrees out to California realizing his dream of becoming a DJ. Honing his craft and earning another degree from Scratch academy, Amani has been rocking out clubs, corporate events, and even the classroom. Your perpetual wingman, Amani not only sets the tone, but he also sets the standard in when it comes to the music business and life lessons. His new book DJ’s Mean Business, Amani walks you through the business cycle like a night at the club. His metaphors and content are both witty and relevant. Spreading this knowledge to his students at Cal State Fullerton, Amani teaches, mentors and practices what he preaches. Learn how this corporate executive, flipped the script, found his gift, and has been sharing it with the world ever since. With even bigger goals on the horizon, hear how he is laying down tracks and knowledge in my recent conversation with Amani Roberts. Imagine an organization filled to the brim with great individual talent. Now imagine that organization has no formal methods for bringing those people together as a team. Likely, many of you don’t have to imagine that at all because that just might be the case at your organization. Well so what? If individuals strive for individual success, how bad can it really be? To answer that question, we talked with a team building expert with an unusual background. Amani Roberts, aka DJ AmRo is a professional DJ and music producer, but he’s also a thought leader. Amani got his DJ chops at the Scratch Academy DJ school, but it wasn’t long before he found a way to adapt his skill set to team-building for corporate America. Amani also hosts his own podcast, the Amani Experience, which explores creative individuals who moved from corporate life to creative life. Just how do team building and DJing fit together? I for one was excited to find out. Finally, we would be delighted if you would be so kind as to take our recruiting practices survey. If you want to take the survey, you can find it here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/XK2B6M2 Upon completing the survey, you will also be given an opportunity to enter a $100 Amazon gift card drawing.
In this episode, I had the pleasure of interviewing world-class DJ, Mr. Amani Roberts (DJ AmRo) about his mission: bringing creativity into the workplace and the way it can improve team culture. The word "culture" gets thrown around a lot these days and most small businesses are ignoring it - at their peril. Creating strong bonds and perpetuating an environment of self improvement will have a more dramatic effect on your business than you can fathom. I've experienced first hand the impact of bosses and managers caring about me enough to understand me as a human, my fears, and my goals.
Amani Roberts strongly believes in that African Proverb...'if you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.' He certainly exemplifies this in how he learns, leads and brings others along. Tune in!More Info: http://www.amaniexperience.com/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
