As our favorite Rock and Roll Ambassador, bass player Jimmy Ashhurst, said in the very first episode, “How do you market classic rock when it's not yet classic?” Billy Alexander, the multi-talented guitarist and a cornerstone of the prog-rock outfit YYNOT, has done time as a sideman to John Waite and Anna Nalick, has produced, written, and recorded numerous artists, and with his nine-song debut solo album, Rock & Roll Diary, steps into the spotlight. In essence, Billy Alexander's work is a masterclass in balancing complexity with accessibility. While we may not have answered the question of how to market classic rock that is not yet classic, it's nice to know there are still acolytes out there writing the tunes and stomping the stages. After racking up countless road miles on tour with his band YYNOT, John Waite and Anna Nalick, producing, writing, and recording for various artists, and having two Billboard charting songs with his band Feel, Billy Alexander is set to deliver his debut solo album Rock & Roll Diary in 2024. The first taste of what's to come is the song and video release for “Hammer Of The Gods”. See the video here: https://youtu.be/NbvD8hr56jc When asked about the song Alexander explains, “Hammer Of The Gods” is a salute to some of the bands of the 70's who went big and bold. Re-shaping rock by allowing their imaginations and musical skills to take them to new places. Not afraid to experiment with new sounds, and arrangements or write more intellectual pieces. Critics of the time often calling them “self-indulgent” while I call it adventurous. His upcoming debut album Rock & Roll Diary is a nine-song-set that covers the full spectrum of rock n' roll genres. “After writing and producing three albums for my band YYNOT and years of writing for other artists, I started writing a batch of songs with no aim or intention other than just to write for myself. The songs were shaping themselves up to be a kind of reflection of my early influences and inspirational bands and artists from my youth and beyond. Some progressive rock and others more classic rock. Hints of Rush, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Tom Petty, The Beatles, and others were creeping into my creative process more and more,” shares Alexander. He continues, “When it came time to start putting the songs together in the studio, I felt even more liberated to just make a record in the spirit of the ones that lit my fire as a young teen and helped shape me as a guitarist, songwriter, and musician. Yet, I didn't just go for an obvious “retro” vibe as I'm still very much into the here and now in terms of current influences and growth in all areas. As much as this record is a celebration of my rock and roll heroes, at its core it's my story. But hopefully a story many others can relate to. My goal was to make a modern-classic Rock and Roll record similar to the ones I love”.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Does anyone have the answer? I don't.As far as I can tell, the first appearance of the streaky star effect (where all the stars blur into lines streaking past the Enterprise when it goes into warp) was in Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan, the second Star Trek movie. Wrath of Khan came out in 1982, five years after Star Wars debuted in 1977. Which means Star Wars did it first, as far as I can tell (someone correct me if I'm wrong). In the opening credits for the Original Series, we definitely get a whooshing noise as the Enterprise zooms through space, but no streaky star effect.
Live from Across the internet, Cherish Alexander a songwriter and musician who has been on the scene for a very long time, and a "RISEN" star over at Kitten Robot Records. She is a graphic designer, musican, and vintage fashion officianado. A mix of the Great Gatsby and Joni Mitchell, meets Alanis Morriset and Anna Nalick for good measure. We had her perform some of her new music live, so that was a first time for both of us. She has a lot of stories behind the music you have all listened to for years. She played in an all female Led Zeppelin Tribute band, and dabbled in work with so many other artists the list will make anyone jealouse. We did the interview in camouflage, and no production, just plain, and raw. "...if we don't tell Hakka's story, then it fundamentally changes the story itself. Treating him only an an antagonist would be anathema to the nature of what Tiger's Eye is trying to do. And it needs to be here not just for those larger themes, but because his journey helps bring resolution to both Miguel's journey and Hrao's journey. And their journey's resolution to his." Here, we start getting into the meat of our final chapters. What it means to go all the way back to the beginning with Hakka, what it means to suddenly flip the script and talk about Tiger's Eye's secret protagonist. And we also start making our way through these defining moments of the young red tiger that would one day become a shaman. About learning the wrong lessons, or just finding your mentor lacking. TRIGGER WARNING: Abbey and Bri talk about the catching of the Golden State Killer. If you are sensitive to such topics, please skip ahead to just past 11 minutes. Welcome to another episode of the On Call Room, where the weather is warm, the bugs are flying, and Spring storms are plentiful. Do not fret listeners you will have many weeks where your hosts Abbey and Bri complain about all the terrible things warm weather brings. Stay tuned! This episode is supposed to be dramatic, but as Abbey states "It is and it isn't". We finally reach the moment where shit blows up with Burke and Cristina. Surprisingly, it is a little anti-climatic and everyone ends up alive. The lead up to this episode is made out to make the viewer believe it is going to be like the bomb episode SPOILER ALERT: it is not even close to pink mist and Anna Nalick's "Breathe". George has gone off the deep end. He is a dick to his Mom, Dad, Callie, Izzie, Cristina...pretty much the whole cast of Grey's Anatomy. We get it George, your Dad is sick but that does not give you the right to run around this hospital sulking and picking fights! Go home. Other important notes: Cristina tells on Burke, Burke shuts a door in Cristina's face, and Derek and Meredith finally have sex. This episode is meant to be drama-town, but is sort of a let down. No one died, Burke and Cristina performed the surgeries beautifully. Now that this story line has wrapped up we can move on to George's mental breakdown...coming soon. People keep saying that Alyse Black’s music sounds like falling in love. That it sounds like acceptance and sensuality and raw vulnerable humanness. With an aching, soul-touching voice, her award-winning songs inspire people to goosebumps and wrap them up in velvet. Alyse recently ran a $31k Kickstarter to fund her long-awaited next album. She just finished recording that self-titled re-debut album with producer, Eric Rosse (Maroon 5, Gavin DeGraw, and Chris Isaak, as well as the breakthrough records of Sara Barielles, Tori Amos, and Anna Nalick), drummer Matt Chamberlain (Fiona Apple, Sarah McLachlan, Dido), and bassist Mark Browne (Patty Griffin, Emmylou Harris, Jewel). Alyse Black started out belting Billie Holiday, Beatles, and Bob Dylan tunes a cappella on the streets of Pike Place Market in Seattle. Since then, she's performed on NPR, recorded a commercial for Target, moved to Austin, won Billboard's Annual Songwriting Contest, had several songs placed in movies and TV shows, and toured the country playing over 700 clubs, theaters, festivals, television shows and radio stations. www.AlyseBlack.com

A vibrant force on the scene, Stephanie Grace is ready to stake her claim in country music with electrifying vocals, genuinely sweet songs, and an exuberantly fresh personality that is mixed with a dose of attitude, charisma and charm. With her roots laid down in Douglassville, Pennsylvania, a small town near Reading and not far from Philadelphia,Stephanie has always been around country music.“Country was literally all I listened to,” remembers Stephanie. “My parents listened to country radio all the time andmy mom used to play Lorrie Morgan in the car on the way to school, and I'd sing along.”Stephanie has always had a passion for singing, even though shyness kept her from singing on stage.“When I was two, I picked up an egg beater and sang into it like it was a microphone,” recalls Stephanie. “When wewould sit in a circle singing songs in kindergarten, I always sang the loudest, but the thought of ever singing in front ofpeople terrified me.”That was until she decided to sing in her first grade talent show. “I surprised the entire school when I got up there tosing. I loved the adrenaline rush I felt on stage and that's when I knew I wanted to do this for the rest of my life.”She continued playing at local restaurants, fairs and carnivals, getting comfortable singing in front of an audience. I was a little frustrated because I really didn't have much to write about. Two years later, school was gettingrough and my grandmother passed away. I decided to give it another try, and the words just started flowing.”Stephanie dreams of inspiring others through lyrics that frame her daily experiences and casual conversations. “I wantsomeone to put my song on, and feel better,” admits Stephanie. “Music has always been there for me, and I want to putsongs out that others can relate to and find comfort in.”Stephanie just released her second EP, “Life's Okay” in November 2013. The first single off the EP was “Loser”, asong that has become an anthem for kids and adults all over the U.S. who have ever been bullied. Listen to the interview here!Tell me a little about yourself and your writing.I grew up in New Jersey and now live in Washington, D.C. I work by day as an editor and researcher, but I write about medieval history: my book Becoming Charlemagne: Europe, Baghdad, and the Empires of A.D. 800 was published by HarperCollins in 2006.2. Tell me about the story that you've created a soundtrack/playlist for. Becoming Charlemagneretells the story of the coronation of Karl, King of the Franks, whom history remembers as Charlemagne. The book is short, almost novelistic in style, and intended for readers who have no prior knowledge of medieval history.Charlemagne's coronation in the year 800 was one of the most important events in European history, but I've tried to put it in context by taking the reader to Rome, Constantinople, and Baghdad. I've also offered glimpses of medieval Jewish communities and the routines of ninth-century peasants.3. What is your playlist? (To get Jeff's playlist all in one convenient place, check out his iMix) William Shatner featuring Joe Jackson, "Common People"When you're holed up in an air-conditioned apartment writing an imaginative re-creation of the difficult lives of medieval peasants, only a force as powerful as William Shatner can keep you from taking yourself too seriously.Fiona Apple, "Criminal"I listened to this creepy song whenever I needed to write about Irene of Byzantium, the ruthless empress who had her own son blinded. Her power-grab and brief diplomatic relations with Charlemagne earned her an entire chapter in my book. Associating her with this song attributes to her a conscience that she probably didn't have in real life.Gogol Bordello, "Start Wearing Purple"This song appears to be about a mail-order bride, but I like to pretend it's about imperial politics. I get a kick out of hearing the band's wild Ukranian singer declaring "I know it all from Diogenes to the Foucault."Neil Finn, "She Will Have Her Way"The lyrics are deeply sad, but the music is sprightly. That contradiction is a nice little lens through which to view medieval history.Thompson Twins, "The Gap"Stop giving me that look. This song was on my mind as I wrote about medieval Baghdad because of its subtle message about globalization, intercultural conflict, and the need for increased East-West cooperation. Not buying it? Then just dance already. Anna Nalick, "Satellite"Although medieval people never had to worry that the star they wished on might turn out to be a man-made object, this pop anthem can, if you let it, evoke images of lonely monks and wistful Carolingian princesses.Audioslave, "Cochise"I have no idea what this song is really about, but it makes me want to go conquer somebody.Toby Lightman, "Angels and Devils"I first heard this one on the short-lived TV show "Wonderfalls." The song is actually about a woman who plans to ambush her cheating lover, but the angel/devil imagery and the singer's relentless sense of purpose reminded me of the conspirators who attacked Pope Leo III on the streets of Rome. That ambush set in motion centuries of history--and the second half of Becoming Charlemagne.Colin Hay, "Overkill"This song has nothing to do with Charlemagne, but it has everything to do with Charlemagne-induced insomnia, especially in its depiction of sleeplessly wandering the streets at night: "Well, at least there's pretty lights..."France Gall, "Sacre Charlemagne"There aren't many pop songs about Charlemagne; I take what I can get. France Gall was cute as a button.James McMurtry, "Charlemagne's Home Town"Although I discovered this one after the book was published, I was impressed that a singer could tie together such diverse subjects as Charlemagne, international travel, and long-distance relationships in a single country song.Jeff Buckley, "Hallelujah"I prefer this more sentimental cover to Leonard Cohen's original. Packed with images of sex, love, history, and religion, this song captures the intense wistfulness of bidding adieu to figures you've "known" for several years as they fade back into history's shadows. If you're looking for an unusual creative challenge, try writing new verses to this song. It takes real effort to rhyme "hallelujah" and not sound completely ridiculous.4. What does music mean to you? To your writing?I rely on music for escapism. Writing is intense, lonely work, all the more so because writing about the Middle Ages pulls my mind far away from the generally amiable world in which I live. I understand why most writers need classical music or instrumentals to get them going, but I need rock and pop music--songs like those on my playlist--to bring me back to my senses.5. What kind of music do you like to write to?I'll often listen to music to get inspired, but I rarely write to music. Strange as it may sound, I write to the noise of television.6. If this story was made into a movie, who would you want to do the soundtrack? If Becoming Charlemagne were made into a decent movie, I'd want the music to be reminiscent of the soundtrack to the HBO series "Rome," in all its moodiness and exoticism. I've often joked that I'd settle for a Sci-Fi Channel original movie, in which case I'd want heavy metal all the way. Any adaptation is bound to be unrecognizable, so it might as well be highly stylized and fun.To learn more about Jeff, visit his website Quid Plura?.Next week, I interview author Susan Higginbotham.
