In Season 3 of the podcast, my good friend Kate Hagen - a talented writer & Senior Vice President at The Black List - joined me to kick off a fascinating new series of conversations with the people behind the movies we love. Autumn in New York may be the movie that broke The Junkies. Hayley, Shauna and Nicole are not here for any of this movie's nonsense: not the cringe factor of the age difference between Winona and her love interest Richard Gere, not the utterly unrealistic sex scenes, not for yet another Manic Pixie Dream Winona, and they are definitely not loving that the movie's main theme is that a woman dying to make a man be better is somehow romantic. Oh, and all that poetry "Winona Dickinson" spouts is super annoying too. Currently based in Atlanta, the Native Memphian was cast in a primary role, playing the character “Ida Belle" in the movie, "Lawless," an American crime drama film directed by John Hillcoat with screenplay by Nick Cave and starring Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy, Guy Pierce, Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowksa, Jason Clarke and Gary Oldman. Byrd recorded background vocals for the TV series pilot, "Still The King", starring Billy Ray Cyrus and in December of 2016, under the historical Obama Administration, performed at the White House Tour. Byrd is the first female vocalist to perform at the legendary Pinewood Atlanta Studios (known for James Bond, Marvel and Pirates of the Caribbean movies) in 2014 for the kickoff gala celebrating the New American location in Fayetteville, Georgia. STANDARD SEMANAL.- “I Didn´t Know What Time It Was” JAZZ RECUERDO ANIVERSARIO.- tal farlow - autumn in new york (1954) Este guitarrista afamado por buena parte de los especialistas, introduce en el universo sonoro de los años cincuenta la elegancia, y da testimonio del valor de buena parte de los boppers, olvidados en la década de los sesenta. Conocido en el mundo del bebop, como "el pulpo", que a nadie le pase desapercibido, su carrera tiene un hito insoslayable que constituyen los cortes de la sesión que se desarrolló el 15 de noviembre del año 54 en Los Ángeles, en la que lo acompañaban con factura exquisita el pianista, Gerald Wiggins, pianista eficaz en esta sesión, Ray Brown, el maestro de las cuatro cuerdas y la rítmica insinuante del sensacional Chico Hamilton. De los cortes, resulta imprescindible la composición del propio Farlow, And She Remenber Me, donde se anticipan en una década las vías por las que la guitarra de Wes Montgomery se desarrollará. La exposición de la melodía a través de "voicings", ampliación armónica de la línea melódica, realzada por el bajo y el tempo, lo constituyen como un corte imprescindible. No olvidemos que Farlow venía de grabar con Horace Silver, Hodward McGhee y Gigy Gryce, una sesión para Blue Note, en la que se sitúan las claves del desarrollo posterior del Hard Bop. Por el contrario de lo que pueda parecer todo el disco está consagrado al Bebop, a la torsión de la armonía y la precisión melódica a través de las improvisaciones; Cherokee es el ejemplo más nítido de que estamos ante un maestro del nuevo estilo que inició Charlie Christian. Sin perjuicio de la composición de Duke Ellington que da título a la sesión, cada una de los temas constituye un testimonio de la dificultad y el trabajo que se requiere para hacer de la improvisación un vuelo coherente y trabado como en pocas ocasiones. Esta sesión publicada por el sello Verve bajo el nombre de Autumn in New York, solamente había sido editada en formato digital en Japón, pudiendo disfrutar de ella, en la actualidad por un módico precio en formato de libro. Editado por Menbran.net y el título de Tal Farlow, Modern Jazz Archive. Talmage Holt Farlow -Tal Farlow (1921-1998)- es, sin lugar a dudas, uno de los más grandes guitarristas de Jazz de todos los tiempos. Para mi decepcionante sorpresa, desconocido por muchos cuando lo nombro en clase (tanto a él como alguno de sus álbumes). Su sonido, su estilo, sus “frases de mano enorme” (como me gusta llamarlas); su sentido del humor, su ingenio e imaginación a la hora de experimentar con la guitarra son marca de la “Casa-Farlow”, uno de los mayores exponentes en la guitarra Bop. Aunque todos sus álbumes son exquisitos, calificaría de ineludibles su primer álbum como líder: Tal Farlow Quartet (Blue Note 1954): uno de los primeros cuartetos con dos guitarristas en la formación (sin pianista). Como veis, no es cosa de hoy en día, ya que uno no sabe qué hacer con tanto guitarrista en las escuelas y sus combos (si se me permite la broma); el fantástico The Swinging Guitar (Verve Records 1957) debe formar también parte de toda estantería de guitarrista y, por supuesto, el que hoy traigo a este artículo Autumn in New York (Verve 1954). Seis standards y dos originales de Farlow (“And She Remembers Me” y “Tal´s Blues”) componen el álbum al que dan vida lógicamente el propio Tal, Gerry Wiggins al piano, Ray Brown al contrabajo y Chico Hamilton en la batería. “I Like To Recognize The Tune” (Richard Rodgers) abre el disco. Desde mi punto de vista toda una declaración de valores. La introducción corre a cargo del batería, la primera “A” la expone Brown, Mr. Farlow entra en la segunda, toma el puente, última “A” ligeramente modificada y guitarra y contrabajo comparten un “Tag”. El único solo es el de Tal Farlow, un ejemplo de fluidez y dirección, un diccionario de Be Bop. ¿Queréis saber dónde y cómo resuelve una frase bop?, esta y la segunda pista, una pieza de Gershwin, “Strike Up The Band” son dos ejemplos a tener en cuenta. En esta segunda, “uptempo”, solo Tal hace solo y… ¡Qué solo!… El tercer tema es al que yo quería llegar: “Autumn In New York”. La pieza de Vermon Duke revive en las manos del genial guitarrista. Él solo la expone, sin sección, de forma magistral. Me encanta el que haya bajado la quinta cuerda una octava, ¡qué original;, las “voicing” adquieren sin duda un color mucho más pianístico; ¡vaya!, el “drop tuning” ya se hacía en los cincuenta… (ironía) Entra la sección y el solo comienza, sublime rítmicamente, tomando como punto de partida la melodía, como solo los muy grandes saben hacer; compositor e improvisador coinciden en el punto de vista, el carácter, en definitiva ¡el mensaje!. Dos coros que destacan por su construcción “pregunta-respuesta” y la complejidad rítmica que adquiere como colofón al final del segundo coro, antes de retomar la melodía, si es que realmente se ha ido alguna vez… Recomendaría sin ninguna duda a todo aspirante a guitarrista de Jazz (o cualquier otro instrumentista), cantar este solo. Solo puede traer beneficios, ¡lo garantizo! “And She Remembers Me” es una composición del propio Mr Farlow. El “head” parece querer llevarnos al “latin mood” pero no es así. Tal se empeña (y lo consigue, ¡vaya si lo consigue…!) en darnos una lección magistral de fraseo, lenguaje y direccionalidad bop. ¡Me gusta la cadenza…! Quedo en deuda, he de traer la transcripción de este tema a la sección. ¡Prometido! Las pistas cinco y seis son dos piezas de Hart y Rodgers. Tal sigue enseñándonos como se toca la guitarra en la balada “Little Girl Blue”, en esta ocasión la clase es sobre el tópico “Chord-Melody”. Cada acorde es oro aquí. “Have you Met Miss Jones” lo hace “uptempo”, frases largas en el solo, perfectamente hiladas y conectadas. Siento un pianista feliz, ¡un solo al fin! Fijaos que a excepción de algún “fill” de Brown (incluso alguna tímida incursión con el arco) nadie había tenido solo hasta ahora, únicamente el líder. Y parece que ha gustado porque Tal le deja introducir su composición blues: “Tal´s Blues”, pista siete. También da solo a Ray Brown; hay que esperar seis piezas para escuchar ese solazo, vale mucho la pena. ¡Qué manera más hermosa de tocar negras en el “comping”! ¡Súper llenas!… Y ha finalizado el banquete y llega el postre: un súper rápido “Cherokee”(Ray Noble), “Aes”, contrabajo y guitarra y B, sección rítmica entera durante el “head”. Tal parece hacer un completo resumen de su magistral clase con su solo: colocación de frases, dirección, blues, cómo contar una buena historia… ¡Solo de batería!, ¡Fantástico Chico Hamilton! No la escuchábamos en solo desde la introducción en el primer tema. El álbum está perfectamente construido, los tempos, las tonalidades. Este disco de Snow Owl tiene otro atractivo como es la inclusión de letras en algunos de sus temas, en los que se ha visto apoyado por voces como las de la norteamericana SuCh, el músico Mamadou Diabaté y el coro Griot de Burkina Faso. Vestida hechos muy discretos, su juego clara y sensible conserva una perfecta legibilidad a pesar de su sofisticación. Juan Sebastián García-Herreros utiliza un vocabulario rico en estos desarrollos melódicos y armónicos. Esta es la relevancia de su homenaje musical a tomar su tiempo sin tratar de competir en exceso. Este disco tiene la sensibilidad al color dominante y dulzura que fluye de una reflexión musical de talento. Técnico logra, evita efectos virtuosos libres y juega sin apartarse de la musicalidad sedentaria. This five movement creation by composer extraordinaire George Russell is his tribute to New York City. It was written and recorded in late 1958 and 1959 and played by an all-star orchestra with many many great Jazz stars as soloists. People such as John Coltrane, Benny Golson, Bob Brookmeyer, Phil Woods, Art Farmer, Bill Evans, Max Roach are all heard extensively. Mr, Russell incorporates several "standard" tunes into his composition here and you'll hear references to "Manhattan", "Autumn In New York", "How About You" and other melodies but it's all George Russell. This historic record is a tribute to one of the greatest cities in the world. Each movement is introduced by poet/writer Jon Hendricks and provides a wonderful set-up to the music. New York, New York....a town so nice, they named it twice!
