Four drummers talking about jazz music and jazz drumming, unscripted and improvised. Vosbein is joined by artist/educators Adam Nussbaum, Ed Soph, and Harold Jones as they examine the work of Grady Tate and Joe Chambers.
TRACKS 1-Blues For D.P. (Ron Carter) 2-Just Enough (Herbie Hancock) 3-French Connections (Igor Butman) 4-Something Borrowed, Something Blue (Tommy Flanagan) 5-Lullaby For Shana Bly (Grover Washington Jr.) 6-Stolen Moments (Oliver Nelson) 7-In a Sentimental Mood (Duke Ellington, Manny Kurtz, Irving Mills) 8-Stella by Starlight (Victor Young, Ned Washington) CREDITS Grover Washington Jr. – soprano saxophone (1, 6, 8), tenor saxophone (2–5), alto saxophone (7) Igor Butman – tenor saxophone (3, 6, 8) Herbie Hancock – grand piano (1, 2, 5) James "Sid" Simmons – grand piano (3, 6, 8) Tommy Flanagan – grand piano (4, 7) Richard Lee Steacker – guitars (3, 6) Ron Carter – double bass (1, 2, 5) Gerald Veasley – 5-string electric bass (3, 6, 8) Grady Tate – drums (1) Marvin "Smitty" Smith – drums (1, 2, 5) Darryl Washington – drums (3, 6, 8) Miguel Fuentes – percussion (3, 6, 8)
Playlist Track Time Start Time Opening and Introduction (Thom Holmes) 11:57 00:00 1. Herbie Hancock, Herbie Hancock Demonstrates The Rhodes Piano (1973 Rhodes). A terrific flexi-disc produced by Rhodes and narrated by Hancock who tells an interesting story about his first encounter with the instrument on a Miles Davis session and then he walks the keyboard through a series of effects. He speaks with the authority of a proud electronics tinkerer who understands the nuances that make this instrument so beloved by jazz musicians. This flexi-disc was originally delivered in the November 8, 1973 issue of Down Beat magazine. I provide both sides of the disc, in entirety. Tunes included during the demonstration include parts of Watermelon Man, Maiden Voyage, and The Spook. Soloist, Rhodes Electric Piano, Voice, Herbie Hancock. I thought it would be wisest to lead off this podcast with an overview of the Rhodes even though it is out of chronological sequence, being from 1973. We then go back a few years to hear tracks in proper time order. 12:48 11:57 2. The Don Ellis Orchestra, “Open Beauty” from Electric Bath (1967 Columbia). See the opening tracks from this podcast for a story about this session from Hancock. Bass, Ron Carter; Drums, Tony Williams; Piano, Fender Electric Piano, Herbie Hancock; Tenor Saxophone, Wayne Shorter; Trumpet, Miles Davis. 16:59 30:14 4. Oliver Nelson and Steve Allen, “Go Fly a Kite” from Soulful Brass (1968 Impulse). Another Steve Allen record, whom we heard from in part 1 playing the Wurlitzer Electric Piano. Here is a selection from an album on which he plays the Rock-Si-Chord and occasional piano. Arranged by Oliver Nelson; Rock-Si-Chord, piano, Steve Allen; Drums, Jimmy Gordon; session musicians, Barney Kessel, Bobby Bryant, Larry Bunker, Roger Kellaway, Tom Scott; Produced by Bob Thiele. 2:30 51:24 6. J & K “Mojave” from Betwixt & Between (1969 A&M, CTI). “J” is J.J. Johnson (trombonist) and “K” is Kai Winding (trombonist). Their ensemble included Roger Kellaway playing the electric clavinette. An example of using the clavinet in jazz. This was most likely a Hohner Clavinet Model C which had just been introduced in 1968. Recorded at Van Gelder Studios during late 1968. 2:31 53:54 7. Albert Ayler, “New Generation” from New Grass (1969 Impulse). Liner notes were written by Harold Rhodes, inventor of the Rhodes Electric Piano. 5:42 1:01:24 9. Sun Ra And His Intergalactic Research Arkestra, “Black Forest Myth” from It's After The End Of The World - Live At The Donaueschingen And Berlin Festivals (1971 MPS Records). Recorded at Ballon Theater, Cairo, Egypt December 17, 1971. Sun Ra playing several electronic keyboards in turn, the organ, Minimoog, and Rock-si-Chord. The great jazz funk flutist Bobbi Humphrey released a series of albums around this time that often-featured fantastic synthesizer players. We celebrate his rich legacy with a few of those who worked with him and knew him best. Nicolas King was among the guests to appear. An immensely talented musician, Renzi was influenced in his early years as a pianist by Bill Evans. After living and working in and around Providence, he graduated from the Boston Conservatory of Music in 1973 and Berklee College Of Music the following year. During these years of study he worked with local bands and as accompanist to visiting artists. Among these was Sylvia Sims and it was as a direct result of this engagement that he was hired to work with Mel Tormé. In 1976 he moved to New York City and from the late 70s onwards through the next two decades and into the early years of the twenty-first century, he appeared on scores of albums, sometimes only as pianist but most often also as arranger. Renzi also plays keyboards and occasionally guitar. Developing his own, hard bop style, Renzi also became a much sought after arranger. As a brief listing of the numerous artists with whom he has worked will show, many of them are singers with whom he established a special rapport, and in some cases has acted as musical director: Ruth Brown, Laverne Butler, Ann Hampton Callaway, Diahann Carroll, Freddy Cole, Cynthia Crane, Meredith D'Ambrosio, Blossom Dearie, Scott Hamilton, Lena Horne, Etta Jones, Jack Jones, Eartha Kitt, Steve LaSpina, Cleo Laine, Peggy Lee, Jay Leonhart, Gloria Lynne, Maureen McGovern, Liza Minnelli, Gerry Mulligan, Mark Murphy, Houston Person, John Pizzarelli, Annie Ross, George Shearing, an eight-week tour with Frank Sinatra, Carol Sloane, Grady Tate.

Ashley Scott is a talented vocalist from Philadelphia, PA. He began singing and discovering music at the tender age of 3 from listening and watching is aunt Helen Scott of The Three Degrees. A foundation of meaningful music was instilled from his parent's record collection of artists like Earth, Wind, & Fire, Stevie Wonder, Chicago, The Delfonics, and naturally The Three Degrees. As a teenager, Ashley organized and performed in high school talent shows. The biggest part of Ashley's life and musical path came when he attended Howard University where he received his Bachelor's Degree in Music. At Howard University Ashley studied jazz voice under legendary jazz drummer and vocalist Grady Tate and the late Webster Lewis. Ashley also joined the Howard University Gospel Choir, which has produced R&B artist Angela Winbush, Tawatha Agee of Mtume, Pure Soul, and Gospel great Richard Smallwood. In the studio he has recorded vocals for Chavous, Sarah's Girl, Geneva Renee, Tye Tribbett, Jim Stephens, and Will Downing. In 2016, Ashley has released his debut single “Words.” Ashley went back to his roots with the recording process of this song. “The song was written and composed by Alysha Ashley and I. She is from Kentucky and while composing this song I wanted to enhance the song with more lush arrangement and vocals, which is what you don't here in the music of today. With an ensemble of the best musicians and vocalists from the Philly area, we recorded the song in the Lab studios with engineer Craig White (formerly of Philadelphia International Records). We also had some additional production assistance from Will Downing which was an honor” Though the song is about being in love it is more about the interaction of a couple in the heat of a discussion. It encourages the listener to watch your “Words” and if you don't have an answer in that moment then it is ok to table it for another time.Ashley's latest single “Don't Throw Our Love Away” reached the #3 spot on the UK Soul Chart!!! To continue on the success of this song a remix, for all you that love house music, is scheduled for release in June. I can't wait!!I have known Ashley for some time now; and he is one of the coolest, honest, and genuine artists I know. Tune in to hear is journey! Mr. Isles has worked most often as a side musician for artists across hip-hop, jazz and R&B, and his own record manages to throw it all together — making room along the way for a few guest singers and rappers — while keeping a firm center. The guitarist David Gilmore ran snaky improvisations around them, leading your ear gently astray until the rhythm section dropped decisively into a thrashing rock beat. Mr. Isles and the soprano saxophonist Ian Young played in wet blasts of harmony, and Mr. Isles drove headlong into a rugged solo. He pushed hard, leaning into the song’s screwball-fusion vibe but maintaining a measured sense of swing. Midway through the set, the rapper Elzhi — a onetime member of Slum Village, and a guest on the album — guested on two songs, and the band switched comfortably to a radiant, festive mode. Then the vocalist Alita Moses came on to sing “Find Your Light,” a standout from “Eclectic Excursions,” with a strong redolence of Esperanza Spalding’s dreamy neo-soul side. Over a mid-tempo groove, Ms. Moses sang the song’s lyrics of invitation with acrobatic poise, moving deliberately at cloud altitude. Mr. Isles responded with a solo of sharp bursts and grounded rumbles, filling some of the vertical space in the atmosphere below her. Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Dennis Mckee of The Mckee BrothersThe roots of the McKee Bros. project go back to 70s Ann Arbor and Detroit, where Ralph McKee, inspired by his college roommate, guitarist Bob Doezema (now a Berklee professor who tours with Al Kooper), bought a cheap bass and a Silvertone amp and started to teach himself to play. After a couple of years of jamming with guitarist Grant Cherry and bongo player Pat “Doc” Roberts, Ralph began to play professionally with the eclectic All Directions band, playing funk, jazz, blues, fusion and rock in local clubs and occasionally backing touring artists, including the Drifters and jazz drummer/vocalist Grady Tate. Ralph and Doc picked out a set of bongos for Denis (11 years younger), who then also picked up alto sax in school band. I have known Brevan now for Decades, and have always been impressed by his tremendous talent...There is no doubt he was born to be a great musician...Born in New York City in 1985, Brevan was born instantly a member of a high-level musical family; his father Ivan, who has toured with Luther Vandross, Vanessa Williams, Jennifer Lopez, Roberta Flack, Grady Tate, and Ashford & Simpson, and his mother Brenda, who has performed on Broadway, with Dizzy Gillespie, Angie Bofill, Marian Anderson, and Jazzmobile. After moving to Durham, NC in 1988, Brevan began showing signs of talent in music from age 7. He began playing percussion in church with his mother and brother at age 9. Soon after, he began playing pick up gigs and at other churches in the Raleigh/Durham area. His older brother Brian moved to North Carolina when Brevan was 9, and introduced him to the world of Latin and World Percussion. Brevan learned how to read music in middle school, playing in concert band and jazz band, and participated in the marching band. Brevan has studied many greats throughout his life, folks like Ray Barretto, Mongo Santamaria, Carlos, Tito Puente,. We are also pleased to have on the show Lucius Barre...Barre specializes in promoting international distribution for films from many cultures.

The Major Scale gets into a sentimental mood as we weave together the melodic with a sense of the melancholic, looking back at the legacies of a trio of musical greats. The wild and dark life of Chet Baker gets some reflection as we ponder his music and his mysterious demise that happened one fateful night over 30 years ago in Amsterdam. Next is Grady Tate, prolific drummer and an elegant soul singer. Countless are his sessions, eternal is his talent, and immortal the music he left us. Lastly is Bob Dorough, one of the most idiosyncratic voices to grace the field of music – be it with his own work, with Miles Davis, interpreting Charlie Parker, or making School House Rock.
This week on The Children's Hour, we learn how elections work with Bernalillo County Clerk Linda Stover who explains the whole process. Also, what happens when three field reporters head into the Rio Grande Community Farm corn maze? They get lost! With music by Dana Lyons, Elizabeth Mitchell, Peter Lenton and Friends, Raffi, The Citizens' Band, Grady Tate, Big Bird, and The Handsome Family.
In today's VINYL VIBRATIONS podcast, I continue to tour early vinyl records that showcase JAZZ GUITARIST GREAT WES MONTGOMERY. The recording presented in this podcast are a compilation from my own LP collection - - from the golden age of vinyl. I heard these Montgomery Brothers LPs during my childhood. These records were a frequent play on my parent’s Hi-Fi record player – you could stack up to 10 records, and Wes Montgomery was a regular in that record stack.Today, I will pick more of Wes Montgomerys best recordings, made between 1961 and 1968, In those years Wes would have been between the ages of 38 and 45. Love For Sale (Cole Porter 1930 ) Rec Oct 9, 1961, Buddy Montgomery vibes, George Shearing piano, Monk Montgomery electric bass, Walter Perkins drums, WES and FRIENDS, Milestone 1973 remaster 3:32 from the musical The New Yorkers The song is written from the viewpoint of a prostitute advertising various kinds of "love for sale": "Old love, new love, every love but true love". No Hard Feelings (Buddy Montgomery) Rec Oct 9, 1961, Buddy Montgomery vibes, George Shearing piano, Monk Montgomery electric bass, Walter Perkins drums, WES and FRIENDS, Milestone 1973 remaster 3:45 Born To Be Blue (Mel Torme) Rec Apr 22 1963 Wes Montgomery guitar, Mel Rhyne organ Jimmy Cobb drums The Alternative Wes Montgomery Milestone Records 1963 Produced Orrin Keepnews 7:23 I can hear contemporary Pat Martino through this Wes Montgomery guitar part. Fried Pies (Wes Montgomery) Rec Apr 22 1963 Wes Montgomery guitar, Mel Rhyne organ Jimmy Cobb drums The Alternative Wes Montgomery Milestone Records 1963 Produced Orrin Keepnews 6:34 awesome thumb pluck technique half way into song Besame Mucho take 2 (Consuelo Velazquez 1940) Rec Apr 22 1963 Mel Rhyne organ Jimmy Cobb drums The Alternative Wes Montgomery Milestone Records 1963 Produced Orrin Keepnews 6:24 An exceptional improviser the likes of Joe Pass guitar and Oscar Peterson piano improvisation. The content is massive, each listen draws out another impressive sound. The story goes that WM was often not satisfied with his recordings. That;s’s nothing unusual for a god musician. Sure there are musicians that sit once and nail the take. Peter Keepnews was WM’s producer during the Riverside Records years. These tracks are WM’s rejects, and they sound so very good. This song used in the 1987 Brazilian film Besame Mucho. I’ll Be Back, (Lennon-McCartney) Recorded May 7, 1968, “Road Song”, A&M Records, 2:30 Herbie Hancock piano, Richard Davis Bass, Grady Tate drums, and a cast of many in the orchestra.goes back and forth from major to minor. Road Song (Wes Montgomery) rec May 8,1968 “Road Song”, A&M Records, 3:50 Herbie Hancock Piano , Richard Davis Bass, Ed Shaughnessy drumsalso flute oboe recorder bassoon trumpet clarinet trombone french horn violin viola cello harpsicord and percussion parts..,. final recording before his death on June 15, 1968. A lot of Octave playing in this song. First let’s recap what we learned about Wes in Part 1 He was born in 1923 in Indianapolis INDIANA, Wes has two musician brothers - Monk Montgomery on bass and Buddy Montgomery on piano and vibes They recorded as the Montgomery Brothers in the 1950s Wes recorded with Pacific Jazz in the 1950s and then Riverside Records 1959-1963, and also VERVE and A&M records from 1964 to 1968 The music style, it is jazz guitar, bebop An Original technique: Wes ‘plucks’ the guitar string with his thumb – not a guitar pick Guitar solos used three-tier approach: 1 single notes 2 octave notes 3 block chord melodies That octave string sound became known as “THE NAPTOWN SOUND” , naptown being Indianapolis Wes was a self-taught musician !! He learned Charlie Christian songs note-for-note by listening to records, Lionel Hampton hired Wes for that reason, Wes then toured for 1-1/2 years with Lionel He preferred to play in a jazz trio, quartet or quintet format,

This mix is both a celebration of my debut album "Freshman 15" (you'll hear about half the album here!), and a recreation of my live shows. It's actually the first time I've ever shared things like the live version of "Ariana Grande", or my Big Sean and Grady Tate edits, or "Uptown Lip Gloss" online. This is a recording which combines the incredible talents of J.J.Johnson, trombone master and his composing and arranging abilities. Mr. Johnson said at the time of this recording done in 1964 that it was his best and everything he wanted to do up to that time. He is in magnificent form on his trombone and he was able to assemble two orchestras for these dates. The first is a 17 piece band which performs three pieces and the rest is an 11 piece band doing the rest of the titles. Mr Johnson composed only one piece here called "El Camino Real" but he arranged 6 great Jazz standards. He generously gave Gary McFarland two compositions and arrangements. Johnson arranged Oliver Nelson's "Stolen Moments" and Tom McIntosh arranged and composed two selections. The orchestras contain the cream of the crop of New York based Jazz/studio players....names like Clark Terry and Thad Jones, Oliver Nelson and Jerry Dodgion and a great rhythm section with Hank Jones on piano, Bob Cranshaw on bass and Grady Tate on drums is hard to beat. J.J.! is a fine complete portrait of one of the premier Jazz musicians of the last century. J.J.....indeed!
Oliver Nelson was a musical 'man for all seasons': a great saxophonist who played alto, tenor, and soprano saxophones as well as clarinet and flute. Nelson was a composer and arranger who had his own style and sound and was at his best playing with a large band of his favourite players. Some of them are here on this recording done with New York and Chicago players, people like Chicago born trumpet star Art Hoyle and tenor saxophonist Kenny Soderblom plus New Yorkers like Phil Woods on alto saxophone and Jerome Richardson on baritone saxophone and flute. Seattle born pianist Patti Bown is heard to good advantage here as well as the great rhythm section of bassist Ben Tucker and drummer Grady Tate. Mr. Nelson plays some inspired solos on the tenor saxophone as well but first and foremost are his compositions and arrangements.......all adding up to "Fantabulous!"
