A romantic drama about a young woman diagnosed with a terminal illness falls in love with an older bachelor. None of that is really that important. The major thing you need to know is J.K. Simmons is in this movie at some point.

This week on Mummy Dearest, Zach and Sloane unwrap 2000's dying manic pixie dream girl May/December romantic drama: Autumn in New York! This movie hits us with a lot of classic Mummy Dearest tropes: wacky hats, unique jobs, beadwork, surprise galas, waltzes, smelling the air when rain is coming, and dramatic heart surgeries. Would we watch this film again? Absolutely not. Did it give us the cozy fall vibes we needed? Absolutely, yes. Do we go slightly off topic and talk about whether or not Patrick Wilson is into butt stuff? Of course we do. In Season 3 of the podcast, my good friend Kate Hagen - a talented writer & Senior Vice President at The Black List - joined me to kick off a fascinating new series of conversations with the people behind the movies we love. We launched it with what is still one of my all-time favorite episodes: a long, career-spanning discussion with the great filmmaker Allison Anders & then a few months later, we reunited to chat with Allison's daughter, the hard-working & acclaimed music supervisor Tiffany Anders. And recently, Kate returned to help me welcome two extraordinary guests, actors & producers Griffin Dunne & Amy Robison, who, along with their company Double Play Productions, were behind some of the best movies when we were growing up, including director Joan Micklin Silver's CHILLY SCENES OF WINTER, director John Sayles' BABY IT'S YOU, Martin Scorsese's AFTER HOURS (which also starred Dunne), Sidney Lumet's RUNNING ON EMPTY, & more. An actor I think most people in my generation first remember as the teacher upon whom Anna Chlumsky's character had an impossible crush in MY GIRL, Griffin Dunne has had an impressive career on both sides of the camera, acting in films as diverse as AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON & QUIZ SHOW, & directing films such as PRACTICAL MAGIC & the wonderful Joan Didion documentary THE CENTER WILL NOT HOLD. Amy Robinson made a stunning debut as an actress in director Martin Scorsese's MEAN STREETS, in which she played Teresa. And in addition to the films she's produced with Dunne, Robinson has also produced director Joan Chen's AUTUMN IN NEW YORK, the Hughes brothers' FROM HELL, Michael Cuesta's 12 & HOLDING, Nora Ephron's JULIE & JULIA among others. In this feature-length episode, the warm & thoughtful duo behind Double Play Productions take us on a tour of their memories making some of the most acclaimed films from the late '70s through the early '90s & beyond. Timed to release this week as AFTER HOURS debuts on disc from The Criterion Collection (a few months after CHILLY SCENES OF WINTER did as well), film buffs, & especially those interested in the business of making movies are sure to enjoy this endearing conversation. Note: SAG strike rules prevent actors from discussing or promoting any projects they made under past contracts. This conversation was recorded prior to the strike in May of 2023. Autumn in New York may be the movie that broke The Junkies. Hayley, Shauna and Nicole are not here for any of this movie's nonsense: not the cringe factor of the age difference between Winona and her love interest Richard Gere, not the utterly unrealistic sex scenes, not for yet another Manic Pixie Dream Winona, and they are definitely not loving that the movie's main theme is that a woman dying to make a man be better is somehow romantic. Oh, and all that poetry "Winona Dickinson" spouts is super annoying too. The Junkies discuss their romantic age gap limits, party etiquette for couples (don't f*** other people besides your date), and call for more realism in cinematic sex scenes, but for fewer whimsical hats. You can prepare for the last Winona Ryder 101 by watching Destination Wedding.Links: Apple Podcast:

Fitting, since we're talking about the worst movie, 2000's “Autumn in New York.” We discuss men who cook, sweaty hands, gossipy tidbits from behind the scenes of the film, and, inevitably, end up on Richard Gere's wikifeet page (it's where things were always headed).

This week we decided to dip our toe into bad melodrama with 2000's Autumn in New York. It's the classic tale of a patronizing middle-aged man dating a terminally ill 22-year-old young woman who is most definitely too good for him. Someone in 2000 really thought Richard Were and Winona Ryder were a good romantic pairing. Someone in 2000 was wrong.

This five movement creation by composer extraordinaire George Russell is his tribute to New York City. It was written and recorded in late 1958 and 1959 and played by an all-star orchestra with many many great Jazz stars as soloists. People such as John Coltrane, Benny Golson, Bob Brookmeyer, Phil Woods, Art Farmer, Bill Evans, Max Roach are all heard extensively. Mr, Russell incorporates several "standard" tunes into his composition here and you'll hear references to "Manhattan", "Autumn In New York", "How About You" and other melodies but it's all George Russell. This historic record is a tribute to one of the greatest cities in the world. Each movement is introduced by poet/writer Jon Hendricks and provides a wonderful set-up to the music. New York, New York....a town so nice, they named it twice!
