On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are questioning our very existence deep in an Asian jungle. We watched the 2008 film from Ben Stiller, Tropic Thunder. Both of us have worked on enough film sets to be able to definitively say that, while this movie is a fun, action-packed romp, it could also be a completely factual documentary. That's how accurate the performances were.We would never wish having to work with a method actor on any of you, but if you've been around one, then you know what we mean. It's a harrowing experience, much like being fired upon by relentless adversaries.Enjoy this episode about a film that's both hilarious and completely, 100% accurate in every possible way. Yeah, even the Tom Cruise stuff.(Recorded on January 31, 2024)Links to Stuff We Mentioned:Tropic Thunder - The Movie Database (TMDB)Knights of Badassdom (2013) — The Movie Database (TMDB)The Last Airbender (2010) — The Movie Database (TMDB)The Last Airbender: Steven's Not Having It! | More Movies Please! - BuzzsproutMan with the Screaming Brain (2005) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Man with the Screaming Brain: It Takes Two | More Movies Please! - BuzzsproutBirdemic: Shock and Terror (2010) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Birdemic: Shock and Terror | More Movies Please! - BuzzsproutThe Expendables (2010) — The Movie Database (TMDB)The Fast and the Furious (2001) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Psycho (1960) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Deadpool 2 (2018) — The Movie Database (TMDB)I Am Sam (2001) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Rain Man (1988) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Forrest Gump (1994) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Forrest Gump | More Movies Please! - BuzzsproutThe Dark Knight (2008) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Heath Ledger — The Movie Database (TMDB)Scrubs (TV Series 2001–2010) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Natural Born Killers (1994) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Follow Us:Sean's Letterboxd profile!Steven's Letterboxd profile! Our Instagram profile!Support the show
On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are slapping on our swords and sandals and taking down creepy succubus monsters once and for all. We watched the 2013 film from Joe Lynch, Knights of Badassdom.Put aside any negative thoughts or preconceived notions you might have about the enjoyable activity (lifestyle?) of LARPing, i.e., Live Action Role-Playing. Not only is it a blast, but it just might be your chance to save the world. Our recommendation: go into the LARPing day with the expectation that you're going to end up fighting for your life. Those foam swords may not be too effective against a murderous magic demon. That was surely the point of this film. Have fun and be safe out there, but know that there's a fair chance you could end up battling some kind of terrible hellspawn.(Recorded on January 03, 2024)Links to Stuff We Mentioned:Knights of Badassdom - The Movie Database (TMDB)Knights of Badassdom trailer - YouTubeRole Models (2008) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Army of Darkness (1992) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Bruce Campbell — The Movie Database (TMDB)Evil Dead's BRUCE CAMPBELL: Burning Out, Ash vs. Evil Dead, and Frustration on Set | Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum - YouTubeDeep Murder (2019) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Peter Dinklage — The Movie Database (TMDB)Game of Thrones (TV Series 2011–2019) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Summer Glau — The Movie Database (TMDB)Joe Lynch — The Movie Database (TMDB)Dune (1984) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Follow Us:Give us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts!Sean's Letterboxd profile!Steven's Letterboxd profile! Our Buzzsprout site! Our Instagram profile!Support the show

A chief disciple of the yoga guru Swami Sri Yukteswar Giri, he was sent by his lineage to spread the teachings of yoga to the West. He immigrated to America at the age of 27 to prove the unity between Eastern and Western religions and to preach a balance between Western material growth and Indian spirituality. Rizwan examines this classic work with a modern lens and utilizing his background in technology with a focus on the simulation hypothesis. We discuss the impact that Yogananda had on the world and how his ideas are still relevant today. I really really really enjoyed speaking with Rizwan Virk the amazing writer of The Simulation Hypothesis and The Simulated Multiverse Do multiple versions of ourselves exist in parallel universes living out their lives in different timelines? In this follow up to his bestseller, The Simulation Hypothesis, MIT Computer Scientist and Silicon Valley Game Pioneer Rizwan Virk explores these topics from a new lens: that of simulation theory. If we are living in a simulated universe, composed of information that is rendered around us, then many of the complexities and baffling characteristics of our reality start to make more sense. In particular the two most popular interpretations of quantum mechanics, the Copenhagen Interpretation and the Many Worlds interpretation, which are thought to be mutually exclusive, can be unified in an information based framework. Quantum computing lets us simulate complex phenomena in parallel, allowing the simulation to explore many realities at once to find the most "optimum" path forward. Could this explain not only the enigmatic Mandela Effect but provide us with a new understanding of time and space? Bringing his unique trademark style of combining video games, computer science, quantum physics and computing with lots of philosophy and science fiction, Virk gives us a new way to think about not just our universe, but all possible timelines in the multiverse! We're kicking off our annual comedy month with Death Becomes Her - a 1992 American satirical black comedy horror fantasy film directed and produced by Robert Zemeckis. The score for the film was composed by Alan Silvestri, and stars Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn as rivals who fight for the affections of the same man and drink a magic potion that promises eternal youth but causes unpleasant side effects. The film was a pioneer in the use of computer-generated effects and was widely regarded as some of the best work up to that point and beyond. Echten Nerds und Fans von Summer Glau sei der LARP-Slasher Knights of Badassdom empfohlen.

From depressing Oscar contenders to terrible franchise movies, we watched a lot of movies in 2017 that wouldn't necessarily fit the Beyond The Box Set format. So we thought it'd be fun to round off the year with a quick-fire run through everything we saw in the cinema this year, complete with improvised sequel pitches. Join us in the first part of this mammoth undertaking, in which we vainly attempt to remember the plots of some of the movies we saw from January to June 2017. WARNING - spoilers abound for all of the movies we discuss in this episode, but we'll give you plenty of warning to hit the skip button if there's anything you havent gotten around to yet... Here are the movies featured in this episode: 00.00: Intro - Broken Shoulders and Pigeon Invasions 03.00: La La Land 06.20: Jackie 07.55: Loving 09.30: Fences 11.15: Moonlight 13.10: Hacksaw Ridge 15.10: Hidden Figures 17.40: Elle 20.30: Manchester By The Sea 23.10: Lego Batman 26.00: Split 29.40: Lion 30.55: T2: Trainspotting 33.10: Beauty & The Beast 35.55: Get Out 38.45: Logan 43.45: Kong: Skull Island 48.50: Ghost in the Shell 51.30: Free Fire 55.30: The Fate of the Furious 01.02.30: Alien Covenant 01.07.30: Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 01.09.25: Pirates of the Caribbean 5: Salazar's Revenge 01.16.15: Wonder Woman 01.21.10: The Mummy 01.25.40: The Beguiled Stay tuned for part II, featuring increasingly drunken sequel pitches for all the movies we saw from July to December 2017. We'll also be back to our regularly scheduled programming on Friday 5th January 2018, so be sure to subscribe to hear all our latest episodes as soon as they're released. ------- Every week on Beyond The Box Set, we watch a classic standalone movie and compete to pitch the most ridiculous sequel, prequel or spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. Over the course of 2017 we've pitched sequels for stone-cold classics like Gladiator, Titanic and The Truman Show, cult favourites such as The Room, District 9 and Heathers... plus more questionable releases including 50 First Dates, Knights of Badassdom and the Super Mario Bros movie. If you like the show, please hit subscribe on your preferred podcasting platform to hear a new episode every Friday. Beyond The Box Set is available for free download and streaming on iTunes, Stitcher, aCast, Podbean, Pocket Casts, Youtube, Google Play and many other popular podcasting platforms. Leaving us a review is the absolute best way to help our show to find new listeners, so if your new year's resolution is to be nicer to strangers on the internet, please consider throwing some nice words and a star or five in our general direction on any platform that allows for it. If you have a suggestion for a film you'd like to hear us cover - or a sequel idea of your own that you'd like us to shout out on air, you can contact us via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google+ and Tumblr - or by leaving a comment under any blog post on our official website. beyondtheboxset.com twitter.com/beyondtheboxset facebook.com/beyondtheboxset instagram.com/beyondtheboxset
