Sean and Amanda start the show by briefly reacting to the box office performance of ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps' and wondering whether or not superhero movies will ever return to the levels of the MCU golden days (1:39). Then, they bring in Andy Greenwald to discuss Netflix's newest animated success, ‘KPop Demon Hunters,' which they were initially skeptical of but eventually became charmed by, and they hypothesize what makes a big cultural hit in 2025 (4:46). Next, Sean and Amanda unpack the new slasher legacy sequel ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer,' starring Madelyn Cline and Chase Sui Wonders, which they found incredibly condescending. They talk through why they found the script, performances, and kill sequences to be deeply unsuccessful (38:28). Finally, they reflect on what many consider to be the weakest decade of the horror genre and create their 1990s Horror Movie Canon (1:04:59). In the original I Know What You Did Last Summer, some very '90s teenagers are targeted by a killer clad in fisherman's garb and armed with a hook. Nearly 30 years later, a new sequel fires up a very similar plot. The movie includes a new group of young people — including Chase Sui Wonders and Madelyn Cline — and a few key survivors from the first go-'round (Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr.) But does it live up to the legacy of the original?Follow Pop Culture Happy Hour on Letterboxd at letterboxd.com/nprpopcultureLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

This horror sequel was written and directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, is the 4th film in the franchise but is a direct sequel to the 1998 film, “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer”. The film stars Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King, Tyriq Withers & Sarah Pidgeon. Returning to the franchise are original stars Jennifer Love Hewitt & Freddie Prince Jr. In this film, a group of friends are driving to the city for the Fourth of July celebration but on the way, they cause another to swerve off the road and a cliff and then swear to secrecy to never mention what happen. One year later, one of them receives a note stating, “I Know What You Did Last Summer”. The film began planning in 2014 when Mike Flanagan was brought on board for a 4th film that did not tie in to the other films but ultimately left the project when different plans fell through. This film comes after Robinson's failed attempt to get this film as a series in 2021 and began production in 2023.

Chase Sui Wonders has already proven herself a scene-stealing force via titles like Generation and Bodies Bodies Bodies, but 2025 is solidifying her as an undeniable star. In March, she debuted The Studio, an Apple TV+ series in which she stars opposite powerhouses Seth Rogen, Catherine O'Hara, Ike Barinholtz and Kathryn Hahn. Mere days after that show scored a whopping 23 Emmy nominations, Wonders headlines one of the most anticipated movies of the year - the new I Know What You Did Last Summer.Similar to the 1997 original, on July 4, Wonders' Ava and her group of friends go for a drive and stop on the side of the road to watch the fireworks. When one walks into the road, an approaching car swerves to avoid hitting him and veers off the edge of the cliff. Rather than report the incident, the group attempts to sweep it under the rug. And they're confident they've done it until they all regroup next year and come to learn that they're being hunted by a killer who claims, “I know what you did last summer.”With I Know What You Did Last Summer now playing in theaters nationwide, Wonders joined me for a Collider Ladies Night chat to retrace her steps to the film. She looks back on her time studying at Harvard and how booking the role of Riley on HBO Max's Generation wound up being a career game-changer. She also discusses her directing ambitions and what she took from watching Rogen wear multiple hats on the set of The Studio, and then breaks down all the biggest moments of I Know What You Did Last Summer, including sharing scenes with franchise icons Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr., and the movie's third act twists. I saw bodies bodies bodies the other day and it was one of my most anticipated movies of the year! So many people I love Chase Sui Wonders from generation (RIP Fuck discovery+) Amandla Stenberg, Pete Davidson the girl from industry I literally loved it it was so good like I watched it and was just like this is what the next age of movies will look like I loved how important phones were in the film without seeing like it be based around social media with like the overplayed text messages on screen or calls like its displayed on grownish it was just so real I loved the premise the LGBTQ representation and the portrayal from a friendship of girls and like one boy because that looks like my younger friend groups like identical down to the older guy like woah so real and the fighting and sexual tension and history and even the way drugs are involved I love how A24 Does things anyway I didn't think I would make an episode about this because I had nothing to really say until I go on to tiktok and twitter and see this film critic going at Amandla Stenberg and saying that the movie was an advertisement for cleavage or something in those words and that was gross Amandla jokingly snapped back at the critic saying she shouldve foucssed on the movie more and I agree considering I didn't even if notice any of the women cleavage because the movie was so good and thats just not where my brain went? I thought there outfits were very normal for gen z these days and I also think its disgusting that a critic took the route of body shaming someone instead of doing their fucking job and critiquing the film for its plot and filmography instead of wardrobe and body sizes As a bigger woman and a women with big boobs to be honest they are huge its hard to wear things that smaller women can wear easily even the clothes Made from my size display things that I dont always want to be seen I remember when I turned like 15 I would just go out in a bathing suit and people were always commenting on my breasts men and woman like I would post on instagram and snapchat and people would literally say things about them and it was awkward like the conversation “am I showing off my boobs or do I just have big boobs” is so real and annoying and I think its disrespectful to belittle someones crafts to something they cant change about themselves espeically sense you are supposed to be critiquing a film and the first thing you go for is the actor who has is just there to tell a story whether Amandla picked her outfit or not doesn't give you a right to just body shame someone especially in order to not promote a film it just doesn't make sense and its gross and maybe you just suck at your job if you choose to take cheap shots at people and not respect any push back or resppnse when we see you sexualizing soemone for no reason This whole situation makes me think of euphoria for so many reasons the a24 connection the way people dont sexualize the men in euphoria who go naked as much as the women they way Sydney Sweeney gets sexualized and ripped apart from showing her body but most men are shirtless and praised or awarded sexiest men alive its mysogynist and gross and this interviewer should be ashsamed of themselves. I love Amandla stenberg this movie is amazing its funny it plays on how teenagers act this day in age its not scary but its like a who done it type thing all of the actors and actresses had stellar performances and I feel like a lot of people will be able to relate to it. And critics please take your insecurities and judgement of female bodies out of your reviews about media its not needed and its innapropriate. Thanks for lsitening. Go see bodies bodies bodies out in theaters now! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/al4s/message

Bodies Bodies Bodies starts with a fairly standard horror-movie premise: A group of wealthy and attractive pleasure-seekers gather at a mansion to party and ride out an oncoming hurricane. But things get quickly messy when one of them turns up dead. With a cast that includes Amandla Stenberg, Maria Bakalova, Chase Sui Wonders, Myha'la Herrold, Rachel Sennott, Pete Davidson, and Lee Pace, the movie mixes horror, comedy, Gen-Z satire, and a whodunit-style mystery that will keep you guessing.

You may have noticed that The Riley Episode is different from every other episode of Generation. It's intensely focused on Riley's subjectivity, and as her 24 hours without sleep unfurl, you fully descend into her blurred reality. This was the result of deep collaboration between Chase Sui Wonders, who plays Riley, and the writers, including Generation co-creator Zelda Barnz and Sharr White, who co-wrote this episode. These three join hosts Gigi Goode & Whembley Sewell on the fourteenth episode of Generation: The Podcast to share some of the juiciest BTS moments from the season and talk intuitive shooting, self-excavation and how they got that iconic Riley line: “didn't anyone ever tell you not to get in the car with strange girls!?” Plus: how to talk about mental health without talking about mental health, unpacking Megan's successful mothering moment, and of course, Griley analysis with the biggest stan in the game.
