Episode 81 and Wendi and Dfernando's guest interview is actress, author, writer, producer, and activist Mimi Kennedy.Born in Rochester, NY, Mimi first fell in love with acting as a child in community theater, which would lead her to ignite her acting career on stage opposite TV legend Sid Caesar in Neil Simon's LAST OF THE RED HOT LOVERS along with multi-Emmy Award winner Doris Roberts, who became a friend and mentor.Mimi was active in the NYC theatre scene in the 1970's, cast in plays like Jim Steinman's DAS RHEINGOLD and Andy Warhol's legendary PORK – a role she left due to reasons recounted in her 1996 mid-life memoir TAKEN TO THE STAGE: The Education of an Actress (soon to be released as an audiobook on Audible).  Steinman would become a life-long friend and Warhol, at least in her case, would be proven wrong about his “15 minutes of fame” quote.  In 1976 Mimi made her Broadway debut as one of the Pink Ladies: Jan, in the original Broadway run of the legendary musical GREASE.  She was also a member of the original touring production of THE NATIONAL LAMPOON SHOW.In 1975 Mimi was invited to audition for the original cast (The Not Ready for Prime Time Players) of a brand-new late-night NBC TV sketch comedy-variety series SATURDAY NIGHT (later known as SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE), but Lorne Michaels decided on casting Jane Curtin for that spot.    Her stage career did not end when Hollywood and television came calling shortly after. She has performed the 1-woman play about newspaper advice columnist Ann Landers, THE LADY WITH ALL THE ANSWERS, at both the Pasadena and Cleveland Playhouses. In 2013 she wrote and starred in a 1-woman play about suffragist and abolitionist Matilda Joslyn Gage, MIMI KENNEDY FINDS MATILDA JOSLYN GAGE.For 8 seasons Mimi portrayed the much beloved character, Marjorie, on the hit Chuck Lorre CBS TV sitcom MOM. She garnered a Critics Choice Award nomination for Best Guest Performer in a Comedy Series before becoming a series regular in Season 2.  This was the second pairing of Mimi and Lorre; she played Abby O'Neil on the hit 90's ABC TV sitcom DHARMA & GREG for 5 seasons. Her television debut was on the 1977 NBC TV musical-variety mini-series 3 GIRLS 3, also starring dance legend Debbie  Allen, and Ellen Foley. The New York Times declared it a hit, however it sadly only aired 4 episodes. You can view all 4 episodes on Mimi's YouTube channel. 3 GIRLS 3 was quite an introduction to Hollywood allowing her the opportunity to play opposite Bob Hope, Carl Reiner, Flip Wilson, and Steve Martin (in his prime-time TV debut.) Regular TV sitcom series roles followed throughout the 70's and 80's, most notably as Stockard Channing's sister on the CBS TV sitcom JUST FRIENDS, and  co-starring with comedy legend Peter Cook in THE TWO OF US.  The 1990's started with Mimi in a dramatic role portraying a slightly darker side of the affluent WASP-type she had portrayed on sitcoms previously. As Queen-B Ruth Sloan on HOMEFRONT, she netted another American Television Critics nomination, this time as Best Supporting Actress in a Drama. In the 2000's she recurred as CIA Director and House Minority Leader in HBO's THE BRINK and VEEP, respectively. Upcoming television guest roles in 2022 include Netflix's GRACE & FRANKIE, and the long-running ABC TV sitcom THE GOLDBERGS, as well as a new character on a popular drama series.Mimi's most notable roles on film include: Woody Allen's Oscar winning MIDNIGHT IN PARIS, IN THE LOOP, the Oscar winning ERIN BROCKOVICH, PUMP UP THE VOLUME, MAN IN THE CHAIR, THE FIVE-YEAR ENGAGEMENT, SAVING PARADISE, the recent Tony Hale comedy EAT WHEATIES!, and the upcoming GOING PLACES.The experience of attending and graduating from Smith College during the Vietnam War era (with Julie Nixon as a classmate) exposed Mimi to new ideas and perspectives. The seeds of an activist and world citizen were born.  Nonviolence is her core political principle, learned in weekly classes after 9/11 taught by Rev. James Lawson, whom Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. called “the teacher” for his educating activists in nonviolent theory and practice at the start of the civil rights struggle in the 1960s.  Mimi was the founding Advisory Board Chair of Progressive Democrats of America in 2004 and remains on its National Board in a leadership role on the Election Integrity Team.  Her work in Election Integrity is nationally recognized, from Capitol Hill to LA County; where she served on the Advisory Panel for LA's new paper-ballot voting system.  Her 1-woman play about 19th century suffragist Matilda Joslyn Gage wove the spiritual and political activism of Gage with today's need for reproductive justice and conscious parenting.  She was proud to stand with the MOM cast and producers in donating the show's 2017 Emmy budget to Planned Parenthood.  Mimi and the PDA were instrumental in convincing Bernie Sanders to run in the 2016 Democratic Presidential primary; hosting Sanders' first LA fundraiser in her home. She has also worked with the Office of the Americas against the covert wars in Central America and Artists United to Win Without War.Mimi lives in Los Angeles, CA with her husband of over 40 years, actor, educator, and musician Larry Dilg. They have two grown children, two grandchildren and an adorable dog. Also on Episode 81, Dfernando and Wendi are back and touch on things that occurred during their time off: Dfernando's 57th and Greg Covey's 52nd birthdays; Wendi's gift of a week's worth of Magnolia Bakery Banana Pudding and pizza; Wendi's new article in NEW BEAUTY Magazine, which includes various photos from their first photo shoot together (one which includes Wendi wearing one of Bob Fosse's own bowler hats); and Wendi talks about her time in Vancouver where she filmed the new Disney Plus film PROM PACT. On THE RIPE REPORT, Dfernando talks about the new Netflix cake-baking competition show IS IT CAKE?, hosted by SNL's Mikey Day, and Wendi shares a new discovery: Uncle Tetsu Japanese Cheesecake and shares a ROTTEN: celebrities licking faces on the red carpet at awards shows.  Watch Wendi and Dfernando and their TEAM GENERATION RIPE: Greg Covey, Shelley McLendon and Ponciana Badia on Season 7 Episode 2 of CELEBRITY FAMILY FEUD - now on ABC OnDemand and Hulu and on the GENERATION RIPE website.  Follow us on our Instagram:Wendi McLendon-CoveyDfernando ZarembaGENERATION RIPE... and our guest Mimi Kennedy, her Twitter, her TikTok, her Facebook, and her YouTube Channel. Remember to subscribe to GENERATION RIPEAnd rate & leave us a review by clicking HERE!Visit Dfernando Zaremba's website: dfernandozaremba.com

Dr. Robert Larson replays the sounds of activism against apartheid and American neo-imperial hegemony, through Artists United Against Apartheid's 1985 song, Sun City. Field recordings from South Africa's anti-segregation protests open Sun City, a single, album, and music video released in October 1985. Miles Davies, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, and Run DMC joined fifty Artists United Against Apartheid, a multicultural collective who boycotted performing in the racialised regime. Striking its Sun City casino complex, where capitalistic excess comingled alongside extreme poverty, these artists targeted the homeland seizures at apartheid's core. Their lyrics shine light on how apartheid accelerated British and Dutch colonial methods, and relied upon the United States' neo-imperial international hegemony. Yet Sun City's uniquely anti-West critique also speaks to American understandings of racial solidarity, questioning the role of Western musicians as political activists, fundraisers, and historians of Africa. PRESENTER: Dr. Robert Larson, independent historian and knowledge producer. He received his PhD in history from the Ohio State University in 2019, specialising in the anti-apartheid movement. A foundation of meaningful music was instilled from his parent's record collection of artists like Earth, Wind, & Fire, Stevie Wonder, Chicago, The Delfonics, and naturally The Three Degrees. As a teenager, Ashley organized and performed in high school talent shows. The biggest part of Ashley's life and musical path came when he attended Howard University where he received his Bachelor's Degree in Music. In the studio he has recorded vocals for Chavous, Sarah's Girl, Geneva Renee, Tye Tribbett, Jim Stephens, and Will Downing. In 2016, Ashley has released his debut single “Words.”  Ashley went back to his roots with the recording process of this song. “The song was written and composed by Alysha Ashley and I. She is from Kentucky and while composing this song I wanted to enhance the song with more lush arrangement and vocals, which is what you don't here in the music of today. With an ensemble of the best musicians and vocalists from the Philly area, we recorded the song in the Lab studios with engineer Craig White (formerly of Philadelphia International Records). We also had some additional production assistance from Will Downing which was an honor” Though the song is about being in love it is more about the interaction of a couple in the heat of a discussion. It encourages the listener to watch your “Words” and if you don't have an answer in that moment then it is ok to table it for another time.Ashley's latest single “Don't Throw Our Love Away” reached the #3 spot on the UK Soul Chart!!! To continue on the success of this song a remix, for all you that love house music, is scheduled for release in June. Musician, Artist, and Artist Advocate, Brad Lyons is joining the conversation on Cue To Cue Today!  Today is part is the second half of a two-part conversation.   Brad leaves nothing on the table in this episode opening up about his artistic journey. He also, throw down the gantlet in this episode and challenges every artist and every consumer of art to ask themselves hard questions about the current state of how we consume and acquire art.   In this episode: What constitutes a proper fan Why Artist's need to ask themselves about their own integrity How asking for what you need as an artist and risking offending someone is imperative to your success as an artist How art driven by data feedback is changing artist and the art itself.  Why he believes we need to start buying directly from the artists   Oceanship is the touring and recording musical enterprise of Brad Lyons — presently based in Waterdown, Ontario, Canada. One month into his science degree at University of Waterloo, Brad made the decision to focus on music. He ran an ad in the paper that read Experienced Singer Seeks Band, though he had no formal singing experience. Brad formed the band left Pencey, and five years later signed a record deal with ARISTA/BMG Records USA under then president LA Reid. In 2003, for reasons of artistic divergence, Brad parted company with left Pencey members and formed Oceanship. In 2006 the Oceanship EP was recorded. The self-titled EP, packaged in hand- stamped paper bags (as all Oceanship releases are), did well domestically and internationally resulting in a PBS feature of track All The Kids, an XM Radio Verge award, and an extensive tour of China. KCRW, the Los Angeles radio station famous for its discovery of emerging talent (Coldplay, Jeff Buckley), was quick to feature Oceanship’s track “Don’t Wear Me Out” on their “Morning Becomes Eclectic” program as Today’s Top Tune. Hotblack, another track from the album, went to #1 on commercial radio in Birmingham, Alabama, and its video was nominated for Best Music Video by The World Animation Film Festival alongside Coldplay. Multiple tracks from the Oceanship debut album have been placed in international TV shows such as One Tree Hill, Army Wives, The Border, Degrassi TGN, Rookie Blue, among others – fourteen TV shows and movies to date. In 2018 Brad released Bella Blue, the follow-up to his self titled album. While music is best listened to rather than described — especially by the artist — David Gordon, the former Warner A&R who signed some of the all-time music greats, including Prince, Dire Straits, and Van Halen, has this to say about it: "Bella Blue stacks up favorably with my all-time favorite CD (and that musician) — on all scores. Oceanship has a tough of the brilliant... the frequent use of the child's choir, a cappella no less, that bespeaks innocence and mirrors the songs on a meta-level; the crystalline brilliance of lines such as, 'She said: Time is a wave, and it's drowning us', and more, so much more. Bella Blue is a keeper. I am wowed.   Artists United The problem with arts advocacy is two-fold. One, it involves few artists. The very party whose name is on the marquee has neglected to participate. Two, of the artists who are participating, essentially none are speaking about the core of the crisis — the shallow ethics of the average fan and the average artist. The artist is the primary. Artists make art, and the fan and arts industry emerge from that art. In order to turn the tide of the arts movement, we must turn the primary. We must recruit a sufficient number of deeper artists under a common banner — a banner of depth. Artists United proposes to turn the primary by teaching them, or reconnecting them to, a deeper understanding of artist, including their roles and responsibilities. We propose to do this through a series of artistic live presentations and filmed vignettes to be aired online. Artists United is an organization dedicated to teaching and promoting a new dimension of art and artist in an attempt to solve problems within the arts ecosystem and accelerate emerging consciousness. Artists United explores the full artist. We go beyond the artist as simply a maker of artifacts. We strive to connect the artist to their core in a way that brings their purpose into brilliant definition.   Connect with Oceanship! Musician, Artist, and Artist Advocate, Brad Lyons is joining the conversation on Cue To Cue Today! Brad leaves nothing on the table in this episode opening up about his artistic journey. He also, throw down the gantlet in this episode and challenges every artist and every consumer of art to ask themselves hard questions about the current state of how we consume and acquire art. Stay tuned for part two next week!! In this episode: The root cause of all artist’s challenges What he learned in the process of being signed by music, producer L.A. Reid How asking for what you need as an artist and risking offending someone is imperative to your success as an artist How art driven by data feedback is changing artist and the art itself.  How to know if you are an artist who has integrity or not   Oceanship is the touring and recording musical enterprise of Brad Lyons — presently based in Waterdown, Ontario, Canada. Cynthia Whitcomb, a successful screenwriter, has sold over 70 screenplays, 30 of which have been produced on national television and . . . also admits to receiving “help” from the beyond. Award winning composer, Steven Chesne, just released his latest album, Sapient which is being called a “landmark recording” by music reviewers. Listen as we talk creating fusion from sacred traditions, musical counterpoint (aka “mash ups”) and monks walking through the streets of Santa Monica. For more than a year, Steven Chesne unearthed the ancient words of peace from Buddha, Lao Tzu, Jesus, Mohammed, the Sikhs, the Hindu, the Jews, the Cheyenne, the Kikuyu, and the Baha’i. Chesne consciously focused on discovering the similarities of themes and shared beliefs, instead of the differences. This special episode includes moving musical selections from the culminating album, Sapient.
