Interview by Kris PetersAt the turn of the last century - around the same time the world was supposed to succumb to the flash in the pan that was the Y2K bug - a group of four Sydney punk reprobates called Frenzal Rhomb were plotting their own assault on the world. But instead of technology, this was a stealth attack by music. After previously making their name as carefree, wreckless, uncompromising punk rockers through albums Coughing Up A Storm, Not So Tough Now and Meet The Family, Frenzal Rhomb elected to go a little more mainstream on their fourth album, A Man's Not A Camel. So much so that the album contained a bona fide ballad - I Miss My Lung, and another on the cusp of being a ballad with You Are Not My Friend.Granted, A Man's Not A Camel provided some staple Frenzal moments with songs like It's Up To You, Do You Wanna Fight Me and the irresistible I Know Why Dinosaurs Became Extinct, and it also contained more than enough lashings of Frenzal humour, but it was also far enough on the right side of the musical ledger to have the song Never Had So Much Fun nominated for an ARIA Award in the Best Pop Release category.I shit you not. Thankfully a singing budgie by the name of Kylie Minogue pipped them at the post, otherwise who knows how far down the rabbit hole Frenzal Rhomb would have gone? And now, 26 years after it first came out, Frenzal Rhomb are celebrating the 25th (ish) Birthday of A Man's Not A Camel with an extensive Australian tour that will see the band travelling to places some of you might not even know exist.HEAVY tracked down Frenzal frontman Jason Whalley to take a trip down memory lane."That record seemed to resonate with people," Whalley nodded, stroking his chin. "It had all those songs on it like Never Had So Much Fun and You Are Not My Friend and I Miss My Lung and all that jazz. There's a lot of songs on there that, let's be honest, weren't very good. But it had a few songs on there that seemed to resonate with people. We are doing this tour where we're celebrating this record, but to be honest, we play all the good songs off that record every time we play anyway. We are pulling out some deep cuts too. I've had to relearn a lot of lyrics. I actually looked up the lyrics on the internet to try and figure out what they were, to try and relearn them."We ask if that means the whole of A Man's Not A Camel album will be played in full on tour."100% not," he countered. "We wouldn't do that to our audience. There's a few songs on there that just have not stood the test of time. I mean, even a week after it was released, we weren't playing them. When you see bands doing their whole album, I'm always like, come on, mate, they weren't all bangers."In the full interview, Jay discussed Frenzal Rhomb's upcoming shows in more detail, revealing the tour will include 25 shows in various locations that were missed during their last tour, allowing the band to reconnect with fans. He expressed enthusiasm for the tour and reflected on the band's evolution in songwriting on A Man's Not A Camel, noting a shift towards a more pop-oriented sound while emphasizing the importance of song quality over tempo. The conversation also covered Frenzal's experiences with the album's reception and their nomination at the ARIA's, where he recalled a memorable performance in hospital attire due to his broken arm. We discussed the album's release in the US under Fat Mike's Fat Wreck Chords, highlighting changes made to the tracklist and the unnecessary suggestion of a name change for the American market, plus more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
Australian icon Tex Perkins takes us through his legendary career, from The Cruel Sea & The Beasts recent works, to wild ARIA award nights, his atrocious habits with vinyl records, reissuing his works on vinyl and lots more. Topics Include: Tex Perkins rehearsing with The Cruel Sea for upcoming gigs. Bringing back "deep cuts" from 30 years ago. Band already prepared the songs before his arrival. Feels like "personal karaoke" returning to old material. Gains fresh perspective on older songs with time. Sometimes writes songs instinctively, not from personal experience. Song "Hard For You" channeled rage he hadn't experienced. Recorded with Kid Congo Powers from Bad Seeds. ARIA Awards incident clarified - didn't stab anyone. Hit someone with a glass at an after-party. Molly Meldrum was present during the altercation. Lived with Jules Normington of Phantom Records. Paid rent by washing Jules' dishes. Had access to Jules' extensive record collection. Especially enjoyed 60s punk and garage rock records. Met John Foy, who was pedantic about record handling. Music scattered across many different record labels. Controls some albums, but not all. Universal owns The Cruel Sea and some Beasts albums. Axeman's Jazz recorded and mixed in six hours. Recent album "Ultimo" recorded differently - basic tracks then laptop. Modern recording allows more experimentation without studio costs. Prefers vinyl album lengths around 18-20 minutes per side. Three Legged Dog being released on three vinyl sides. Spanish reissues were "handshake deals" with unclear accounting. Appreciates unashamedly Australian content in newer bands. Newer bands don't hide their Australian accents. Never experienced censorship of his music. Had releases in different regions without his knowledge. No accounting from Big Time label after bankruptcy. Performed with The Legendary Stardust Cowboy in 1985. "Ledge" known for having "world's worst record" - Paralyzed. Backed Ledge with James Baker, Spencer Jones, Lachlan McLeod. Ledge progressively stripped during his performance. Threw Frisbee paper plates with drawings into the audience. Iva Davies was born and raised in regional Australia, where his early exposure to music set the stage for his remarkable career. Trained as a classical musician, he excelled as an oboist. However, the allure of rock music and the emerging punk and new wave scenes in the 70s inspired him to shift gears. Influenced by artists like David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Brian Eno, Iva began exploring electronic and experimental sounds, which would later define Icehouse's unique style. In 1977, Davies formed Flowers with bassist Keith Welsh, marking the beginning of a significant chapter in Australian music. Originally a covers band, Flowers soon began incorporating original material. Their raw energy and Iva's charismatic stage presence quickly made them a favourite in Sydney's pub rock circuit. The release of their debut album, Icehouse, in 1980, was a game-changer. Featuring tracks like "We Can Get Together" and "Can't Help Myself," the album showcased a blend of new wave, punk, and synth-driven rock. Its success led to an international record deal but a legal conflict over the name Flowers prompted the band to rebrand as Icehouse. As Icehouse, the group became a vehicle for Iva's creative vision. Their 1982 album, Primitive Man, marked a major turning point. The album included the upbeat "Great Southern Land," a song that became an unofficial Australian anthem. The next album, Sidewalk (1984), showcased Davies' maturing songwriting and reflected his growing interest in themes of isolation and urban life. Though less commercially successful than its predecessor, it set the stage for the band's magnum opus, Man of Colours (1987). Man of Colours was Icehouse's most commercially successful album, cementing their place as global stars. Tracks like "Electric Blue," co-written with John Oates of Hall & Oates dominated international charts. The album resonated with fans worldwide. In Australia, Man of Colours became the highest-selling album of 1987 and earned multiple ARIA Awards, including Album of the Year. Iva's passion for technology and experimentation was evident throughout Icehouse's career. He embraced cutting-edge digital synthesizers and recording techniques, creating a sound that was both innovative and timeless. In addition to his work with Icehouse, Iva composed scores for films like Razorback (1984) and collaborated with the Sydney Dance Company on Boxes (1985) and Berlin (1995), blending classical and modern musical elements. Despite lineup changes and shifts in the music industry, Icehouse remained a beloved act. In the 1990s, the band released Code Blue (1990) and Big Wheel (1993), which explored deeper and more personal themes. Although these albums didn't match the commercial heights of earlier works, they reinforced Davies' reputation as a versatile and introspective artist. By the 2000s, Icehouse focused on live performances, reconnecting with fans through nostalgia-fueled tours. Davies also reworked classic tracks for the 2011 album Icehouse: White Heat 30 Hits, which celebrated the band's enduring legacy. Iva Davies and Icehouse have left an indelible mark on Australian music and beyond. Great Southern Land is regularly cited as one of Australia's greatest songs, and Icehouse's albums continue to influence generations of musicians. Davies' fusion of classical training, electronic innovation, and rock sensibility has made him one of Australia's most iconic and enduring musical talents. Today Icehouse remains active, with Iva at the helm, performing to loyal audiences and to new fans. The band are celebrated as pioneers of Australian music and continue to bridge the gap between the past and the future of rock and electronic sounds. Catch Icehouse when they headline the RED HOT SUMMER TOUR starting January 2025. Supported by several other notable Australian bands in Noiseworks, Wolfmother, Eskimo Joe, Baby Aniamls, Killing Heidi and Bachelor Girl - this is sure to be an incredible outdoor music festival.

Kasey Chambers is a living legend. Five number one albums, fourteen ARIA Awards, she is the youngest woman to be inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame. Kasey grew up with music. As a kid she'd travel across the Nullabor with her dad, at the end of each day the family would always gather around the campfire to sing songs. She would go on to play with the family band, but it was her 1999 debut album The Captain that was her breakthrough to a solo career that has been rich and rewarding. That debut turns 25 this year, and to mark the anniversary I dipped into the archives for a Take 5 we captured back in 2019. We were celebrating The Captain back then, and the other musical breakthroughs Kasey had experienced through her life. I loved this chat so much; Kasey is a ray of light with her feet firmly on the ground. THE JEREMIAH SHOW - Featuring Jef Scott! The story of a rock and roll legend. Jef Scott's story is that of LA rock and roll lore...Strap in! Jef's first band was GEISHA. They played the Sunset Strip and toured the U.S.A. After he left GEISHA, Jef formed his own band. After playing a show one night at The Whiskey, he met actor Willie Aames who attended Jef's show. Willie was a teen idol star from the ABC show called EIGHT IS ENOUGH. Willie asked Jef to write songs for an upcoming album he was about to make and their recording sessions ultimately landed Jef to act in the last season of EIGHT IS ENOUGH as Willie's best friend and bandmate. Jef played on Tori Amos' LITTLE EARTHQUAKES, international artists James Reyne( Australia), Paul Hyde (Canada), Gregory Gray (Ireland), The Royal Macadamians, and Olivia Newton-John, to name a few. When Jef wrote songs and recorded James Reyne's album, James invited Jef to be his musical director and put a band together in Australia. Jef moved to Melbourne in late 1987, founded a great band including Andy Cichon (current bass player for Billy Joel), and toured the whole country of Australia for two years. In Australia, Jef formed a band called COMPANY OF STRANGERS. It was and still is one of the most successful albums in Australian history, winning Simon and Jef 3 ARIA Awards. Jef is signed to Sony/Orchard and continues to release new music. He has also written songs for TV shows SONS OF ANARCHY, VAMPIRE DIARIES, BEVERLY HILLS 90210, and MELROSE PLACE For the past 15 years, Jef and his writing partner Cody Marks, have teamed up with Wayne Kramer( MC5) and the organization JAIL GUITAR DOORS, playing concerts at California State prisons. Jef is also the creator and host of the popular podcast featured on Radio Candy Radio, BATWINGS. We had the pleasure of interviewing MAY-A over Zoom video!Australian singer-songwriter, MAY-A, will recently released her new EP, ANALYSIS PARALYSIS.You probably know MAY-A from her collab with Australian electronic superstar Flume, “Say Nothing (Feat. MAY-A).” The EP features focus track, “Guilty Conscience,” and previously released singles “Sweat You Out My System,” “Your Funeral,” “LOLA” and “Something Familiar.” The 7-track project also includes the brand new “Ifyoulikeitlikethat” and “SUPERIOR LIAR,” while showing MAY-A's continued exploration and experimentation with new sounds and experiences.ABOUT MAY-AEP singles “Your Funeral” and “Sweat You Out My System” were both met by global applause upon their release this spring, with PAPER praising the latter track as “anthemic ‘90s-style rock…a heated breakup track, which likens a split to going cold turkey and captures all the anxiety and intensity that implies.” “The new pop/rock-meets-semi-rap track brilliantly recontextualizes the indie-pop stylings fans have grown accustomed to from the Australian phenom,” agreed Billboard. “MAY-A leans all the way in with punchy guitars and blown-out drums. Her lyricism remains top-shelf.” “The self-deprecating ‘Your Funeral' finds (MAY-A) leaning into more alt-pop-based sonics,” declared Ones To Watch, “as she unpacks her relationship habits with satirical lyricism flowing above a driving beat.”The ongoing series of new releases follows an incredibly successful 2022 for MAY-A, which included her ARIA Award-nominated collaboration with Australian electronic superstar Flume, “Say Nothing (Feat. MAY-A),” which reached #12 on Billboard's “Hot Dance/Electronic Songs” chart amidst a storm of high-profile media attention from Billboard, Complex and more. MAY-A joined Flume for performances of “Say Nothing” during show-stopping sets at last year's Coachella and Governors Ball as well as on his sold-out US and Australian headline tours. MAY-A also unveiled her own unique rendition, “Say Nothing (MAY-A's Version),” hailed by NME as “a total tone shift from the duo's original, stripping out the song's driving beat and Flume's electronic elements. Instead, MAY-A opts for hauntingly hazy vocals, acoustic guitar and spacious, lo-fi production, letting the vulnerability of the song's lyrics shine through.”Nominated for Rolling Stone Australia's “Best New Artist” award and hailed by Billboard as “a master class in indie pop,” MAY-A made her extraordinary debut with 2021's acclaimed Don't Kiss Ur Friends. The EP – which received a prestigious ARIA Award nomination for “Breakthrough Artist – Release” in MAY-A's home country of Australia – includes such inventive and self-assured tracks as “Swing Of Things,” “Time I Love To Waste,” “Green,” and “Central Station.“Known as a dynamic and inventive live performer, MAY-A supported 5 Seconds of Summer on their recent Australian headline tour and joined Wallows on the UK/EU leg of their landmark Tell Me That It's Over World Tour, earning praise by DORK as “an artist bringing all their anticipated hype to life.”We want to hear from you! Ben Gillies was a 15 year old drummer when Silverchair became a global sensation. After almost two decades of being a rock star, the band broke up, and Ben began to face his own demons
It's a Test Match between Australia and England. Who will win the Ashes. But the commentary is interrupted by the mysterious and troubling disappearance of one of England's most talented young batters. This young cricketer has walked out of the match and no one knows where he has gone. Or, why. As the cricketer talks to a therapist his story unfolds. The Batter ..... Dan Parr The Dad ..... Ian Conningham The Ex Girlfriend ..... Melissa Vaughan The Bowler ..... Will Kirk The Therapist ..... Tracy Wiles The Test Commentator ..... Jonathan Agnew Written by James Fritz Directed by Tracey Neale Cricket has been part of this young man's life since he was six years old. Growing up in Lancashire he is talented and incredibly ambitious, always proud of the way that he handles pressure. Under the watchful eye of his dad he has risen from school to club to country and finally international level. His mum died when he was seven, so it's always been just him, his dad and cricket. When his first England Test cap is awarded, he takes to international cricket like a duck to water. A high flyer and settled down with a girlfriend who is studying Climate Science. On tour, although older players tell him not to, he googles his own name and constantly reads and watches everything he can about cricket and then this becomes mixed in with climate fears. He begins to read tweets and articles and watch TikTok videos that inflame his worries even more and things begin to get out of control and his ability to play cricket suffers. Then finally, on the biggest stage, something snaps. With millions watching on the television around the world and without saying a word to his teammates, he drives away from the stadium into the Australian outback and ends up locking himself in a wardrobe in a motel in the middle of nowhere. Frightened and alone. As his demons start to overwhelm him, can he find the strength to open the door? As the cricketer talks to a therapist his story unfolds. Cricket has long had a problem with poor mental health. The unique pressures of ‘a team game played by individuals' have led many prominent players to experience substance abuse, anxiety, depression and at times suicide. It involves extreme scrutiny of talent, technique and mental fortitude combined with extended periods away from the comforts of home and family. The batter who is out for nought is left for days or weeks to stew on their failure: on how it has cost their team, their career prospects, their country. Arguably there has never been a harder time to be a professional athlete. The constant scrutiny of social media means that there is no escape from the public glare for young sports men and women. But this is only reflective of the wider crisis in young men's mental health in our society. Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 45. Generations of young men are growing up unable to ask for help, trapped in cycles of anxiety and depression, feeling their own pressure to ‘perform' in a variety of different ways. The Test Batter Can't Breathe is heart-breaking and occasionally terrifying, but hopeful and educational. An honest, unflinching portrayal of a mind under extreme stress that might make those suffering from performance-related anxiety and depression feel a little less alone.
