You can keep your dreams under wraps or unleash them into the world. For the musicians who comprise Dream Phases, holding back their musical visions has not been an option. Conceived in the private recesses of their L.A. home base, the band has expanded outwards by drawing upon the rich sonic heritage of West Coast pop/rock and skillfully reimagining it for the 21st Century.  But beyond its finely wrought sound and texture, there's an intensely personal quality to the work they create together. The dreams they explore transcend mere craft and calculation.Emerging from the City of Angels' neo-psychedelic rock scene in 2017, Dream Phases reflects California's natural splendor and adventuresome inner spirit in its music. The earthy-yet-exalted sounds of the Byrds, the Beach Boys and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young – as well as latter-day artists like the Rain Parade, Elliott Smith and Autolux – figure into the band's family tree. While this lineage is worth noting, what comes through in the band's latest work is an individual approach that translates the experiences of its members into something undeniably compelling. Dream Phases' initial flowering was as a solo project by Brandon. After gaining a wealth of experience working with such notable L.A.-area combos as Blank Tapes, the Relationship, Levitation Room and Nacosta, he decided to fully develop the songwriting side of his talents on his own. What began as a homebrewed project quickly turned into a collaborative stew as brother Shane and compadre Keveen helped him develop his compositions into a full-blown sound. Thanks for listening!!! The result is what we wish post-aughts music would have sounded like; layered with new-wave moodiness, and akin to Autolux, Massive Attack, Doves and Liars, to name a few. And with the musicians he sought out to fulfill that burden, including Kellii Scott on drums (Failure), Michael MacIvor on bass (Candiria), Mario Quintero (Spotlights) and vocalists Sabrina Ellie, Candice Freshko and Andrea Horne (Vaureen). --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nobodyspeaks/support

The Pipeman interviews John La Macchia. This is his first solo work ever. The pandemic gave John the opportunity to write new music from him and that was true to him. He had time to work and perfect it during the pandemic. There was psychedelic vibe to the Bled Out video. The writing process was very therapeutic to John. Johns' music can be very dark, and he sings about things that upset him. Because of that it allows him to release and be a happy person. For a long time, John didn't want to see celebrity wearing metal band shirts. The way it is now you have access to all kinds of music. The debut album called Thunderheads due May 20 on aqua lamb records. There are a few ways you can get the record. Each purchase comes with 100-page book of additional content. You can connect with John on all major platforms. You can stream on all major streaming platforms. He will be doing many tour dates to come. On May 20, the anticipated debut album from LaMacchia will be released via Aqualamb Records. Called Thunderheads, it features nine sweeping tracks that mark the first solo works from John LaMacchia – best known as the guitarist for Brooklyn hardcore/prog-metal group Candiria – though the new material is unlike anything the multi-instrumentalist has done to date and shows a new breadth to his versatile talent. Today, LaMacchia releases a psychedelic-tinged new video for the first single “Bled Out,” a deep dive through crunchy guitars and free-falling bass, entwined with the candy-sweet vocals blend of LaMacchia and Sabrina Ellie. The totality of Thunderheads presents a moody, experimental indie rock vibe, with layered sonic nuances and male-female vocal interplay that presents a dimensional new palette that is comparable to Massive Attack, Doves and Radiohead. Composed and recorded over the course of 2020 and 2021 during the pandemic break, Thunderheads plays like a lullaby for the apocalypse. With healthy doses of self-respect and emotional bravery that serve as a salve for our pandemic-weary heart, it allows listeners to escape a world that is falling apart with music and creativity. In addition to John LaMacchia, who has recorded all of the guitars, vocals, keyboards and programming for Thunderheads, additional guest contributions come courtesy of Kellii Scott (Failure) on drums, Michael MacIvor (Candiria) on bass guitar, Mario Quintero (Spotlights) on keyboards and Andrea Horne (Vaureen), Candice Freshko and Sabrina Ellie on vocals. Presales for Thunderheads are available now at Aqualamb Records' website with blue and pink vinyl variants, CD and digital options. Each purchase comes with an accompanying 100-page book filled with lush artwork, drawings, lyrics and additional content to get inside the mind of LaMacchia and the creative process. All of your favorite films, songs, shows, and stories are the result of sold editing.  Sometimes the editing of a film is just as important as the script and the direction.  We talk about how it's used to enhance scope in storytelling, how it's used to amplify the scares in horror, and how it is one of the best comedic devices in comedy.   We discuss the works of Kubrick, Fincher, Nolan, Adam McKay, and more.   If you want to hear the UNEDITED version of this chat, you can hear that and so much more over at the Rigs of Dad Patreon.  This also includes extended interviews with my guests like Kurt Ballou (Converge), Greg Edwards (Failure, Autolux), and much more.  Plus you will hear us talk about some movie news of the week and review films like the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Kimi, and more. My guest today is Bryan Cook a Los Angeles based mixer working in the studio world for the past 20 years.  Bryan grew up just outside of Philadelphia, playing the saxophone. A book of Charlie Parker solos became the initial inspiration to pursue music on a deeper level experiencing the studio for the first time in high school and he went on to attend the Berklee College of Music in Boston to study music production and engineering, where his first studio job was interning at Blue Jay studios outside of Boston.  Upon graduation, Bryan headed to Los Angeles, where he landed at the legendary A&M Studios, which has since been renamed Henson Recording Studios.  He worked with artists like Rod Stewart, The Wallflowers, Korn and +Live+, and producers such as Brendan O'Brien, Roy Thomas Baker, Jerry Harrison, Richard Perry, and Trevor Horn.  He then headed out on his own in 2002. He worked for many years recording and mixing for composer/producer Michael Andrews doing music projects including Inara George and Gary Jules, alongside film projects like Walk Hard and 40 year old virgin. He now mixes on his own full time with the rare tracking or production session sprinkled in. He enjoys all kinds of music, except klezmer and polka. Bryan is best known for his work as a mixer for artists like U2, One Republic, the tv show Songland, and Allie Sherlock produced by Ryan Tedder. He has recorded the Raconteurs, Fleet Foxes, Iggy Pop, Queens of the Stoneage, Cold War Kids, Damien Rice, The Eels, and Autolux for Nigel Godrich's well-received “From The Basement” series. Roots to Grooves

"UNKLE" is a British musical outfit founded in 1992 by James Lavelle.James was the founder of iconic UK record label "MoWax". A label known for championing underground hip-hop in the 90's and bringing artists like DJ Shadow to prominence in the UK. The "UNKLE" was project was something James had been trying to work on for over a decade before he decided to ask Shadow for help in producing the material. What resulted was the cult classic "Psyence Fiction" which dropped in 1998.Since those early days, "MoWax" as a functioning label is no longer, and DJ Shadow has moved on to his own illustrious career. But James has stuck it out with "UNKLE", producing multiple albums with new producers and collaborating with artists such as Josh Homme from Queens of The Stoneage and singer/songwriter Mark Lanegan. In this episode Jay and Jesse explore the origins of UNKLE and James Lavelle. To listen to the full episode, including the featured music, visit... signlradio.com"Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg

Carla Azar has worked with everyone from PJ Harvey to Jack White, but her soulfully bionic style crystallized within Autolux, a trio she co-founded in 2001. She tells Joe about her childhood in Alabama, being mentored by T Bone Burnett, the inner workings of Autolux, acting in "Frank", and overcoming tragedy by aiming for the light.

It’s the 2 year anniversary of That Awful Sound! For this special episode we revisit New Found Glory’s lovesick, middle school anthem “Dressed to Kill” and its cringey video featuring a y2k-era nice-guy stalker lusting after an equally psychotic Rachel Leigh Cook.  To commemorate the 2-year anniversary we dive deeper than ever into our horrible fashion choices, including fake piercings made from household items, hot topic socks worn thin, and temporary tattoos purchased FAR too late in life. We also recap our favorite albums of the year, including Angel Du$t’s “Rock The Fuck On Forever,” Helms Alee’s “Stillicide,” Creative Adult’s “Fear of Life,” Dinosaur Jr’s “Give A Glimpse Of What Yer Not,” BADBADNOTGOOD’s “IV,” Nocturnal Habits’ “New Skin For Old Children,” Solange’s “A Seat At The Table,” Field Music’s “Common Time,” Autolux’s “Pussy’s Dead,” and Royal Canoe’s “Something Got Lost Between Here and The Orbit”

This week we have another anthem from the Post Breakup genre with Fallout Boy’s poppy, idiom-ridden crossover hit, “Sugar We’re Going Down.” We cover the fairly funny music video and, with help from dozens of overzealous Genius.com contributors, analyze its indecipherable wordiness. Also: “Double” dad jokes, possible Simpsons references, and a three-way mashup. Music we like: Autolux’s “P*ssy’s Dead” and Field Music’s “Commontime"

This week Michael Muñoz returns to dissect childhood favorite “Slide” by the Gru Gru Dolls and its long-winded promises, half-assed marriage proposal, and very aggressive statements about abortion. We run down the ultra-literal music video, Johnny Goo’s terrible, “tattooable” quotes, and also just his terrible tattoos. Plus: Now That’s What I Call Music Vs. Kidz Bop Vs. Jock Jams, more Simpsons references than you could ever want, and Alien Ant Farm renounces the IE. Good music: O’Brother’s “Endless Light” and Autolux’s “P*ssy’s Dead”
