Intro- Where do Queens? Where do Queens do what they do? Where do they collaborate? Where their heart is lit up Queens make their space feel homey, no matter where the space is Warm, loving energy in the environment should match the energy inside Where do Queens heal? In intimate community with someone else Where do Queens express themselves? Everywhere. The minute you start stifling your expression, your voice, you’re dimming your light. Where do Queens learn? In every aspect of our lives Seek out people to teach us who are further along than we are Again, community Where do Queens create? You’re always creating. The moment that you pick up the brush, or the pen, or the camera, then you’re expressing. But you’re always creating Live life like a sustainable farmer: rotate your fields. It saves the soil. Sometimes, a field needs to be burned and left for a while, so the soil can regenerate. So much is happening underneath the soil when it seems to just be dead When it’s ready, new seeds can be planted for harvest Let yourself die. Because the transformation is radical. Every time. Kara Ladd interview How has being a survivor of cancer impacted your life now, a few years out of treatment? COVID-19 diagnosis triggered the same parallels in Kara’s life when she was in cancer treatment Pre-cancer and post-cancer person Life is a repetition of the same themes so that we can learn each intricate layer What has your physical journey translated to in terms of your relationships? The relationship with myself changed the most I thought I knew myself pre-cancer and pre-trauma, but I realized that I was confined to a mold I created as a 13 year old. And the trauma forced me to embrace self-love and self-care on a whole new level. That then impacted every other relationship I had Shaped her health and spirituality and way of being You don’t have to go through trauma to have a profound shift in consciousness Find the miracle of just being in this human body The minutiae of life IS life How has living in STL and NY shaped your understanding of Queendom? Grounded and independent What does conscious dating look like as a nomad? Dating apps became a numbing tool. Once that was clear, she got off of them Strong sense of embodied love has catapulted her view of love Manifestation lists bring clarity about what and who you want Spiritual, conscious focus is at the top of the list What was the trigger that catapulted your career so quickly? Used to be so focused on forcing things to happen, now I allow them to flow Really getting comfortable in the empty space allowed others to be attracted in who could help me move forward Taking a step back from “optimizing” and just listen to what my body feels and needs Alisa Vitti, “In the Flow” How to cycle your life with your body Magic and power come from rest Business cycle with the moon and with your hormonal cycle POWR Plan (follicular phase) Open Up (Ovulation) Work (Luteal) Rest (Menstrual) What seeds do you want to plant with our audience to “Grow the Queendom?” Listen “Hector and The Search for Happiness”- listening is loving. It is an act of love. Q&A : Why should I avoid coffee? https://www.floliving.com/3-reasons-why-women-cant-drink-coffee/ Caffeine causes cyst formation in the breast and ovaries Cafffeine is broken down by the enzyme CYP1A2 90% of the population only make a little bit of this enzyme, and can’t break down caffeine well. Caffeine increases infertility rates 3 cups of coffee a day consumed by women or men increases the risk of miscarraige by 74% Caffeine depletes the body of micronutrients that are essential for hormone balance What do I use to replace coffee? Dandelion root, my favorite brand is “Dandy Blend.” Send in your questions: queen@growthequeendom.com; IG and FB- @queendom.come.podcast Online video coaching with me through BEAM+Flow “Embodied Flow Sessions” (bodywork, feelings, hormone balancing, creative coaching)- beaming@beamandflow.com IG and FB: @beam.and.flow or @chloecofresi Moment of Flow “Burning Lights” by Chloé Cofresí I have sailed across time to find you I live in you The flower that grows The seed never knew Time warps the story Changes the players Cuts and punches Collapsed in the corner On the bed In my life Breath comes in And I’m more than a player The view is worth the time Breathe now She shadows me in Wisdom And I am lit I walk with Time Make myself the honey trap No one is gonna tell What’s mine to show I stand on a cracking city block But I feel Mi Tierra under my feet The salt from food trucks Is El Mar in my nose That’s not a train racing by It’s El Viento ripping through trees The view is worth the time Breathe now She shadows me in Wisdom And I am lit I cross this ocean Flooded by their stories I’ve sailed across time Chased it, cursed it, mastered it Know Her Secret? Time is always and now Keep breathing, see all of now Stop breathing, see always The view is worth the time Breathe now She shadows me in Wisdom And I am lit
INTRO How do Queens...? How do I move through my day, how do I live in a state of flow? How do Queens stay healthy? Eat and live and plan my days around my hormonal cycle Live according to Infradrian Rhythm (longer than 24 hour Circadian rhythm; 28 days) Every week we need diff foods, diff types of sex, diff types of working out Eat whole foods, a variety of them What you can’t get from a whole food diet, get from high quality supplements Essential Oils (Young Living- organic, therapeutic grade, highest quality, pure essential oils) Alissa Vitti- Woman Code; In the Flow How do queens live vibrantly? Partly by staying healthy Stay connected to your flow You will not be the same person this week that you were last week Let yourself shine by flowing and being present in each moment, even through the pain How do queens engage their power You need to KNOW you have power You are a superhero! And you have superpowers at your disposal You have to KNOW it before you can ENGAGE it Engage it: tell yourself you’re powerful in the mirror, write it down, dance, be a bad bitch, put on something that makes you feel sexy, call someone who makes you laugh, make someone else laugh! By embracing your power, you’re growing and embracing your queendom It is not a fairytale or fantasy that you get to have a shining, powerful, rock star version of your life, whatever that means to you. You create your world, even when you don’t feel any control over it. You get to choose your response, and that response is the next piece in creating your world It is a dance between what is out of your control and what you can control Take time every day and feel how best to express your soul’s cry Maybe it’s breathing, yoga, dancing---GET INTO YOUR BODY Really intentional work doesn’t have to last a long time. You can do really powerful work with your body in a few minutes. Engage with other Queens who can lift you up Write down or speak out loud who you are and how you want to feel that day We ultimately do what we want. So if you focus on how you want to feel, you will inevitably do the things that make you feel that way. Who are you? Get clear on that. Because in the moments when you need to engage your power, it’s going to come from knowing deeply, who you are. It’s an unshakeable confidence that who you are, is Divine. Interview- Melissa Alvarado Sierra I got to know Melissa’s work when I read “Why I Abandoned the American Dream and Followed My Puerto Rican Dream Instead” The physical movement coincides with the emotional movement. Witnessing a suicide in San Francisco clarified what she wanted, to write and go back to PR The Coquí, if you take it outside the island, it often dies Everybody has a different journey I marry my feminist self with my Puerto-Rican self Rosario Ferré is an inspiration Women in PR is a reflection of the island of PR Machismo is a big issue My power comes from fighting against patriarchal society I was raised in, as well as the colony of Puerto Rico. PR women are colonized and brutalized too. The fight for women’s rights goes along with the fight for freedom of our island. Have to negotiate being a powerful, independent woman, with the fact that our identity is tied to a legacy of patriarchy Underground way of using power as a woman by flirting and using your body. How do I take those things that are inherently part of me, that have been used to keep me under control, for my own power? When i first got my period I was told I couldn’t go out and play with the boys anymore I screamed in protest on the page When I write about people, I remind them that every experience has different lenses, and understanding that helps to avoid minimizing others experience or voice. I fought to be a writer, so I’m happy. All the dark sides, all the struggles, I'm ok with it. It took years. I started at 25, which is late. While modeling, I did a writing internship on the side, without telling anyone. Slowly started writing and getting things published, and eventually gave up modeling to write full-time. Being far away from home gave me a freedom to work on my dreams secretly, and nurture it, and then tell people when there was something to show How do you nourish yourself? Because I move around a lot, I try to keep something stable with me I always have my books with me I try to read every day I try to write every day, even if it’s something silly, like describing a palm tree. It’s a muscle that needs to be moved every day. And it’s also my therapy I talk to myself, freely I fight for my own little 9 year old self, as my own protector As I age, I stand up for myself more I spend my energy on me first, then others Not selfish, it’s self-care Think about being pregnant with your inner child, about mothering your inner child Liberating ourselves will liberate our children, especially our daughters What was it like coming back to PR fully empowered, living the dreams and life you created for yourself? Once it’s out there and tangible, people accept it, but when you’re working on it, people don’t understand the process. I decided my life was precious, and I wasn’t going to waste it doing something I wasn’t excited about. It’s important to see ourselves represented in art, it’s how we know we matter and we have a voice What seeds do you want to plant with our audience to “Grow the Queendom?” Nurture your passion. Your voice is valuable and we need to hear it. Q&A Why are the groin and stomach the places that usually retain the most lymphatic fluid? The groin and stomach have the most lymph nodes, because we excrete the most from these areas (pee, poop, women bleed) When lymphatic fluid builds up, we feel puffy and inflamed Since the most amount of lymphatic fluid passes through these lymph nodes, when they are clogged by toxins, these areas of the body become the most lymphatically inflamed. Send in your questions: queen@growthequeendom.com; IG and FB- @queendom.come.podcast Online video coaching with me through BEAM+Flow “Embodied Flow Sessions” (bodywork, feelings, hormone balancing, creative coaching)- beaming@beamandflow.com IG and FB: @beam.and.flow or @chloecofresi During Coronavirus, all embodied flow sessions are pay what you can. If you’re an essential worker, they’re free! MOMENT OF FLOW “BOOM” by Chloé Cofresí Boom! It's 4 am the power goes out I'm on the roof The entire building is shaking, and I look out There are people flooding the street in cars Running, shouting, laughing Laughter, thats the craszy thing The world is ending and we're laughing Because why not? Because. Why? Not? And as the world shakes, and Yemaya comes up form the ocean I'm left wondering Is this it? And all I can think is "Protect me, protect my family, protect this house, protect my island. Protect me, protect my family, protect this house, protect my island." And thankfully, we're protected But my brothers and sisters in the south, they're not And their entire life is gone In a second And I'm here I made it We're ok It doesn't feel right Something's off So I text back to the "mainland" Who's up? Who's awake It's 4 am And I get a smile on my face Because of someone Someone who cares For me, for my family, for this house, for this island "Protect me, protect my family, protect this house, protect my island." And we're here So the next day we gather in cars, and we get supplies And we drive down To the damage. There is no power There are lines filling up gas stations We don't know how long it's gonna take Pero somo Boricuas, pa'que tu lo sepas! We're Puerto-Rican, just so you fucking know it! And we come together And it doesn't matter if Washington or our Governor hear us We hear each other And we're together And when the earth shakes We stand up We say We're here, and you can shake all you want But we're here And we're together And we're not going anyWHERE Somos Boricuas pa'que tu lo sepas!

If you have a pulse I’m sure at some point in your life you’ve asked yourself this very same question, right? “Why do I stop working out?” “How come I can never stick to my new diet? “Why do I start new things and quit?” Why am I always broke?” And, the list goes on. What commitments do you have a hard time keeping? Answer that now then listen to this week’s episode and it will be obvious why you don’t keep your commitments. I mentioned a theory on the podcast a couple weeks ago about how I expected that higher class shooters would probably pull away from lower class shooters on the shorter stages moreso than the longer stages, but gthat it was just a theory because I didn't want to do the math. Well, I got an email from Louis, and he pulled the data from the different stages at the 2017 Production Nationals and... I was totally wrong. Louis broke down the stages from Nationals, then charted the median percentage by round count on a chart and it turns out that the median finish from each classification was about the same on all the different round count stages. Louis has been pulling the numbers on some other things with classifications and whatnot and if you want to see them, look in the shownotes for this episode and I'll have a link to his github page with the deets: https://lstange.github.io/uspsa/classification_vs_performance.html (By the way, if you didn't know this, you *should* be able to access all the links and stuff from the podcast shownotes in whatever podcast app you're using. I always tell you to go to triangletactical.net/280 or whatever, that's unnecessary for most of you, all the links should be right in your podcast app in the shownotes for this episode). Why do people quit shooting? Trying to think of people who I know who have actually just quit, vs those who have just not been to a match in a while for one reason or another, but have every intention to shoot again. I've "quit" twice over the years. - Ammo crunch after the 2012 Obama Election - Hardcore burnout after ROing way too much So, I emailed everyone on the Triangle Tactical email list and asked them if they've ever quit shooting, and why. I got a bunch of answers that are pretty wide ranging. (BTW, this is what I like to use the email list for, so if you're not on it, get on it!) Interestingly, a bunch of people emailed me back and mentioned that cost probably makes some people quit, but nobody specifically emailed me back and said that they've quit because of cost. Joe mentioned that he's in Michigan and the winters shut down most of the matches up there. Jason and Khan mentioned time away from family. Some matches take a LONG time to get through, so I can see that. With a baby on the way, balancing matches and practice and family time is going to be something I need to put more emphasis on going forward. Several folks mentioned jobs. Either job loss, or new jobs, or jobs taking up way too much time on the weekends. Aaron actually said that he quit a job because his days off were only during the week and he had to work every weekend so he changed it up to get his weekends off. Quitting because the match near you isn't challenging. Aaron mentioned that quit because a local match jsut wasn't pushing him the way it needed to, took some time off and came back as a USPSA shooter where he's being challenged a lot more, and that's making things better for him. Boring clubs. James mentioned a "looks the same every month" match that was near him years ago that drove him away. A couple folks talked about physical injuries. Things that come from practice like tennis elbow, as well as other injuries that just keep them from shooting. Surgeries, etc. So, with all this said, the reasons that people have quit shooting, lets talk for a minute about what's brought people back: Friends Needing a competitive outlet Something to do with kids as they've gotten older and need more man skills. Noticing that competition makes them want to be more athletic and get into better shape than they were previously. Q&A: "Why is there not a specific division for compact size firearms such as G19, CZ P01 or P07 etc?" Here's the thing: we don't need carve outs for every size of firearm. If we were to do that we wind up with way too many divisions, and things just get silly after a while. In my opinion, the other reason for this is because most shooters don't want to shoot their little tiny guns in USPSA, at least not long term. 32rd stages with little guns that sometimes don't even hold 10 rounds doesn't really sound like a great time to me. I get that the guns mentioned all hold 10+ rounds, but if we're going to go down the tiny-gun rabbit hole, what about guns like the Shield, XDs, and others? So, with all this said, I think the reasoning here is that USPSA isn't really interested in doing what IDPA does. IDPA has a place for these little guns, and they work really well in that game, because of round count, and because of the concealed carry sort of design of that game. All this isn't to day that USPSA doesn't have a place for the compact guns you mentioned though. All three guns you mentioned (Glock 19, CZ P01, and CZ P07) are specifically called out as legal on the USPSA Production list. There's nothing keeping these guns from being shot in Production, I see guys shoot Glock 19's in Production all the time. "Should competitors be allowed to shoot two divisions in the same match? I'm starting to see this a lot locally where people are shooting both handgun and PCC during the match (and paying two entry fees)." No. We have a hard enough time getting shooters to help during the match, so letting someone shoot, then wander off to the safe area to bag a gun and un-bag another one, then come back to the stage, stuff mags full from the gun they just shot, check the gear for the gun that they're about to shoot, then shoot the second gun, then wander back to the safe area to switch back, stuff mags for the other gun, means that this person will NEVER run the timer or work the tablet. They'll NEVER paste target for more than a shooter or two per stage if we're lucky, and then they're taking up more time by shooting the second gun. With that said, if there's a multi-day match and shooters can shoot different divisions on different days, no problem. There's also a local BUG match that allows multiple entries, and for that match it works really well. The stages are 5rds tops. No reloads, and no holster needed, so you can finish your first gun, bag it, and take your second gun out of it's bag when it's time to shoot. Easy peasy, and it works just fine because there isn't much pasting and resetting to do, so there is time for people to switch guns at that match.

During college, Kyla struggled with her food choices. Her decision to restrict her diet led to binge eating. Kyla tells of a “low moment” standing in front of the freezer, eating her roommate’s Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. This was her “rock bottom.” During her journey to heal, she discovered her hurts were rooted in her childhood. This allowed her to sort through her “life truths,” and employ self compassion for healing. Eventually, she became a health coach, seeking to teach “food freedom” to others. Q & A Why is self love important? Self love is the most untapped resource. It is something we are not taught to utilize or understand. What was the number one thing that was holding you back from accepting self love? All of my many, many years of conditioning, and patterns, and beliefs that I had held. Who is one person who has changed your life for the better? That would be my lovely health coach, Jamie Mendel. What is the best advice you have ever received? “The only way out is through.” Can you share a resource, an app or a tool that we can use to build our selfcare practice. I love cooking for self care. The recipe blog I look at most often is Minimalist baker, which has interesting and creative food. Do you have a favorite quote? “You do not have to be good. You do not have to walk on your knees through the desert for a thousand miles repenting. You only have to let your body love what it loves.” What book are you reading right now? Women, Food, and Desire, by Alexander Jamison. What is the one thing that you are most passionate about? Being a warrior for self love. Guest Bio Kyla Sokoll-Ward is a food and body love coach on a mission to help women make peace with food so they can stop playing small and bring their gifts to the world. After years of beating herself up for her lack of "willpower" and abs, she decided it was time to change how she treats herself. She's here to help you find food freedom, embrace your body, and live in blissful self-love. www.kylasw.com www.facebook.com/kylasokollward www.instagram.com/kylasokollward www.twitter.com/kylasokollward
Maggie Dennison shares with us both external and internal journeys. In the 70’s, through a series of events, Maggie became a world traveler. For two years, she traveled the globe, meeting others and exploring the land. By happenstance, she reconnected with a person she’d met once before, who invited her to a conference. This led to Maggie meeting a spiritual teacher who has guided her life to this day. She talks about how she “just knew” she needed to connect with this person. Q & A Why is self love important in your personal life? I’m a big believer that your outer world reflects your inner world, and you put out affects the world around you and what comes towards you. So the more I take care of me and value me, the more centered I am. What was the number one thing that was holding you back from accepting self love? I think the main thing is conditioning. I grew up in the back woods of Ireland, where girls were taught to be good girls, make things right, other people were more important than you. Who is one person who has changed your life for the better? There are two people that changed my life, first, my boss who gave me, when I went traveling, assurances that if I got stranded somewhere in the world, he would fly me home. Another boss led me to realize how strong and confident I really am, just by how he treated me, and talked about me to others. What is the best advice you have ever received? Listen to myself. What is a self care habit that you practice regularly? That’s an easy one. Meditation, above everything else. Can you share a resource, an app or a tool that we can use to build our selfcare practice. There’s something I just came across yesterday, I go to Unity Church. They have “silent unity” where you can call in and have people pray with you live on the phone. They have developed an app called UPray. You can submit prayer requests, but they also have mediations on there. I am exploring it now. It’s very non-denominational. What book are you reading right now? My favorite books are crime novels. I am really into psychology, I really love digging into what things make people do what they do. Do you have a favorite quote? “Trust in God, but tie your camel up first.” What is the one thing that you are most passionate about? Helping my clients be better so they can be successful. Guest Bio Maggie is a lifelong adventurer. Her curiosity first took her on an outer journey around the world and along the way her journey of discovery turned inward. Since then her path of personal and spiritual growth has been a main focus of her life. www.MyMarketingMessage.com www.Facebook.com/MaggieDennison Twitter: @MaggieDennison Linkedin: www.linkedin.com/in/MaggieDennison
Calvin Correli shares with us his journey through his business. He started without much vision about who he wanted to be, but rather, focused on what he wanted to produce. After losing all of his clients while living temporarily with his father, he began to explore working his business in conformance with pursuing his life purpose. Q & A Why is self love important in your personal life? Have you tried the opposite? Because in my experience it feels horrible, and it doesn’t really accomplish much. So I would say, “Why not?” I can’t think of a good reason not to do it. What was the number one thing that was holding you back from accepting self love? I was very committed to not allowing it. What is the best advice you have ever received? Follow your heart. What is a self care habit that you practice regularly? Sleeping, eating healthy, and meditating. Can you share a resource, an app or a tool that we can use to build our selfcare practice. I enjoy walking with Audible, various audible books. What book are you reading right now? Out of Your Mind, by Alan Watts. What is the one thing that you are most passionate about? Creating. Right now I am writing a book and making as much music as I possibly can. Guest Bio Calvin Correli is an artist, entrepreneur, and the CEO of a holistically focused, multi-million dollar software company called Simplero. Calvin is passionate about helping online business owners do exactly what brings them most alive and is currently working on branching out to bring all of his talents -- including music, spirituality and personal growth into an exciting new service for entrepreneurs. http://calvincorreli.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/truecalvin https://www.facebook.com/calvintruth https://www.instagram.com/calvincorreli https://www.youtube.com/calvincorrelishow

On her 21st birthday, she was involved in a car accident with a drunk driver. This led to a complete re-evaluation of what she was supposed to be doing with her life. Ezzie’s personal career began as a lawyer. While she enjoyed the busy practice, she was out of touch with her body and her self. Searching for a deeper purpose and meaning, Ezzie began exploring other options. As she journaled, she would look up at the moon. This led to a natural curiosity on how the moon influences people. She began counseling others. This began as a side business. She was delighted to meet others and discover the possibility of coaching others full time. Q & A Why do you feel self love is important? This is the best route to be able to be in the world, and to be yourself, and to have that healthy self respect. And to really be able to make smart choices in your life about who you spend your time with. What was the number one thing that was holding you back from accepting self love? I think a lack of awareness. I don’t think I necessarily had the emotional tools. Who is one person who has changed your life for the better? Kevin Farro, one of my coaches. What is the best advice you have ever received? Question everything. What is a self care habit that you practice regularly? I meditate every day. Susan was in the corporate world for 20 years. During a challenging time, she sought the services of an executive coach to discover tools and techniques to address her work challenges. She started by adjusting her mindset, and going in to work with the idea of learning from challenges, rather than letting challenges define her. In the end, her coaching led her to leave her corporate job, and start a coaching practice of her own. Q & A Why is self love important and what was the number one thing that was holding you back from accepting self love? Christa suffered postpartum depression. At the same time her marriage was failing. She lost her sense of self. In an attempt to return to her happy life, Christa took the unusual step of exploring what she used to like. At 270 pounds, she became a fitness coach. She also started journaling. She is now empowered to help others. Q & A Why do you believe that self love is important? Self-love is everything. You cannot pour yourself into other people until you pour into yourself. What was the number one thing that was holding you back from accepting self love? The one major thought that I kept having was I didn't deserve it. I didn't deserve to feel love, because I wasn't this mold or that mold or I didn't look like this. For me it was a lot of "I don't deserve it." Who is one person who has changed your life for the better? There have been a lot of people. I have found friends online. I have coaches. I have some mentors locally who have really helped. I have found a huge network of people who I have never even met in person. What is the best advice you have ever received? You have to love yourself before you can love anyone else. What is a self care habit that you practice regularly? Journaling. Journaling is key. Can you share a resource, an app or a tool that we can use to build our selfcare practice. Calm, for meditating. That's a great one. I also have the Danielle Laporte’s Truth Bombs. Those are two of my favorites. What book are you reading right now? Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself, by Joe Dispenza. What is the one thing that you are most passionate about? Helping other women. Guest Bio Christa Pepper became a Personal Trainer when she weighed 275lbs. Christa believes health and fitness is so much more than what Pinterest shows us - it's self-love, it's confidence, it's living into our strengths. Christa’s life mission is to inspire and empower women to live their best life, starting with overcoming the limiting beliefs we put on ourselves. Jen Ryan was a young entrepreneur. From there she moved to the corporate world for about a decade. While comfortable, Jen didn’t love her job. Jen had ideas about wanting to do more, but acknowledges it is scary to take a risk. Unexpectedly, her corporate employer eliminated her position in the company, across the country. Jen took the opportunity to follow her own true passion helping people get rid of stress and overwhelm. Jen also talks about her epiphany recognizing the parallels between her yoga practice and her life. Q & A Why do you believe that self love is important? “I feel that as women, . . . as being care takers and care givers, we are trying to constantly do everything for everybody, and be everything for everybody. But here’s the deal: If you are not loving yourself and you are not filling your own cup up with positive affirmation and love and attention then, really, we don’t show up the way that we truly want to show up for others. So, it’s really hard to be there for our friends and our family and our children and our community, if we can’t be there for ourselves as well. So we have to make sure that we show up the best versions of ourselves in order to give what it is that we truly want to give.” What was the number one thing that was holding you back from accepting self love? Feeling like I wasn’t good enough. Who is one person who has changed your life for the better? I would say my good friend Elizabeth, making me stop and breathe. Also, there was a woman that was my mentor in my early twenties, who introduced me to some of the finer things in life, how to be a softer version of myself, and to believe in myself. What is the best advice you have ever received? Just breathe. Just be yourself, because yourself is perfectly perfect. What is a self care habit that you practice regularly? Meditation. Do you have a favorite quote? “If one advances competently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live a life as he imagined, he will meet a success unexpected in common hours.” Henry David Thoreau. Can you share a resource, an app or a tool that we can use to build our selfcare practice. Besides your yoga mat, there’s an app that I like, called “Calm.” There’s a lot of different meditations and sounds that are calming. What book are you reading right now? Most of my books right now are all yoga based, learning more about being a yoga instructor. What is the one thing that you are most passionate about? Besides, of course, my business, if I had to pick one thing, I am extremely passionate about helping women find a life of purpose, peace, and prosperity. Guest Bio Jen Ryan is a Success and Life Balance Coaching. She works with professional women who are stressed and overwhelmed to the point it is effecting their productivity in their professional and personal life. Laneic had commitments to school, work, and the Army when she was happily surprised with a new baby. Unfortunately, juggling all her responsibilities became more than she could reasonably manage. Her lifelong journal habit, along with her commitment to spending time with friends, became a form of self care. Due to a number of reasons, Laneic faced a disappointing career determination. She spent several months debating whether to fight the decision, or accept it. Upon deciding to accept it, she was also forced to move back in with her parents. During that time, she realized the importance of self care. When the obligations were forced off her plate, she learned the key to self care included limiting her obligations. Q & A Why do you believe that self love is important? I really think it’s important because you’re the foundation of everything that you output. So, if you feel good about yourself and you’re loving yourself, that radiates into everything else that you’re doing. And it affects everyone else that you’re around. So you really want something like that to resonate around your environment and other people. What was the number one thing that was holding you back from accepting self love? Most definitely, guilt. I was feeling guilty that I couldn’t handle everything. Who is one person who has changed your life for the better? My son and my mom. My son motivates me to get things done and inspires me to practice self care. What is the best advice you have ever received? “Let it go,” from the movie Frozen. What is a self care habit that you practice regularly? Journaling and long showers. Do you have a favorite quote? “Just because you’ve reached the top, don’t forget the work that’s underneath all of it.” Can you share a resource, an app or a tool that we can use to build our selfcare practice. I use Evernote to help me stay organized. I also use sleep tight. What book are you reading right now? Give More Love. What is the one thing that you are most passionate about? Connecting with other women. Guest Bio Laneic Lavalle is a self-care and wellness coach for busy mothers. With a 2 year old of her own, and a busy business owner of Mynameisnotmommy, she believes maintaining a self-care routine is crucial. Jessie Sarah was living a nice life in a nice neighborhood, when one day her husband came home and surprised her by asking for a divorce. During the divorce proceedings, she discovered credit card debt and other debts she had previously been unaware of. From feeling like she had it all, to feeling like her life was in shambles, Jessie Sarah was determined to start to heal. Jessie Sarah discusses how she launched on a love journey with herself. She also discusses how her gratitude practice changed her life. Q & A Why do you believe that self love is important? Self love is important to me because it affects everyone around me. When I love myself, I set the standard for how people are going to love me and treat me. What was the number one thing that was holding you back from accepting self love? A lot of it is old patterns and habits. Growing up in a family where self love was not something that was promoted, those old habits were what I knew. What has helped is being surrounded with people who practice self love. Who is one person who has changed your life for the better? I have a very, very dear friend who is a good example of self love. He sets boundaries really well with people. . . It made me realize I need to do the same thing in my life. What is the best advice you have ever received? Spend time with people you want to become like. What is a self care habit that you practice regularly? Gratitude. It’s one of those things that really changes your mindset. It makes me so happy. Do you have a favorite quote? There are so many! I don’t think I could pick just one. But of course, it would probably be around gratitude, and how much gratitude shifts your mindset from one of lack to one of abundance. Can you share a resource, an app or a tool that we can use to build our selfcare practice. Voxer. It’s like a walkie talkie app. Instead of sending text messages, they are little voice messages. What book are you reading right now? Get Rich, Lucky Bitch, by Denise Duffield Thomas. What is the one thing that you are most passionate about? “If you haven’t figured it out already, I like to talk about gratitude. I like to teach people how important it is and how it changes mindsets.” Guest Bio Jessie Sarah is a fitness coach and nurse turned transformational coach after discovering the powerful commitment to heal through gratitude. She works with clients to create massive healing from their past. Because Jessie has overcome massive obstacles in her own life, she is willing to have difficult conversations and get creative with others to help and empower them to overcome obstacles they face. www.facebook.com/teamneversaycant
Marie-Claire struggled with depression for 30 years. She ended up in a place where she found she could no longer feel her feelings. She launched on a journey to discover where her happiness was hiding, which led her to become a happiness ninja. Q & A Why do you believe that self love is important? Self love is important to me because it’s about taking that time for yourself, and knowing and accepting you as you are with your flaws and imperfections. What was the number one thing that was holding you back from accepting self love? The one core reason was complete lack of worth. I’d closed up to myself completely and worried about everybody else. Who is one person who has changed your life for the better? Matt, my other half. He refused to take this closed up person and chipped away, brick by brick, to get to the shiny person on the inside. What is the best advice you have ever received? “Stop pretending to be somebody you’re not. . . Drop the f’ing mask.” What is a self care habit that you practice regularly? Start your day with a “yeah.” It’s making sure you do something positive in the morning for you, before doing anything for anyone else. Do you have a favorite quote? “You cannot protect yourself from sadness, without protecting yourself from happiness.” Can you share a resource, an app or a tool that we can use to build our selfcare practice. I use something called the Lotus Bud. It’s chimes at times during the day, and you can use it to pull yourself back in the present moment. What book are you reading right now? Not living a life of “shoulds” and “have too’s.” Guest Bio Marie-Claire is a Happiness Ninja. Becky Howell is the Holistic Success Coach, as well as author, therapist, and facilitator. Her newest book will be available the end of February and is a delicious blend of light hearted drawings with leading questions and deeper self discovery, titled 'My Happiness Book.' She is also the co-author of Receiving Unconditionally. Q & A Why do you believe that self love is important? If you don’t have self love, if you can’t love yourself, how are you able to receive love? I found myself so unlovely, I wasn’t willing to accept love from someone else. . . everything stems from this mindset, and self love is a mindset. What was the number one thing that was holding you back from accepting self love? There’s an idea in psychology, “We are all the product of our parents being too good and not good enough.” A lot of people struggle because they don’t want to go into the past. They don’t want to explore the blocks. I wasn’t willing to love myself because I wasn’t perfect. Who is one person who has changed your life for the better? My husband. He’s my rock. What is the best advice you have ever received? I don’t know if it counts as advice received, but I am a book fiend. One of my childhood books was about your purpose, going out in the world to make it a more beautiful place. When people are down in the dumps, it is easy to think the world is this ugly, nasty, mean thing out to get them. If they cling to that idea of, “be the change you want to see in the world,” “make the world a more beautiful place,” “how can you help the world evolve upwards,” then that’s a very, more hopeful place to be. What is a self care habit that you practice regularly? Getting out into nature by myself. Breathing and letting shields go. Just being able to be out there with no context or pretext and just exist. Do you have a favorite quote? No. I’ve got about six different ones. “Love is the answer.” “Love thyself first.” Too many to pick one. Can you share a resource, an app or a tool that we can use to build our selfcare practice. There are some really good online yoga programs. If you can do yoga, which is a movement meditation, or download a meditation on your phone and go for a walk. Incorporating the mind, body, spirit, and energy altogether is wonderful for you. What book are you reading right now? The Original Swiss Family Robinson, and The Seven Spiritual Laws, by Depak Chopra. What is the one thing that you are most passionate about? Having people be the own advocate for their health, and understanding it is a four corner approach of mind, body, spirit, and energy. Guest Bio Becky Howell is the Holistic Success Coach, as well as author, therapist, and facilitator. Diagnosed with a rare health condition, Ysmay was home schooled. Finishing her high school curriculum at age 12, she moved on to college classes. Ysmay moved out on her own at 17. Ysmay soon found herself in an abusive relationship. In her interview with Just Stay Curious, she describes her journey out of the relationship, subsequent mistakes, and lessons learned from the experience. Q & A Why is self love so important? I kind of pick all the wrong people. I’ve discovered that if I don’t put my self care first, that it doesn’t happen. This is nobody’s fault but my own when I put myself at the bottom of the priority list. . . What was the number one thing that was holding you back from accepting self love? I felt like I must somehow be deeply flawed or broken to make someone I love beat the crap out of me. . . Who is one person who has changed your life for the better? It’s a tie between my grandparents. My grandfather drove across the country and rescued me. My grandmother took care of me after my heart surgery. What is the best advice you have ever received? You are not a tree. If you are unhappy, move. Do something about it. Make a change. What is a self care habit that you practice regularly? I like to dance around in the kitchen when I’m cooking. Do you have a favorite quote? “Create an ideal story of your future. And tell it to yourself over and over again.” Danielle LePorte. Can you share with us a resource or an app that we can use to help our own self care practice grow? Brain.fm. It’s a paid app, but it has all these really amazing audios. You can meditate, there are different soundscapes, it uses the science of brain entrainment, so the audio you are hearing, . . . on the lower levels of what we can consciously perceive, there are frequencies that help you get into a certain mood. It’s really powerful. What book are you reading right now? Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear, by Elizabeth Gilbert. What is the one thing that you are most passionate about? Yoga. Yoga has changed everything for me. I’ve become more aware of what my body needs. I’ve become more aware of the situations I find myself in. It is a practice that you live on and off the mat. Guest Bio Ysmay is a digital strategist and business coach who got her start building websites back in 1999. Rochelle explores movement as medicine, as metaphor, and as prayer. During her interview with Just Stay Curious, Rochelle discusses her “dark night of the soul,” a year of struggling to work through the end of a difficult relationship. She describes her feelings of not feeling worthy, and her realization she was attracted to rejection, as well as her journey to find her own sense of self. She sees her dark night of the soul as a gift she learned from, and thus, doesn’t have to repeat it. She also takes the lessons forward in helping other women heal. Rochelle also shares her pilgrimage to Peru. Q & A Why is self love so important? What was the number one thing that was holding you back from accepting self love? Being busy. I was too tired and too busy to take the time. Who is one person who has changed your life for the better? In this moment, I am really grateful for Danielle LaPorte. What is the best advice you have ever received? A dear friend of mine was talking about fear. She said, “On the other side of it is always love. You just have to go through it.” What is a self care habit that you practice regularly? A bath at the end of the day, with Epsom salts, essential oils, and a good book. Do you have a favorite quote? What you look for is what you see. Can you share with us a resource or an app that we can use to help our own self care practice grow? I love Oracle cards. My favorite cards are from Alana Fairchild. You can also get apps that have Oracle card. What book are you reading right now? Entangled by Graham Hancock What is the one thing that you are most passionate about? Elevating the feminine to her rightful place. Guest Bio Rochelle Schieck is the founder of Qoya. Since its inception in 2009, she has trained hundreds of Qoya teachers, taught thousands of Qoya movement classes, and led dozens of retreats in the most sacred places on earth with one intention in mind: to remember, and to help others do the same. In figuring out “who Wendy is” and “what Wendy wants,” she found a way out of chaos and into a place of stillness. Q & A Why do you think self love is important? Jennifer let go of everything she spent a decade building, including possessions, and her husband. This led her to a wonderful new life. Q & A Why do you think self love is so important? Without a doubt, self love is important because, for me, when I don’t take care of myself, I don’t care about anything else. I don’t care about other people, I don’t care about my life. When you feel good about yourself, you can help everyone. You are capable. What was the number one thing that was holding you back from accepting self love? Brief Overview Feeling uninspired and unmotivated by her career, she turned to food, seeking pleasure. This resulted in serious stomach issues, as the flora and fauna in her gut responded to the excess sugar. As a pharmacist, Jenna was shocked to discover that her physical symptoms couldn’t be treated with traditional medicine. Jenna sought out a kinesiologist, who introduced her to the world of alternative healing. Jenna talks about her process and her method of being truthful with herself, and listening to her feelings. Q & A Why is self love so important? Self love gets so bastardized in today’s culture. We think that we have to be positive in order to love ourselves. And that is just BS. . . If we can’t practice love in here, we can’t love out in the world. What was the number one thing that was holding you back from accepting self love? Two of my biggest blocks were that I had acne for many years, and I allowed myself to be in a relationship where my love was conditional on my external beauty. Who is one person who has changed your life for the better? I would have to say the very first mentor, the very first kinesiologist I saw, took me under her wing out of the love and kindness of her heart. What is the best advice you have ever received? “You are a powerful woman. Don’t ever forget it.” What is a self care habit that you practice regularly? My daily embodiment practice. Do you have a favorite quote? “How we spend our time is a reflection of the truth that we are actually living.” Guest Bio Jenna Ward is an Embodiment + Energy Medicine Mentor & Founder of The Embodied Woman. Jane Travis tells us about her decision, after years of struggle, to seek counseling. She describes how it slowly changed her life for the better. Jane now counsels others. She also has a 21 day self care challenge which can be found on her website. Q & A Why is self love important to you? It’s everything. It’s vital. We can’t function without it. We have a responsibility to ourselves to take care of ourselves and look after ourselves. What was the number one thing that was holding you back from accepting self love? It was myself. I was the person holding myself back from self love. I didn’t like myself. That was me, being “Blinkered.” I couldn’t see any of my good qualities. I was holding myself back. What is the best advice you have ever received? My mum always used to say, “Never trust a man who says ‘trust me.’” What is a self care habit that you practice regularly? I make sure I get time to myself every week. I am absolutely fine saying “no” to doing things in order to recharge. Do you have a favorite quote? “You are not a problem to be fixed. As long as you are alive. . . you will still be learning.” Can you share with us a resource or an app that we can use to help our own self care practice grow? “Relax Melodies.” It’s a free app to help with sleep. Struggling with an eating disorder for many years, Michelle Vina-Baltsas faced her fears and addressed her issues. She talks about her current relationship with food, and how she learned to love herself. Michelle also describes how she treats herself with kindness. Q & A Why do you think self love is important? It’s the foundation of my life. When I’m not in self love, I’m in bashing, and that’s not a good place for me to be. There’s no happiness there. What was the number one thing that was holding you back from accepting self love? For me it was that I had to do it perfectly. I didn’t realize there were degrees – like I could get there. I thought, what about taking baby steps in between working for towards that. When I did that, I felt much better. Who is one person who has changed your life for the better? My Husband. I feel his love all the time. What is the best advice you have ever received? Everything I need is already inside of me. What is a self care habit that you practice regularly? Meditation for me is a daily practice that has dramatically changed my life. Do you have a favorite quote? “I praise you for all I am, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” Scripture. Can you share with us a resource or an app that we can use to help our own self care practice grow? I highly recommend “Calm.” It’s a free app with wonderful guided meditations. Sarah Steckler: After a cross country move, Sarah was surprised to notice a shift in her moods. Things got progressively worse. She describes her desire to “get better,” to overcome her debilitating depression, and her desire to make change happen. Sarah now channels her experience to help others through depression, as well as other challenges, without judgement. Q & A Why is self love important to you? Self love is important to me because it’s all about building awareness with yourself. It’s really developing a relationship with yourself. What was the number one thing that was holding you back from accepting self love? I think it was that I didn’t need it, that it was kind of fluffy. . . that I was tough enough that I didn’t need to take care of myself that way. Who is one person who has changed your life for the better? It sounds cliché, but it has to be, and is, my husband. What is the best advice you have ever received? My dad always told me that in life, there are a lot of different decisions you have to make. He always told me it’s okay to make different decisions in life, as long as it’s not something that crushes your soul. What is a self care habit that you practice regularly? Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) is something I listen to while I am working or when I am trying to fall asleep. There are videos on You Tube. I highly recommend searching for Gentle Whispering. She’s a great place to start. Do you have a favorite quote? “We must embrace pain, and burn it as fuel for our journey.” Kenji Miyazawa What book are you reading right now? The Opposite of Love, by Julie Buxbaum. What is the one thing that you are most passionate about? Learning and reading. Michelle Kirsch talks about a time in her life before she lived an intuitive and intentional life. She describes a series of choices and challenges that led to her current state. Journaling her thoughts and fears, she would ask herself, “Is that true?” She channels her “Wise Inner Self” to allow herself to write freely and without judgement. She found her intuitive and intentional life when she took the first step of “Just start listening.” Q & A Why do you think self love is so important? It really all begins with self love. If you don’t love yourself, you’re not going to make yourself a priority. You’re not going to think who you are on the inside is worth discovering, or uncovering. . . you’re not going to take care of yourself. Self love is necessary for happiness. What was the number one thing that was holding you back from accepting self love? I think, really, fear. Fear that who I was on the inside wasn’t really good enough. Who is one person who has changed your life for the better? My kids. They definitely have helped me be a more loving person and a more compassionate person. What is the best advice you have ever received? Education is never a waste. What is a self care habit that you practice regularly? I love automatic writing. I think it is important to find an outlet where you can express your true feelings. On a physical note, I take hot baths regularly. Do you have a favorite quote? “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” Eleanor Roosevelt Can you share with us a resource or an app that we can use to help our own self care practice grow? Think Up App. You can record affirmations in your own voice. What book are you reading right now? I just started reading Adventures for your Soul by Shannon Kaiser. What is the one thing that you are most passionate about? Strengthening my intuition. Guest Bio Michelle Kirsch is a transformational coach who is passionate about intuitive & intentional living. An Interview with Victoria Hodder Guest Bio Previously a workaholic Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) teacher and obsessive traveler, the great changes in my life began in my recovery from an eating disorder. As I learned more and more about confidence, I saw how I could use it to help my students and the people I love. Now I am turning more towards confidence coaching in my life and work. www.morethangrammar.wordpress.com Brief Overview Victoria Hodder describes a low point in her life, when, upon returning from a trip, she discovered she had an eating disorder. She describes her thoughts about being in recovery, being recovered, and how the whole process has made her stronger. Q & A Why do you think self love is important? If we can’t love ourselves, we can’t do anything properly - we cant love anyone else properly and we will self destruct. What was the number one thing that was holding you back from accepting self love? Me. Definitely me. There’s me, the real me, who I am becoming closer to being, but there was also the scared me that thought, “If I love myself, will anyone else love me? What happens if I let go of the mask?” But the fact of the matter is, when you let go of the mask, you not only love yourself, but the people around you love you more. Who is one person who has changed your life for the better? I honestly can’t think of one person. There were so many people out there that have helped me. What is the best advice you have ever received? “You’ve survived 100 percent of your worst days so far. Keep going.” What is a self care habit that you practice regularly? Taking time to ground myself. Do you have a favorite quote? “You’ve survived 100 percent of your worst days so far. Keep going.” Can you share with us a resource or an app that we can use to help our own self care practice grow? I’ve recently become obsessed with Instagram. I follow Buddha Doodles. What book are you reading right now? I just finished The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho. What is the one thing that you are most passionate about? Helping people to see things differently, and helping people to see themselves differently.

What was the one thing that was holding you back from accepting self love? Thinking that my value, my self worth was connected to what I created instead of just because I was born and because I am. What You'll Hear: Fred was raised in a small village in Ghana. They had to walk a mile for water and carry it on their heads His father first came to America to Oklahoma City to go to the University. He was then badly injured and was able to bring his family to the U.S. to care for him Fred became a Christian after a bus ministry came to their apartment complex and invited them to church He joined the Navy after his mother died. He was tempted by the atmosphere but the Holy Spirit helped him. He needs wisdom when dealing with people who want to argue about politics and religion when he's at work in the Merchant Marines. We should never give up when it comes to our faith and our fight Intro Fred Abakah was born in Ghana, West Africa and came to the United States in 1976, residing in Oklahoma City, OK. His mother passed away three months before he graduated from High School in 1988. In 1990 he enlisted in the United States Navy. He went on to serve a successful 20 year military career, serving on the USS Missouri during Operation Desert Storm and retired from the US Navy in 2010. Since then he's been working as a merchant marine/ship's engineer primarily in the Gulf of Mexico. Fred and his wife Irene have three sons, Jabriel, Jedidiah, and Jeremiah. Q&A* Why and How Did You and Your Family Come to the United States? My father came through a foreign exchange program after hearing about America from my uncle. He was accepted to a University in Oklahoma. He came in 1974 and was working and going to school. He worked in a factory and had a bad accident so that he needed someone to care for him 24 hours a day, so his sponsor asked if someone back in Africa could come and care for him. My father asked for his wife and kids to come over. What Was Ghana Like? We lived in a village in the town of Bisease. We would have to travel a mile or two to fill buckets of water from a well and carry on top of my head. Our family lived together in a house called a compound, with grandparents, parents, and children all together. We would bake things in a mud oven and had an outhouse for a bathroom. When Did You First Become a Christian? After moving to the U.S. we lived in an apartment and I learned the language quickly. Every Saturday some Christian men would stop by and then we would ride the bus to church. At age 10, I realized God was speaking to me and I answered the Holy Spirit at an altar call. Tell Us About Your First Job Right out of High School I worked for one of our church members at their meat factory. I was called Smiling Fred. How Did You Get Into the Navy? I promised my Mom I would join the Air Force. After she passed away, I lost interest in the military but thought about it more and joined the Navy. It was fun and an adventure. Do You Have Any Stories to Share? I was in Thailand. The men were living in sin. I had someone back home thinking of me that kept me in check. I almost went along with the crowd, but the Holy Spirit spoke to me and instead I gave my Bible to a young girl. Tell Us About Your Current Job I work for the Merchant Marines. Not exactly Navy but we're still sailors. They carry supplies and goods and did so in past wars. It's a tough lifestyle, being away from home, having to deal with different personalities. Religion and politics will start an argument every time. You have to have wisdom in how to deal with each person. Spirit Round What is the Greatest Misunderstanding Men Have About Their Work Most people say they love their job but the truth is most people are doing it because they need the money. Most people would rather be doing something else. The right thing to say is "It's a great place to work" or "I enjoy working with the people".
